GoPro Awards: Tree Well Rescue at Mt. Baker
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 кві 2023
- Tree wells are a danger wherever there is fresh snow. Francis Zuber was skiing in Washington when he caught glance of a partially buried snowboard. Ian Steger, a rider from a different group, was buried upside-down and unable to free himself. Francis, trained in avalanche-rescue protocol, sprung into action to clear Ian's airway.
The mountains don't care how much experience you have or how careful you are. Accidents can and will happen-riding with company that is prepared and educated is the best way to stay safe in dangerous terrain. Thank you, GoPro Awards recipient Francis, for showing us what it means to "Be a HERO" 🙏

Buddy had his unluckiest day and luckiest day all at once
Yea
He needs a world record thing for being the worlds luckiest man on a mountain
Thats what everyone says about situations like this
@@XxRoyalxHeadshotxX bc it's true
🤣🤣
Yeah this guy deserves the award he's a hero
@@acs6007 er hat ihn trotzdem gerettet also ist er ein hero
I doubt he'll get one but if he came out as transgender he probably get one.
a gopro hero
People with different political views can be good people too. Just because someone has a different view than you doesn't mean they are an awful person
The thing is when you do this kinda thing you just think in your mind “I just did what a normal person would” 15 years later watching this I understand now why I have the heroism award.
For those wondering, after the rescue, both skied down the mountain uninjured.
Do you know if there's a longer video or another video that captures what happened after this?
@@rswink No, Francis pressed the red button to stop recording on his gopro at some point in the footage to focus on saving the victim. Both we're in God's hands.
@@Halo321x I see. Thanks for the info!
@@rswink No problem. God bless
Wow, I wonder how long he was under all that snow. It's a miracle that he hadn't run out of oxygen yet!
No question about it, saved his life. Man deserves all the praise coming his way. God even if he could still breathe, the claustrophobia of being in the dark, upside down, unable to move and all alone would be enough to drive anyone into complete panic; the fact that he seemed relatively calm once he was saved is amazing.
He was most likely in shock by the look of it. Plus, the lack of oxygen can really drain your energy output.
The guy was saved once he got access to fresh air... he probably would have been a goner within a few minutes more had he not been noticed.
Dude probably already accepted death by the time he was found
@@tordiversen8611 also extreme hypothermia, it's a miracle he's not passed out yet.
You saw how deep that snow was, there is no way he could breathe
This is absolutely INSANE!!
I know! If it wasn’t for him he would probably not have survived it’s a miracle that he found him
hi
@@killuazoldyck99405 brother?
@@IWasCaughtIn4KBoostingayo u found ur long lost brother
@@User10047 YES and btw i like ur vids keep it up
Imagine if he wasn't there. What a hero
Or even just taken a slightly different path!
If he wasn't there, he'd just carry on skiing
@@Moose0fNorway not the dude under the snow, the guy who saved him
@@Moose0fNorway 😂😂😂😂
Unfortunately happens all the time, skiers and snowboarders get caught in avalanches sometimes and are only found in the spring thaw. No need to imagine, it's a very real danger.
This is how my younger brother died. Truly, a second chance at life! Thank you Francis.
So sorry for your loss.
@@dreeph Truly sorry for your loss. That is so sad!
Sorry to hear that 😢😔
I'm so sorry for you loss ❤️😢
Sorry to hear
This guy is gonna inspire me to bring a shovel when snowboarding ❤
When it's deep and snowing at Baker, you are required on some days to wear a beacon, have probes and a shovel.
@@pekanpi434 if youre in the backcountry (where this guy was) you can get fined for not having a beacon, shovel, probe, and a buddy with all the avi gear too. This guy was prepared and saved the other guys life which is all that matters.
Always a good idea to have safety equipment with you when you're skiing in the back country like this. I won't do it, I've heard of too many people hitting trees and ending up paralyzed, but yeah, better safe than sorry!
@chanelking420 this was Baker side country. Off of chair 8. Always be prepared, especially this season.
@@chanelking4203 thanks for explaining that as I knew beacons existed and can't understand why anyone would risk this stuff on a solo.
That’s such an obscure spot for that guy to have fallen.
He would’ve never been found in time if it weren’t for Francis.
What a hero.
Fr
It was a tree well. In another video he said the snow shifted behind him and he fell into it backwards.
Yeah, thats the thing about tree well
it's a tree well
I believe I heard when you get trapped in deep snow like that you only have about 15 minutes of oxygen. The dude came by at the exact right time to save his life. Insane
nice
That's crazy. It takes about four minutes to suffer brain damage when deprived of oxygen
@@sneaky_EarLight snow like this is aerated so there's oxygen in it. But with heavy snow you'll last less time.
@@jellybeansi You're right. Either way... terrifying.
@@sneaky_Ear Totally. This guy probably had zero expectation that anyone was coming to save him, and "knew" full well that he was going to die. That would be so incredibly traumatic.
LETS ALSO GIVE IT UP TO THOSE WHO HAVE ASSISTED OTHERS IN SIMILAR PREDICAMENTS WITH NO FOOTAGE BUT ARE ANGELS TO THOSE THEY SAVED AS WELL 🙏🏽
Yeah, yes, what this guy said. Like me, I've saved so many people. In so many situations too. You know like burning buildings, sky-diving, underwater, hostage situations, just various bravery-required scenarios. I just happen to not have any footage or evidence. But still, I think I'm due for some praise. So, comment below for the congrats to my courage and huge balls.
@@erikgriswold5273 thank you for everything you’ve done brother ✊✊
@@erikgriswold5273 thank you sir!
I can't tell if you guys are in on the shitty joke or if you actually believe that I'm basically Spider-Man
@@erikgriswold5273💀💀💀💀
Bet that guy was saying his goodbyes in his head. There was nobody else out there and he's so lucky that guy chose that path and noticed his barely visible board. He was buried good and not getting out by himself. Thank you good man.
Yah in a interview he said he was thinking he wished he could tell his fiance how much he loved her.
We're both gonna catch a breath for while: words of an angel 😇
I think one of the most important thing that we can learn from this video is to stay absolutely calm in these kind of situations
then again i'm amazed the guy didn't sink deeper because of his ginormous balls
What XD
These kids need a think to joke about , Thats why internet is not for kids Fuc* you 9 yo , Joking on a death like situation such an as*hole you are

The most beautiful "thank u" ever heard in my life, as a snowboarder almost make me cry.
True hero here.
People like him are real heroes: he deserves all our respect 🤝👍
All people are heroes it is just he was the one who found him
Beautiful gesture, beautiful video, stop..... Have a nice weekend @@totheunknownigo9550 😊
The other guy said "take your time man". How can he be so chill. They're both real heroes
Dude who landed in the tree well is a friend of mine. He never wanted to become famous this way, but wow thank goodness for the skier. Be careful out there
That Skier literally saved a life. He deserves an award.
He got one😂
First time I am seeing a rescue video of a person buried in snow. Hope the gentleman is doing fine now.
he thankfully is! ^^ there's a few videos that show them reuniting via video call that show both parties are doing good.
@@BloodyRoseMooney Thanks for the update. Great to know that.
@@ShinilPayamal no problem!
Skiers gotta look out for each other, guy did good.
@@squirrelsinjacket1804 definitely agree with that
And he stopped the cam for the intimate heart-felt stuff. Good guy through and through.
He probably forgot it was on until then. Shit even I forgot it was on, and I was watching the video
Adrenaline just kicks in and you forget about everything but the task at hand. He finally remembered when he had the chance to catch his breath after digging enough for the other dude to breathe
This is the most impressive thing in the recording, that he stopped it. Can’t imagine who in todays world won’t continue to record this incident. Such a pure and good guy.
That's bro moment! We all are earthlings and we should help each other. Glad that dude is alive
We certainly are.
"take your time man"
thats the voice of someone who is just glad to be able to live, homie got lucky
This made me almost cry just the desperation and acceptance in his voice was what broke me

Francis was THISCLOSE to finding a dead man. You can hear it in his voice. Thank you Francis for being a quick thinking caring individual.

I can't imagine how scared that guy was waiting for someone to find and rescue him... who knows how long he'd been buried for
He can't have been there long.
probably under a minute
Til Spring
It was about 5-10 minutes and he was basically thinking he's done in this world.
at the begging there was someone in front of him so I think they were a group. He was maybe 2 minutes down there
Amazing rescue, and an example to everyone that having situational awareness can not only save your life, but put you in a position to save another’s.
He wasn’t even out for the clout, he shut the GoPro off.
Respect 🫡
Would anyone be??
@@bentownsend4017yes. Not many are as selfless.
The crazy part about this video is if the skier showed up a minute later, the outcome probably would've been completely different. The snowboarder got very lucky and the skier is straight up a hero
Because of people like Francis is why i still have faith in this world. Such a wholesome “take your time”. I can only imagine what he was thinking under what seems to be about 6-7ft of snow. Thank you Francis
Absolutely incredible piece of footage. Those first 3 minutes are legitimately more intense than just about any blockbuster. Terrifying stuff!
Guardian angel, if he would have chosen any other line that boarder was headed to the big man upstairs. SALUTE YOU SIR FOR WHAT YOU DID! Saved that guys life no doubt.
The most honest and loaded ‘thank you’ I’ve ever heard.
This is miracle! The rescuer is... no words.
This guy deserves a bunch of awards.
He got one 👍
Nobody gonna mention that super chill "take your time, man"!? After thanking him, he remained calm even though he almost died. Amazing interaction between two bros
The amount of strength you need to crawl through deep soft snow like that is insane.

this is kind of guy you want to hang out with
I like it when he says thank you, and then the guys like no problem, just shows the true kindness.
Tree wells will forever haunt me after this! What incredible luck and amazing composure. 🍀 a true life saver
Its crazy that I watched this last Sunday and now its been blowing up like crazy. I even watched the interview with these guys after the tree well rescue happened and am so glab that this is blowing up because it sends a good message to people out there how prepared you might be something can always go wrong and in this case there was someone there to save his life and hopefully people can learn from this video on how to take on the mountain next time they go out weather that's mapping your root, doing a compression test, bringing a shovel and other tools with you, and much more... I'm just glad everyone's safe 👊🏼♥
Same! i watched it like a week ago or so on instagram, as well as checked their ig accounts and was really surprised that it didnt go viral, given that if it wasnt for the sheer luck, the snowboarder's life would have taken a unpredictable turn. Glad he was found
Where can I find the rest of the footage?
@@carl8568 This is the video I watched ua-cam.com/video/wQ8Kgb_XUkk/v-deo.html
Bro was literally "chillin" in the snow upside down ~
props to both of them staying so calm and collected
Absolute blessing from God. Thank you to this man for being aware and ready for the scenario!
This is how life long friendships are made
I'm crying... he must've been so scared. Thank God...
Literally your slogan, GoPro. “Be a HERO”. This guy has to win.
Absolutely heroic, this is what a high trust society would look like
On behalf of skiers and borders everywhere, thank you Francis Zuber! You humanity saved Ian Steger. I'm even awe of the fight you had to put in just to get back up the mountain in that snow! Never seen snow like it myself, but I've learned from your video what to do if ever in the same situation, thank you.
Imagine if he didn’t take the unusual path he did, squeezing in between those trees like that… probably a path I wouldn’t have taken. The snowboarder was lucky and the skier is a hero. Happy for both of them.
0:17 this is actually reason probably why he can find him. He fall down , get up and slowly pass this place and find this guy. This remind me ''There is no accident''🙂
"take you time man" after almost dying is so funny for no good reason
I shed a tear watching this. I know everyone would do this, but it's still a beautiful moment. How someone puts so much effort to saves someones life. Love to both people, I hope they're doing well
Thank you God! 🙏🏻
We dont understand your plan but you have one for us all. I'm grateful that you sent an angel, Francis. This is incredible. Love and prayers to you all! 🙏🏻❤️🕊️
Not all may believe in Him but He believes in you. ❤️
You could tell by his calm voice that he just accepted his fate and didn’t expect anyone to come for him! Glad he’s ok!
Still gets my adrenalin pumping watching this.
You never know how you'll react in a moment like this. Francis smashed it. Collected under pressure. Ian was pretty cool and calm too. Excellent work.
This legend not only saved the poor guy's life, but most likely indirectly saved many others by showing what can happen in the corner of your eye. Pay attention to your surroundings, lads. It might just end up saving someone's life.
two entirely separate lives on a course to intersect at this exact moment, that dude is a guardian angel
Wow. Thanks a lot for sharing this! I'm from Switzerland and I didn't know about this phenomena. It says 1000 more than the pictograms you can find about tree wells.
Never ride alone and without the right equipment.
Calm action in a panic situation by both. Well done!
I live 1 hour 30 minutes away from Mt. Baker, and I have never seen such a great person in the world. Thanks you very much for doing that❤❤❤
Thank you zuber, this was intense, the world owes you
When he says take your time man 🥺
Real hero's don't wear capes
Award? Hell yes! He restored my faith in humanity.
This man deserves an award. Bless his heart and courage.
This is the GoPro awards
I have only respect. This guy is a real hero.
He literally saved his life and had a 1 in a million chance of finding this guy in time. Insane.
I firmly believe if he hadn't tipped to the right, he would've missed Ian by a tree. By tipping right where he did, Francis had to go between those two trees, right where Ian was. Hero for sure and fully deserving of this award!
He deserves anything , this man is great and glad he peeped the board on his way down bc man he saved a life
Hé dit everything so well they both did, they immediately trusten eachother and dared to be afraid and catcher their brengt. This made me cry, thank you so much
"GoPro, be a hero", I think this is the video that represents it the best !!
Wow. Held my breath the entire time until dude was safely out of the snow. What a hero, and he acted so fast.
Real life superhero. Brings tears to my eyes
The most sincere thank you I’ve ever heard
I wanted to keep watching the whole video
Amazing visual experience ❣️
I can’t imagine the relief of suddenly feeling someone’s hand on your leg and then the pressure slowly releasing as the snow is taken away, then to feel their hand on your arms as they dig you out. I would probably panic with the snow falling on my head everytime he makes headway… but then being able to breathe again? Knowing you’ll be ok? I might be in shock but I’d probably just start crying ngl
There’s no payment or award that is worth the same amount as saving a life!! 😭😭😭😭
As a snowboarder i feel this bc i get bullied by my friends but then there is always someone who is so nice when i fall down love this ❤😢
This is exactly why they bully you because they're sick of saving your snowboarding clumsy ass.
Wow. Yeah total hero! Guy is really lucky
This guy deserves everything good that life has to offer !
what a hero, guy was done, completely trapped and suffocating, man how scary is that!! Blessings to the rescuer,,what an amazing save!!!
I see people talk about luck and equipment but let's not forget the fitness required either. If he goes down hill a few more meters it would take significantly longer to get to him and he would have been way more exhausted. Now add a long day of snowboarding to the mix and it could be too late. Glad the rescuer was fit enough, prepared and lucky all at once.
Bro the adrenaline that’s running through the guy trying to save him. You can tell he was kinda panicking at the moment-
Oh man I got chills. I can't imagine what that must have been like. Man is a hero
😢 Francis, You were not there by accident. The Angel in you was on duty. You are blessed ❤❤❤❤
Wszystko dobrze się skończyło. Nie ma to jak kumpel👍💪

Was he the first rider who went ahead of Francis? Or is this just a random person who was found. Francis you are a hero dude you deserve the award and much more. A mother gets to see her child again. A father his son. A family gets a piece of their family back. Respect.

He totaly saved his life he is a true hero
He is absolutely a hero. real hero.
I'm genuinely wondering how he survived, his face was covered with snow he couldn't breathe
Edit: ok the guy that saved him did an interview and apparently there was a small air pocket under there, but he tried to move and it collapsed so maybe cause the snow was really thin? idk
