Warrumpi Band did this originally and it has huge significance for indigenous Australians but it has become anthemic for all us as well. Such a great, great song. As someone said below it is a love song to this incredible land, this big old island. Joyful indeed!
I love Jessica M, The first time I heard this was by Christina Anu in 2000 and that's the version I heard first even though it was originally sung by an Aboriginal man in 1988 or something. I could be wrong but I wish I had heard the original first. ❤️ Beautiful song and I'm an Aussie 🇦🇺❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The original singer is Christine Anu. I’m pretty sure this song touches most Aussies hearts in the same way as “I still call Australia Home”. Literally just brought me to tears now. Australia is our Island home
Love your quote "You could close your eyes and hear her smile" She has a beautiful heart. Jess is 'real' no airs or graces....she is down to earth and a humble, kind woman. Love this song too. Love seeing your smile as well. Jessica comes from the top end of Australia and is an indigenous woman. Compared to America Australia is a relevantly new country...founded in 1770. But the Indigenous people have been here for thousands of years.
I have never heard Jess's version before. Have always loved her voice - she's a true national treasure. This is beautiful. I can imagine it's very personal to her, living away from family and country for long periods of time. Love you Jess.

She's Still one of my favourite singers of all time. And if you want something really different, google Christine anu "last train".... enjoy!
This song was written by Neil Murray (the only white bloke in the band) from the Warumpi Band . It is the story of the Lead Singer.(the aboriginal Mick Jagger). I didn't mention his real name out of respect to his culture. You should watch ,for your own enjoyment , the Warumpi Band perform this it's incredible. It's his story.

It is about wandering the about as a ''swaggy'', which is something like a hobo in the U.S.A. An old song that fills our nation with pride. I have heard Americans say the same thing about the song America the beautiful as being your ''unofficial'' national anthem.Great reaction, thankyou, and well done. Lots of people will have different views on this song but this is mine.
The song is not about the island of Australia, it's about the lead singer of The Warumpi Band's home up at Elcho Island off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
Too many experts in this thread calling it a Christine Anu song. It is not. It is a song by the Warumpi Band, and if you've never heard the original, go and do so now. Then feel the same amount of shame I did the first time I realised I'd never heard the real version. It is heartbreakingly, hauntingly beautiful
I'm ashamed to admit I'd never heard the original. It breaks my heart. It has a totally different attitude and feeling. It is not a song of joy it is a song of longing and displacement.

Yes, the original by Warumpi Band 1988 is the best due to its authenticity...and people who think the Island Home is Australia(instead of Elcho Isle off Arnhem Land) don't have a clue.
Largest island in the world - Straya Smallest continent in the world -Straya We all live close to the sea, 80% Aussie's live on the coastal regions coz our outback is to inhospitable to live in. Jessica might have done a good job on this version but I never got into it because Christine Anu version was just so good. Even when Christine re-worked the song for the Sydney 2000 games I still preferred her original version. Her voice is beautiful but you can also see the beach, feel the sand. There's so much emotion in the original
Jessica is from Darwin, the capital of a federal territory, sort of a 'state' called the Northern Territory. It is way up north in the tropics, on the coast about halfway between east and west at the top of Australia. Jessica's mother is Indigenous Australian and her father is Indonesian Australian. Watching your reactions I'm reminded of just how many songs that Australian's consider to be our National 'Anthems'. This is another. The original is by the Warumpi Zband, and Indigenous band , back in the 1980's. The most well known cover is probably Christine Anu's version, which was a big mainstream hit. Christine Anu is a Torres Strait Islander, our other Indigenous peoples. The Torres Strait is the body of water at the top of Australia, between us and New Guinea.
Jess is from Darwin in the Northern Territory, but the Island she's referring to is Elcho Island, also in the Norther Territory. It's actually a cover, this is the original version by the Warrumpi Band. Christina Anu, another indigenous singer, had a hit with this song with slightly different verses. The song takes on a new meaning when you realise that, for indigenous people, their land has a spiritual dimension as well.

Thanks for the reacting to my request Nick, for context this song was written by Neil Murray for his friend and singer of Warumpi Band after visiting Galiwinku Elcho Island (Dr G’s home as well) Galiwinku is a beautiful part of Australia. This song makes me think of NT and makes me little bit homesick. Do yourself a favour watch Warumpi Band then have a look at no fixed address and coloured stone 👍🏽 foundational indigenous bands. Even Dami Im has recently covered this. Important song to the mob but now an important song to Australians in general.
Fun fact - Christine Anu's version of My Island Home came in 2nd place for the 1995 ARIA Song of the Year. 1st place was Tina Arena - Chains. ua-cam.com/video/0Z9_Bp0nrXA/v-deo.html
This version by Jess is fantastic IMO. Christine Anu's version is lovely too . Australia is is an island continent. I live in the island state of Tasmania. Jess has the most beautiful reaction every time she turns for someone on The Voice. Jess was first heard by Marcia Hines on Australian Idol.
all Australians are island dwellers, big or small so we love this song Christine Anu does this song a little differently but is the best female version of it. I am from far north Queensland so I guess I favor her islands peoples . I remember standing in a 16 foot tinny with 2 islanders singing this along with Christine on the radio, me looking at the Australian mainland, and them at mount Adolph's island in the strait's. will never forget that happy day. ua-cam.com/video/0Z9_Bp0nrXA/v-deo.html
The borders are just made up...I live 800km north of Darwin on Flores Island...which is part of Indonesia now. But the culture is Island culture and Australian Indigenous artists visit here. There was lots of contact between these Islands and the Indigenous people of Northern Australia long before the Europeans arrived from the West. Even as far North as Makassar on Sulewesi Island there is a history of trading sea cucumber with the people of Arnhem. Eastern Indonesia and Northern Australia are very related and full of Island Life culture dance and music.
Nick could you please please do a reaction to Guy Sebastian's performance he did at the weekend for the floods appeal. Its on his Facebook page & Instagram he sang Standing With You it was absolutely beautiful and a very heartfelt performance, you would absolutely love this one it's different to how he sang it on the voice.
We Australians (USA would use the wording "White" - that Australian's don't use the 'colour' wording but use more our imigrant nationality) ...WE love & respect & recognise our Countries 1st native (Aboriginal) indigenous culture more over our own imigration culture.....That's the Difference between Australia & USA!!!!....Just saying... 🦘💕
@@Areyousayingidontknowmyname all the cases of police brutality, suicide in custody and no copper has ever been found guilty of killing an indigenous person ever!!!!! No matter what proof os found. They dont even tell the family if the person is dead until days later esp.in prison.. So stating Australia is better then America cos we don't have rascism on any level is an out of touch statement. At least America has sentenced and imprisoned police and custody officers who've been either negligent or been involved in a murder where they have abused their power/corrupt esp in jails. There's a whole movement speaking out on this. So sorry but indigenous Australians still struggle with rascism esp from those in a position of power. And in their daily life.
@@beckahcauchi4047 If you read my comment i said its not all coming from. I am not sure what comment you read but it was not mine. I did not say anything about Australia being better than America. I am not going to argue valid points you made. But it does not mean that First nation people are not also racist. Often to each other. The amount of times ive heard either my neighbours or others of the same culture calling each other BLACK C@NTS. Excuse my language but its a couple of choice words that regularly pop out their mouths all down the street. The country as a whole is trying to work stuff out. But its pointless if some of the corrosion is coming from inside their own homes. Personally i hope that a wake up call happens.

my nephew played the main role as Jessica's 'boyfriend' lol. the church in the beginning scene was built at the hands of my grandparents in the Kimberleys with the monks. and in the movie they all were heading back to my island home - Broome in the Kimberleys lol.... yes there were great artists in that movie
Oscar winner in Bran Nue Dae I found amusing.
@@lisadelahaye6568 That’s really interesting, and what a great family connection to the movie, church and location! I can never flick past that movie, no matter what time of day it is, lol!
@@coreenavenn4235 And he probably enjoyed that shoot and character than many others he has done!
It's very short, but I think Dan Sultan doing Nyul Nyul Girl at the end of Spicks and Specks (with David Bridie on keys) is one of the great Australian live performances
Jessica is from the Northern Territory
Jessica is from the north of Australia, the Northern territory that is home to a large indigenous Aborigines population our first people, they are the American Indians of Australia so to speak this is said with no insult or comparing I love the indigenous people of Australia they founded this land 😊
Keep up the great content, enjoying your reactions over here in Melbourne Australia.
Watch the original Warumpi band version. You’ll love it 👍
Fun fact - Christine Anu's version of My Island Home came in 2nd place for the 1995 ARIA Song of the Year.
1st place was Tina Arena - Chains.

This version by Jess is fantastic IMO. Christine Anu's version is lovely too .
Australia is is an island continent. I live in the island state of Tasmania.
Jess has the most beautiful reaction every time she turns for someone on The Voice.
Jess was first heard by Marcia Hines on Australian Idol.
all Australians are island dwellers, big or small so we love this song
Christine Anu does this song a little differently but is the best female version of it.
Hey Nic 👋 what that song you singing there in your intro to this song 🎵 ? LOL....🤣
I thought she might have been from the Torres straight islands - though I could be wrong.
Nah, born in Darwin
The borders are just made up...I live 800km north of Darwin on Flores Island...which is part of Indonesia now. But the culture is Island culture and Australian Indigenous artists visit here. There was lots of contact between these Islands and the Indigenous people of Northern Australia long before the Europeans arrived from the West. Even as far North as Makassar on Sulewesi Island there is a history of trading sea cucumber with the people of Arnhem. Eastern Indonesia and Northern Australia are very related and full of Island Life culture dance and music.
This is a wonderful version of My Island Home but Check out Christine Anu’s earlier version. As good 👍🏼 .
Agree, Nick would love it!
Great version from Jessica, this is Christina Anu’s song

🙂💕
We Australians (USA would use the wording "White" - that Australian's don't use the 'colour' wording but use more our imigrant nationality) ...WE love & respect & recognise our Countries 1st native (Aboriginal) indigenous culture more over our own imigration culture.....That's the Difference between Australia & USA!!!!....Just saying... 🦘💕
The actions of the vast majority of white Australian's on a daily basis strongly suggests otherwise. We should, but most don't.
Sorry but plenty of people in Australia are racist. Unfortunately it still exists.
@@beckahcauchi4047 I can tell you it is not all coming from the none first nations either.
Absolutely outstanding this song has a deep meaning for me whatever artist performs it , Jessica has such a beautiful and happy soul and i have listened to her music since her first performance on Australian tv . I'm glad we have talented indigenous artist's that are recognised around the world
# All Lives Matter ! ✌️👍
Darwin
The original by Warumpi Band is way better
Love this song by Christine Anu and Jess’s cover was so beautiful!
Jess is from the Northern Territory of Australia where a lot of our First Nations people live and this performance was to promote literacy in our First Nations people.
I asked a friend who is First Nation and he said even though he’s not from the region where the songwriter is from it represents to him the feelings of coming home to his people and country.
Glad you liked it mate 🖤💛❤️
It's not a Christine Anu song, it's a Warumpi Band song, and if you don't know that version you are missing out.
It's not by Christine Anu
No one does this song like warrumpi band can't listen to anyone else sing it....read what they done to the original singer regarding this song very sad and disrespectful
How about asking the question of her being a supporter of the great reset and backed by world economic forum?
Love this song. I think Christine Anu was the original singer.
Love my island home Australia 🦘.
no it's a Neil Murray song
No offense Jessica - but you "butchered" the song - however I am sure the Warumpi band and Neil will forgive you ............ I think it will take me a little longer.
Move along peacock.
Seriously no offence, but she is awesome and nailed this song, on point.
