  • Mad About Surrealism presents the passion and the personal interests of four European collectors of Surrealist art, and creates an impression of the ‘madness’, the irrational and ‘the marvellous’ that the Surrealists sought in their work. The surrealists were passionate and their collectors were no less so. This video introduces collector Roland Penrose (1900-1984).
    COLLECTOR ROLAND PENROSE
Roland Penrose (1900-1984), himself an artist, became friends with the French surrealists thanks to his first wife. He supported them by purchasing their work, something for which there was hardly any interest at the time. Penrose developed into an exhibition maker and prepared the way for surrealism in the United Kingdom. His contacts with Picasso, Miro and Dali posed a massive change in his life.
    THE EXHIBITION
From 11 February to 28 May 2017, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents Mad About Surrealism, an unprecedented survey of the Surrealist movement with masterpieces from four famous European collections.
The exhibition features more than three hunderd key works, rare books and records from the archives of Dalí, Ernst, Magritte, Miró and other well-known Surrealists. They come from the former private collections of Roland Penrose, Edward James and Gabrielle Keiller, augmented with works from the collection of Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch, which is still being developed. Get to know these collectors in this series of four videos.
