    Love when everything blooms again around my area. Free dandelion and clover flowers all over the place in the yard! I know budgies and cockatiels love eating the pedals. Wonder if the ones you listed would grow around here or not, might be worth growing some just in the summer, in a big batch, and freezing for the off season.

    Hey man, I just got a pair of cockatiels last Friday and I wanted to thank you SO MUCH for putting out such great information! You're really helping both me and the birds live a better, healthier life! I do have a question though! I recently got two cockatiels and I'd love to let them fly around because I think they're beginning to get quite bored in their cage. However, they're not hand tame yet and I'm reluctant to let them out of the cage unless they at least can step up. They'll both eat out of my hand, and the male will occasionally put a foot up, but the female is still quite distrusting. I don't want to have to chase them around the room and damage what trust I've gained just to get them back in their cage at night. Send help! 😅

      Hey Taylor,
      Thank you for the kind comment!
      So, I'd suggest target training as a solution! Many trainers recommend it for nervous or non hand tame birds. Once it's trained, it will make it much smoother getting them back into the cage without having hands as involved!
      Having them step up trained is ideal, but with targeting it'll give you another useful tool to use! (It's also good for mental stimulation, communication, dangerous situations and trick training!)

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Poppy,
      I'd say get as big a cage as you can for them. They may be small birds but they still need lots of space to move around in. It's a bit of a myth that small parrots need small cages!
      Also lots of toys and fun things for them to chew and play with!

    So I have a perhaps odd question. How does one make tea when one does not drink tea themselves? Everywhere I've looked the biggest recommendation is to just make yourself a cup, set some aside, dilute it, and then serve it to your bird.
    I don't like Chamomile tea so I can't really make myself a cup and then give some of it to my bird. I also don't want to waste it by throwing out most of the cup. I thought maybe I could make a cup of it and put it in my fridge and throw it out at the end of the week, but from what I have found online tea doesn't last long in the fridge once brewed.
    Any advice on the ratios I could use to make a very small batch of tea for my birds?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +2

      Hey Jessi,
      I'm not the biggest tea fan either, most of the stuff we give the birds is just for the birds. Anything from a tea bag isn't ideal so I wouldn't usually recommend people sharing their teas with birds anyway!
      Chamomile is actually a good one to use/make. You can make a cup, let it cool, provide the tea to your bird and then either chuck out the bits or strain and serve that day over their chop.
      You can also serve chamomile ( and many other flowers) dry either over chop or as part of a dry mix and are edible for your parrots.
      I would not keep a brewed tea for longer than a day or two, purely because it isn't ideal if kept for ages.
      Ratio wise, we don't tend to be that specific with it. For a small cup we usually use a couple of tea spoons worth!

      @@TheParrotTeacher Thank you so much for responding!!! I appreciate the insight. I do have an additional question.
      At the same time I posted my comment, I had earlier in the day made a post on the parrot subreddit and someone had what I thought was a pretty neat idea of making the tea and then making chamomile tea ice cubes with it. Then I could melt one for night time tea for my bird or maybe they would even like to crunch on it as a toy.
      Would love to hear your thoughts on that approach.
      Though admittedly at this point I think I'm settling on just giving the flowers rather than making a tea.

      @@TheParrotTeacher I live in the Netherlands. In the area I live is no bird flu, but thanks for the warning. I will pay extra attention! I have a little herbal garden, especially for our cockatiel, Joey. I planted some mint, some koriander, some oregano, some thyme and some rosemary. Every day I chop up a little bit, to add to his vegetables. And I thought it would be nice to add some edible flowers to his garden. Ones that he can eat, without drying it first, of make tea out of it. Just fresh. Hence the question.
      I have switched to a diet of vegetables and herbs and spices, thanks to your video's. To my surprise he didn't have any problems with this. But how do I know if he is not getting too thin? I just want to be sure. It is only been for a week that his diet changed. He only had seeds befor.

      Regarding weight, just regularly weighing Joey and monitoring his weight will be enough. You’ll see if it varies too much and can adjust diet.

      Weighed again today (Wednesday): 123 gr. Is that something to worry about or is it an accidental drop?
      Every afternoon I give him seeds in a tray with all kinds of scraps of paper and cardboard so that he has to search for them. I put about 10 gr. in. Is that enough?
      In the morning he gets a bowl of vegetables (with herbs and spices) and I put a little bit of seeds in it so that he is motivated to eat them. Now that the news has worn off, he doesn't find the vegetables that interesting anymore, and I wonder if he's eating enough of them. I will continue to monitor his weight.

      Hey Sietske,
      So that weight sounds quite high to me. The average weight range for a cockatiel is usually between 90-110g
      Another way you can check, if he will allow it is by feeling is keel bone. This is usually done by touching his chest, or easily with lips or nose. If it is sticking out he is likely a little under, if it's bulging and soft then fat, if you can just feel it it's normal.
      generally a drop of a few grams isn't an issue, and weight will vary. It's also important to weigh at the exact same time of day too as that can influence things.
      Regarding diet and veg, we have videos on that topic!
