I love that you took your time going through them, and reviewed the spectrum for most of the tracks. Its always felt like a really warm song, its amazing seeing how all that stuff compliments each other in the lower mids, and then the percussion, arps and his vocal give that bit of intimate sheen. Classic.
The only thing I can 100%ly confirm about the song's instrumentation, (beside Linn LM1) unless you already heard it, is that YAMAHA GS1 was at least responsible for the Rhodes sounds. Steve Porcaro himself revealed that. He had three of those very first commercially available 1981 FM preset synths in the housing of baby grand pianos at a new price of $16,000. Now you could buy a house with those. According to him, all three GS1 fell victim to battery leakage, which could've easily been prevented, since GS series is the only whose storage- battery- sockets are accessible from the outside(!!!) They use exactly the same two AA mignon cells like radio alarm clocks. Since I don't own a GS1 but its "smaller" brother GS2, which is still incredibly huge, I could imagine that also the brass solo on "Human Nature" is GS1. It somehow reminds me of my GS2. Because many understandingly don't identify DX7 as pad machine, FM had to suffer bias to only provide decent wiry and metallic patches; opposed to GS & CE series. On those its the pads & brasses that show any analogue pad & string machine the truth. Certainly Rhodes & Tubular Bells were already introduced in 1981 with those brute sounding FM- Dinos but the very best indeed are their pads, even with Ensemble buttion OFF.
The drums were done on a Linn LM-1, probably programmed by Jeff Porcaro, with overdubbed live percussion. LM-1 was also used on "Thriller", "Baby Be Mine" and "Wanna Be Starting Something". It seems for this track that they overdubbed a live part with the Linn part on this track.
Finally, someone who actually understands these tracks in-depth. Fantastic breakdown! Edit: 37:00 that track is in fact fake/fan made and distributed with the session you have.
Thanks so much for the lovely compliment!! Oh whaaaat!?? That is awesome they’ve made it sound amazing! What else can you tell me or point me into the direction of some more info on that recreation
@@luffegun Thank YOU for the great content! Weirdly enough, I’d recreated the original demo instrumental on my channel - then when the Human Nature session leaked (or at least one of the leaks) the recreation in the session you have started appearing all over the place - always annoys me! 😂 This is what I came up with: ua-cam.com/video/5D8kYcaeEAc/v-deo.html
Great to hear the instrumental stems in isolation on this track. It's amazing how those individual sounds combine into the final dreamy sonic you hear. I would say there's a LinnDrum machine as well as the live acoustic drums. You can definitely hear the grain and low bit depth of the early Linn hi hats and snare. Some of the percussion also sounds like it's from the Linn. The rhodes I would say are DX7, very crisp and digital sounding. The bass could be DX7 or Emulator, but definitely some FM like digital harmonics in it. String synths I would probably guess Jupiter 8 and/or Yamaha CS80. Definitely Yamaha CS80 on this record. The arpeggios most likely CS80 or Jupiter. That cello sounds awful in isolation but somehow it works in the mix! Definitely Emulator. Thanks for sharing!
39:39 I don't know for sure, but my guess is - since this was produced in the very early 1980s - the idea that they would cut MJ's vocal tracks and pick just the best bits from multiple takes (comping) might not be the case here. They may have had the budget to do so, but making multiple *actual* cuts of the tape and splicing in all the best bits, would have cost a very large sum of money and taken a very long amount of time. I assume they just did multiple takes of the first version of vocal, made some minor edits (maybe Quincy asked MJ to change the style a bit) and then recorded more takes until he got what he wanted. Loved this breakdown. Thank you for the video!!
does anyone else hear the off-key sound in the rhodes? it’s like a high pitch resonance dinging that follows the main melody of the verses? i tried to show my friends but they couldn’t hear it so idk if i’m just mishearing it or if other people can hear it.
I've heard this just ten years ago after multiple playings loud in my car, since then I try to make it listen to people 😂. it's like off-tune carillon song 🎶👌
layering is key ...not what fits together is anything skill set .... I good study I wish record studios were just sell stems, even if they charge four times the cost I'm happy with that it makes me appreciate the artist /tem even more
Have u got Robbie Williams angels cos if I remember correctly I remember he said in an interview he farted while recording it haha would be interesting to see if it's in there
WHATTT😭 the alternate universe where human nature isn’t released😭 that’s crazy because I love carousel and human nature so much ! but they def made the right call
great! one thing though ... No , You won't find any comps of MJ takes on his records., One was chosen, always. He did each one straight through , and that's it with no messing with bits, I assure u that. What a great track, !
I’m sorry I don’t own the copyright so I can’t distribute any of the multitracks. Some people think I am Gatekeeping but I’m just looking out for myself legally.

“Toto” are such a clever band, they’ve worked with so many musicians which is fabulous. ✌️😙

I don't hear it, I think they muted it in final mix. Human Nature was composed by Steve Pocaro.

The Rhodes is Yamaha GS-1
You hit the nail on the head dude! And yes, those cellos had me like how TF did they get in the final mix haha
I have been trying to breakdown the guitar in this song for years, there is so much going on in this song!!!!
I love this song❤️
Definitely Linn Drum with Live drum set overdub.
Love it!
instrumental is just a masterpiece

Yes I've always heard it since I was a kid. Not a lot of people can hear it. Best song!!! Never get tired of it.

This UA-camr Has Great Mixer Software
I think the string pads were from David Paich per some interviews. I think Steve Porcaro played the electric piano and perhaps synth bass as well.
man is it possible to get that project i need to hear it for myself
Produtores monstros
Have you ever tried mixing this with the correct bpm? I simply cannot accurately sync it with 92/93 bpm. It somehow loses it somewhere in the middle.
Where did you get the multi tracks? I had them once but lost them in a crash. They were free on the net years back.
They are leaked
Do mjs "Why u wanna trip on me" audio

HAHAHHAHAHHH no I don’t but I’m going to do my best to find that fart and make it audible in the mix! Hahahahh thanks so much
where can i get this project to study?
This song was close to not ending up on the album, it was in competition with a song called *"Carousel."*
WHATTT😭 the alternate universe where human nature isn’t released😭 that’s crazy because I love carousel and human nature so much ! but they def made the right call
Thank goodness they chose Human Nature. It's my favorite by him.

Excluding Thriller - take a listen to all the vocal takes, not one is the album take in full as they final product was a mix of different takes.

I really thought it was just "scat singing" - as in, vocalizing music - like they would do in jazz. I think you're right with this one!
