    I did some research on the camera and i knew of the differences.Not issues.
    I loved my D850.

    OMG! You got a lens with a bigger front element and complained about needing larger filters. You got a camera without a mechanical shutter and complained about the (configurable!) electronic shutter sound? Really? Try reading the manual! It's not easy to master a modern pro camera body but the sooner you start the earlier you'll succeed!

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  Рік тому +1

      Yes, larger front element on a lens (24-70 f2.8) that from the beginning of time was 77mm. The electronic shutter can be set to a different volume or to ‘off’. Can’t configure it much more than that. No options on different sounds. If the engineers at Mazda could spend 2 years getting the exhaust note in a Miata right then the engineers at Nikon could have come up with something less anemic for a shutter sound in far less time. And if you watched to the end of the video, you would have heard me say, ‘I guess I’ll have to read the (online only; no printed version) manual.’

    • @venietvideo
      @venietvideo Рік тому +1

      Custom camera sounds (shutter, focus acquired, etc.) would be definitely nice to have. Is any brand offering it already?
      Personally, I would prefer other improvements, e.g., accurate histograms for raw images, not the misleading embedded JPG histograms that all brands currently display.

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  Рік тому +1

      @@venietvideo Oh yes. I have been burned so many times by the misleading histograms. And you just reminded me (thank you very much) to set my highlight warning to the R channel rather than the G channel that is set by default. Before I did that I would clip far too many skin tones, especially for pasty people such as myself.
      *edit* Looks like you can't set the RGB histogram to show a single channel like you could in the d500 or d810. I wonder why.

      @leep5113 you must have missed the part where I said, “but I also brought a dSLR backup and shot with it.” C’mon, I’m crazy but not that crazy. Oh, and the manual? 948 pages. AND, it turns out you can’t (for instance) set the highlight warning to show just the red channel (like you can in every other Nikon dSLR I have ever owned). This camera isn’t perfect and it’s going to take some getting used to. The purpose of the video was to show that there is more to a new camera than simply picking it up, no matter how many versions of the same camera you may have owned previously. I have been shooting professionally for more than 20 years. I’m not going to let a new piece of equipment mess anything up too badly, trust me.

    Hi, welcome to the Z cameras. I appreciate your dislike of the generated "shutter" sounds. I was an early adopter of the Z system, starting with the original Z7. A year and a half ago I bought a Z9 and I have been loving it. I prefer to shoot my Z9 with no sound in most cases. I don't need to hear a sound to know I have made an exposure. You will come to appreciate the visual cues in the viewfinder. The only exception to shooting silently, is when I am photographing portraits in natural or constant light. The click is the subject's clue that they can give me a different look. I don't even bother turning it on if I am shooting flash. BTW, turn off the sound in the setup menu - camera sounds. Don't use the silent mode right below the camera sounds control. if you select that, Nikon left that in as a legacy from DSLRs for some reason, and it will shut down triggering of flash. Anyway, the learning curve is a bit daunting foe the Z cameras in general and for the Z8 and Z9 in particular, but it will well worth it. Cheers.

    I have the Z8 since the end of May now. What annoys me the most is that the camera isn't really compatible with most studio flashes when using HSS. My portable flashes (Rollei HS Freeze 6 and 6s) don't really sync with the strobing flashes so that you can see the electronic shutter and/or banding on each photo. That extremely limits my creativity when it comes to flash photography.

      I have the same issue with the GFX 50r and my Profotos when shooting at the max synch speed (not even HSS). I'll check it out with the Z8 and see what I can come up with. There are a few things about the Z8 that I find annoying. Next video will be a list of them along with a review.

    Let me ask you, if have an older car.. say 5-10 years old and your buying a new car, wouldn't you research the new car for all details.. maybeeven test drive? Same principle applies here.. New camera = new accessories, possibly new lenses, new lenses = possibly new filters, new storage cards, maybe even a new computer.. that's why you RESEARCH! cmon now.

      You may have a point. But my research was somewhat limited as I was asked, “you want the camera? Yes or no?” This opportunity came out of nowhere and I didn’t have a lot of time to consider. AND, where was I going to research? Ken Rockwell? Thom Hogan? (He, actually, is someone I would pay attention to) That said, after shooting a few jobs and after reading the entire 948-page manual (yes, I did) have some legitimate (in my mind) beefs about this camera. Spoiler alert: one of them is the absolutely hopeless shutter sound. The other issues will be detailed in a forthcoming video, but in the next video I do need to have a bit more context. Between my d500 and my d810 I shot 350,000 frames, let alone what I shot with the d200, the d300 and the d3x… d70… I know Nikon cameras and the z8 is far from perfect. @@ecobooster8298 I was thinking about the z8, and before that when I got my d500, my d810 and the d3x among others... And every camera has a strange learning curve where the photos look pretty awful at the beginning and as I used the camera they get more and more like how I want them to look. It's possible the camera is changing, but it's also possible I'm just getting used to how it works and I get a sense as to what works, and what doesn't work and how far I can push (or not push) things. Experience is the ultimate test, of course. Some cameras I really bond with (Pentax 67, strangely) and some I just don't (Mamiya 6, also strangely). For digital cameras I love my Fuji much more than I loved any of my Hasselblad digital backs, for sure. No idea why... Thanks for the comments - good luck with that 20mm lens. I have one, too.

Not a big jump from the 810 or the 500 in terms of colour and I will say that having the new lenses is nice - they're tack-sharp (maybe too sharp) and rather lightweight compared to what I'm used to. So far, so good, but the real test will come when I shoot in challenging lighting conditions - that's always where cameras show their best or their worst.

    I was interested in this video but I have to say, I'm a bit flummoxed. Someone wearing a Rolex Submariner in a video like this complaining about the follow up cost of switching to what amounts to basically a new system? That's ... interesting. Also, some really weird assumptions - there is ONLY an electronic shutter on this camera. You WILL get artifacts in specific conditions. The Z8 plain doesn't have a mechanical shutter.
    Maybe this video should have said "I should have thought about it before switching to a new camera" - there seems to be nothing that the camera is actually responsible for to create your frustration. It really seems to come solely from lack of thinking something through ... That would have been a more honest title for the video.

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  11 місяців тому +1

      I’m still sticking to my comment that the shutter sound is a very important aspect of a camera regardless of whether or not it’s mechanical. And the Sub cost a lot less than the camera did - I think I can complain about $1000 in additional costs while wearing a wristwatch I bought a decade ago, which is from 1991. Good catch in identifying it, by the way. As for the title, guilty as charged. It’s pretty click-baiting and I don’t think we will do that again in the future. It sure brought out the comments and the views, though. I plan to do a real review of the camera soon. Just need to put a few hundred more frames through it and bone up on the 948(!!) page manual.

    • @guidon.5413
      @guidon.5413 11 місяців тому

      @@UnderexposedwithAlastairBird - okay, that was hard to see. The Sub hasn't changed much in decades, and size is impossible to gauge in a video. Nice watch btw.
      I understand the frustration, but I'm also sick and tired of clickbait UA-cam titles, too many here as it is. I've also have gone through the frustrations of going mirrorless twice - once from Canon to Fujifilm and then, because I hadn't learned my lesson either, to Nikon Z when the first ones came out. I'm generally not unhappy with the system, so I'll be looking forward to a real review of the Z8. I'm still on a Z6/Z7 II.
      So, good luck with your Nikon Z journey, it's a good system, not perfect, but no system is. I'll likely stick to it for the next decade or so.

    That shutter sound is a little off to me as well. But even if the shutter sound mimicked the Nikon F3, it still wouldn’t be right because there’s no tactile or haptic feedback of that mirror moving. I guess this is just where cameras are heading.
    The Z8’s shutter is a little more sophicated than people give it credit for though. For instance, take a 1-second exposure and you’ll hear that it’s actually a 2-part sound. So after training your ear by hearing the long shutter, it makes the faster shutter sound less of a static click, and more of a 2-part…………static click. OK, so it’s still a static click but it’s different. Try it and tell me what you think. LOL

    Talk about growing pains, wait until you see the manual! Over 800 pages! I haven't really done much photography for a number of years. I set up a D-90 then a D-750 for my wife to use. I used it a few times on trips, but it was her camera. We have retired and I decided it was time to get back to photography, but I wanted my own and wanted to go mirrorless. Since we have Nikon, I decided on the Z8. I have only had it about a week and spent a few hours watching setup videos and looking a the manual, then going through the menu. I have just started playing around with it and poked around a bit and changed my profile, ok menu bank, from A to C without realizing it. Now I am looking and wondering why I am shooting JPG and went back through the menu and seeing all the settings were back to factory. I finally saw the change from A to C and put it back. So, the learning curve, at least for me, is going to be like Mt. Everest! It will take me quite a bit of time to get comfortable, especially since the weather is going to be down into the single digits here in the Southeast. I will also have to bread down and get a flash, something I haven't used since my film days. So, I feel your pain and the struggle is real.

I didn’t want to just toss my investment in Nikon, so I patiently waited. Then the ZF was released. I love this camera. Great shutter sound, BTW. First thing I discovered was that my godox flashes weren’t working in TTL mode. It required some IT gymnastics and a new usb-A micro cord to update the firmware. I have the same tether issue as well. I’ll get a new cord eventually. Don’t shoot tethered enough to replace it right away. My G1 Tamron lenses were iffy with the FTZ adapter, so I replaced those. And my extra 3rd party batteries, which I kept as backups do not work with the new ZF, so had to get a new backup. Good luck with the z8! I see a lot of cameras being blown away and floating in the air. Lets get some context. A few yrs back I was craving to get the D5 and I had my 300 f2.8 for wildlife with TC's. The the D850 came along and I bought it for at the time a massive price. I had young and old wildlife photographers with lesser gear in envy. 5 yrs later, people still shoot the D5 and D850 others mover on to Z9/8 and new Z mount lenses. Those who aspired to the D5 and D850 now buy these cameras at bargain prices. They produce fantastic images, them might not have the speed or the eye detection of other stuff, but man the IQ remains fantastic. So I can buy a D850 with a 300 f2.8 vr with TC 1.4iii used in top condition for 40% of the price of a Z8 with the new 400 f4.5. So we sit in a hide or somewhere here in Africa and both photograph a pride of lions or Cheetah hunt etc. we get home, process and print our images. and the differance in IQ ?? Depends on the skill of the photographer yes but both are crazy sharp lenses, both bodies have the mp files, the D850 might require the photographer to use more skill focusing on the eye. So who blows away who? This constant, Z blows away A or C or F? really?

    I recently rented a Z8 to take photos at an airshow for the 20fps. Despite watching numerous setup videos, I only had a day to practice with the camera before the airshow. I brought my D850 batteries (2), plus the battery that came with the Z8 rental. However, even with three batteries, they ran out with 30+ minutes left of the Blue Angels performance. To my disappointment, when reviewing the photos, they didn't match the consistency of previous airshow photos taken with my D850.

      yep but you could have used the grip on the d850 with the d5 batterys and one battery would have lasted all day an then some .........

      That's because it's a Nikon. Nikon has always had problems with their mirrorless cameras since they produced their very first one.

    Soooo the camera works great but your moaning because you impulse bought the camera without looking into what you need to make it fit with how you work.

      Did you see our next video on the z8? The one where I have (I think) a bunch of legitimate beefs with the camera? I think with the latest firmware update and me getting used to (and ignoring and learning to live with) the quirks of the camera, it's a better fit for me now. There is still no way to set the highlight clipping warning to the red channel, though. And I still randomly get focus peaking when I put the 20mm lens on. The z6iii feels more sorted, but it has its own set of issues.

    Filming video on a Z camera vs a d850 is night and day! But agreed the shutter sound is BRUTAL on z cameras. There are a couple on Z9 that are not bad, but the correct move would have been and still continues to be to release a TON of historical DSLR nikon shutter slaps and let people nostalgia out and pick the one they like. That is the move. Still hoping for it.

    You are really getting roasted in these comments? I find the outspoken level of dismissiveness to be surprisingly funny because other youtubers have dogged the Z8/Z9 as well, and were not dragged this badly. Maybe it's just you, bro. What did you to the people to make them so prickly towards your video? LOL.
    BTW, the Z8 is quite spectacular.

      Yeah, this video touched a few nerves. We did a follow-up where I went through even more issues I had with the z8 (after shooting with it for a while) and that had fewer people complaining to me because, well, I could actually point to the camera set up and say what my problems were. Still shooting with the z8, still love the GFX 50sii more but the z8 does the job for many things.

      There are some helpful comments, for sure. And some unhelpful ones. And of the 63 videos we have done not a single one has less than about 90% likes... Except for the 2 videos we did on the z8 (like 60% and 75%, I think?). The worst thing is that I have now found that the z8, unlike the d500 and the d810 will not allow you to view the red channel in the highlights clipping window. Which means that you get to overexpose the red channel in your photos while believing that the image isn't overexposed. I did it today, I did. I'm going to do a video on that, too - and that's a major flaw in this camera. Like MAJOR flaw. The Nikon community might not like it very much...

    What an ancient!! I thought you were to complain about overheating or something, not about being from a different generation. Not informative at all.

      Check out our other z8 video. That’s where I list all the shortcomings of the z8. Can you set the highlight clipping warning to the red channel like the d500 and the d810? Nope…

      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird Casey from Camera Conspiracies makes this rant about every camera.
      Thus, every camera has shortcomings. How about teaching how to overcome certain shortcomings to make it stronger rather than being a contrarian about them, or just buy the perfect camera.
      I love my Z8, and I loved my Fuji XT 4 and the XH2. I love the Z8 most, but its biggest shortcoming is its weight and size, but that's all relevant to full frame vs. APC now, isn't it.
      Nikon has an awesome lens line up that won't break the bank, and the Z9, Z8, Z6 III, and the retro ZF cameras are fairly priced for what they each bring to the table.
      There is the Canon R5 II and various Sony Camera's up for grabs, each with their own shortcomings.

      @@technodronesogxl9783 We can agree there is no perfect camera - and goodness knows I have bought more than my fair share of cameras looking for it.
      As described in the next video we did on the z8, here is one MAJOR shortcoming, where I'm scratching my head with Nikon. That's where they took away the ability (on at least the D3x, D500, D800 and D810 among many others) to set the highlight clipping warning to the red channel (or the green or the blue, if you're so inclined)
      This was a feature of the camera I relied on greatly, as I do a lot of portraiture and red highlights clip first and when they do, they're really hard to recover. In the z8, the highlight warning is set to the green histogram, which not only clips last but also has twice the photo sites of red or blue. (Bayer pattern array).
      I have gone through the entire 948 page manual and no luck.
      The z8 is a great camera - I love it. Like every camera it's hardly perfect and flawed in its own way. However, in this one issue it has regressed greatly from previous models and I would love to know the reason why.
      If I were to just fawn all over the z8 then my review wouldn't be of much interest - and to your suggestion I tell people how to work around this issue - my only suggestion would be to bone up on your metering and make sure you're not clipping, no matter what the gamut warning tells you.
      I'll still shoot with the z8 and now that I know about the different compression algorithms, I might just sell my z6iii and buy another z8 - that's how much I like it.
      I guess we'll all have to keep digging for that perfect camera.
