I’m gonna be about controversial here, and to clarify before I say anything I fully support treating all players with respect and dignity. At the same time, this season of MCC at least, the alienation of the competitive fan has been completed. I know skill based tierlists have issues, but they are completely dead in the fandom, as are the huge amount of discussion that consistently happens in the comment sections. In a similar vein, having fewer people interested in player performance comparisons has dwindled interest in stats posts especially general ones, and the number of users doing high effort posts has gone down as a result, being that cool stats post were always a large proportion of those. Less competitive fans find them cool, but don’t dig into the discussion aspect nearly as much for fear of making an inappropriate skill related statement about a player who might see it. Additionally, the lack of skill related discussions has reduced what I call “creator patriotism” among redditors; basically if a stat or someone else’s tier list underrated your main POV, you feel obligated to engage and defend them, which in turn encourages you to make positive player specific posts on their behalf. Look at the MCC Reddit now, there are almost literally zero player specific posts anymore that aren’t a stream clip, a congratulations immediately after an event, or birthday post. That element of the community which used to have quirky/unserious stat posts, general discussions, memes, and the like is 100% dead. The most that happens nowadays is “teams for X person” with at best three sentences of explanation per team. And as much as the run of special events has been super cool, it’s further alienated the competitive fan, as has the scrapping of canon/non-canon. Right or wrong, that change made it much harder for the few performance comparing discussions to happen, and the run of questionably canon events has left fans who still want a definitely “canon” event even if they won’t competitively debate it severely wanting. And I think MCC was aware of this as a possibility when this change was made, because of the hermit and hermit adjacent surge in 4KO and to a lesser degree following events. Hermitcraft-type fans are what (I think) MCC wants most of their fans to be like; they’re usually not caught up in skill comparisons (or at least leave it unspoken), are very supportive of all creators involved hermit or no (for example we joke about H adopting hermits, but a lot of hermit viewers in turn kinda adopted H at least during MCCs or Jojo with TIES), and are super passionate about their individual favorites with tons of fan art and historical discussion and speculation on the Hermitcraft and Life Series subreddits. And yet MCC’s fan art community is also at an all time low; the transition hasn’t worked yet, if it’s going to at all. As someone who partially found MCC and later the whole event scene through Hermitcraft, a lot of the Hermitcraft fanbase in general views MCC as an extracurricular activity their streamer partakes in rather than a fundamental part of their content, because that is the case rn. Hermit audiences are awesome, but they haven’t shown they’ll jump full force into MCC fandom, partially because many Hermits themselves are sitting on the fence (which they absolutely have the right to do) doing an occasional event or special team rather than becoming a recurring roster member. In my opinion, this is just opinion, the comp of MCC’s average event is just too high for a true massive and regular hermit influx of both players and viewers, and it’s not like MCC can or especially wants to just boot half of the top/second frags to make that possible. I think they hoped they could strike a middle ground, but at least so far it hasn’t translated to a resurgence of fan activity. Now to be clear, I’m not saying we should be more lax about respecting competitors in Minecraft events, but it’s important to recognize that discouraging skill comparisons in every way like has happened does alienate a chunk of the MCC audience that are explicitly MCC fans as much as they are of any creator in MCC. These are the types that in my experience carried the Reddit through between event and season droughts. And even if that stance on competitive discussion can’t change, there has to be a way to replace or reclaim those fans to capture that passion that used to linger between events and seasons. *Rude or no, appropriate or no, those skill based discussions were passionate, and that passion has been sorely missed even if its subject matter arguably hasn’t been (especially by players).* Idk how that happens honestly without further big risky changes to event formula. One of MCC’s strengths has been that they were a nexus of Minecraft-sub communities in the fandom, nowadays people from those subcommunities still exist in the fandom, but the cultural exchange is only reducing, at that’s one thing that leaning into one sub community more than others doesn’t aid. I could be completely wrong, I’m not an expert or have any experience with actually managing an event or fandom thereof, but having been around MCC since the first event as a viewer and community member, this is what I see. Feel free to dissect and disprove in the replies, let’s have a discussion rather than watch in silence as event communities erode.
This is probably the most accurate thing I've seen all year about mcc, I don't know how you went into this much detail. If I could add and I may be totally wrong about this but I feel the reason in the fall of mcc content is mainly due to the lack of new players being added to the main event such as content creators from different communities such as life steal or the speed running community. I really feel that this will boost discussion of the event as these communities usually have competitive fan bases, and competitive fans usually like to engage in talks about how their favourite content creator is doing. Also I may be the only one who thinks this but in mcc I see a lot of repeated teams or at least a lot of the players are always grouped up with similar players so adding newer creators may solve this problem.
I can agree with a lot of what you're saying in this comment, the competitive side of things does bring a positive to the community of MCC, but I also understand why MCC doesn't lean into the competitiveness all that much. Another thing that should be considered is that the players might have impact of MCC's decision-making as well, which I don't often see considered by the audience :P
@@wolfeeiiThe impact of players on the event decision making is definitely something I haven’t put much thought into, thanks for highlighting that; I often draw Minecraft events too parallel to pro sports leagues where players have little say on league operations, and that difference is important nuance to consider. And I do appreciate the positives of MCC not leaning hard into competitiveness (at least the ones I think I understand), I’ve just watched the subreddit lose steam as competitive discussion has become increasingly less accepted (and maybe it’s correlation not causation, who knows), and I love seeing the community bustling rather than faltering. But hey, there’s always more than one solution to a given problem, we can find a way to get the best of both worlds, activity and respect.

Updates are normally once every couple of months but there's definitely a lot going on in the community as well you could talk about. There was actually a small update a few days ago that added some new maps and introduced some very controversial rocket spleef rush changes so you could maybe do a video on that

the problem with mcc for me is that i feel like they're throwing too many different things at once, the only "regular" event of season 4 we've had is MCC 4KO, which was in May, and by the end of September, we will have had 5 events that are "special", P24 being Pride-based, TRE and TR3 being based on TwichCon, EC being based on Minecraft's 15th anniversary, and R3 being based for new players, sort of missing the regular feel of MCC, like the balance has been shifted too much into something that I can't even explain cause I don't know how to...
I can see it but there's probably a very good reason for it. I also think a lot of the special events this year were things that were scheduled to happen well in advance, so there may just not have been any room for a "regular" event anymore!
rookies also isn't exclusively for players who haven't won before, greninja was in rookies 1 despite winning bw 3, so sneeg and hansum could still appear in a rookies if they have a balanced team to go along with
Its honestly kinda crazy how much you are carrying the event community on the youtube (and reddit indirectly) side of the community. I remember when my feed was filled with event clips or practice stream highlights before and after events and like 5 team reactions/streams but nowadays I never see anything event related on youtube besides update videos, just straight up vods, and like the very very rare upload of a winners pov of an event or something similar to fruits recent video. (Which is probably why people enjoy feinberg funny cause it gives that old event community feel) Its kinda funny thinking about how bigger the event scene has gotten in the last 2 years or so and it still somehow feels like the core event community is like the fraction of the size but then again its also not that surprising if you really think about it. Mcc: somebody alr mentioned this but the current direction of mcc has alienated a lot of the competitive viewers of mcc, and although mcc still gets a great amount of viewership per event, most of that comes from hermits whos fanbase barely consumes event content besides on team announcement days and the literal day of the event. Blockwars: blockwars is trying to be a variety creator minecraft event which is insanely cool and unique but the community for blockwars still very much is centered around minecraft watchers and not really growing outside of your mogul mails. (which definitely helps a lot) Also same thing that i said about hermits apply here for the viewers of the vairety streamers but its even more noticeable. (i rarely see a good amount of blockwars players mention they are playing blockwars on their twitter or streams besides being like "oh yeah minecraft event on Saturday"which doesn't help the exposure or getting new people more interested in blockwars) Pb: pb is kinda weird cause it has a very very big popularity in the event testing community and among a lot of the communities of prominent pb players like toph and ubhi but besides that its still relatively small and it doesnt really have any space for you to talk about pb besides in twitch chats or private discord servers. Even with all that its probably still my favorite community since i just know everyone in it and its probably the event community with the least amount of communication gap between players/event devs and viewers leading to amazing conversations and healthy debate.
