Tiagra 4700 shifters work with GRX 812 rd and 11-42 10sp.
Tiagra 4700 shifting is much, much better than my own 105 5700. Both are 10-speed, but that's where the similarities end - the shift quality is very different. The front shifts in particular are a huge improvement as they're so light.
True Tiagra 4700 is the same quality if not better than the Old Shimano 5600 and 5700 external external cable STI brake/shift levers.
I have been using these shifters with a ultegra rear derailleur for almost a year. Works great! I'm set up with a double 46/34 and a roadlink with 11-42 10spd in the back. They haven't failed me up a hill yet!! Also, love the Supple sticker in the background of this vid.
how's this been working out for you, and which Ultegra RD are you using? that 11-42 upgrade is something i really want to do tbh.
I’m running 46/30 at the front with 11-42 at the back with a £5 dropout extender off eBay. About 2k miles in and all ok for loaded gravel rides
I actually just put a Deore XT 11-36 rear cassette on my wife's Tiagra 4700 equipped bike last week to help her with the steep climbs, can attest to the fact that it does indeed work quite well
hey James.
whats the size of the rear mech Bro?
Is it short or medium?
I just bought Cannondale caadx tiagra '17, and im missing those extra sprockets for stiff climbing.
That could solve my problem :)
Ch
Cheers mate.
take care
Pawel Kuczyński I imagine it is a long cage but I'm not sure. However I just measured from the center of 1 jockey wheel to the center of the other and it was about 3 1/2 inches
hey!
Thanx for quick response man!!!
Much respect!
Look, Tiagra makes only short or medium cage mechs.
i got the short one.
Shifting on thi one is actually brill!!
soo smooth, like on my xc bike with xt shadow 1x10.
id like to put same cassette to my gravel bike.
but i think i need new mech.
Over last few days ive found it difficult to climb up to the stiff hill, and thats where im living,
So its also my commuter bike.
My mtb has 38 oval narrow wide chainring and xt shifter, cassette (11-36) and 10 sp shadow mech.
in CAADX i got 46/36 crankset, 12-28 cassette. and im missing sort of difference btw the gears.
SHIFTING IS SMOOTH.
I COULD SAY EVEN SMOOTHER THAN IN XT!!
But its much harder to keep my cadency.
What would You recommend man?
Could You pls send me a pic of the mech at emigrabass(a)gmail.com??
ill know straight away whats the size of it.
The 4700 is one tough groupset. I upgraded from Sora 3500 to the Tiagra 4700 a year ago after watching SickBiker's video on his friend's torture-tested 4700 clocking 11,000km!
I got Sora 3000, couldn't be happier
shouldve just went to 105 0 difference only 1 gear
@@Lore-cg2jg tiagra can do triple, so it has 30 vs 22 gears of the 105
Another "secret" feature of the 4700 shifters is that you can use your old 10-speed rear derailleur with 8-speed cassettes. It's confusing to mix a hybrid shifter intended for use with 11-speed derailleurs and 10-speed cassettes with a 7-8-9-10-speed derailleur and an 8-speed cassette, but it works pretty well. I'm doing this on the hydraulic 4720 set with post-mount calipers.
I "upgraded" my old 105 to Tiagra and love it. I now have it on two bikes. I went with the 105 brakes for my road bike though. Better stopping power. Nice vid.
Hello, is there much difference in the braking power of a Shimano 105 r7000 with the Tiagra 4700? Do your brakes work well with the Tiagra levers? thank you
@@emiliojaravasquez914 I put 105 brakes on a Claris groupset bike. There's heaps more power than stock
11-40 is working great too, I've 50-34 in front, 50f/40b is not recommended but with 116 links like a charm.
Hi , which cassette do you use , I'm thinking about upgrading my 11-34 cassette to a larger one as well ... Thanks
Benjamin Sozzi The only 11-40 i’ve try is a Sunrace.
I have the whole groupset on my road bike (Giant TCR Advanced) and have no complaints. I had 105 11s before and apart from having one less speed, I think it does go out of tune a bit more often, but apart from that, works just as well.
Hello Arthur. Which cassette did you end up running? Im in the middle of a TCR advanced build myself. Was debating which cassette to get.
I'm used to Dura Ace Di2 and AXS. I was gifted a bike with this Tiagra. Initially I didn't like the idea of old 10 spd and the fact Tiagra is overweight. But after riding the bike I realize Tiagra can pretty much do everything a Di2 or eTap 😂 I enjoyed it.
Its all down to the rider ✌🏻
Left shifter sometimes has a warranty-able issue where it stops shifting. also shares 11spd pull rates so you can run 11spd derailleurs. pretty great group for the price
Sadly this is true in my case. :-(
Hydraulic Tiagra 47 is awsome. Nice crisp and smooth shifting that just works. It defintley has a distinct crispness and precise feel of high end Shimano. I don't mind 10 speed for cheaper chains, and cassettes. The brakes are just awsome and modulate very well.
Pro tip....the 4700 now has the same cable pulls as higher groupsets so its possible to upgrade to 105 or Ultegra bit by bit (105 rear derailleur, front derailleur and brakes will work perfectly with 4700 shifters and ten speed 4700 cassette
How they are 11 speed
@@Max__apex all you have to do is make sure the shifters and cassette match in terms of speed number
I think the new Tiagra is the best value in the lineup right now- great performance overall. I think Shimano made a funny transition to using their 11 speed cable pull ratio with the 4700 drivetrain, which is why the performance is so potato with the old RD. Great video, but wrong "its"!
Thanks, useful, I did not know the new Tiagra uses the same pull as 11 speed.
Good to know as want to stay 10 speed pull
Another hidden feature in 4700 is that you can run 4700 shifters with any 11 speed road Shimano derailleurs since the pull ratio is the same. This is why you couldn't run your old Tiagra rear derailleur with the new 4700 shifters. You can also run 105/Ultegra/DA 11 speed shifters with a Tiagra rear derailleur with an 11 speed cassette and it will work perfectly.
And how are you only running a 36/36 low gear on a loaded bike? Even with a 42 rear and 36 front, I still grind on climbs on my loaded rig.
I agree the gearing is steep. Still using the stock gearing that came with a Warbird. It was designed more of a gravel race bike than a loaded touring bike. Slowly upgrading the components to be more touring friendly.
The reason you can't use the older 4600, 4500 etc rear derailleurs with the new 4700 shifters is that their pull ratio (their RESPONSE) is 1.7 and their cable PULL DISTANCE isn't the same.
Yes, the new 4700 10sp system uses the pull ratio of 1.4, the same as the 11sp systems, so you can mix'n'match the derailleurs, but the cable PULL DISTANCE is still different at 2.8mm compared to 2.7mm for 11sp so you can't use an 11sp cassette with the 4700 shifters.
confused... you said exactly what I did except you added the 2.7 vs 2.8 mm. I think you misunderstood my post.
OK, I understand. I've amended the response.
Are you telling me I only need to purchase an 11spd rear derailleur and cassette to turn my 4700 equipped bike to 11spd?
Personally, I love SRAM Rival 1 / Force 1 for adventure riding, but it s a preference.
Also, on Shimano 10sp you can run older Shimano XT rear derailleurs to use them with a 11-36 cassette.
Secret feature at 2:38
Works with a 36 tooth rear cassette, unmodified.
Thank you. 👌🏻
FYI, I was able to fit a 40 tooth. By shortening the chain by just two or four links (1x in the front) the guide cog is pulled even lower, I have less than a millimeter of clearance between the largest sprocket and the derailleur cog. But it works, completely, perfectly.
The Tiagra 4700 seems to work also with the Shimano GRX RD-RX400 10spd rear derailleur. At least that's used in the Cube Nuroad Pro. Not sure if it allows any larger sprockets in the casette than the 36T, though.
It is designed to work with road 11 speed rear derailleurs too. Designed to be compatible
Last year Shimano released Sora R3000 9 speed and this year Claris R2000 8 speed which are trickle-downs from this/105/Ultegra. I use Sora with 50-34 / 11-34 and I'm pretty satisfied by durability & performance.
I use that Claris. I prefer 8 speed due to chain thickness on my main bike, so far very happy with it. I have an old 7 speed SLX on my gravel bike and Microshift 9 speed on my road bike, the Claris is a lot better.
Same here
Tiagra 4700 + cs-hg62 11-36
The stated maximum of the derailleur is a 34 tooth cassette. As shimano is very conservative an extra 2 teeth is well in range. Also having a 46/36 you have another two teeth before you reach the derailleur capicity. 46/34 or 46/32 would give a better range.
The tooth capacity of the medium cage 4700 series tiagra is 41. So with a 34-11 cassette, you have 23 teeth for the rear, leaving you a range of 18 on the front theoretically. Although normally max cog diffferences on the front are 16, and front derailleurs aren't designed for bigger jumps.
The difference is the 4700 shifters use the same cable/pulley pull as 11 speed. So they should be the best 10 speed shifters to be had.
so this shifters would work with a 105 deraullier?
I just installed these levers. Running it with an RD-RX400 rear derailleur and a Sunrace 11-32 cassette. When shifting from 11 to 12 to 13, I find it very inconsistent. May shift fine one time but the next time I may need to give a bit of extra tension despite hearing and feeling the index click in the lever. Going from 13 to 12 to 11 is not as inconsistent but not 100% perfect.
I'm also not crazy about the way the cable/ housing comes out of the levers. In older levers, the cables were positioned more to the top of the lever. On these new models, the gear cable exits along the side of the lever and the brake cable just above it. On the particular bars I am working with and the position the rider wants the levers at, the result is a big gap at the bend before the cables get routed along the horizontal top of the bars. Pulling it back with tape just adds unnecessary strain/ stress to the setup.
I can so answer this question. Use a Shimano 10 speed cassette. I swapped from a 12-28 Tigara cassette to a SRAM and HATED IT. The shifting was so inconsistent. I swapped back to a OEM cassette and never looked back.
It's a great value for sure. So is the new Sora group for 9 speed applications, especially where increased durability is desired.
I feel like the new Tiagra 4700 is similar in look and quality of the previous 105-5700. My 2011 Felt came with mostly 105-5700, but had a piece of junk FSA square taper crankset, which I upgraded last year to a Tiagra 4700 hollowtech compact crankset with Ultegra outboard bearing BB. Shifting chainrings was HUGELY improved over the FSA junk. And that's with a 105-5700 10sp front mech.
Patrick94GSR well no shit they just relabel the model up and the year before
105 will also run fine with 36t cassette. I've had mine set up this way for a few years. 👍
It's a bit hit and miss. Some derailleur hangers don't let it happen, some do.
My 105 5600 RD just got damaged and I am wondering if the Tiagra 4700 Long cage will work with my old setup. I have a Tiagra 4603 shifter, SRAM PG1020 11-36t 10speed cassette. Thank you in advance for your advice.
This is a really nice groupset and I’m so happy shimano made it
I was setting up my rim brake Road Bike with the GRX 400 components using a Tiagra 4700 shifters as advised by Shimano. Due to scarcity of parts I had source them individually from other countries. At present I have all the GRX 400 components including the 36t 10 speed cassette except for the RD (and its causing me sleepless nights). As the GRX 400 FD has a chainline of +2.5mm do you think I could still run the 36t cassette using a Tiagra 4700 RD?
I have a Sora 3500 9 speed system on a cyclocross bike with 50/34 upfront and 11-32 in the back. I just found an affordable set of tiagra 4700 shifters mounted on bars from an all city space horse. My question is can I use the 4700 shifters with the Sora RD and FD for the time being while I wait to source an affordable Tiagra cassette, chain, FD and RD?
Bonus feature - get the Tiagra triple front shifter and a 105 rear shifter. Same shift geometry, same hood shape. Triple 11 speed!
Why on earth would you want triple chainset
@@Carftymk Because triple is the best
I am currently building a road bike with new Tiagra 4700 shifters and would like to find some info on how to install the shift and brake cables. I have a 105 10 speed cassette and a 105 10 speed derailleur. I've built several bikes but never had to run cable through road levers. Any help would be appreciated.
4700 Rear Derailleur works with 11 speed shifters as does the GRX RX 400
Well... Tiagra is really a great value option. The full groupset is available for 390€ tax included in Eu.
I have Tiagra 4700 on one of my road bikes. It’s very good. Shifting is crisp. And, frankly, 10 speeds is perfectly adequate.
It’s about Tiagra’s turn for an update. I can’t imagine what Shimano might do with it. The only real weak spot is the brakes. I run 105 brakes instead.
I am going to rebuild the wheelset on my 1990 Giant Yukon MTB. I want to go with this Tiagra 4700 groupset. I need to find a 36h hub 135mm that I can run with this groupset. I have 26.5" wheels so it will be much more cost effective for me to simply rebuild them with the correct hub....I just need to find it. If you have any good info please share. Thanks for making this video!
this groupset shifts so nicely, it beat my ultegra 6700 by a country mile
I'd maybe spring for the 105 11speed shifters with a long cage ultegra RD. I think the 6800 ultegra is coming down in price as well since the new ultegra is out. But I dig the tiagra set. I keep reading good things about it.
34T was the stated capacity on the Shimano documents, but will look into the 36T option when its time to upgrade. I got the 34T on my Tiagra and its solid.
Will this work on my rebuild? Tiagra 4700 full groupset. Shimano MTB 36h hub and simply change cassette to something like the Sunshine 10 Speed 11-40 / 11-42t MTB Bike Cassette? Would be upgrading to drop bars as well.
I've managed to get the 4700 to work with a 40t Sunrace cassette in the back. I expected to need a hanger extender (if I could get it to work at all) but it actually worked with the regular hanger.
1st time i bought a 4700 rd closed my eyes and used an old deore xt 10spd 11-36 and.... it fits! so i guess i kinda already know what the secret is. i thought the secret had to do something with the shifters
I am having a hard time adjusting my tiagra 4700 rd.. medium cage i am also using a 11-36T cassette.. but cant shift to the 36T... Is there anything i need tl do?
Do you remember what model cassette you used?
Tq for this post. Just change my T4700 cassette with HG50 11-36t
Hi, can i know what is the model of the cassette? Thank you!
The cable as well as the hydraulic 4700's can run a GRX 400 rear de as well as a GRX 812 rear de and you can get up to 42 (I even got to 46 t with both 400 required longer b screw, 812 did not and it works just fine as a 10 speed.) The deal here is Tiagra 4700 has the same pull ratio as all of shims 11 speed stuff and also all the current GRX. Shimano used to have same ratios for 9 speed MTB and Road. They learned and make them different to cheat you into having to buy more of their $hit. Hence $$ expensive GRX stuff. They also make it f&^king impossible to find the derailleur cable thread hole on the hydraulic levers.
I run an 11-34 cassette to 30-46 chainrings no problem with 4700 Tiagra shifters and medium cage derailleur.
daftpeasant 30-46 chainrings? On what crankset?
I use a spa cycles TD2 super compact crankset with old school square BB on my Genesis croix de Fer 2016. Its basically a road triple crankset with rings on the two inner positions and an alloy bash guard as an outer ring. Also gives me an option of going triple chain rings (24,34,46 with 11-32 cassette) if I change the front derailleur and brifter guts. FSA did a 30-46 double last year but it was about twice the price of the spacycles set-up.
I,m UK based and spacycles is in Harrogate, Yorkshhire, UK
Can Tiagra 4700 shifters be used with Shimano 105 5600 derailleur? Thanks.
No, the cable pull ratios are different. I forgot to take that into account when I rebuilt my bike with Tiagra ST-4700 STI levers, so I've ended up running an almost-complete Tiagra 4700 groupset, minus the brakes and cassette, which are still 105 5600.
Hey Man, love your video! Anyway, I do have a question. I have an ultegra rx8000 rd with clutch. I'm just wondering if I can use a tiagra 4700 flat bar shifter? Since most of the comments here says tiagra 4700 have the same pull ratio on newer versions of shimano road shifters (105, ultegra, and maybe dura ace). Appreciate your input. Thanks!
Hi there. Is it possible to combine Tiagra RD-4700-GS rear-dreleur with 10-Speed Ultegra shifter?
Very good information about Tiagra!
Sounds like a great upgrade at a good price. Thanks.
Is the old FD interchangeable with these r4700 shifters?
Does 4700 tiagra work with 10s MTB rear derailleurs?
no
You can use a Deore Rear derailleur on that
Im using a 11-36t cogs right now is it ok to up it to 11-40t? or no?
Depends on the derailleur.
@@PathLessPedaledTV im using Tiagra r 4700 right now
I can't decide whether to get tiagra levers and run cable discs or use grx levers which are hydraulic only. Everybody raves about the ergonomics of the grx.
Did you have to change out the chain to match the Cassette? I am trying this right now and my drive train is really rough. After playing with it I think my 10 speed 36 tooth XT cassette might run smooth if I get a xt 10 speed chain as I am trying to use the Tiagra 10 speed chain with very poor results. Please let me know what you think.
I'm running st-4700, RD-R8000 (upgraded the RD4700 to Ultegra, but using the 11sp derailleur) and the CS-M771 (XT 11-34) on a CN-6701 chain and it runs perfectly.
How much weight can this hold?
Good video as always! One suggestion: you mean "its" in the title since it's possessive (it's=it is). I tell you this out of love! Keep up the informative and entertaining content.
Good thing I checked the comments before posting, because I was going to write the same thing.
came here to say this too. Russ is making my brain hurt!
Same.
Is this groupset (4700) compatible with mechanical disc brakes?
Yes
Hello. I find the brake levers really hard to squeeze in the upper hand position. Do you have any idea to improve it?
Many greetings j
Maybe time to change the cables and their envelopes
Just ride slower mate 😉
If you have small hands, they make levers that are easier for small hands people
Can the shifters work with a deore rear derailler?
Nice video, some really good insights. Did you have to get a longer chain? Im currently running a 50/34 crankset, will it fit a 36t in the back?
Yes. Will need a longer chain for sure.
Will the 4700 rear derailleur work with a 36 10 speed cassette? Or would a shimano deore 9 speed rear rear derailleur work?
Is there any way to get an opening in the front chain guide near the pedals so i literally dont have to break the chain to do a routine cleaning?
No.
Get a chain cleaner and a dummy hub. Its easier to clean it on the bike imho. You might as well get a few quick links too if you decide to remove the chain.
Which chain do you use ?
How about the front derailleur?
4600 had gear indicators, 4700 does not. I can fit 11-36 on 4600rd no problem. Ergonomic on 4600 feels better for me...
what do you guys think about doing Recumbent trike bike tour?
I Have A Question Why My Tiagra Sti is Only Shifting 9 Speed? But its Tiagra, Thank you if you notice
is 4700 shifter compatible with FD4600?
Thanks for the video, did you have to change to a longer chain when switching the cassette to a 12-36
Yes.
Hello And thanks
hi there is some sort of gap created between the two shifter handles of my rear derailer can we fix that please i need advice on that....
The 4700 Rear derailleur is actually only compatible with the 4700 shifter, too. This bothers the heck out of me, because it's the only one in the shimano lineup that's like that.
This is only kinda true. The new 4700 Tiagra is essentially a 10spd system with 11 spd cable pull. So you can run any new 11spd shimano "road" rear derailleur with the 4700 shifters and it will work. I do not believe 4700 shifters are backwards compatible with 4600, Russ may have insight on the the front der working with the 4700 shifter.
4700 shifters work with the 4600 front der. A little stiff on the upshift though.
Yep, the 4700 shifters should work with 11spd Shimano road rear derailleurs. I read that now Sora R3000 uses the same pull ratio too. Not sure about Claris R2000.
The 5800 (106) and 6800 (Ultegra) rear deraileurs work with the 4700 shifters. Essentially the shifters are the same internals as Ultegra but only have 10 clicks on the retchet rather than 11.
Hi guys!
what about the compability with tiagra 4700 rd and Ultegra 6700 sti? I have problems running this setup on my bike, either the two smallest OR the two biggest cogs dont work. The thing is, I have this setup on my self made frame (got a video on my channel - check it out if u like), and the guys at the bike shop say, the frame is the problem. Any ideas? I appreciate your answers!!!
Ciao, Chris
I have the Tiagra 4700 shifters and rear mech on my Diverge, i can say the front shifter lasted 3 rides before it started rattling like crazy and the shifting even with the 4700 rear mech feels a bit lazy, i have managed to fit a 36 tooth Shimano Xt cassette with no probs, there is a review of the diverge and gears on my channel if anybody interested.
so is there just one cage length tiagra 4700 rear derailleur? I have this set and I am afraid to put in anything bigger than 28t
I believe the are multiple lengths.
Trying to install this groupset. Can someone please just tell me which goes to the rear and which to front. Left or right. I looked everywhere and can not find it
Right goes to the rear. Left goes to the front.
Tiagra - 20 speed RD-4700 or Sora - 18 speed RD- 3000 ? which one u recommend
Haven't tried the Sora, but the shifting on Tiagra is pretty good.
Are the silver tiagra NLA?
Everything is NLA right now.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Ain’t that the truth 😂
I was also thinking about upgrading from Sora to 4700. Do you know if I can keep my left Sora shifter or does the front derailleur also have a different pull ratio?
Suppose you could just have tiagra at the rear. If anything like me I hardly use left shifter
I Have A Question Why My Tiagra Sti is Only Shifting 9 Speed? But its Tiagra
Probably because your Tiagra is from several years ago when it was 9speed. Certainly not the 4700 groupset.
which cassette is used, Deore Xt Cs-m771-10 ?
i have bike with SHIMANO DEORE RD-T6000SGS , my question is can i use tiagra 4700 brifter on it?.
no
What your getting for the money its a deal. The Tiagra is very good for a week end warrior. 10 speed is fine and the 52/36 is great also. What not to like?
Thank you. Can you pls tell me what year your orange warbird is please
+Joe P 2016
What is the model number of that cassette?
Is there any working STI out there, thats working with the following components?
Shimano Deore RD-M5120-SGS, 10-Speed
Shimano Deore FD-M6025-H, Downswing, 31.8mm Clamp
Shimano BR-MT200/UR300, Hydr, Disc Brake, PM/FM (160/160)
Want to add dropbars to my hardtail MTB since iam used to them from my roadbike. Lets call this project "franken-gravel".
Hope someone can help out, even just providing sources where i can check myself would be helpful.
Hei, thank you for the review! can you please tell me what kind of bag support do you fave on front?thx!
KlickFix for a Swift Paloma
when do all the magazines recognize that you do not need dura ace or ultegra or 105? I run Sora 9-speed internal routing and I am quite happy with it. Only disadvantage is the weight. But if weight rules I will switch to SRAM.
What was the secret feature again? Sure all that was mentioned is in the spec/
Wouldnt be a secret if it was mentioned in the spec.
The shifters are great, but the Tiagra brakes are garbage!
Yeah. Ours are pulling BB7s.
What's wrong with Tiagra brakes? IMO all of Shimano's rim brakes are at least good, and is the last component I would upgrade if performance was the only metric.
I didn't even know those existed, my bike which was setup with a tiagra group-set actually came with a pair of unbranded brake calipers, which weren't amazing either. But not bad.
I have the tiagra 4700 with 50/34 crank and 12/28 cassette and never regretted it. anyone that wants cassette bigger than 11/30 in their road bikes should get a mountain bike instead. ✌️
This is not the group set for those putting a lot of power down to the road the chainrings wear fast but overall it’s a great mid-level group.
The one problem with the group is it has 11speed pull ratios in a 10speed confit that is unique to itself. As parts wear out you’ll find that it’s almost cheaper/more cost effective to replace the entire drive train (crank to cassette)
:) No thank you, I prefer to keep it simple and keep my bar end shifters. The adventure should be out on the road and not in the mechanics of the thing.
