this is the best take on apple I've seen in a while, honestly I think going back to basics and focusing on providing simple yet separate solutions for professionals and for consumers should be the way to go, not trying to provide several variations on the same thing with slight differences so difficult to to tell apart, each with a new pencil/keybaord incompatible with the other models that we end up not knowing what each one actually does.
How about: * iPad - for people who needs a cheap and basic iPad for work, school or entertainment, one size, runs iPasOS * iPad Air - for people who want an iPad with more features and the Apple Pencil Pro, 3 sizes (mini, regular and Max), runs iPadOS * iPad Pro - for people who want the ultimate versatile Apple tablet-computer hybrid, 2 sizes, runs MacOS or preferably iPadProOS (which would be 70% MacOS and 30% iPadOS) I think this method would differentiate the iPad Air from the iPad Pro in a way that would make the iPad Pro worth it’s extremely high price compared to the iPad Air BTW, I was so disappointed when the event was over without the iPad mini getting some love 😢

The reason why the previous Apple Pencil doesn't work on the new models is because they needed to redesign the internals for the pencil magnets for the pencil to fit there since they moved the camera to the landscape so it's taking up space. I don't think having the Mac OS on it would make a difference to me. if I can run media consumption apps and social media apps. I am fine. I think Apple missed an opportunity to make the iPad Pro into a media creation device for mobile situations like onset activities that need high mobility and access to tier-one MacOS applications for people in situations where time costs real money and the MacBook's and iMacs can be featured for post-production.
This video was so nice, I had to watch it twice.
Great job, Bridget.
The Ipad air is called Air because it costs a little lighter than the Pro.
Yes, lighter on the wallet :)
Lmao 😅!
And it’s lighter on hardware features.
Agree! I feel like I need to watch each event to understand the product lineups. Let’s go back to basics! So many sku’s of different machines is just wild. I get that people want to have choice but buyers and users should have it a bit easier once they understand their use. It’s almost like Apple has made a whole separate chart for ipads. As an owner of the first ipad pro with face ID, that thing has been so solid and when buying I had no doubt of what to buy, the hardest decision was the capacity I could afford and if I should buy the keyboard which I still haven’t. I bought a standard Mac keyboard instead. Full function, great feel, can be near or far from the ipad.
Such on-point critics I've never seen anyone being even close to touch on. Best tech video I've seen in a while!
I agree with you! I dare anyone at Apple to tell us, what value it gives consumers that an iPad is thin? Who among their customers has been craving a thinner iPad?
My M2 iPad Pro is already thin to the point where I’m afraid it will bend. And not you want to make it even thinner which makes no sense at all. They keep bringing out all these powerful iPads for no reason cause in the end it’s going to do the same thing as the previous one which is already a powerhouse but can’t fully perform at peak performance because there’s no apps that take advantage of it. What Apple needs to focus on is on iPadOS and stop bringing us more powerful hardware just for the sake of it and not give us the performance we need takes advantage of it.
Exactly. The first thing I thought of when they said thinner was the danger of it breaking. Thinner is not synonymous with better. Duh
they are making it for wall-street not customers - big flashy over-powered stuff with messed up compatibility that will make buyers bleed cash for some bragging right
honestly... i bought the new ipad and as much as im excited for it... i dont really understand their strategy or ideology
@@lalaishappyyymany don’t understand their strategy because we don’t know what they’re working already. While we get iPad 2024 they’re already designing iPad 2027.
Haha, “edited on a Mac and an iPad” not just an iPad. I also caught that myself and thought what a joke. Even Apple doesn’t use it strictly for video editing 😂
Apple is also doing cinema quality stuff. If iPad can’t work for your workflow you either have a strange workflow or a skill issue.
Seemed like a pretty honest take on the announced lineup and accessories. To see an outlet that's usually pro Apple feel they're not reading the room presently speaks a lot. Hope they do offer the solutions you suggested for the product tiers and accessory cross compatibility.
I’m glad this video mentioned the ad because that ad really missed the mark.
CNET finally doing some actual reporting, it's been a while. Bridget's best video yet!
The only way to truly make iPad a Mac laptop replacement is to allow it to run Mac OS apps. Just have it switch modes when Smart Keyboard/trackpad attached or whatever to make it work. But let us install full desktop apps for our pro use cases.
They know we want that, they already know how to easily implement that but they are far too greedy for that. Apple prefers to bleed the people dry.
You are absolutely on point. I had to explain the different variations to my partner and it was so complicated.
the apple ipad event was a great advertisement for their competitor. I ordered a s9 ultra right after the event.
You should've waited for the Tab S10 Ultra which will hopefully have a Tandem OLED panel.
@@PSYCHOV3N0MI'm literally waiting for s10 and I really hope it has snapdragon x elite cause imma need a tablet real soon and I feel getting an s9 with a mobile processor won't be the best idea for future proofing. I plan on using whatever tablet I buy for a long time.
A samsung ? cant even imagine.
@@elinx7641 Same, I am using an ipad pro3 12.9 inches daily. Held up well. Love the magic keyboard and also a daily. Working fine but the polyurethane material is peeling off like tissue paper. Held off changing for the longest i could but, this ipad 13 disappointed (mainly agreed with most of the points stated in this video). Was pondering about s10 but not sure if it would be launched 4Q 2024 or even late 2025, so I just ordered the s9. Also my ipad 12.9 just stopped charging using my GAN charger "somehow"....

This is the analysis level that we're missing from journalism in general. Excellent job 👍🏼.
How many pencil options do we have now
For the new ipad's it's two(the new one and the usb-c one)
Only the one you need. People over complicate things for no reason.

Great vid and best one on this event I've seen, well done your honesty earns respect, agree with all your comments
THANK YOU. Ridiculous hype around this essentially spec-bump update right now.
Where is the hype? Not seeing it
You nailed it with the Steve Jobs reference and the solution you gave for the iPads.
Correct!
Good review.
Simplify this way: 1) macOS for pro portables and iOS for the consumer. 2) only two screen sizes for any 3) only two pencils
When people can understand the entire product lines at a glance, they’ll buy more.
You were spot on!
Apple does have a lot of explaining to do at WWDC to justify their decisions.
Not only one less camera but also one less microphone
and smaller battery in 13 inch pro
You add a second USB C Thunderbolt 4 port at the other end and you replace iPadOS with MacOS. That would be game changing. You keep the regular iPads with iPadOS.
Never happening.
🤣🤣🤣
Apple is a publicly traded company that answers to their shareholders. They're not stupid to allow iPads running MacOS to cannibalize their Macbook sales.
They make more money selling two different devices that have 2 completely different target audiences instead of selling 1 device that can do it all.
I would say all M iPads should be running macOS
@@TLSUA-camnope iPadOS could be better and should probably allow Mac apps but macOS itself is not designed for touch and to add it would be stupid and fundamentally un apple
I LOVE how this lady speaks and her content!! It’s engaging, accurate, funny and she is speaking truth. CONGRATS!! 🎊
Love the new M4 iPad Pro but w/ you on Apple simplifying its product lineup. Loved the Steve Jobs reference.
I think you understand the customer correctly, and Apple could learn from you. Thanks for your video, as always.
You nailed it. They all have USB-C now. We want accessories that work up and down the product line. Function keys on ALL keyboards.
"We want accessories that work up and down the product line"
What exactly are you asking for?
USB-C plugs don’t stay “plugged-in” THEY SLIP OUT easily. Who designed them? Horrible! They may transmit a lot of data - fine - but the plug itself - it slips out! Very poorly conceived…
@@stephenschulte3996my USB-C cables stay plugged in just fine. I actually think they grip more than lightning does.
At least for iPad Pro M4 has MacOS when with keyboard, and iPadOS when not with keyboard, it will be perfect
This video is absolutely brilliant in every way I can think of. Cnet, you blew it out of the park.
I absolutely love how Bridget keeps it real. 3,000% agree with everything she said. I have a perfectly good Apple Pencil Gen 2 and was considering buying a new iPad Pro to update my M1 iPad Pro, but I don’t want to have to sell the pencil for no reason other than compatibility.
You are 1000% correct! Selections are a mess. Well done 👍🏽
It feels like long time ago that cnet makes a good quality content. Keep it up!
Bright insight about the current situation at Apple. I also have been following closely Apple since the 80s. And much of the spiritual, humanistic and consumer culture is gone.
I have the same iPad and feel the same as you.
Finally someone who is not shilling or sucking up to apple but willing to call them out on their flaws, you earned my sub.
Finally! An honest review from an actual journalist. Thank you!
I completely agree with you. I was hoping to renew my ipad this year, but nope.
Best take on Apple’s current situation and lack of a real strategy. Cheers!
Good job on this review. I have the M1 12”. Not going to upgrade and even if this one breaks I am going to purchase the older one where my accessories still work. Huge lost opportunity to make an IPad with a huge battery for those of us that use it on the go for work.
Exactly. I’m on a 2020 Pro, and having to repurchase all the accessories is the primary factor in my not upgrading. I’ll look at refurbished M series models if anything.
Loved your video Bridget. Tablets will never replace Pro laptops nor desktops, we need those larger screens to work on everyday. I always supported Steve Jobs’ Apple when new products were launched, so I would run to buy them. But as I watched the last iPad presentation all I thought was to get rid of my iPad and its accessories, and not buy another one again.😊
Reasonable, cogent analysis with no Apple polishing. Respect.
So glad I escaped the cult of Apple many years ago.
AGREE! AND WHERE’S THE NEW IPAD MINI AT!? WAS HOPING FOR A PRO MODEL, BUT DAYUM, EVEN A NORMAL MINI DIDN’T GET ANY UPDATES🙂↔️
Nobody would actually buy that, like the mini iPhones what were frequently asked for but hardly actually bought. They won’t make that mistake again.
Nobody’s going to buy the Mini when it costs more than a larger basic iPad, and iPhones keep getting bigger anyway.
Once I heard, “do a barrel roll” auto liked 😂
I’m glad this video points out the loss of the ultra-wide camera on the iPad Pro. Not inclined to trade in my M2 Pro for the M4, unless I’m blown away by the OLED screen, which I have yet to see.
You’re spot on. I’m still using my iPad pro from 2018, would love to upgrade because of that oled screen, it looks amazing. But the price tag 😢
You are totally correct!! For now its too confusing…
What’s the confusion? They simplify the line up. 3 iPads. The entry level. The mid level and the high level.
Apple has truly been beyond disappointing these last few years…
Not at all. They have the best products. I’ve switched from Samsung and it was the best decision.
@@dominic7012 Look I’m an Apple user from my Mac Studio to my iPhone 15 Pro Max and Watch Ultra. However the iPad lineup is beyond bloated and completely unnecessary, not to mention the lack of actual “pro” features and options on the iPad Pros. I have my iPad Pro M1 and it’s honesty the most useless device I own. I can do basic things on it, but as far as video encoding, real raw image editing and Rust Development… it falls severely short for actual true pro needs. Then when you add in the compatibility nightmares with hardware accessories, it’s absolutely terrible for the average person.
man that ipad ad crushing so many things was not good.
It was a copy of what LG did years ago, and no one complained. It is more a sign of the times where people take offence at anything and everything; where art is no longer acceptable to push boundaries; it must conform to the demands of the few.
It was just CGI, not real.
IDK..I just got this iPad Pro 11 a few months ago. It had a few bugs, coming from an Android tablet.
But I got them worked out. Now I’m very pleased with it.
It’s a powerful piece of technology! The Qlone LiDAR Scanner is great! I can print out anything I can scan in 3d.
Thumbs up for Apple👍👍!
this is the best take on apple I've seen in a while, honestly I think going back to basics and focusing on providing simple yet separate solutions for professionals and for consumers should be the way to go, not trying to provide several variations on the same thing with slight differences so difficult to to tell apart, each with a new pencil/keybaord incompatible with the other models that we end up not knowing what each one actually does.
How about:
* iPad - for people who needs a cheap and basic iPad for work, school or entertainment, one size, runs iPasOS
* iPad Air - for people who want an iPad with more features and the Apple Pencil Pro, 3 sizes (mini, regular and Max), runs iPadOS
* iPad Pro - for people who want the ultimate versatile Apple tablet-computer hybrid, 2 sizes, runs MacOS or preferably iPadProOS (which would be 70% MacOS and 30% iPadOS)
I think this method would differentiate the iPad Air from the iPad Pro in a way that would make the iPad Pro worth it’s extremely high price compared to the iPad Air
BTW, I was so disappointed when the event was over without the iPad mini getting some love 😢
Perfect overview of the announcement.
WTF is she talking about? Apple made Siri sassy FROM THE START. In fact, they programed it with a bunch of supposedly funny and sassy responses when it was unveiled.
Sure, the GPT one is more advanced but to claim that Apple might be starting to move in that direction is nonsense.
This is so spot on. I was so keen on buying the new iPad air. I use it for work but don’t need “pro features” mainly email word processing and video calls. The new camera placement was a big yay for me… till I realised my 2nd gen pencil which still looks BRAND NEW was not compatible. Yeah no. I’ll keep my current iPad till it dies.
Nailed it! I want to upgrade my iPad, but I am confused about what model to buy. The product launch only further muddied things for me. I don’t want to spend for the sake of spending. But, I also don’t want to buy a product that will be obsolete next year. I don’t know where the iPad is headed, so I can’t really make an educated buying decision today.
No excuse for not coming to grips with your needs. Until you do, at least get an Air.
@@FrankTerranova1 I disagree. If the Pro is actually going to be closer to a MacBook in a month or two (because of software upgrades), I would have bought an Air and been dissatisfied soon after. I want to know what I am buying to make a good purchase. This was not clearly laid out in this release. To further explain, I am a Pro user who wants more full laptop functionality.
What they should have done was put the M4 chip on the MacBook instead of the iPad
Sa sers a rien c’est juste la m4 classique
they will
it makes sense but the ipad needed that new M4 chip for marketing even though the ipad can barely even use more than half its power

Thanks for the content.
OMG She is SO GOOD! IT was a pleasure to listen to her talk about Apple's problems right now. They need to simplify, fast.
NO.... They dont care about you... They only care about your wallet..
your Apple wallet 😎
They’re not telling you to buy a new device. And most smart people know apple devices last way longer that others and upgrade 2 to 3 years at the time. Just upgrade my iPhone 12. Nothing wrong with the phone. I just wanted the new spatial video option. You buy when you need it.
Then why do they have competitive prices and the longest software support in the industry?
How bout iPad Studio that runs macOS ....
Exactly.
You’re completely talking nonsense. You want MacOS on the go? Buy a MacBook. It ain’t coming to iPads.
its you who is talking idiocy. it has an m4 for god sake, its more than capable for running a full fledge os, not some gimped glorified browser.
@@p5rsona having an M4 chip doesn’t mean anything. If MacOS on an iPad was possible, you’d get it by now.
At some point who knows when MacOS will support touch and when that day comes then we will see it on a iPad oh I mean a giant iPhone
The reason why the previous Apple Pencil doesn't work on the new models is because they needed to redesign the internals for the pencil magnets for the pencil to fit there since they moved the camera to the landscape so it's taking up space. I feel like even thought some of the things you said might be right, we need to remember that designing products that fit everyone's needs is not as easy as UA-camrs may think it is, design is such a challenge and Apple has some of the best designers in the world, so they probably have thought about all of this but haven't found a "one size fits all" solution yet.
Maybe the pencil magnets on the top of the portrait iPad and that’s all! But Apple want to sell the same thing twice.
If they were so concerned with that, they could easily make an adapter.
Haven’t heard such a good review in many years. Great job Bridget.
Yeah, the point is it still isn’t a MacBook. I’m waiting for a MacOS/iPadOS hybrid that I have been waiting for since M1. I will continue with my iPad Pro 2018 until then.
That's not happening.
🤣🤣🤣

Has anyone EVER seen or heard an Apple customer clamor for thinner devices? I haven’t, and I’ve been working with Apple products for over forty years.
40 years of pure ignorance. Their whole shtick is thinner, minimalist devices. No intel/gpu stickers on their laptops. White, grey, and black is the most common colors. Part of the reason why they removed the headphone jack is because they wanted to make the devices thinner. He doesn't work at Apple anymore but ever heard of Jony Ive? If you knew, you would know that every year the Apple's devices have gotten thinner and thinner under his design philosophy
