Pitfall of Pull-Type Pickers, Opening a Field By Hand

  • This field has open borders, so the end rows are easy to take off, but the field stair steps twice along the one edge, so to save driving , we hand pick two rows at the first reduction. I wish there was more picker footage, but it have been picking mostly after dark.

That was Dad's reason for being so happy with the '48 M and 2ME picker he bought in 1961. It was a PITA to mount and dismount but he loved that he could choose any 2 rows to pick and not have to hand pick down rows. Love your videos.

I loved this video ! It sure brings back a lot of great memories as kid helping my grandpa . I want say he had 15 different wagons but only gravity wagon . He would pay me to shovel out the wagons . All his corn went to feed hogs . He raised them on a couple hundred acres of woods and pasture . One of these days i'm going to get a picker and plant out my back field in O.P. corn to show my kids what I did as kid . I want a New Idea mounted picker on a Farmall M like he had .

I remember when I was younger having to cut two rows (stalk and all) around the outside of fields to make room for the tractor towing the chopper. And if that wasn't bad enough, we had to pick the stalks back up and feed them into the chopper. Fun times LOL

You must be on narrow rows. A old tricycle front end tractor would go right over the corn with minimum damage. We could open a field than just come back over it from the oppiste way and the picker could pick up the down corn easy.

Very Nice!! Most people would have just ran over those starter rows. I know it's expensive. But I would like to see you get the A/C and Heat back going on your 1086. I purchased a vacuum pump and gauges few years ago. With the help of the net and a few books. Learned to work on my own. Couple of tricks. If you don't know. 1) dust off, or similar. Stuff that used to blow the dust off computer eq. Is great freon. It's actually 152a refrigerant. Sold at any Walmart. 2) plan ole lacquer thinner. Works great to flush out the lines. Evaporator and condenser. You might be super great at A/C work. I'm just trying to spark your interest. If not. Keep you comfortable. Those long days and nights. I know how it is.😆

My one armed grandpa and I would go out with machetes and open up six rows by hand so he could then get his 8N and single row "binder" down the opening. We would bundle up the hand cut ones with twine and stack them on end in the middle. Then add (me) the bundles the binder would spill out and add to the stacks. Then we got to stack and haul them back to the barn.
For fun we would go the the neighbors farm where he had a picker like yours and "glean" the field of ears that fell through. Nothing like dragging a 5 gallon bucket through the mud and cold in Kansas in November when you're 12. ;)

I think I'd just run over two rows or plant a lane in millet and vetch for the wildlife. Having a border of something the deer like better and will follow off the field might actually yield more corn. It certainly would where I live.

I was going to ask why you don’t skip a planter pass around the outside to get you away from hand-opening the field.... I skip a pass around every field so I can mow around it a couple times a season with the batwing... usually get crap yield next the the creekbanks and treelines anyway plus it makes turning the sprayer and combine around that much easier..... but I see where you said its a 4 acre field so if you skip a pass you’re losing a lot I suppose

This is different type of corn harvesting. A picker removed the ear of corn along with cleaning all plant material but the corn is not shelled. Meaning it is still intact w/the Cobb. The combine adds a step to this n shells the corn meaning to remove it from the Cobb as well. The main reason for all of this is generally the farm harvesting has animals and minus the explanation it is far better for the animals nutritional value to pick the corn as opposed to shelling for feed. This is why in-depth explaining is not being done here simply do to the many reasons to leave the feed in the state it is in or needs to be in for acheived goal. If confused let me know
