I wasn't aware this was forbidden in any way. I have seen this method used on smaller trees quite a few times, never seen Bonsai made from trees as large as these though.
This tree is already more than half a century old. If you use a bonsai wire, the branches will get thicker, so you need to repeat dozens of times attach it , remove it, attach it, remove it, and so on.
This is not a "secret" technique, nor is it the first time ever shown. Maybe first time shown on big garden trees, but has been in bonsai magazines since the 80s.
That is amazing, I have only seen that done to small trees in the UK. But since we do not have a good climate we can not do it to larger trees like that
@@Stettafire I have seen on youtube a few years ago someone trying something similar in the UK on native trees and they all slowly died, they also did smaller trees that had been kept in a pollytunnel and they lived
She says its a unique technique but what she means its that it is unique to do it with big trees. They split branches on bonsai and have been doing it for a thousand years.

That's a good idea!

Well I would not go quite that far. They are AMONG the best but there is some great Arborists in the USA, Europe and the UK as well.

Why not use bonsai wire when the branches are young to form them?
This tree is already more than half a century old. If you use a bonsai wire, the branches will get thicker, so you need to repeat dozens of times attach it , remove it, attach it, remove it, and so on.
And if you use a bonsai wire for a young tree, the branches will not grow thick well.

Most technique for large garden trees is derived from the bonsai technique. Both are closely related.

That is amazing, I have only seen that done to small trees in the UK. But since we do not have a good climate we can not do it to larger trees like that
We have a great climate, but for our native species. Only reason folk struggle is they import things that aren't supposed to live here
@@Stettafire I have seen on youtube a few years ago someone trying something similar in the UK on native trees and they all slowly died, they also did smaller trees that had been kept in a pollytunnel and they lived

Yes exactly! It's looks like same but quite different.
Basically Tree torture
Nothing in Japan may be attempted without a 5-10 year apprenticeship
