I'm already a very modest Patron, but I'm deeply moved by Joseph's powerful approach which is bringing laughter, imagery, and motivation to up my donation!
Loved this so much 🥰 I have a selkie soul connection and when I get ‘husked’ by my work, my land commitments etc I will happen upon a seal in my waking life (yes a real one 🤣). Two Saturday’s ago I found my seal just loving life floating around the rocks with its flipper up 🤣 The seal brings the blessing and the lesson 🪄🙏 Also, the selkie doesn’t abandon her children, they too have their skins, will find them and will return to their kin ❤️❤️❤️
We can't force the Soul to serve us. It is a higher self. The evolving Soul or deepest Individuality is the Center that Jung identified. It is the Luna aspect of the Being. It is experienced as a dark Abyss at the beginning of the process but after decades of inner work, it becomes a deep, delicious nourishing inner Source of pure comfort, delight, and expanded consciousness. It radiates bliss and warmth. Ego surrenders and experiences the Death on the Cross and after this harrowing ordeal, becomes integrated with Soul. Then the Solar aspect of Spirit comes forward and Soul surrenders to Spirit as Higher Self. The marriage between Sol and Luna is the Philosopher's Stone...a fully integrated and conscious Self. This is high stage of spirituality that few have actually reached. This is how it all unfolded in my awakening/Individuation process. Others may have their own experience and perception. Ego+Soul+Spirit = Divine Self. Peace
This conversation was water to the soul 🌊🌺❤ Thank you exploring depths that open vistas of understanding and are healing in their own way 🙏 Fav part "The Selkie is it's own order of being" - Joseph
This was an amazing discussion and it really spoke to me. I recently watched the movie " The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart" and this story of the Selkie played a part in this movie. I'm sure the book goes into so much more detail than what was presented in the movie, but hearing your perspectives... It really makes the movie ( and the book ) come alive. Thanks you 🙏
This conversation kept me on the edge of my seat. Loved it! Thank you, Lisa, Deb and Joseph. The underlying theme of this many dimensional view of the tales, as I understand it, is yearning for wholeness, encounter with the soul and then transformation or the lack of it. And everything that makes these difficult and precious at the same time. One of my lifelong friends and I first read about the Selkie in Lisa's exquisitely beautiful book, Motherhood: Finding and Facing Yourself. I remember talking about it for hours over the phone, as we live hundreds of kilometres apart from each other.
Well remembered! Although 2014 seems like 5 minutes ago to me! I'm also a pianist and performer. Btw, common misuse of comma in your sentence there. Not needed at all and is only breaking up the sentence incorrectly.
I’m a happy student of your Dream School where I met a friend for life (I hope with all my heart) actually we thought about you Joseph last weekend when we met to work on our dreams. Today my life is taking a different turn, and I’m fine, I’m used to changes. We’ll see where my energy takes me. 1:08:53 Joseph your reaction made my day. How lovely! Keep on bringing the good humour 🎉. Love, love, love 💗.
I'm going to guess that the answer is NOOOOOOOOO! Step AWAY from the EGO and Put the CONTROL DOWN! 😂😂 That's my current approach for sure is to be very much humbled and entreating of my soul and to build relationship with it, because in some way it not just me... Or mot just an aspect of conscious ego based me anyway... It is the (an) "other" inside, of whom I do not (fully) know. Happy to see things from another angle as well - guided by you guys, I've tremendous admiration for your work! Listening now to Joseph's early analogy, nice improve!! 😂😂😂
Hello and thanks for (another) interesting analysis and discussion. I would like to add that in both fairy tales, in the one about the Selkie and the one about the Swan "princess", there is a moral rhetoric about the motherhood of both. In the case of the Selkie, she gives birth to seven children. This means that when she returns to her right element, to the sea, to freedom, the oldest children are old enough to take care of their youngest siblings. The swan princess/wife, on the other hand, waits until their only child is in their teens before returning to her flock of swans, and the child, now a teenager, can take care of itself. In none of the fairy tales do the mothers abandon a lonely little child who cannot take care of itself, with only the hard working father to take care of the infant. None of them are irresponsible in that way. The story of the Selkie is about her, after fulfilling her role as a mother and wife, returning to her tribe, where she apparently meets a man (another seal/Selkie) of her own kind, who sees her for what and who she really is (= the elixir), as a woman. In the case of the Swan Princess, the reward does not consist in regained freedom as with the Selkie, but in the man seeing her scars from all the needlework and thereby acknowledging her demanding work as a wife in the home. She receives the recognition, the thanks and the reward (= the elixir) she has waited for and deserved, and then, as I understand it, returns to her husband. Greetings from Peter
love these talks! quick technical request: y'all are so soft-spoken, is there a way to bump the recording volume up louder? hard to hear if theres a fan going or water running, ty!
There once was a protean seal, whose soul some rascal did steal, enduring much tedium, she stole back that medium, a just way to seal the deal (sometimes you must rob the robber) thanks!
Am I to understand that marriage is the ultimate fulfillment for all women? My dad told me marriage is a trap for women. I've made my way to elderhood preserving my authenticity in a society that judges me as "less than" because I didn't choose the traditional path. Yet in many ways my life is a fulfillment my female ancestors could only dream about, and would have died for! May I assume your understanding is sufficiently nuanced to accommodate this alternative lifestyle?
Thank you so much for your extraordinary podcast. I'm wondering if you could please write the name of the book Lisa read from. I've been looking on Amazon and haven't found it :) Much appreciated! :)
Extremely interesting. But I am surprised, in the story of the swan maiden turned into a human wife, finally flees back to her swan family, when the husband identifies her by the callouses on her hands, that you all think this is something good about her psychic development. The callouses seem to me to be to be signs of her forced servitude and she is then dragged back against her will by order of male authority, the king, giving her back to the husband who somehow abducted her by virtue of stealing her feathers. I don’t see anything good about it at all!! Anyway, the dream discussion was great. :)
Such a crazy good episode. All the varying interpretations. It almost felt like the third story was a synthesis of the two opposite stories. Mother as choosing domestic life vs. mother as having girlhood stolen, not chosen. The last story is about witnessing the unconscious creative feminine as a living thing, which is to be seen as a lens for a way of living. Jung's third thing. Not as a way to say this thing that happens to the Selkie could have been avoided or done differently. But that we are a synthesis of the choices that we make both consciously or unconsciously. Beautifully evocative. 🙏🦭🌊🦭🌊🦭🌊🌊

I think the seven children in the tale is a metaphor for the seven chakras and awakening. The selkie wife brings the gift of consciousness.
Such an amazing way to enjoy my day, a cup of tea, your podcast and a sunny day. ❤❤❤

"Take your flipper... " 😂😂😂
The artist musician Tori Amos, has a beautiful song called "Selkie" ...which is about the folktale. Its worth a listen.

Joseph’s patron entreaty is hilarious
There’s a lovely movie called the secret of roan innish, highly recommended, a selkie story 🌊🌅🐋🧜♀️

Loved the Selkie-themed call for Patrons! 😂

Nothing to add. Again a brilliant presentation of the three of you.

Fascinating! I am wondering about the present day focus on skin? Thank you all for what you do.

Fantastic presentation!
Could we turn Joseph’s mic level up? I have to turn the volume up whenever he speaks and then back down when Deb or Lisa speak.
That's a joyous, honest hypno-hustle, if ever I heard one 😂 just for that, I may sign up 😊
