The Saint was a great footballer, a great analyzer and a great presenter.

I think I will remember this more for the post match analysis than the actual game itself. I would also like to see Mike Channon’s confrontation with Brian Clough the day after England’s goalless draw with Morocco during the same tournament.

I remember The Saint being absolutely livid on Saint & Greavsie after the programme aired previously unbroadcast footage of him going nuts during the Uruguay game. I thought he was gonna belt Greaves!

Worst performance he had ever seen from a Scottish side. It must have been bad.

Yes, that was shown on Gloria Hunniford’d ‘Sunday Sunday’ show in 1986 when she interviewed the Saint and Greavsie.

Uruguay were animals but we should of won, Ian Saint John reflected how all of Scotland felt back then, Maybe the Scottish players were scared of getting injured against Uruguay.

@Esc. Pablo Castro Alario well Scotland were the first of the home nations to lift the Sir Stanley Rous Cup in 1985,, Go and check wiki about the significance of the man and that trophy.
I'm sure that will wipe the smile off your'e face.

@@Justdisco2 In 1954 Uruguay beaten Scotland 7 x 0 in World Cup, no rival at all at that time, even England, 4 x2..was beaten by Uruguay .It is a fantasy still thinking in 1986 match
against Uruguay, with red card of french referee at the beginning, Uruguay was currently the champion of America. Uruguay won the olympics and the world champions when Scotland did wanted to play outside Britain...The great chance of Scotland was in 1990 with Costa Rica and Sweden in Genoa.

Though not included in this clip, during the game ITV had a camera trained on Ian St John and at the end showed his anger and frustration at Scotland's performance as the game progressed.
Could have been Scotland v Argentina in the next round, and a potential quarter-final against England!
Just for good measure, Uruguay applied the coup de grace to Scotland's World Cup hopes 4 years later by scoring an injury-time winner against South Korea.

Jon Cole didn’t help that Uruguay came to kick Scotland off the park. Some of the challenges were appalling. Scotland were the masters of their own downfall though by not playing like they did in the previous 2 games.

distantvoices that was the most annoying thing about molby. You knew he could do it, but it was like he only played to his potential when he could be bothered. Look at his goal against us in the league cup game at anfield in late 85. Absolutely brilliant. I think his weight was a problem as well because he was a big guy and didn’t have the pace. But with his passing ability he didn’t need to beat people. I remember in 89 or 90 he was supposed to be going to Barcelona but it didn’t happen for some reason. I think the Spanish game would have suited him better actually.

Hannibal Barca Scotland played quite well against Denmark as well, certainly better than they did against Uruguay.

    • @MrJonno85
      @MrJonno85 5 років тому +5

@@mrkipling2201 The Uruguay game was always going to different from the other two, even before the sending-off. I remember in the build-up to the game the footballing world was focusing on the dirty side of the Uruguayans because of the sending-off in their game against Denmark.
Arguably the early dismissal worked against Scotland as it gave Uruguay the excuse to park the bus, and for a team skilled in defending and only requiring a draw to progress, this was bad news for a team like Scotland who perhaps prefer to be the underdogs in a contest.

That Uruguay squad had amazing players, who simply couldn't play as a team. In addition, they were badly harassed by the media.
In this particular game, ten Uruguayans had to cope with 11 angry Scottish + referee Joel Quiniou, for 89 minutes...!!! Shame on Fifa.

I did read a story that there was so much tension between the players based in Scotland and those playing in England that the former refused to speak to their Southern-based team mates. I am not sure what year this was but given how small-minded the sweaties are, it's quite believable.
