JLR products are an embarrassment here in the UK. Horror stories of engines grenading just out of warranty and JLR refusing to take any responsibility. People buying cars for £40k+ minimum and then being told a complete new engine required after only, say, 35k miles and 3.5 years. £15k+. The entire company deserves to go down the toilet.
I drove a 93 Nissan truck for twenty two years sold it to a friend and he is driving it to work today and bought a 2006 Altima sold it to the same friend in 2014 and his mother is driving the car today 03/08/24. Both vehicles were trouble free and as reliable as the three Honda's and Toyota I drive today.
They are junk! I own a 2014 maxima with 99000 miles on it . The CVT transmission was just replaced and then all the cam lobes wore off the camshafts despite keeping fresh clean synthetic oil in the crankcase. The motor was also replaced. 🔥 Nissans are now junk don't buy one.
I can't complain much about my 2012 Sentra. 188,000 miles and my daily driver. Only major issue was replacing the blower motor ( took me about 3 hours) other that that just typical car issues.
I bought a low mileage 06 Altima for my son as his first car in 2012. He drove it like was a rental, got in a couple fender benders, but the car kept ticking. By the time he got rid of it it had over 170K on it. The thing was a tank. Weird CVT sounds, but it never broke down.
Loved this generation of the Altima. It was also the last generation that used a traditional automatic before they began putting CVTs in their vehicles. The SE-R was a fun car to drive.
Lucky guy I just donated our 2006 Nissan Altima. Many problems catalytic converter, starter , battery problems. Transmission started to give trouble less than 90,000 miles. 3:00 3:01
Going on 121K on my 2015 Sentra, never seen the check engine light come on except for pne time in 2019 when I put bad gas in it. My daily driver after all these years, not a single skip with the start, engine, transmission. Excellent car.
Many auto manufacturers have significantly gone downhill in quality . If you can , buy a pre 2002 Nissan. Had four Nissans in my lifetime. All exceeded 200,000 miles . Just sold my 93 Altima , 307,000 miles . Still ran strong .
I’ve decided to choose the 2018-19 Odyssey over same years Sienna. I’ve been watching a Toyota mechanic talk about the most common issues with the Sienna’s 3.5L engine. I owned a 2009 Odyssey with 266,000 miles on it didn’t have many issues. It did start burning some oil at 200,000 miles about a half a quart between 3000 mile oil changes.. I wouldn’t have an occasional engine code with misfiring on those back three cylinders that burned a little oil, but other than that the van was very solid. From what I hear Honda has improved their rings on their pistons.
That was on the Honda 1.5 turbo four. My 2022 has the naturally aspirated 2.0 and I love it. I do wish it had a stick, but since I bought it for long distant driving, it's not a big deal.
Hey, I drove nissans all my life and I don't know whether I am lucky, but I never had major problems with them. I drove a 96 maxima, 2015 quest, curently we drive 2017 xtrail (diesel) and a 88 datsun bluebird also diesel. No problems whatsoever.
When I worked as sales representative, the most common vehicle stranded on the road was the Nissan Altima by far, the second one Nissan Sentra, third one Chevy Cruze.
I’ve owned two Nissan pathfinders a 2005 and a 2016 2005 got up to 16500 miles and my 2016 has 182000 miles they had their share of problems but ran great I just had my transmission replace with a new one on my 2016 plus some other stuff done and it runs great
"Had there share of problems" and just "replaced the transmission" Exactly just buy a Honda or Toyota and not have issues. My 2014 corolla is at 14000 right now with zero issues. Bought it used with 44000.
@Angel-ms9ou guy I replied to implied that nissians are fine. While at the same time he's replaced a transmission and has had problems with his nissians. which is the opposite of what he's implying.
Hey Scotty I have a 2012 Nissan Versa that started running weird with codes. After inspection found that squirrels had eaten on the wire harness in engine compartment . Repaired harness and now works fine.
My Chevrolet Cavalier would once or twice a month throw up a bunch of random guage lights along with a dimming of the headlights. The fuel guage would even quit working when this anomaly happened. Thought it may be a bad ECM as well? Come to find out it was a bad ground coming from the battery. I never realized a bad ground would cause all those issues.
I work for a car rental agency. We have LOTS of Altima’s, and Rogue’s and Rogue Sports and Versa’s and Maxima’s. For the most part we have zero issues with them. The Titan’s we have had some issues but nothing major. Couple weeks back we had a ‘23 Rogue showing a cylinder misfire which was very surprising. If the price was right I’d own a Nissan but with car prices these days NO price is right.
My god with Nissan....last year after changing out my daily 2015 Honda fit with 180kmiles with a used 2019 fit CVT transmission I was in the market for a brand new Nissan 400z sports car. Then a little voice in my head said "Ask Scotty Kilmer for an advice"...I went ahead and bought a brand new 2023 Toyota LE corolla, cheaper and paid it off last week...couldn't be much happier....
I have a 2020 Nissan Altima with 88k miles no problems other than regualr maintenance and needing a battery replaced but other than its been good to me and I shall be good to it👍💯🔥
Just reset the ECM. Disconnect battery. Then cross the disconnected cables together for a few hours. Turn lights on to drain any power from the system. Reconnect and presto! Just be sure not to start it right away. Turnkey to on. wait a minute. Then start it and run a few miles. ECM needs to re-learn.
I have a 2014 Nissan Maxima S with 152,000 miles so far. I bought it in 2020 with 67,000 miles on the odometer. I must admit, I've had a few problems with the CVT such as slipping and slow acceleration. I've changed the CVT fluid twice since I've owned the Maxima and the CVT is still going strong for now. Only other problem is the display screen pixels are sometimes lined out. I do all of own maintenance which probably is the main reason my Maxima is performing well.
I owned a Nissan Stanza. It was wonderful, until my family member drove it one day and got into a wreck, not their fault but I still cried over the loss of my Stanza 😢😥😰😖😣😩😫😵
Fantastic car I had a Datsun 1600, great fun great memories, a Datsun fair lady would of been a perfect fit as such a beautiful looking car , cheers from Aus
Nissan is japans Chrysler. The cars are horrible but the trucks are not bad. I have the 2019 nv 1500 it’s been a good van . No issues over 100k and it gets driven hard. It’s well maintained.
As a mechanic I can say I have found Chrysler products to be far better than some criticism suggests. GM is the biggest offender where domestic cars, especially Cadillac is concerned. The monstrosities they have foisted upon the public are just awful. The contrast between the Ford panther platform ( Town Car, Crown Victoria, ) and such wonders as the Northstar system is shocking.
The $100 bet: I'll bet you that the problem is a wire shorting out only when it's cold! They make the wiring looms so short these days, and don't run them through grommets. So when it gets cold and the copper shrinks, the wires pull themselves against the holes in the metal they normally don't touch stripping the insulation and eventually shorting out. But... only when the temps are below 30 degrees. I had this happen on a 1993 Dodge Intrepid where the interior lights would come on by themselves below 30 degrees and kill the battery. The wire was stripped and shorting where it passed into the trunk.
Years ago had similar condition on a Mitsubishi Colt autobox (robotic manual box), All components lost communications intermittently, like all including the dash, Engine-ecu to the gearbox etc. The problem: The little unimportant clock/temperature display on the dash(!). the dealer got a used one from a salvage yard, 100 bucks for a "new" used one in and problem fixed, including labor. (200 in todays money). A rare case the official dealer was by far cheapest. All other garages wanted to replace about everything except that clock panel and thus NOT fix the problem after several thousands of euro's.
I owned the 2001 Nissan 240SX and oh was she pretty. Not one problem in 12 years. Those were the days! I remember I paid $14,300 new. Those were the days!
Back in 2006 bought a Toyota Camry; wife wanted a 2006 Altima but I test drive both and could tell the obvious quality of the Toyota versus the Nissan (fit/finish, ride, intuitive controls, etc). We eventually sold the Camry a few years later before moving out of the country (only to return a few years later). Now 18 years later I still see so many ‘06 Camrys still on the road. Altimas?…none. Nuff said.
The 2020+ nissan sedans don't seem to have many transmission problems at all. Compare that to the gm 6 and 8 speeds from 2019+ and all their problems already and I'd say these new cvt transmissions are better made than the horrendous last gen nissan sedan transmissions. Like mentioned here though. These new nissans have lots of electrical issues. My wife has a 2021 sentra so hopefully these will be know as reliable cars.
Scotty, I really enjoy your videos. I’m 76 yeas old and my father was a diesel mechanic for over-the-road 18 wheelers. He also had a side business as a regular auto mechanic with his own shop. I remember him telling me when I started driving if you keep the oil changed, new oil filter, and lube like you should (otherwise properly maintain your car) your car will last “forever”. Of course, this was way before we added all the electronic crap to vehicles. However, I do have a 2007 Nissan Quest van my wife bought new that now has 247,000 miles. Runs like a top but of course I have always followed my father’s advice. It’s just now beginning to have some minor issues….all related to the crappy electronics.
My '21 Frontier that's rated for 19/22 mpg...just did 34 mpg for 2 months of TOWN DRIVING. I haven't had a single issue with it. I love my Nissan Frontier. LOL
@@randomspirit you don’t have to email me,,,I owned a frontier. You’ll never make me believe you got that mileage, least of all in town which is worse than highway driving….sorry, not trying to make you mad or disrespect you, but there just isn’t no way.
It's going to explode any day now! Any day.....just wait for it....hold your breathe....wait....it's coming, there's no doubt about it...surely at any day now... Yea, Nissans can be super solid and just as good if not better than what these goobers want to stroke themselves to. I've owned a few different Nissans and they've been some of the best vehicles I ever could've had. I've also seen plenty of Toyotas putter out, but don't tell that to all the pretty boys that just follow the crowd of what's "popular".
I bought a Sentra because every foreign country i visited, the taxis were Sentras. I bought a Sentra for my son and it was a tank. He abused it but it kept running. I take care of mine. ‘17 Sentra, 65K.
I was expecting to see something like an Equinox or some other small GM POS. Nissan, they are not actually that bad besides the CVT. The 3.5 v6 is a very solid engine.
It's really hard sometimes working on people's vehicles. The vehicles seem to have ghosts in them or something, because they act funny at times... Like they have a mind of their own. A lot if times, a customer is complaining about a problem, and i drive the vehicle, and find zero wrong with the vehicle. They go driving, and it acts up. Weird.
'Jatco' is Nissan's company: Jatco makes Normal AT's, DCT's, CVT's and automated manual transmissions. It's always best to research a vehicle before u buy it 🤷
@@mrgarrison3516 Jatco is Nissan's supplier of transmissions. They also supply for Mazda, Subaru, Isuzu, Suzuki, BMW, Volkswagen, MG Rover Group and Land Rover. I don't know why none of them have reliability issues if they are using Jatco designed and manufactured transmissions.
Fordtechmakuloco had a 2017 f150 that had multiple modules down. The fault was tail light assemblies holding water and corrosion in the elec connection to them screwing up over 30 modules. He replaced the tail light assemblies, wiring harness that runs between them. Parts were $5600.
I still like Nissan cars.😅They’re the only ones that have cars at the dealerships without the insane markups. And their cars are cheap and great value. They’re built better nowadays too.
My 09 rogue gets me around town. I dont drive on hwy. Kind of loud, not alot of power. So far no problems pd 6.5k 4 yrs ago so ive gotten my $ worth out of it. Hope it holds up a couple of more yrs.
Best car right now. I’m thinking is Mazda CX 90. Actually watching them and thinking about buying one. Step son just totaled a Altima. Car did great in an accident. He walked away. T bone some at 55. Other driver had to be cut out. My son got out of his car and walked around. Sore and shaken up pretty good. But the car did I great.
My 23 Nissan Kicks did something similar and I never even got the car out of park in my driveway. I got it started and couldn't get it shifted before what I assume was the ECM lost communication and I got a malfunction message and another message telling me that the key wasn't detected even though I had it in my pocket. It was below 0 outside, the coldest day I've seen in memory and likely ever will see while owning this car. I was able to get the car shut off but not out of accessory mode for some reason. I let the battery drain overnight and it warmed up to like 5F. I was able to jump start the Kicks using my jumper pack and it started up and has been reliable ever since. Called the dealer and they blamed it on the cold.
Is the ECM in the engine compartment? If so you may need to leave a 100 watt incandescent bulb in a trouble light type fixture turned on under the car/ECM on winter nights? Perhaps a car cover over the whole car to keep that heat in? Check with that dealer if there is a reprogramming of the ECU for that problem later this year?
Cop pulls you over for speeding : Me: hey man I was just trying to get the computer to trip a code, I was testing to see what the computer issue is.. I have to speed
Nissans are great vehicles extremely reliable and their electronics rarely fail. this guy obviously works for Toyota. He actually said once that Jatco makes terrible FWD automatic transmissions. Avery mechanic knows their automatics are the most reliable in the industry. 307k on my maxima auto no problems and thousands of others just like me online
I still drive a 2013 Nissan Altima. Knock on wood the vehicle is at 170k miles and never been in the shop. I only use it on the highway though back and forth to work
The problems with Nissans and those cvt transmissions is simple. The hood races them and those cvts aren't designed like a standard transmission. Those bands will go pop or loosen from all the tension put on it.
I have owned 4 Nissans and also bought 2 for my daughter and have always said these cars are perfect for about 5 years then everything falls apart. If you buy a 4 or 5 year old Nissan get ready to dish out a lot of money. The only way to deal with this issue is get that 4 or 5 year old Nissan for free !
Water ingress to one of the gang connectors on that exposed ECM is my guess. I'd disconnect them and pack with dielectric compound or a moisture displacing spray product. These sorts of things happen on airliners a lot, and a much of the time you just reset and go, for problems that appear and don't come back for many hours after being cleared.
Over Engineering is the Main Problem with New Cars, if they are in Warranty and these Electronics go out, you might be OK, if out of Warranty, expect to Empty your Pocketbook.
Come on man, we all know that just about all English, most French, and all Italian cars are only good for about 8 K before the first problems show up. Soon to be added to that list are Ford, GM, Chrysler.
It could be RF Radio Interference that comes from a strong radio station antenna when you drive by... I once affected my cars ECM by transmitting a radio signal from my ham radio equipment mounted inside the car..The car would actually slow down every time i pushed the microphone button.
I don't know why people buy Nissan car's for they know it's going to have problems with it and break down as well and people should listen to Scotty to avoid which car's that have problems and which car's to own for a long time.

Yea, that was made before renault brand took over Nissan.
I understand where you're coming from Scotty sometime electronic problems really suck!
😮
On this note, a Lada certainly would be easy to fix🙂
Going on 121K on my 2015 Sentra, never seen the check engine light come on except for pne time in 2019 when I put bad gas in it. My daily driver after all these years, not a single skip with the start, engine, transmission. Excellent car.
how often do you change your transmission fluid?
Time for that Nissan to move to a warmer climate, that should fix it! We're always learning stuff from Scotty.
My 2010 frontier is a great little work truck 280000 miles still runs like new . 2.5 liter
Scotty you probably shouldn’t kick the front of the customers car 😆
I've got a manual 2015 Nissan Pulsar and it's great.
Not usa for sure not a model offered here
In the US there used to be the Nissan Pulsar in the 90s, I believe
Maybe USA Nissan but rest of the world are ok
I get the impression that Scotty thinks Nissans aren’t made all that well.
Hey, I drove nissans all my life and I don't know whether I am lucky, but I never had major problems with them. I drove a 96 maxima, 2015 quest, curently we drive 2017 xtrail (diesel) and a 88 datsun bluebird also diesel. No problems whatsoever.
I live in Thailand part time and all trucks and SUVs are diesel powered.
Most have sticks and all are super reliable.
When I worked as sales representative, the most common vehicle stranded on the road was the Nissan Altima by far, the second one Nissan Sentra, third one Chevy Cruze.
I’ve owned two Nissan pathfinders a 2005 and a 2016 2005 got up to 16500 miles and my 2016 has 182000 miles they had their share of problems but ran great I just had my transmission replace with a new one on my 2016 plus some other stuff done and it runs great
"Had there share of problems" and just "replaced the transmission"
Exactly just buy a Honda or Toyota and not have issues. My 2014 corolla is at 14000 right now with zero issues. Bought it used with 44000.
@@swissham6162ummmm I’m confused 😮
@Angel-ms9ou guy I replied to implied that nissians are fine. While at the same time he's replaced a transmission and has had problems with his nissians. which is the opposite of what he's implying.
@@swissham6162 👍 I used to deliver jatco transmissions that Nissan uses, they suck.

@@randybeard6040 Definitely a starting point when trouble shooting electrical issues.
Great choice, from a Nissan owner. you dodged a bullet there.
For a short while I used to drive a old '84 Nissan Sunny. Great car. Other than the radio, zero electronics.
Love you Scotty! I start every day checking your vlog! So perfect!
I have a 2020 Nissan Altima with 88k miles no problems other than regualr maintenance and needing a battery replaced but other than its been good to me and I shall be good to it👍💯🔥
Sometimes its the weather. When it is drizzly, foggy, and cold, my Odyssey alarm goes off at midnight. When the weather clears up, no problem.

Only new car in the U.S. that you can buy new for under $20k with a 5 speed manual transmission and a manual E brake.
LOL

Yea, Nissans can be super solid and just as good if not better than what these goobers want to stroke themselves to. I've also seen plenty of Toyotas putter out, but don't tell that to all the pretty boys that just follow the crowd of what's "popular".
Well it's an 02. That's when they were better made. I would say drive it until the wheels (and transmission) go out.

Its 02 tho. If it was anything 2010 or after, first thing gonna go out is that crappy transmission.

Weird.
So the cvt transmission is the problem, not the whole company? Is that what the headline should’ve been?

For a moment I thought you were talking about the chrystler PT cruiser.
Best thing the customer could do is trade it in while there are no lights and get a Camry.
The older Nissans were really very dependable especially their p/u.
Ford good too!!! For small engines they use the Duramax which is based on Mazda's L-Type Engine!!!
Yes but back in the day, @2001 Toyota Camry and Nissan Maxima were #1 in Consumer Reports. They were both made in Japan.

They could start by changing the name back to “Datsun.”
I daily a Subaru 5 speed and a Truck with a 4L60. Never felt more superior with my "weak" transmissions than when CVTs came out. LMAO.
Thats gut GM transmission. Ihad it in a Buick Century, never had any priblems
Guess my 2010 was one of the last cars built right.
Been having it for 14yrs. I'm at 156,000 miles
I would probably end up putting a battery heater under it with a thermostatic switch if the reprogramming didn't help.
Nothing beats the 1990 Hyundai, that can do 120MPH with a 85 MPH speedometer
Do you ever get gassy while driving around everybody's car?
After eating Taco Bell I do
Come on man, we all know that just about all English, most French, and all Italian cars are only good for about 8 K before the first problems show up. Soon to be added to that list are Ford, GM, Chrysler.
No more electronics/microprocessors. Automotive engineering has gone off the rails in recent decades. They can keep it.
It could be RF Radio Interference that comes from a strong radio station antenna when you drive by... I once affected my cars ECM by transmitting a radio signal from my ham radio equipment mounted inside the car..The car would actually slow down every time i pushed the microphone button.
