it irks me when groups like wonder girls and 4minute get left out of the conversation about iconic 2nd gen groups and hits. "nobody" was the first kpop song to get into bbhot 100 and while their success weren't continuous due to jyp's plan to get them in the US market which didn't really go anywhere, all members are still doing well and their hits and their impact are still very relevant and will continue to be.
While I do agree that 4Minute was underrated and overlooked for so long…4M, and especially WG, are definitely far from being left out of that convo when it comes to discussing 2nd gen. WG was the face of JYP(prior to Miss A) during the 2nd gen and 4M put Cube on the map.
Back when mics were truely ON. This is your friendly reminder to go check out live performances from 2nd gen idols~ listen to their raw live vocals and appreciate all the hand mics that actually pick up sound lol Even if some are not considered the "best vocalists," it was really a golden age in kpop especially for live performances. I recommend Wonder Girls, SNSD, SHINee, 2PM, BAP (pls check out No Mercy live), Miss A, SISTAR, 2NE1. And disclaimer, this isn't a comparison to idols now, just a reminder to appreciate the idols who came before as well! :) Really it highlights the difference of how companies market their idols, then vs now! (I know idols have harder dances now & it plays into why they sing live less/have louder backing vocals, no judgement!)
@@rejeylola definitely! And because of the dances being easier to learn, this was the time of massive kpop flashmobs all around the world!! That was such a wild time lol seeing huge groups of kpop fans of different fandoms just coming together to enjoy music and dance.
Tell Me is literally the song that got me into K-pop when I was around 10. I would watch/listen to it daily and still know the choreography to this day. The Wonder Girls are icons, and I genuinely get so happy whenever they are mentioned 💖
OMG! I'm a Wonderful and have always wanted a Wonder Girls content and you did this with justice! Maybe next we can explore the second / or third era of Wonder Girls where they became a band. And yes for y'all watching, Wonder Girls is THAT group that single handly gave way to what seems to be a phenomenon right now
Thank you for this very valuable information! This is probably one of the most significant developments in the history of K-pop and I'm glad you made such a comprehensive and easy to understand video about it! 🙏😄🌸💕
IT WAS ACTUALLY me randomly catching snsds version of TELL ME that was my FIRST ever video into kpop that stunns me ..... i didnt even know what was going on but they looked so perfect to only be thrown into genie ... wonder girls are right up there with snsd 2ne1 ... and kara .. for that whats and whys of GirlGroups in Kpop
I am so lucky because of my older friends I started to listen to K-pop during 2nd generation rise ! I literally seen the debut teasers of all legendary groups like SNSD, Big Bang & Wonder Girls! I remember how Tell Me went viral & WG reached 1M views on UA-cam which was MASSIVE back then ^^ I was more SNSD fan but Wonder Girls & especially “tell me” was one of my fav songs ^^
Thanks for the video Midnight and I gotta say NewJeans and the producers did really well with the remake, it's one of the best muscian tributes I've seen in Kpop another song I would suggest is Kim Sung-Jae's 'As I Told You' if it hasn't been covered already on your channel
Great video. You can make videos about Big Bang’s “Fantastic Baby”, EXO’s “Wolf” or “Overdose” , Twice’s “TT”, just to name a few iconic songs and their impact on the industry.
Another AWESOME video from you helping me learn more of K-Pop History 😊 One song I'd suggest you to Examine is Wonder Girls "I Feel You" where Sunmi rejoined The group in 2015 and they played as a band with their own instruments (Sunmi learning Bass) Midnight ❤️😎👍
Thank you so much for this video! As a Wonder Girls fan, after Tell Me became viral again on tiktok., It makes me so mad that these new kpop fans discredit Wonder Girls left and right! Wonder Girls are legend from 2nd gen group! Also Sohee on the thumbnail is fckg stunning! Her line 'Omona' always gonna be the most iconic line in Kpop!
Recommendations: Kim Gun Mo- your like no other Kim Sung Jae- so to say The black cat (nero) Nan Arayo Ses dreams come true Coming of age ceremony Tvxq mirotic Rain rainism Lee hyori u go girl Snsd gee or genie Hot candy
Love these kinds of vids. Brings back so much nostalgia as someone who came into kpop during 2nd gen. So glad to see the golden era still being relevant and enjoyed by the new gen of idols and stans. There are so many song breakdowns I could recommend: continuing the girl group section we have to breakdown the impact of the Nation's Girl Group iconic Gee by SNSD "Baby Baby" - 4MEN "Abracadabra" - Brown Eyed Girls or even breakdown popular OST songs since often times OSTs would rival idol songs and even go up against each other on music shows...so I'd also recommend "Do You Know" by Someday
I discovered KPOP through Lollipop (BB × 2NE1) collab which landed me to Wonder Girls' YT page. Tell Me was such an ear worm I kept on singing it. During that time, KPOP is labeled as weird and listeners of it were also bullied (well at least from my country). Look at how times have changed, those who bullied me before for liking KPOP back in 2009 are now addicted to it (mostly the big mainstream groups)
I think a video on Dreamcatcher might be cool, how they're one of the top groups who had to wait the longest for a first win and covering why they're unique in the kpop space.
I would give my left kidney to have been a part of the K-Pop fandom in 2007, must've felt like such a wild time to be a GG stan (maybe a bit like the 3rd-4th gen transition).
Girl it was the wild wild west back then. You just had to pray that your favourite girl group ended up on a TV show with Super Junior, TVXQ or big bang. Nothing was subbed, hardly anything was on iTunes in the early days, and you just had to pray to God that some random person in Korea would upload the music videos to any website. Or if you where lucky enough someone in the jpop community in Japan was a fan of the same group and would upload it to some weird as website, also nothing and I mean nothing was in HD 720 you where lucky if you 480 to tell the faces apart. Don't even get me started on trying to get albums imported or you stumble upon them at some random market. It was hard even listening to Jpop at that time and they where the popular Asian music at that time tbh.
@@kerronwalker1589 That honestly sounds like so much fun! I was vaguely aware of K-Pop starting around 2007 because a friend made me watch some Park Chan-Wook films and that lead to watching some dramas, but I didn't really get into it until 2013 (I Got A Boy was what did it). That whole scene before the beginning of K-Pop's globalization really sounds like indie rock, or the underground metal scene, in terms of quality and availability of content.
Im loving this song breakdown videos! Its so interesting to learn about the history of the song within the social and historic context of South Korea, also the editing on these couple of last videos has been so nice and clean 🤩 loving this new format 🫶🏽
Been a fans of The legendary Wonder Girls for 13 years now, I have never regret stanning them. They inspired me alot, gave me happiness, been through all the ups and downs. The greatest girl group ever!!Still supporting them now, even each of the members are focusing on their own life/solos. Hopping that they will reunite one day 😭😭😭😭
I hold a lot of nostalgia for that song, it's a dance that I did as a kid in my bedroom and just last week on a random dance. It's a key moment in my life as a kpop stan, because this is one of the songs that literally pulled me into the genre in general. It has been years, but it still ends up in my spotify wrapped every year and I'm really excited about the fact that a new generation of kpop stans can fall in love with this song again. And fun thing to this day Hyuna is my favorite person and the love I have for Sunmi is beyond.
I was a child then and WG was the one group I kept coming back to (later SNSD). I especially love their ballad song that I no longer know the title but it goes "saranghae... haessal boda nunbusin... noye misoreul... smsmsmhere .... noye du soneul. Saranghae, saranghae~
next to dissect song: any girl generation songs like gee, genie, bring the boys step, mister, honey by kara i am the best, i dont care, cant nobody and any song of 2ne1 my house and hand up by 2pm a, mach, sunshine by rainbow
Dreamcatcher's Yoohyeon said that Irony was the song that got her interested in K-Pop as a possible career. 🥹 Even songs that are standard for the industry have more influence than you know!
I still have an Old PC Hard Drive with the Tell me music video downloaded on it from YT. At the time I didn't even know what K pop was and didn't even realized I had downloaded a Kpop music video until I fully got into Kpop in 2016.
As someone who was into kpop at the time I didn't even learn of the song that way. A lot of Korean MMOs had the dance in their games at the time so I had to look up what this "tell me" dance was. It was everywhere.
이 노래 때문에 한국어를 배웠어 ❤ If it was not for this song I wouldn't be a kpop fan. I wouldn't know korean. I wouldn't have studied at Korea University and I would call Seoul as one of my homes ❤ discovering this song in 2007 changed my lifeim happy I was able to tell Sunmi in person that the song she was not so fond of changed my life 😅 it gave her a huge laugh and she gave me a hug for it 😊
I love this song! New Jeana introduced me. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video as now I understand how important and impactful Tell Me continues to be!
THank yo for giving Wonder Girls their much deserved flowers!! If i could suggest 2 things it would be a full history on Wonder Girls similar to how you did the Kara video and the same for Shinee! I feel llike Shinee is an underrated boy group despite how popular they are if that makes sense. I feel like they kinda got the girl group treatment in that they had amazing nonstop experimental bops. But i feel like they get overlooked a lot and it makes me sad lol. Thank you in advance if you do! I look forward to your uploads!
i really enjoyed this video, thank you!! unfortunately i was a latecomer kpop fan so i missed out on the original era but 2nd gen music has turned out to be my favorite overall, it was just such a fun pop explosion. also the cute TXT cameo caught me by surprise lmao, kings of giving 2nd/3rd gen ggs their flowers.
I love and miss Wonder Girls!! They often get left out of conversations regarding who was the most impactful to kpop! I will never forget when I saw them live in America and the things they accomplished in Korea and beyond!
i first heard the song tell me was one of the episodes of videostar of mbc every1, yeeun was the guest, one of 4 host of the show, sandara/dara dance the iconic wonder girls song like tell me, nobody with yeeun as respect and so hot 6:37 dancing prisoners in a jail facility in cebu city, philippines and also tourist can visit for their dance presentation
I know you discussed this in the VIXX history video, but do you think you can do a video about one of their songs? I want to say it was On and On or Voodoo and how the styling of those stages opened up the door to other groups doing ocer the top concept performances?
i saw a korean comment saying in korea elders might not know gangnam style, but they know tell me. that should give you an idea on how big it was in that time period. As an OG wonder girls fan its so surreal seeing a song from my high school days go viral more than a decade later with the teens again on social media, like what year is this lmao
I would love to see the Hyuna version of Tell Me with her as Wonder Woman. Yubin was a great addition though. I'd like you to do a break down on SNSD's Tell Me Your Wish (Genie).
Love love this video so much!! Also for a suggestion i dont know if you have done “VIXX - Chained Up?” Icon of the collars ❤❤❤❤❤ keep up the amazing work! 😊
