    Just ordered the silver/ grey 2024 (74) with the heated ergo low seat. I'm 5 ft 7 inches with a 28" inseam so I'm hoping this bike fits me. Again coming from a Triumph Tiger 900 but the 2023 Aregon edition and managed that well. Nice to see some info on how us "vertically challenged" people manage this bike. Preload drop to 0% worked well on the test ride. 😊😊😊

    Great Video! Very informative. I am trying to decide between KTM SAS and Triumph 1200 Rally explorer. Btw I was told in the dealership last year that you can electronically lower KTM SAS. Is that true? Maybe it is a new feature..

    As a fellow short arse I can fully understand the challenges these bikes bring and having recently had the R version of this bike which at 880 is a tad higher I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how quickly I’ve got used to it - what has helped me no end is watching the Bret Tkacs UA-cam video on short riders and how to get used to only having only one foot on the deck - well worth a watch

      Hiya Rob yeah good old Bret’S vids. I watch them he’s brilliant! Also had some contact with him regarding my high speed wobble and suspension concerns which he helped me out 👍 nice guy. You’ve done well getting on with the R model wow. That’s a tall girl ! Too much for me haha. But like you say it’s all possible if you really want it. It’s all technique and confidence. Have you taken it off-road yet?

      @@RicardoYeep no not yet - it replaced a GSA that I’d had for a couple of years - planning to take it off road when we finally get to go on a Spain trip but it will only be gravel tracks tbh - it’ll need some different tyres on as it comes with road biased tyres. I use another bike for green lanes etc .

      He Rob! Yeah I love Spain and their gravel trails. Went to Bardenas Reales in 2019 (last holiday 😩) google it! Also some cool logging trails (not so gravelled) just go off piste and explore most the time there is no one around anyway! You’ll have a blast! Makes me jealous and need to sort something for myself “lockdown” and “Travel” permitting without all this traffic light system 😩! Also I went on a brand new XCA and the oem tyres did fine Battlax tyres. Non need for hard core tyres particularly if Mike munching and it’s only compacted hard Surface with gravel 👍

    This video inspired me to hop on one at my local dealer an man do I regret it. Last time I tried was in 2017 and the bike was overwhelming, ridiculous tall. They really did a great job re-engineering since then as it was a remarkably comfortable toes on the ground bike for another 29 inch inseam with the low seat setting. Obviously the regret is focused on the need to own one now.

      Hiya buddy. Thanks for the comment and watching the clip of mine! Good to hear from you. Apologies for the late reply. Lots going on in life etc... But pleased to hear you managed to pop in to your dealer and check one out. They are a different bike altogether than the previous gen which were so tall.. As you have worked out.. The draw back is now getting your hands on one haha.. I am now maybe overstretching myself.. literally. As I have now changed to the R to see what its like to own. SO far no drops :)

    2 ideas. Add a jubilee clamp with rubber hose around it to give grip and protect the stand paint. And tighten it around the stand at the preferred position - circa 4 inches up maybe, and that works brilliantly when kicking or lifting side stand. The rubber hose(jubilee is passed through it) gives grip to the boot sole as well.
    Other tip, add a foot plate to stand foot as it rises the bike slightly. Cheers

      Hello mate and thanks for watching and great feedback. So far never had a problem with my own . But that’s isn’t saying problems don’t happen. It’s how good your dealer is at managing them I would say. If your treated like a film star with any gripe and you always get sorted then I don’t see an issue.
      As for the z1000sx. Lovely bike as mate has one and also my dealership I work for is a kwak dealer too as well as a ktm dealer. The power is different ball park. The 1290 is a 1.3L V twin. Pure muscle from the the low down revs. It pulls like a train. Switch off all the rider aids and you’ll be having the bike on its back wheel through most of its gears if you are that inclines. Haha… that’s the beauty of this bike. It is a do all bike and can be as sensible and conservative looking as you want. But it shares the same hooligan engine as the 1290 Super Duke R.. just detuned and reworked to push out 160hp instead of 180HP. 🫣🤦‍♂️💪💪💪 you gotta test ride one in with maniac setting and you’ll know what I mean when you grab a fist full 😃

    Thanks for the video! I'm really interested to hear your thoughts as you mentioned you had a Tiger 800 XCA beforehand. I currently own an 800 XCA and looking to upgrade to the 1290SAS, im 5'7 and the Tiger feels quite top heavy to me. I'm used to it and have no issues with control but the KTM is just so tempting to 'upgrade' to for all the tech. How does the SAS compare to the Tiger in terms of low speed weight, U-turn type feeling, is the seat height comparable? Once any bike is properly moving especially modern ones, the weight tends to disappear so that should be much of an issue. Do you miss the Tiger? Cheers.

      Hello Mark! I love this bike! And thanks for your time and feedback! Yeah good question on luggage. Still waiting for them 2 month overdue and hopefully this weekend receive them. However I initially ordered the OEM plastics as I have always had aluminium adventure luggage before. I rarely use panniers so wanted to keep clean look when not installed. Bit delay after delay I am now getting black Touratech set which isn’t a bad thing. And no extra cost as the dealer offered. Also thinking about my akrapovic the pannier scaffolding will act as further protection in a drop so is a good move I think. I am also waiting on engine bars and skid plate. One of them not until September!!!!! And not much after market available at the moment! So no dirt for me for a while lol… this S model is insane and a real do all bike! Hi Ricardo!
    Thank you for all these enriching videos!
    I'm about to buy this bike to replace my 2015 1290
    I have a question about the saddle adjustment. I'm tall, and when I tested the bike at my dealer the seat in the high position and fell back on its own twice in a row to the low position, while riding! Did you have this problem? It seems that ktm knows about it, but for the moment this problem is not corrected. You who already own this bike, do you think it is possible to fix it with a "temporary tweak" while ktm is doing a recall? Thanks in advance!

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  3 роки тому

      Hell my friend! Thanks for watching and enjoying the short videos. Much appreciated.
      I am very well aware of the problem for this seat for tall riders. And that for a lot of people is it always falls into the low seat setting. I have looked at the seat structure and how it is held in place. It seems a very poor design at both the front fixing and also at the rear fixing. I have made a short video to help explain what I mean and will upload shortly.
      Unfortunately I do not have an idea how to temporary fix this issue. As any fix I can see would require "damaging" the seat. And this would risk possible KTM rejecting a warranty claim if they have fixed the issue and have new seats available. I would suggest you hold on and do not modify.
      I know this is a pain and not what you want to hear. I just cannot see a way of actually fixing the seat without drilling or cutting the seat in any way.
      Anyway I will put a short clip up shortly to show what I mean. And you can see at your own leisure. As I know at the dealers you will not be taking the time to investigate seat problems.. Hope it helps (even if it doesn't fix it sorry)

    Hi Ricardo. Thanks for the video. What are those cables under the passenger seat in time 6:26? This is for GoPro or something like that? I need charging batteries for my GoPro and DJI Drone in my Tailbag and i try to find some elegant solution. Greetings from Czech Republic :-)

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  3 роки тому +1

      Hi again mate. No those cables at the back of my seat are for my Optimate3 battery charger/optimiser which I keep connected to the bike when in the garage! However the same priniciple would apply for an extra charge lead. Without having to tap into any other bike cables or use any other accessory points. A straight forward way would be the same as my optimate cable which is connected direct to the battery. I would use one of these if I were to need rear end charge points for a 5v 2.1 amp usb charge requirement. Have a look and check for yourself though. When not in use you can disconnect it and attached the waterproof cap. (same as my charge connection).
      Have a look at the current ebay item 393398264103 (See what you think). Simply run to the rear under the passenger seat?
      Great to hear from more international riders!

      Hey up Sean! Thank you kindly sir on the feedback. Much appreciated and good to know I am helping out. So your one of the verically blessed ! Yeah I hear about the seating issue for taller riders. You should go back to the dealer and get it sorted if you can. I know for a fact that KTM pulled off all there accessory seating options with the exception of about 2 seats due to this problem. Its a nown problem that in the high position the standard seat just clicks back down once weight it applied after a while. I am not sure they have resolved this or even know for sure it relates to why they pulled 90% of their seat offerings from the oline catalgue. ( I know as I had already ordered a low seat but once I had the bike decided to check out the heated passenger seats and saw nearly all their seats removed from the online parts... Dealer also agreed with me), I am still now 2 months on waiting for my heated seat (LOW) and not sure when I am getting it yet. Deffo check with your dealer regarding this problem. KTM in my opinion should be offering to give you a new one when the or if they resolve this or at least maje a note on the system you are waiting for it if they do (under warranty). cheers again and thanks for dropping in from that amazing land down under !!!! Turn bike off for a minute. Restart (not on centre stand).
      Main thing is keeping battery optimum.
      If this doesn’t clear it then might be genuine issue for a dealer under warranty.
      I think it will clear though. Just ensure when starting , it’s not on centre stand, and after pressing “grey” race on button you let it settle and complete its “on” cycle before hitting the ignition.
      Fingers crossed 🤞

You need to see what you will use the bike mostly I think. But more important which one give you the "buzz" feeling even just looking at it when parked up. Not just from practial reasons. Go with your gut instinct. All I can say this S model is everything and more that the reviews say. Its the best thing out in a long time as an all rounder! Cheers Ric

    Hi Ricardo! How does it feel moving or duking it around in traffic and tight parking spots compared to last Gen?

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Ricardo!! 🤣 (not often I get to say that here in uk) . Anyway to answer your question unfortunately I cannot compare to previous gen. I chose not to buy previous gen due to the geometry and being short was not suitable for daily central London commuting. I need to filter and man handle the bike in and out of traffic Jams and stationary vehicles. So I needed to be very aware of my capabilities and the bike.
      I am very experienced in London traffic after 25 years. And also ridden tall bikes where I can only just tip toe for the last 8 years. I usually ride one foot on peg and one on the floor when stopped. But for me the previous gen was too much. In addition to it being a heavy bike.
      I can only speak from experience as a short rider in and city commuter. This new model is crazy good!
      The new geometry already makes the bike fraction lower, but with a low seat option for me makes an extra benefit. Obviously if your tall thus is irrelevant.
      But also the big difference compare top previous model is the excellent low centre of gravity as there is no fuel tank on top. The fuel is kept mainly at the base near the engine cases and partially down each side of the bike. It feels more like an 800 than a 1300. That’s the most prevalent to me. The height I can cope but the low cog makes a world of difference in low speed manoeuvres !
      You must really have a go to see what I mean. Not sure that really answer your question but is best I can do .
      Thanks

      @RicardoYeep  3 роки тому

      Hey congrats on the new bike! Brilliant! Yes that’s a little tall but not crazy tall. I understand the seat on the 390 is fixed and doesn’t adjust (I might be wrong). Your first option and cheapest is just practice and build confidence and experience on handling the bike as it comes. One foot down and one foot on the opposite foot peg. Learn to adapt an quickly slide to the opposite foot of you need to. I will admit that it can be awkward when needing to walk the bike in traffic or backwards if need to. Most likely you’ll need to get off the bike if you can’t reverse it.
      Other option and maybe the one you will choose. KTM do a lowering spring kit for this very same reason. It lowers the bike by 25mm make the bike now 830mm much more user friendly !

It’s something I would have been doing whilst stopped. However personally I don’t see much difference in leg or foot to floor ability by removing all the preload. The only time I’ve noticed is with additional weight like a pillion. It does make it much easier to foot both on the ground. However as a solo rider I Personally don’t see much difference whilst sat on it. But a massive difference when riding and the softness of the ride. Don’t get the impression by backing off all the pre load you can lower the bike. It’s really immaterial in that respect personally speaking. I’ve tried it!

      Hello Michael! Thanks for dropping a message. I have to be honest and say it depends on the persons experience and confidence with regards to short guys and tall bikes. If I say it’s too tall then am sure some pint sized chap will shoot me down and tell me he rides like chris birch around the streets of London in rush hour no problem 😂… so here’s my two cents… I have the same inside leg as you. I’m used to riding a taller bike than this SAS I have now (the tiger XC) was taller. I think at 840 on its lowest setting. I am fine commuting around London in traffic and man handling it. Always aware one foot down and other on the leg. And always aware I might be putting a foot down in a worn part of the road or a dip. As this can take you by surprise and cause you to go over!! I’ve done this for donkey years so am ok with it. I found it a right handful off-road where times you need feet down in the slow stuff and really struggled and come off when a taller chap wouldn’t….. now after saying that. The SAR is a bloody tall bike and taller than the Tiger XC. Personally speaking of course I would not buy the SAR. If your a short guy and your just buying it because of the paint scheme it’s a bad move I think. If your never going to go off road and I mean gnarly off road. I don’t mean gravel trails. Then you should get the S. You’ll be safer on it, still have a one foot down one on the leg policy. But not so much. Plus you get all the bells and whistles which am sure you already know (I won’t list) that the SAR doesn’t get. In fact to be quite blunt. Even if I were 6ft I’d still not buy the SAR after thinking about it (initially I did want one). I’d never get value from it and considering it cost more and you effectively get less you can take advantage of it would not be worth it in my opinion. Again for me I’m talking about !
      Cheers Ric
      for what it’s worth I’m doing a two day rally event of around 600km on the SAS and am confident it will be fine as long as I’m not stupid 👍

      @@RicardoYeep Thank you Ric for your quick response. I think so as well. Some short guys will say they are the best riders on the planet and when you see them it is horrible to look at. I am glad that you wrote me your honest opinion on this topic because as you said some people especially short men think they can ride everything which I think is wrong but fair enough 90% of motorcycle out there has seat height not more than 840mm. I had for 2 months borrowed 2020 BMW S1000RR which has seat height 830mm and I got used to it very quickly. I always wanted Adventure bike because in the future I want to travel on my motorcycle to different countries maybe with my future girlfriend and Adventure bike gives you little bit of everything. You can ride 100+ miles on the road or off the road without any problem. To be honest I like the R version more because it looks more muscular and It is bigger bike so I think my mind is telling me that it will be more capable in off road conditions and better all around. I am not planning going on gnarly off road but when there is some harsh terrain I would like to manage it without worrying of getting stuck like it happened to me with my current naked motorcycle. I was thinking of getting even the new BMW R1250 GS Adventure which has 850mm so it isnt so much taller than the KTM or Honda Africa Twin but I dont know mate what do you think. It is hard to choose from all these amazing motorcycles. So when I will get money I should get SAS instead of SAR. And If I made a mistake inn writting I am sorry but English is not my first language I am still learning but I want to make videos in English to practise it

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  3 роки тому +2

      Hello Michael I know what you mean about the s1000RR as this is the same as my older R1 (seat height 830mm). However the adventure bikes are a different ball park. Its not just about seat height but the centre of gravity as ADV bikes are taller and fuel tank (generally) higher up and also carry more fuel (weight). So bear this in mind if you dont go for a 1290 (that has split fuel tank bladders low down). But I must point out the SAR and the SAS are identical apart from 3 main things, Wheels, Suspension and Software. And I hear it all the time about the SAR being better off road and an all round bike. I agree 100% if you are using it as a heavy off road tool. But I can go on my bike (SAS) anywhere a SAR can go. It just means I need to be more careful is all. And to be honest I will probably be using my SAS more off road than some people who buy SARS. Just have a good think about what you will mainly be using it for. As the SAR is a SURGEON and is a dedicated specialist tool for hard core adventure riding. The kind of off road where you probably accept the bike will go down and you know you will be picking it up.... Proper off road where is bloody hard going and you are wanting to stand a lot. If all your going to be doing is "riding" on dirt trails but class that as enough to justify the SAR then I think you may be missing out on a lot. Like Semi active suspension, Adaptive cruise control, And a more sports orientated geometry which the SAS offers. And is cheaper!!! You can always add the SAR accessories like I have if you like a more aggressive look. But if you buy the SAR I would guess its not as easy to add the things the SAS has if at all. The SAS is like a GP (local Dr) that can do a bit of everything and does it very well. Choice is yours :)
      GS another great bike, and tried and tested. Good reputation and lots of Support around for it. But it will not reward you I dont think with the same level of rider fun. The 1290 Vtwin engine is an animal. Its like a race bike. Its like comparing a Volvo with a Subaru, The GS will probably (I hate to say it) last a bit longer but the the KTM will keep you smiling for longer :) (if your a racebike guy),
      Honda Africa twin again nice bike, I nearly had one. Cant beat Honda build quality usually. But I think the AF are sluggish and slow in comparison. But to be fair they are much smaller engined than the 1290 and the GS.
      Cheers
