This was more painful than the Cup Run in 99'. The Sabres had a better balanced team and would have matched up better vs. the Avs than they did vs. the Stars in 1999. The late game collapse of Game 6 was gut-wrenching, and the Kasparatis goal in Game 7 was sickening. Those 2 plays changed the course of the franchise, and not for good.
06 was still the closest we ever came. If McKee does not miss game 7 the Sabres keep the lead and go on to beat the 8th seeded miracle run Oilers. Both the Canes and Oilers were so bad after that year. It was there for the Sabres taking.
Id imangine they would lose to NJ if they'd gotten by Pit. But who's to know how the seedings would have been since Buff would've had a better record with Peca
@@Buffalosabskis Agreed. I feared NJ and Detroit from 95 - 2004. Just how Brodeur could steal a win with ease and that Defense .. my god. Same with Detroit
@@Kronwall Even in like 2008 I never liked having to watch the Sabres play NJ. It seemed like it was always a 2 to 1 shootout loss. Then in 2010 the Sabres had that great year with Miller and playing a very defense first game. Sadly it did not translate to the playoffs

This team was so damn good. I think they definitely make the SCF if not for the breakdown against the Penguins in game 6.

I would have to agree to - Had we gotten by Pit I'm sure Peca would've stayed and Hasek to.

How much further does the 2001 team go if they sign Mike Peca?
Easily through this series and likely another round after that. Hard to imagine them beating the Avs.
