In the UK, handguns are banned (apart from Northern Ireland). But you can obtain a variety of single shot and semi automatic rifles and shotguns. You need to be a member of registered gun club, or a recognised profession requiring firearms such as pest controller, gamesman or farmer. You have to apply for a 5 year license, and undergo an extensive background check. Your license can be revoked at will should the police deem you to have exceeded its bounds. The police conduct regular inspections of your storage systems, weapons and ammo, and you have to declare if you are being treated for any mental illness or impairment. It's not a perfect system. There are still illegal firearms in circulation, an occasionally legally held firearms are used for criminal purposes. The point I am making is that the US can honour the 2nd Amendment and maintain a tradition of gun ownership, whilst having tough regulations that reduce the access of weapons to people who really shouldn't have them. There is a way forward with a sensible compromise.
What about bombs? Because UK has never had a public shooting problem, since before guns were 'banned'. But far as I know, bombs have always been restricted and UK has long had a public bombing problem.
Dear America, before you invade other countries militarily please fix your education, your healthcare, your gun laws and your outdated infrastructure first. greetings from Canada
John, Where do I sign up to become a Canadian. I've seen Kitsault B.C. in videos and would really like to take up residence there and leave the madness of my once great nation behind.
"A childs life trumps my right to bear arms every time" Quote from my Dad when he handed in his guns when we changed the gun laws here in the UK after the last mass school shooting.
I was hard headed & staunchly right wing when it came to guns however I've come to the conclusion that gun control laws do work & should be implemented to protect the citizens of the US. And while I may have the right to bear arms other ppl have the right safety & the pursuit of happiness.
Actually you were always liberal. Why has country, like Jamaica for example with very strict gun laws, ten times higher homicide rate than USA? Central American countries even worse. And all that seeps into USA.
As Cenk says, to English people like myself it seems so obvious that the number of guns is the primary cause of this epidemic, but sadly it seems many Americans would rather live in a state of denial, utterly impervious to facts and reason...
Well that's up to you, you won your independence from us, but all I know is that the overwhelming majority of British people think your gun laws are crazy...we don't even routinely arm our police as in the course of their work they don't encounter guns very often...in our schools we don't have pupils having to practice 'active shooter' drills as we have had only 1 school shooting in the last 25 years...you've had over 12 just this year, it's madness...
Like the fact that it is people CHOOSING to kill other people. The problem is how easily people are CHOOSING to kill others, not what ever weapon they CHOOSE to use.
Okay then, well can you explain to me then why so many Americans CHOOSE to kill other Americans far more than most developed nations...because the overall homicide rate (for all types of murder) is 0.9 per 100,000 in the UK whereas in the US it's 4.88 (According to UNODC data compiled in 2015)...why is there such a significantly larger murder rate in your country?
You need do nothing with the constitution. I´m sorry to be the one breaking it to you but SCOTUS has ruled years ago that the 2nd only gives you the right to "a gun" not the right to a specific gun. So as long as the government let´s you keep a revolver (or even a musket) you are golden with the constitution. And - despite what Faux News or Darth Orange are trying to feed you - gun control laws are NOT about taking ALL guns away. All of the countries with stricter gun laws allow shotguns to hunt or even sidearms for personal protection (you have to go through a licensing process though and have to repeat that every few years). But none of them see any need for you to have an AR-15.
Just so that everyone knows you can own guns in Britain. It's perfectly legal. You get a police check, have a police officer come round to check on your gun safe (that it's fixed to the wall so that it can't be stolen) and each of your guns is registered to you. There are 4 guns in my house and it is physically impossible for anyone but my dad to actually get their hands on them. When he's on holiday my uncle has the safe key (another registered gun owner). Just put gun regulation in place....seriously people. It doesn't take away your guns it gives you the freedom to go to school/mall/airport/work without being afraid.
Thanks for that Sarah. A majority of American gun owners (like me) want sensible gun regulations, but we have little power. Corporate interests (like gun manufacturers) have all the power because of our system of legalized bribery.
And if you just watch a couple Bosnianbill videos, youll see how secure those guns are. Fact is UK NEVER had a rampage shooting problem, but still, somehow, their gun crackdown still didnt fix it. But ok, lets go with it... how does having your name on a gun(registration) stop you from going on a suicide mission to kill as many people as you can?
Here in the UK we are not only stricter about guns but we take mental health seriously. When the US blames gun violence on mental health, the only response is 'you don't take that seriously either.'
I have been dealing with mental illness for a long time, I deal with terrible bouts of depression, I have a hard time socializing and I have an anger problem, I am self aware enough to know that I should NOT be allowed to buy a gun, but even though I have been to a few mental wards, even though I have tried to kill myself, I can still go into any number of places and buy a shotgun and leave with it the same day.
Which is why im keeping my gun. The Bill of Rights gaurantees me the right to bare arms so that I can protect myself from all forms of tyrany. Our government has never been so corrupt and Im not STUPID enough to eat up their campaign to edit that part of the law giving them the power over us. Your never going to stop guns from geting into the hands of bad guys period. Thats just life. You have to learn how to deal with reality. There is no law that is going to protect you from being murdered or hit by a car or drowned in a pool. Its funny that nobodys trying to take away our cars and are swimming pools. The same should go for guns. People are obviously scared of things they dont understand. If we want to stop reckless killings then the best you can do is to educate the people about guns and hold the people responsible for the damage that their guns create. If someones kid gets ahold of their parents guns or someone elses then the gun owner should be held responsible. If someone goes mental and decides to shoot a bunch of people then your going to have to deal with that as shit happens or stop being affraid and carry one yourself for protection. Because Im not going to turn in my guns until the government turns in theirs. If it is that bad then they cant have any either and they will never give up theirs because they're not as stupid as people like you!
Yeah they killed 800k just because of 'big knives' not the fact that the army and police allowed it to happen/also took part or the fact that they announced over the radio to go kill people or the fact the rest of the world turned a blind eye
Three common threads to School Mass Shootings in U.S. 1) Shooter has connection to Gov / Military 2) Gov is alerted but does nothing to prevent it 3) Shooter is medicated / psychiatric care
YL Calif THANK YOU!!! People act like guns werent EASIER TO BUY in the 50s and 60s, couldve bought one off back of a magazine. Its gotten HARDER to buy a gun. BAR has been around since 30s, thats a very dangerous gun. Its like people dont realize they could read about nearly every single one of these shooters and why they did it. Theres a very obvious pattern and issue and it isnt guns. Its medicated and ill
There are 21,000 gun suicides per year in the US. Please folks, don't keep a gun in your home. The greatest danger is to you and your family. We will all feel episodes of despair in our lives - don't have the means of your self destruction in a shoe box in your cupboard.
Excellent point Kenny! It's well known in the mental health field that those who were suicidal but didn't have an immediate tool, usually a gun, often didn't turned to suicide again.. Great point!
6chhelipilot, so does a bow and arrow, a knife, a rock, a stick, an axe, a sling shot, a car, a bat, scissors, a bottle, a broken bottle, a wrench, rope, a truck, a chair, bombs, a chain, a pipe, water, boiling water, poison, and can keep going. My point is is that virtually anything can be used as a *tool* to help making killing other people more easier.
"My point is is that virtually anything can be used as a tool to help making killing other people more easier." You mean that anything can be used as a *weapon,* and that is correct. But guns are weapons. They have no other purpose. If you kill someone with a car, you are using it for a purpose it was not designed to achieve. If you kill someone by firing bullets from a gun at them, you are using the gun exactly as it was designed to function.
Michael 마익흘 Aronson, Well cars weren't designed to kill people either but they kill more people than guns do and I don't hear anybody calling for an assault car band. Cars are a vital part of our lives and if you live in places like California or Houston then it's your life. However, the idea that the gun was designed to kill, makes it inherently *evil,* and therefore should be banned, is as about as juvenile as dismissing the array of uses of fire and banning *it* because it burns. The same way a gun could take a life is the same way it can defend one. It's the same reason why police carry guns, the same reason why federal agents, who sit behind a desk most of the day, carry them. It's the same reason why our soldiers carry them into battle, and it's the same reason why I carry mine day-to-day. So many things in this world were designed for one purpose that we later discovered provided other uses than what they were originally created and intended for. But we don't say things like, "Hey! You can't use it for that. Because it was designed *only* for this." But let's face it, cars are deadly. Cars have killed scores and scores of people. A car took my cousin's life. Yet I still get into my car everyday with the understanding of what it was designed for and what it is actually capable of. I approach the gun the same way. I completely understand what it may have been initially designed for it and I'm fully aware of what it's actually capable of. Protecting my life and the ones I love.
I'm not planning to visit the US as a tourist anytime soon. It's too dangerous I'd probably be shot by a criminal or a police officer terrified at the number of people with guns.
Thank you Cenk! I'm Australian & I've lived in the USA for over a decade! I've been saying this since I've been here! we desperately need sensible gun legislation! it works in Australia!
I am from outside of the country, I am amazed about it...... We all talk about it, every time a shooting happens, we talk at work, to friends, to family, it's on our national news and radio, we all think you Americans are nuts, I am not doing you any favours by lying to you, so I will just say it, we think this is stupid in Canada, nothing makes us shake our heads in frustration more then hearing about yet another shooting in America.
Oh plenty of us think it's stupid here too. Most of us can count the number of politicians we (in our lifetime) have trusted to actually act on our & the country's best interests on one hand. 90%(ish) of Americans want logical gun control and the politicians do nothing. When a democratic republic's government is no longer obeying the will of the people - what exactly are we supposed to do at this point? We are nuts. We're fucknuts to a man.
I'm from England and every time there is a massacre we just say 'yep, not surprised'. We just can't believe America and their guns fetish, just shake our heads in disbelief
He’s spot on about what people from outside of America think about this conundrum... as a Canadian, American obsession with guns makes absolutely no sense to me
As an Australian, it makes perfect sense to me. The US is being held hostage by the gun manufacturing industry that thrives in the environment of hightened pro-gun fervor. As their revenue grows, their influence in Washington increases and they are able to exert more influence on law-making.There is no mistery.
Another thing, my first job I became a friend of this really sweet girl who was bipolar. She was older then we were, but she was greatly love because she was kind and caring. One day she was late for work and we became concerned and called her parents, but no one had seen her. We took off work looking for her and three days later she was found on the beach with a bullet in her head. Went got a gun, sat on the beach for a while according to witnesses and kill herself. People thought she was just laying on the beach sunning for three days and no one checked her. All this happened on the same day she got the gun, her illness should have prevented her from getting it.
The saddest part of this is not the victims of mass shootings past, nor the victims of the present, but the honest realisation that there are more victims to come.
His status are not representative of "Active Shooter events". If you look at each incident one would find that a large amount of "Active shoot" incidents include any incidents involving a gun on school property. This would include accidental discharge of a weapon, suicides, any crimes committed with a gun on school property.
Dear Young Turks, I sencerely hope that you will empower people in the USA with these facts and analysis to start the citizen's campaign for the abolition of the terrible gun law that enables these mass killings. The NRA must be held accountable for this too. We (I come from Slovenia, ex-Yugoslavia) are watching these happenings years and decades and can't understand why such a powerful nation is unwilling to solve this problem for the sake of their young people who are willing to shoot their peers. You must stop this terrible culture of violence with available weapons to ordinary people once and for all, if not, this problem will never be solved.
Thank you for an answer Randominternet user. You've pointed to the very important topic, the questioning of the foundations of the certain society, how it is governed, managed. If it values the constant competition to the point of survival of the fittest, we must understand that in such a society there are also the laws that enable the functioning of that kind of society. The gun law has its place in this context and yes, if people want that kind of violent society must accept also this kind of behaviour and danger to themselves: the mass killings of ordinary people against their fellow men and women. By doing nothing against this status quo, this order, you will just do nothing, change nothing. Ideological, political foundations of society must be questioned and changed, if not, there will be more innocent killings. This decision to change such a foundation is a matter of getting a broader consensus between American citizens themselves, between the conservative, liberal, progressive ones.
Thats why guns were invented, idiot. Its a distance weapon. And guess what? Military and personal combat have become orders of magnitude more survivable, because of it.
The British journalist was spot on: if nothing was done after the brutal murders of 5 and 6 y/o's, nothing will ever be done. The NRA has won, we and our children have lost.
BBC Radio 4 this morning heard excerpts from two highly respected BBC journalists who had spent some time working and reporting for the BBC in the US. One described America's attitudes to guns and, in particular, Sandy Hook as "borderline barmy". I just call it criminal.
My question is why we see mass shootings mostly at places that the shooter knows there will be no guns (no protection) how many mass shootings do you see at courthouses? Maybe because there is no guns allowed and a shooter knows he can have a field day. Also if you want guns control, I want to ask how that ban on drugs working out for us. We can't control the influx of drugs, do you think people who want guns will have anymore problem getting them than the people who get drugs.
banks and almost all places of business are gun free zones but yet no mass shootings hmmmm i wonder why that is the facts speak for themselves more guns = more gun violence.
Most of the school shootings are done by people who are either students or former students. They are not random targets chosen because they're easy; most of the time they have a personal association with the place or people in it. Other mass shootings: Texas shooter? The church is the one his in-laws and estranged wife attended. Orlando? The club was where the shooter used to cruise on the down low; men have come forward saying they had issues with him long before the shootings. San Bernadino? The shooting happened at his job.
oh and the healthcare system that will bankrupt you if you ever use it the 12 hour 7 day a week work schedule that leads to more or less parent-less children you know America has countless problems that make the gun thing seems like a lesser issue .
If everyone had a free garenteed housing, edjucation, healthcare, CLEAN water/food, and a basic income then you can have all the guns you want. You have to take away the causes of the anger that leads to shooting to stop them.
You gotta keep trying Cenk. Thank you. It's a huge shameful tragic thing that goes on in this realm in America and craven leaders need to do something because it works in many other countries without denying so-called "gun rights". Scientific American Dec. 2017 had several excellent articles about all the gun arguments, counter-arguments, and non-arguments.
To own a gun in Japan two of the steps required is a complete mental health evaluation and a complete police background check. These are just the beginning steps.
"A mental health evaluation is just absurd." WHY? my country does mental health evaluation for driving license, for teachers , policemen , firefighters , military and most employers will require it before hiring you. It's not 100% bulletprof in detecting the damaged ppl, but at least some of them ..
But, but, but.... aren't all the thoughts and prayers working? Want REAL change? STOP voting for politicians that sell their a$$e$ and souls to the highest corporate bidders. ONLY vote for candidates that refuse to take ANY corporate/industry money. That's the ONLY way anything is ever going to change for the better in the USA.
Hell, the Wild West was never the Wild West, its an invention of Hollywood. The infamous town of Tombstone had some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. You want an accurate Hollywood depiction of gun laws in the Wild West, watch Unforgiven, you turn your gun in with the Sherriff for the duration of your visit, if you don't, he comes with his deputies, beats the shit out of you and takes it from you.
Since your country has done absolutely nothing about it for so long, and the amount of guns keeps growing and growing and growing, I am afraid that sensible gun control laws would have little impact at this point, you would need not only stricter gun laws but also you would have to destroy all of the guns that are already in existence, at least the AR-15s and such, that means destroying a lot of guns, a lot of them, which would freak out the right wing and they would oppose vehemently, they would come out with the same talking points about big government taking your guns away, blah, blah, blah, even if the focus is only on specific types of guns, but it wouldn't matter, they would win, and if congress decided to do something about it, the gun control laws wouldn't be strict enough and the millions of guns that are already out there would continue to be in the hands of a lot people, and it wouldn't be long before another mass shooting happened, and of course the right wing media, the NRA, etc..., would come out screaming about how gun control laws don't work, that's why I don't think the United States can turn things around when it comes to guns, you would need to change the culture of gun ownership, the right wing propaganda, the NRA lobbying of politicians, only until all of those things are changed would gun control laws be effective for sure.
It’s true Cenk. Here in England, we are amazed by what is going on over in America. We watch in amazement at how this is just allowed to keep on happening. It’s all that’s been on the telly...just mouths wide open at how nothing ever changes. In the 90’s, after Dunblane, we banned guns and haven’t had any mass shootings in over 20 years. You don’t seem to last 20 days without a mass shooting. Absolute madness.
I haven't done anything for you to have to defend me Vile Croc! But I suppose I admire your concern... I don't need you to defend me, I have a much safer surroundings here in England!
I will never understand how people don't get this? Admitting the crazy number guns in the US is the reason for these higher frequency of mass murders doesn't automatically mean you want to ban all guns everywhere....its just being intellectually honest. It would be like a smoker still denying cigarettes are bad for them....
It's about the natural rights of human beings, not numbers. No government or person or group of people have a legitimate power to strip the rights of other individuals.
john, that's what this discussion is about. That's why there's pushback. We have already been complacent in the unlawful stripping of our rights from 1934 onward. We're done making concessions on our rights only to have more and more and more taken.
nexus1g we have to agree on basic logical and empirical facts in order to have a productive conversation. if you won't concede--as a starting point for discussion--that more guns corresponds with more gun deaths, we're wasting each other's time
Columbine was the real end of the gun debate. We did nothing. Something about Parkland coming on the heels of Vegas and Texas feels slightly different. I don’t think this issue will be ignored by the press in 2018/20.
AnOriginalUser Name Police officers in Great Britain do not routinely carry firearms. It is considerably less likely that you will be shot by someone who does not have a gun.
Perpetrators, even in Britain, have other means of using weapons to attack officers that would justify the use of firearms for self-defense. How does a police officer defend himself against someone using a broken glass bottle or a bat? It could be a domestic violence call and there certainly would be the need for it.
Canada is multicultural, still way less murder. Actually canada has 3 main divisions we could focus on, natives, english and french, but we are all just Canadians at the end of the day
Way higher numbers is islamics than USA but still rarely a problem with them, there was an islamic kid who went crazy, tried to stab a few people, but he was taken down in a snowball fight immediately. There are plenty of Canadians of African decent and they do quite well in Canada. We took them in with open arms when they escaped slavery and they don't need to respect us for it to this day because they are a part of us. We allowed them to be part of _we_ long long time ago, as fast as the underground railroad could carry them.
Last I checked, it was still common practice to include suicides in the homicide statistics. I believe that this is an attempt to manipulate the statistic. Much like how "School shootings" includes any shooting within a mile of any school, no matter the time of day, the day of the week, or the persons affected. To be clear, I am Canadian and I am for gun restrictions and licencing. What I am against is hyperbole.
Germany actually has a decently high gun ownership rate, a lot lower than the US but still there are 1.4 million gun owners in Germany according to wikipedia.
I own guns but if it became illegal to own guns in this country, I'd turn mine in. My concern is that I'd have to get in line behind all the bad guys trying to turn in their guns.
If you want to make a point out of this, I recommend people look at the relation between guns per capita/gun homicide rate per capita in Norway. Norway has more weapons per capita than most developed countries, but the some of the lowest amount of gun homicide rates. Why you say? Common sense gun laws.
In the Bond film 007 was the only person that could fire that weapon because of a print scan technology. There was a gun shop in America that sold these high teck safety guns but the owner got hate mail from some gun owners
The gun homicide rate is extremely influenced by Chicago, Los Angeles, and D.C., which are apart of some of the most gun restricted states. Without those 3 cities, the homicide rate per guns is extremely low and has dropped In homicides. Not to mention a lot of those “homicides” are in self Denfense and are justified. So if you cherry pick stats you can make any argument. You didn’t show both sides to the stats, so you just mislead a ton of viewers
Who would've thought? Guns kill. I would've never imagined that a machine designed to end the life of living things would do just that. The more you know.
We already know, it's just ignored. Mind altering drugs for the kids Gun free zones created Morale (not even religion) removed from schools Guns removed from any teaching other than evil History being watered down The Constitution not being well taught. Parents disconnecting Overload of social media
Countries that have provided healthcare, education, better wages, and other support policies for DECADES do not have as stressed or anxious populations that have little hope for better lives. THAT is more important than the number of guns. Maybe look up the homicide rate in Switzerland, also very low? Not sure what their gun ownership rates are.
Russia was on that first graph. It showed they have a lot less guns, and therefore a lot less guns violence. However, that is misleading because Russia's murder rate per million is TWICE that of America's.
Why do you say "little girl" like it's an insult? Might want to rethink that. Trump is a piece of shit, but I know a lot of little girls that have waaaaaay more integrity than that dirtbag.
In fact, it's not simply the guns. It is also the history and the culture, which have led to a misinterpretation of the 2nd amendment, which in turn has allowed the NRA's dedication to money making to flourish and seize political power.
The formulation of gun laws does not depend on the letter of the 2nd amendment, but on its interpretation, as history shows. The crucial point is: Does that amendment authorize possession of guns in the context of the people as a collective entity defending themselves against a tyrannical government, or as individuals in self-defense against other individuals? Those two fundamental lines of interpretation mark the difference between Democrats and Republicans. The correct interpretation must of course take in account the historical and sociological context at the time when that amendment was written. As to the eventual change of the 2nd amendment, it is of course possible since the Constitution itself makes provision for that in four possible ways: - Proposal by convention of states, ratification by state conventions (never used) - Proposal by convention of states, ratification by state legislatures (never used) - Proposal by Congress, ratification by state conventions (used once) - Proposal by Congress, ratification by state legislatures (used all other times)
The story that the NRA and GOPs pro gun zealots use to attack the successful Australian gun buy back over 20 years ago is that we have more deadly attacks, robberies etc etc. This is false-in fact we have less murders and suicides and most of our offences are for drunken stupidity, followed by drug offences. The largest increases are sexual assaults and domestic violence. These two offences as well as driving under the influence and King Hits which are investigated as attempted murder have our focus as a community. Home invasion is always rampant but offenders rarely have weapons while the home owner has a cricket bat or a golf club. The bikies and professional criminals have guns but they mostly use them to kill each other. Finally our gov last report state the ratio of guns in Australia = 15 people in 100. America = 89 in 100. Gov haven't checked since 2014 because guns are not a factor in our lives just like the rest of the world. Those 660,000 guns taken out peace loving citizens hands way back when did something. RIP to those who lost their lives
Dude, stop calling your audience stupid. We agree with you. It's common sense. But you are not gonna win over those with opposing views by insulting them.
what i hear more than anything else is the term "law abiding gun owners"... WHY doesn't someone point out EVERY time the fact that these mass shooters were ALSO one of those " law abiding gun owners" THE DAY BEFORE!
Jane Doe No, no they werent. SOME maybe yeh, but this florida shooter wasnt. He had cops at his house to the tune of 70 times in 4 years. Mother said hed hit her. People reported him to the FBI. He wrote online he wanted to be a pro school shooter. So no, not with this case FBI should have flagged this guy, they seriously dropped the ball. For people who have never broken a law in their life until before mass shooting, whats your idea then??? How do we stop those guys? Keep in mind only 13 percent of mass shootings are done with rifles (ar15 only being one kind) handguns 70 percent of time
Jane Doe COLUMBINE shooter Eric Harris broke laws. He had a search warrant issued for his home after threatening another student. Sherrifs never executed it. They wouldve found explosives and guns . Columbine wouldve never happened. They failed the people. You can look that up their county tried to bury that cuz it would show their incompetence. Came out 10 years later, its in any book on columbine. ALOT of these people have some sort of record. Because their paychopaths. They have antisocial personality disorder. Little crimes are usually in their history.
The problem is people who watch this entire video and dont realize its one longwinded strawaman - duh 'gun violence' cant be committed with knives. But lets be honest and talk about mass violence and dispense with the disingenuous 'advanced countries' qualifiers. Because thats only an admission that the problem is socio-economic.
Anyone that would watch the full length of this video in agreement is the problem Violence is the outward actions of people harboring evil thoughts and emotions in the heart and mind !
The consitution was written before kids had acces to AR 15's pretty sure the founding fathers would have said wtf if there was a buch of school shootings and would have probably done something about it.
Occam's Razor. Easy and limitless availability of guns means an outstanding number of gun deaths. It's not something we should just accept. We can limit the deaths by many different means. Remember, there were no semi-automatic rifles and AR-15's when they wrote the second amendment.
There were no high speed press, television, radio, Internet, when First Amendment was written. Do you want to get rid of it? BTW, when the Second Amendment was written, non of those who want to do us harm had more than muskets.
Agree that other countries with gun control laws have less gun deaths. However, a more potent force is the social stigma of guns. In the US having a gun as an adult is macho. In other countries it is childish. We need to start now on a campaign to make gun ownership socially unacceptable. Think it is impossible? What about smoking 50 years ago? People who really know about guns (for example the Israeli Defence Forces) can tell you how awful they are in the wrong place, I.e. cities. Compare the reaction of people in the UK after the Dunblane shooting with that of the US after Sandyhook. Almost identical tragedies but very different response. Makes one ashamed to be American. We can do much better and it will be led by the people not by politicians.
not really socially unacceptable, just separate guns from toxic masculinity. NRA caused this by selling AR15s as macho range toys. Guns became less about sport and hunting more about self defense against unlikely threats and prepping for doomsday. also factor is video games, not really causing violence but games like Call of Duty have made the tactical rifles more popular. Why do you think support for a ban on ARs drops with younger age groups. They grew up with these games, not watching westerns and hunting with dad.
You don't know about the people who own firearms not to be macho because they keep to themselves. Which keeping to yourself is common among conservatives.
+Dirty Red Personally, I'm laughing at the failing educational system manifesting into the downfall of the US and the realization of the prophecy of "Idiocracy".
I don't know a single person that advocates the banning of ALL guns. I hear that argument from the gun nuts all the time, but have never seen a single piece of legislation proposed that asks for that. Curious. Hell, I'm a gun owner and even I can see that regulation is the way to go.
I love this man, this documentary brings the problem on point! Less guns would reduce mass shootings etc.. Every country does have mentally ill people, why give them guns in addition? Sure there are background checks, but as you see it doesn't help enough...
Sven Leonhardt ummm here take a moment and think about what you just said because we had an assault weapons ban in 1994 and it ended in 2004 but Colombine happened when that ban was in effect
Riley Klote Because a lot of the people already had the guns, were either hiding them oder buying them on the black market were so many guns were therefore sold.
Sven Leonhardt plus banning guns wouldn't stop crime because criminals would still get them and innocent people wouldn't be able to defend themselves against criminals I own 4 AR15s and 1 AK47
This is not a documentary. This is a very biased "independent" news organization that is citing Dr. Adam Lankford's single, very flawed study, that purposefully excluded countries that would top the US in mass shootings per capita, and gave incorrect data about the countries it did include. The "Dr." refuses to provide his data, methods, or reason for refusal to any news organization or academic institution, no matter who they are with. He is a charlatan who knows his work would be discredited if properly studied.
The fact we didn’t do anything after 20 first graders were slaughtered I knew we would never do anything about it. Smh...
There is a way forward with a sensible compromise.
mickeyhynes do you (UK that is) also have the regulation that firearm must be stored unloded and seperatly so from the ammunition?
That sounds very similar to the regulations we introduced in Australia following the Port Arthur massacre.
Yes I belive they are quite common and elemental rules in guncontrol. We have about the same as well.
I belive that any automatic or semi automatic hand guns are banned but things like six shooters are legal with a diffrent licence or special licence
John,
Where do I sign up to become a Canadian. I've seen Kitsault B.C. in videos and would really like to take up residence there and leave the madness of my once great nation behind.
"we have diversity" is such a dumb argument when comparing to Britain which has just as much diversity but almost 0 gun violence.
I really have a hard time understanding the USA sometimes
Quinn Crossley me too and I live here 😩
Cyrus Wu you are still ignoring the facts. There are more GUNS not more evil people. Stupid!
elsa Grace nah, we have a problem with both. Remember, 30% pop supports the President.
Me too. 0 logic
"There's no way to prevent this from happening" - Says the only country in the world where this happens.
Ugh sick of this stupid debate.
*Americans and their childish infatuation with guns disgusts me.* Don’t care anymore, bye!
I gave up after Sandy Hook. As long as we keep allowing/voting the same politicians, nothing is gonna change.
As Cenk says, to English people like myself it seems so obvious that the number of guns is the primary cause of this epidemic, but sadly it seems many Americans would rather live in a state of denial, utterly impervious to facts and reason...
So what should we do with our Constitution then?
Oh thanks ur one of the few people who own guns.
Only around 2m guns in the u.k , 1.3m is shot guns.
Stop preaching ur bs
JAMES SCHNEIDER
Yea the majority from a online poll lmao
And if you just watch a couple Bosnianbill videos, youll see how secure those guns are. Fact is UK NEVER had a rampage shooting problem, but still, somehow, their gun crackdown still didnt fix it. But ok, lets go with it... how does having your name on a gun(registration) stop you from going on a suicide mission to kill as many people as you can?
REALLY,GO FUK YERSELF.
Here in the UK we are not only stricter about guns but we take mental health seriously. When the US blames gun violence on mental health, the only response is 'you don't take that seriously either.'
gayle hunter Mental health is still one of the most underfunded parts if the NHS.
Doodlebugdude I know, it's still miles ahead of the US
This was an excellent video and hard to argue against I think. Well done Cenk.
Also when people bring up knife crime in UK they forget one important detail. Its a lot harder to kill someone with a knife than a gun
Not if you're bruce lee - didn't think about that now did you?
For sure, Just ask all the victims of the rwandan genocide.
A machete is just a big knife and they killed 800,000 with them
Yeah they killed 800k just because of 'big knives'
not the fact that the army and police allowed it to happen/also took part
or the fact that they announced over the radio to go kill people
or the fact the rest of the world turned a blind eye
"no way to prevent this" says only country where this regularly happens
How many of these gun nuts are for pro-life?
Wait, wait, wait, so you're saying it's NOT the toasters?!
Three common threads to School Mass Shootings in U.S.
1) Shooter has connection to Gov / Military
2) Gov is alerted but does nothing to prevent it
3) Shooter is medicated / psychiatric care
YL Calif THANK YOU!!! People act like guns werent EASIER TO BUY in the 50s and 60s, couldve bought one off back of a magazine. Its gotten HARDER to buy a gun. BAR has been around since 30s, thats a very dangerous gun. Its like people dont realize they could read about nearly every single one of these shooters and why they did it. Theres a very obvious pattern and issue and it isnt guns. Its medicated and ill
Is it still too soon to talk about Sandy Hook?
There are 21,000 gun suicides per year in the US. Please folks, don't keep a gun in your home. The greatest danger is to you and your family. We will all feel episodes of despair in our lives - don't have the means of your self destruction in a shoe box in your cupboard.
Excellent point Kenny! It's well known in the mental health field that those who were suicidal but didn't have an immediate tool, usually a gun, often didn't turned to suicide again.. Great point!
If Americans didn't kill themselves with firearms they would find other means to kill themselves.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people......but the gun helps quite a lot.
"My point is is that virtually anything can be used as a tool to help making killing other people more easier."
You mean that anything can be used as a *weapon,* and that is correct.
But guns are weapons. They have no other purpose.
If you kill someone with a car, you are using it for a purpose it was not designed to achieve.
If you kill someone by firing bullets from a gun at them, you are using the gun exactly as it was designed to function.
myopic stuipd view is stupid.
Because it was designed *only* for this."
But let's face it, cars are deadly.
Joe Lovell go back
Joe Lovell Go back where you came from you fucktard.
James Chammess truth hurts? poor little boy needs his safe space! :)
Violent video games do NOT make you into a murderer!
I have 2 solutions that can help stop mass shootings, but gun lovers get so butthurt when I give out the answers!
Malik Rath Don't lie. Scream it from the mountians
I'm from the country that developed Grand Theft Auto. One mass shooting, tha't how many we've had. Know what we did? Gun control.
This will be forgotten in a week just like vegas.....
And that's the real tragedy.
dont worry there'll be another one the week after..
And Sandy Hook.
Exactly then we'll wait for the next mass killing then the cycle starts over
This might be my favorite video from the young Turks and I watch EVERY video all the way through.
I'm not entirely sure why americas mass shooting problem needs explaining to anybody not insane.
The republicans were attacked on a baseball field and still no gun control, is money worth their lives?
I'm looking at the chart like where is The US. And then u see it. Damn.
I honestly don't understand why a Childs right to life is surpassed by an adults right to own a gun in America. How did you get to this point?
“The only way to keep people from stabbing each other with knives, is to give more people more knives.” - said no one ever
We can't control the influx of drugs, do you think people who want guns will have anymore problem getting them than the people who get drugs.
banks and almost all places of business are gun free zones but yet no mass shootings hmmmm i wonder why that is the facts speak for themselves more guns = more gun violence.
the real scorptile banks have armed guards
Most of the school shootings are done by people who are either students or former students. They are not random targets chosen because they're easy; most of the time they have a personal association with the place or people in it. Other mass shootings: Texas shooter? The church is the one his in-laws and estranged wife attended. Orlando? The club was where the shooter used to cruise on the down low; men have come forward saying they had issues with him long before the shootings. San Bernadino? The shooting happened at his job.
As an Australian I cannot comprehend how the USA can be so blind. But thoughts and prayers saves lives right?... Oh yea . Smh
Jim BoSS is Boss your last name?
Pamela Boss yep, parents thought they were funny I guess.
Jim BoSS Wow, I've never met another Boss. 😊 We do have an unusual last name.
well the broken education system certainly doesn't help
oh and the healthcare system that will bankrupt you if you ever use it the 12 hour 7 day a week work schedule that leads to more or less parent-less children you know America has countless problems that make the gun thing seems like a lesser issue .
ALL military style assault rifles need to be banned pronto.
So do abortions.
And Obama care.
But the second amendment says that Billy Bob can have them.
Omg...21,000+ suicides?? Why is nothing being said about that??? WTF!
To own a gun in Japan two of the steps required is a complete mental health evaluation and a complete police background check. These are just the beginning steps.
But we value liberty over here.
"A mental health evaluation is just absurd." Actually it is common sense- something politicians lack.
Angela Siegfried Also it violates our constitution.
"A mental health evaluation is just absurd."
WHY?
my country does mental health evaluation for driving license, for teachers , policemen , firefighters , military and most employers will require it before hiring you. It's not 100% bulletprof in detecting the damaged ppl, but at least some of them ..
*Americans not violent by nature? have you not seen black Friday videos??*
We don't live in the wild wild west anymore !!!! We should overturn the 2nd amendment. No one needs to own a gun.
Hell, the Wild West was never the Wild West, its an invention of Hollywood. The infamous town of Tombstone had some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. You want an accurate Hollywood depiction of gun laws in the Wild West, watch Unforgiven, you turn your gun in with the Sherriff for the duration of your visit, if you don't, he comes with his deputies, beats the shit out of you and takes it from you.
im 10 seconds in and I hear "a school shooting every other day". Lets go 20 mins of straight up lies incoming
Cenk is right. Most of the rest of the world finds this conversation completely obvious.
I disagree, because the real problem is how willing people are to hurt each other. We have been losing value in life itself for a long time.
Absolute madness.
this year it seems to be about every three days so far
It would be a miracle if we could make it 20 days without a mass shooting. We get one nearly every day.
Vile Crocodile 🤣😂🤣 defend us from who?? France? Greenland? Holland?
I haven't done anything for you to have to defend me Vile Croc! But I suppose I admire your concern...
I don't need you to defend me, I have a much safer surroundings here in England!
Cenk, you LITERALLY just narrated a conversation I just had with someone...so frustrating.
No government or person or group of people have a legitimate power to strip the rights of other individuals.
nexus1g that's a different discussion
john, that's what this discussion is about.
What is more valuable, guns or the lives of your children?
Republicans say: Guns (and all the money that comes with 'em!).
Maybe police officers shouldn't be allowed to carry firearms, based on your logic.
Vile Crocodile Yes.
Actually canada has 3 main divisions we could focus on, natives, english and french, but we are all just Canadians at the end of the day
You mean 90% white Canada? Oh ya... they're about as diverse as a bowl of rice.
BOSS NASS Toronto is probably the most multicultural, racially diverse place on the planet. Learn something.
Yes newbranday, diversity is our strength and since we get along reasonably well, other counties (no names mentioned) should take note.
Lord Kiltridge THANK YOU!!! This 18 school shootings Cenk is stating is bullshit. And to come from a Canadian, you sir i salute!!
Thank you Cenk, as a German citizen, I totally agree!
Germany actually has a decently high gun ownership rate, a lot lower than the US but still there are 1.4 million gun owners in Germany according to wikipedia.
The argument that more guns equal fewer shootings is as ridiculous as saying that the more vehicles on the roads, the fewer the number of accidents.
The US, is a broken country. My hart, and condolences go to all of the American citizens that makes up the US poplus.
I own guns but if it became illegal to own guns in this country, I'd turn mine in. My concern is that I'd have to get in line behind all the bad guys trying to turn in their guns.
Amos Soma Not surprised that you would make such a statement.
Control and restrict the sale of all ammunition, gun powder, casings, lead, caps. Give them all the guns they want.
If you want to make a point out of this, I recommend people look at the relation between guns per capita/gun homicide rate per capita in Norway. Norway has more weapons per capita than most developed countries, but the some of the lowest amount of gun homicide rates. Why you say? Common sense gun laws.
he speaks facts even if you disagree
In the Bond film 007 was the only person that could fire that weapon because of a print scan technology. There was a gun shop in America that sold these high teck safety guns but the owner got hate mail from some gun owners
Not just hatemail, new jersey banned the sale of them. they sell bump stocks, and ban smart guns
What about Switzerland? They have a very high gun ownership rate and a very low homicide rate..
Free Living if you take the whole world (not just the certain pool countries cenk pulled from) and adjust for capita, US is 11th in the world
stephen Toth again that is with those 3 “outlier cities”. Which really up the homicide rate
Who would've thought? Guns kill.
I would've never imagined that a machine designed to end the life of living things would do just that. The more you know.
is it not time to look at what changed over time for mass shootings to become so out of control.
Rich Poythress i mean look at mass shootings holistically
We already know, it's just ignored.
Mind altering drugs for the kids
Gun free zones created
Morale (not even religion) removed from schools
Guns removed from any teaching other than evil
History being watered down
The Constitution not being well taught.
Parents disconnecting
Overload of social media
Countries that have provided healthcare, education, better wages, and other support policies for DECADES do not have as stressed or anxious populations that have little hope for better lives. THAT is more important than the number of guns. Maybe look up the homicide rate in Switzerland, also very low? Not sure what their gun ownership rates are.
Russia was on that first graph. It showed they have a lot less guns, and therefore a lot less guns violence. However, that is misleading because Russia's murder rate per million is TWICE that of America's.
IAmKrazyKyle
Didnt know that
Trump says its Obama's fault.ok lets say it was hes been gone 1yr 2 months what have you done little girl
Why do you say "little girl" like it's an insult? Might want to rethink that. Trump is a piece of shit, but I know a lot of little girls that have waaaaaay more integrity than that dirtbag.
Tyler Rue true
No guns. No gun deaths.
rencrow a white supremacist can't mass shoot without a gun. Let's get rid of both just to be double safe.
Just too simple here for people to obtain guns.
In fact, it's not simply the guns. It is also the history and the culture, which have led to a misinterpretation of the 2nd amendment, which in turn has allowed the NRA's dedication to money making to flourish and seize political power.
Joe Maybe you should read the second amendment. No matter how much you turn it. It shall not be infringed upon. READ IT AGAIN
As to the eventual change of the 2nd amendment, it is of course possible since the Constitution itself makes provision for that in four possible ways:
- Proposal by convention of states, ratification by state conventions (never used)
- Proposal by convention of states, ratification by state legislatures (never used)
- Proposal by Congress, ratification by state conventions (used once)
- Proposal by Congress, ratification by state legislatures (used all other times)
say what you want about Hillary Clinton she would have done something about this
Trumpanzee Gun lovers are triggered in the comments! 😆
18 mass shootings so far this year. America #1.
Number one in mass shooting. LOL!
Actually 43!
You're speaking facts to people that deal in feelings
any United States we got the most sociopaths per square inch.
True,
Dude, stop calling your audience stupid. We agree with you. It's common sense. But you are not gonna win over those with opposing views by insulting them.
He's not calling those of us watching stupid. He's calling more to lawmakers.
what i hear more than anything else is the term "law abiding gun owners"...
Little crimes are usually in their history.
i wish there was a way to turn this into an article we could copy + use in debating gun lovers.
If anyone watches this entire video and still believes guns aren’t the problem, there is no saving them. It’s a lost cause
The problem is the mentally-ill person holding the gun. Please look a little closer.
Anyone that would watch the full length of this video in agreement is the problem
Violence is the outward actions of people harboring evil thoughts and emotions in the heart and mind !
Call me stupid if you need to but: What is so wrong with gun regulations?
Snow One it’s wrong because it is unconstitutional.
Would that mean that you value the constitution more than the lives of the American people?
Yes Tony, lives are protected because of Constitution.
Ben C. Then change the constitution you guys have the bigest army in histoy no one is invading you
The consitution was written before kids had acces to AR 15's pretty sure the founding fathers would have said wtf if there was a buch of school shootings and would have probably done something about it.
It must be so frustrating that this is actually a debate in the US.
John Kerr gun ownership is socially unacceptable; it’s called the far and radical left.
John Kerr None of the people I know who own guns do it to be macho, they own it for sport, hunting, or just collect them as a hobby
I think it's too late for america.
Keep your guns, enjoy the accompanying problems while we in the rest of the world laugh at you.
Razar Campbell what are you laughing at and from where?
+Dirty Red Personally, I'm laughing at the failing educational system manifesting into the downfall of the US and the realization of the prophecy of "Idiocracy".
Make sure your capris aren't to tight, you might blow out a button doing so.
Its so silly when people die, isn't it. It's a bad thing and therefore funny.
Razar Campbell We will enjoy being the best country in the world while you sit back and wish you could come here.
We literally comment on how crazy Americans are at work every time one of these shootings happen
Cue the triggered gun nuts...
I don't know a single person that advocates the banning of ALL guns. I hear that argument from the gun nuts all the time, but have never seen a single piece of legislation proposed that asks for that. Curious.
Hell, I'm a gun owner and even I can see that regulation is the way to go.
we gave to get their guns and give them to CAIR,ANTIFA,BLM etc. And then send them to camps so we can have fun with them hence the name fun camps.
+Larry McCrae Their other tactic is to mispell words like gave instead of have I'm totally on to you🖕
This shooting will be known as the valentines day massacre
Jason Smith this is the 2nd valentine's massacre
1. Las Vegas
2. Texas
3. Now this.....
What has the world come to?!!!!!!!!!
4 of the worst 6 in the last 2 years. Vegas, Pulse, Texas, yesterday
And yet gun owners and advocates still argue for more guns. :-/
There's a massive lack of Switzerland on that chart.
Sven Leonhardt no they asked a friend to get the guns then they were transferred to the shooters that was the illegal part
