Lisa went to Korea with nothing but "annyeonghaseyo" in her vocabulary and she wasn't permitted to speak in English either so she can learn Korean fast.

I like how you don’t talk over the content or try to flex your knowledge like most reactors introducing kpop to non-fans. Great reactions

Thanks! We had complaints in the past of some of our other guests that talked too much over the content. So now I typically try to brief them beforehand to pause if they have a lot to say. Otherwise small comments are fine as long as the flow of the song still keeps going. I just hate it when a song is paused a million times during a video. Plus I think Katie was just vibing with the music. Now that I'm editing all her videos, we didn't really discuss until after the viewings. And I think that makes it more enjoyable for people to watch.
And yes - we are not experts! And we're definitely learning as we go, so I'm always open to feedback and correction! This world is still very new to me and I only know a little bit more than Elaine. But our guests are usually brand spanking new to k-pop. They usually know nothing or very little about it all. And so our channel just kind of evolved into this thing where we're introducing it to others ... but yeah - not an expert!
I can't wait to do the BP documentary and the Rise of Bangtan series with Elaine and Allison. That's going to be fun.
      Thanks for watching!

Three members are Korean and one is Thai. Jisoo is Korean. She was born and grew up in South Korea. Jennie is Korean and was born in Korea. She went to New Zealand to study at the age of 10 and went back to South Korea at age of 14 or 15 and became a trainee. Rosé was born in NZ and grew up in Australia but both of her parents are Korean. Lisa is from Thailand. She left her country to became a trainee at the age of 14. You can check their documentary entitled “Light Up The Sky” from Netflix and The Revolution: A Story of BLACKPINK by The Asian Theory. Thanks!

First of all tysm for kept coming back for our PINKS and i'm glad to see you guys genuinely vibin with their performance on those 3 songs but gotta be honest i'm also have such a different take when it comes to a proper concept for an initial reaction...
Maybe i'm just being too nitpicky but i do wish that you guys could have done the studio-recording version for both "LOVE TO HATE ME" and "YOU NEVER KNOW" since those live performance was fairly quite different from the original release (especially on the whole part of the instrumentation) and i'm pretty sure that a meaningful b-side such as "YOU NEVER KNOW" would be hittin a lot harder only if you fully understand on what they were saying through the entire song, so yeah for now other than "WHISTLE" maybe i won't really call this video as a proper initial reaction...
therefore i'm just gonna leave some direct links toward these special format called 'color coded lyrics' in case if you guys still gonna do a proper visit to the studio-version for those b-side tracks:
    - LOVE TO HATE ME (color coded lyrics) : ua-cam.com/video/VE3i4_3fdA0/v-deo.html
    - YOU NEVER KNOW (color coded lyrics) : ua-cam.com/video/Q9rEE-6Tafo/v-deo.html
but if by reacting to those live performance was completely enough for fulfilling a first-time experience toward those 2 b-side tracks then just tell me ASAP so i'd instantly change my upcoming suggestion into the different ones 😇🙏🖤💗

Hi. Thanks for your input. We love reacting to BLACKPINK! We've wanted to do more of their songs but tbh, they don't have an extensive catalog like BTS. And so I've been trying to pace out their content also while introducing other bands such as Twice, Itzy, and TXT.
As for the reasons why I chose this pairing for this first reaction with Katie - if you look back at the new sessions that I do with each guest, I like to give them a taste with a short mini concert. Festa Room Live with Elaine before the LA Concert, NPR Tiny Desk with Allison, and Armypedia with Rachel, and MTV Unplugged with Luke (coming up soon). I didn't want it to all be BTS but after scouring the web, I can't really find any acoustic sets from anyone else. Except for this one medley from BLACKPINK during their online concert. Although it's only two songs instead of three (most of the above samples were three songs). That's why I added Whistle before the medley.
Two reasons why I do this - to give the listener the ability to hear real vocals and for them to watch them perform live and see their stage presence (both very important details for Elaine since she is a singer/songwriter). We're all in the industry and so I take into account where they are in the industry when I select their videos. You can't really see that with color coded lyrics. The only time I really use those is when there isn't a MV and/or I really want them to read the lyrics (ie. Hip Hop Lover and Ddaeng and eventually the Cyphers). Those were all meant to be paired with live performances but Hip Hop Lover didn't have time because our discussion afterward went too long and Luis had to go.
Katie is a motion graphics artist and so I hand selected her MV's because they are chock full of motion graphics. Luke is Elaine's songwriting partner and so I lined up songs that are collabs for him. I have a dancer on deck and I want him to react to the Lilifilms. And a DJ so he can do all the Steve Aoki and Diplo kpop mixes.
So that's why I chose these songs and these music videos. Plus the detail of things being closed captioned - that plays a strong factor in the videos that I chose. But I also listen to everyone's comments and feedback and take that into consideration.
I hope that clears things up. Feel free to send me more BLACKPINK suggestions. And/or if they have other tiny desk type concerts out there that I don't know about, please send them my way!
      Thanks for watching!

@@k-popcrashcourse Good Lord, thank you so much for sending me about this entire clarity, cuz tbh previously i'm kinda confused while being curious about the concept of this channel, but now i must say that i'm completely aware about why everytime there's always a new guest for each different post...
therefore my initial comment just remains as a basic misunderstanding so i'm sorry if i sounds like a bit too hasty about my own preference and also for being too clueless toward anything that you did for the community on this channel...
as for my personal recommendation maybe i'm just gonna go with several different type of BP's live performances (group, solo nor collab) :
      - SURE THING COVER (not sure if it's counted as a tiny-desk type of performance but pretty much you can clearly hear their live voice) : ua-cam.com/video/_7TMluHVx4Y/v-deo.html
      - DDU-DU-DDU-DU remix version live at TOKYO DOME : ua-cam.com/video/EaWyG6vt7do/v-deo.html
      More melodic performances :
      - JISOO - YUKI NO HANA (with CC/subtitles) : ua-cam.com/video/fjKRglnBr7A/v-deo.html
      - A trio performance by ROSÉ x ONEW (from SHINee) x LEE SU-HYUN (from AKMU) while they covering "IF I AIN'T GOT YOU" : ua-cam.com/video/V1gTGrL53aE/v-deo.html
      - JENNIE's cover over "CAN'T TAKE MY EYES OF YOU [original by Frankie Valli] : ua-cam.com/video/G9pSNEmyztI/v-deo.html
      - LISA x ROSÉ while they covering "L.O.V.E" [original by Nat King Cole] : ua-cam.com/video/yxtIoTZ4ua8/v-deo.html
      hope u enjoy it 😎🙏🖤💗

South Korea does discriminate against foreigners. But foreigners in the sense of the person themselves not being Korean. So the fact that Jennie was born and raised in New Zealand doesn’t matter to them, the racism is even worse for those that are not East Asian or white. Like for example Momo from twice doesn’t get as much hate for being Japanese but she does get some hate. But because Lisa is from Thailand (which is in south east Asia) she receives the most discrimination/ racism than those from east Asia. Like Lisa has to pay foreigner taxes which means the amount she gets paid is less than it would be if she were Korean. Yg as a company didn’t promote her solo in Korea and they gave her little to no promotions for her songs. Like they only let her go to 1 music show and made her have fanmeets for the rest of her short 2 week promotion period. She’s been cured at in public, received death threats, and Koreans would constantly pick on her. It got so bad at one point that BamBam and Jackson Wang both publicly showed her support for her. Jennie gave a speech when they got to Thailand for their world tour and told the audience “It’s ok, we will take care of Lisa”.

Despite the “k-pop industry” topic, I think one of the problems is neo-orientalism among westerners shaping them to believe in that way.

    • @k-popcrashcourse
      @k-popcrashcourse  2 роки тому

Hi! Thanks for your response. Tbh I’m not sure how I feel about a lot of how westerners approach things - me, included. I’m still trying to dissect and understand it myself before breaking into a deeper discussion of those nuances and assumptions. It takes a lot of research and time for people to understand where we get things wrong. And the US is slowly (very slowly) getting there. It’s just hard to confront it sometimes but I think it’s needed.
Any other insights you might have, I’d love to hear them. Just so I can educate myself more!

@@k-popcrashcourse hi there, sorry I did not noticed the reply and this is soooo late now. But I love to have good constructive opinions about things as well!. Its actually also just my assumption, I tend to feels like at some level of GP/Audience in the west they kinda have this mindset about east-asia/ SEA as technology advancement countries with low moral compass/social appropriation which is still true in some territories tho but none the less they can not use this argument to assume or help themselves feels better. Its logically how your mind works when being taught all life they are superior(more development per se) hence American dream, colonial era Etc. then when things starting to turn other way round with east Asia countries specially. They will have this urge to say/think that “well at least we our society still care about moral compassion, human rights, work life balance, better mindset and etc” in order to help them still appreciate themselves emotionally and feels important in a way or “holding on the privileges”. When not all asian countries are like that infact some are actually have higher ground in some perspective/POV. That’s called “orientalism” it was with food then pop culture before, now with music industry with topic that actually very easy to assume to be bad with first glimpse without looking into like “human rights/over worked/training” for example. I wont say these thought will be one type of racist. More like people protecting their intergrity which is fine! Just which ppl would put the guard down and actually have more moral justice. its quite funny to think when defining the perception as “the far left is the new right” , “we’re superior in terms of society development but we also look down on things we don’t quiet understand because our the fear of loosing our own integrity” , “ we’re superior like liberals but we also have base criticism in conservatives way” although I’m not saying any of them are bad. Just a funny exemption.

Strange choice of songs to introduce someone to BLACKPINK, why wouldn't you start with their biggest hits, like DDU-DU DDU-DU, HOW YOU LIKE THAT or KILL THIS LOVE?

    • @k-popcrashcourse
      @k-popcrashcourse  2 роки тому +1

Hi! Thanks for watching. We actually already did reactions with E + Allison to both HOW YOU LIKE THAT (ua-cam.com/video/zCMgxY8JdHg/v-deo.html) and KILL THIS LOVE (ua-cam.com/video/cBcqMpyMsUM/v-deo.html). DDU DU DDU DU was scheduled for later in the evening with Katie but she had to leave earlier than expected.
The reason that I chose these songs in that order was because I gave Allison the bangers (KTL was new for both her and E, HYLT was new to just Allison). I did WHISTLE and the live performance medley because that's how I typically do most of my reaction videos - a MV and a live performance.
I eventually wanted to get to DDU DU DDU DU and explain how that song was their first one to blow up and that they grew into this giant global sensation with only nine songs ... but we ran out of time.
I hope that answers your question. Feel free to check out those videos with Allison. Her reactions are golden.
