I've said it many times before, I miss Core Design and its great team.
This beautiful presentation brings back memories of many wonderful hours not only with TR 3.
Back then it was still a real adventure to travel with Lara through strange, exotic worlds.
I think something like the classic TR Games 1-6 with their incomparable atmosphere could only come from England,
because it also has something to do with history and culture.
    Thank you for sharing !

The level that I liked the most of Tomb Raider 3 since I played it for the first time there in 1998, was London Thames Wharf, to this day I am still amazed by the ambient sound and that moon in the distance, worth contemplating!!!

I used to sit back before going to the passport option just to listen to the tr3 theme. Winston still gives the creeps but I didn’t lock him in the fridge. When he follows you where the weapons are he can’t get out of there anymore. Which was awesome.

@@Mondoshawn Definitely, I feel in a way with less advanced technology they had to be really creative and intelligent with how they used sound, graphics and lighting to make something interesting immersive. I think tr3 was such an ambitious project and striving to be the most visually stunning game possible for the time, they wanted to make huge waterfalls, rapids, jungles, continuous scenery etc but at the time all they had was the grid system and blocks, and that just made the game look so cubic and blocky, in no way am I criticising the work put in to make this game as I know the most effort possible was made (under time constraints too which must have been so pressurising), i guess my point is just imagine what tr3 would have looked like if it was made around 2006 (Legend had a huge waterfall in the Ghana level)

Will Murphy A good way to measure it would be to look at Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition (not that one. The cancelled _good_ one). A lot of the classic areas were redone completely while still following the same basic layout as the old game, using the Free Running engine which I read somewhere back in 2008 or so was meant to be a fully fixed Angel of Darkness one:
The wolf bridge room in Caves has iced over ships like Rise of the Tomb Raider in small docks below the bridges
City of Vilcabamba looks like the original, but has more detail in the walls and floor, giving the impression that the "huts" are more clearly carved directly out of the cave walls, making the city less traditionally village like on purpose due to the location
The bridge in Lost Valley is broken because the T-Rex destroys it trying to get at some raptors. Not only does it have a true skybox but there's a volcano in the distance, the waterfall area has more streams leading both in and out of the cave and the two seem to be connected by a new area called The Lost Plateau.
The Coliseum is round and outdoors on a hidden plateau
The Cistern & Tihocan sewers have waterfalls in places where it makes sense for water to flow e.g. the exit to the first rusty key and the final slide to the tomb itself
Some places like the Parthenon in Palace Midas and Tihocan's Tomb have completely redesigned interiors. The latter even has a giant Medusa statue that looks like it's from Akumajou Dracula X: Rondo of Blood but 3D. The centaurs are missing from the screenshots so they either weren't implemented or the Medusa statue was going to come alive as the new Greece boss next to Pierre
Khamoon from the city to the obelisk has better lighting and more detail in the walls.
The Sanctuary Sphinx room has a different shape with lava surrounding it in a moat, a puzzle that involves flooding the Sphinx area with that lava and the statue itself is redesigned to look like something from TR4 crossed with Angel of Darkness
Natla's Mines have geometry and textures, especially the lava falls, that make it look and feel like The Lost Domain or Sanctuary of the Flame in Angel of Darkness, with more mining equipment, catwalks and terminals around the place. A major change is that it's retconned as an old German WW2 outpost that Natla merely reopens.
And then there's Atlantis itself: other than the gorier textures and incisor teeth springing up from the floor in places, we have in the main lava shaft lava falls, spikes or teeth on the walls and what I first thought was a huge column held up by chains, but while I was right about the chains, I later saw the "column" was actually a titanic brain stem connected to a giant brain just outside the original scion room, with a computer terminal on the catwalks above it as a user interface! This is above a sloped funnel that connects to the lava shaft below. I couldn't find the torso boss arena so I could only guess the "brain" may have been intended as the new egg for it.
A lot more mutants were going to appear in Atlantis besides returning favourites, going by concept art. They all look like the lab experiments they're supposed to be.
Then there's Escape from Atlantis, where I can only assume they would have gone balls out architecture wise and ditched even the minute references to the old grid design entirely, becoming full Angel of Darkness with better controls.
So looking at that, we've just got to imagine what Tomb Raider 3 would look like if Core Design gave it the TRAE treatment too.

Tomb Raider 3 and Half Life 1 (CD version via Half Life Generation with Opposing Force) are why I love old game engine graphics, with my favourite 2000s ones being Shadow the Hedgehog (Xbox version), Halo 1+2 (Xbox Classic versions), Half Life 2 and Mirror's Edge 1.
Tomb Raider 3's graphics strike the fine line between cartoonish and photorealistic perfectly, looking like Solaris himself crafted the world with toy building blocks and literal atomic paint. (as in, the atoms that make up the textures real world material counterparts, not radioactive paint from clocks).
At times, It feels like I'm really there in kayaking down a mountain river, sneaking around in city air ducts in the dead of night, or playing in the snow and climbing little mountains of it like I did in the street as a kid, (with the odd boogeyboarding down the golf course) at one moment, and in another it feels like I'm reliving the events of Tom & Jerry: The Movie (the original i.e. the only good one) such as when I'm breaking out of Area 51, heading along a river to find a cabin in the coastal Antarctic mountains of Ross Archipelago and killing the bad guy in a fiery showdown at the end while barely escaping with my life.
This game put London, kayaking (especially white water), aquajet driving (real life UPVs), and a holiday around Antarctica on my bucket list, especially Mt Erebus where the meteorite landed in the game, and Death Valley further inland, no relation to the Nevada Desert one. (also called Dry Valley)
