    Smyslov struck me as a paradox. He'd play the Smyslov(-Karpov) line in the Caro Kann, but play the Fantasy variation as White. And he chose experimental methods to disrupt Botvinnik's prep, as did Tal. Yet his play is a model of lucidity and harmony, and he was at home in Rook endings. Btw, Jesse's preamble about finding players whose style accords with your own 'values' makes good sense.
