  • I'm Nicole and I live in a 1973 Volkswagen Bus. This is a more detailed look at the rebuild of my van interior. The vw bus is a T2 Transporter model -- so I converted it into a camper by taking out the middle row, creating more storage, and rebuilding after bringing the van down to bare metal to get rid of surface rust. I tried to keep everything simple, practical and DIY style. I wanted to keep the colors light and airy so the sailcloth, laminate hardwoods, white cabinet, headliner, and panels could blend and function well. I hope you find this van build informative and useful!

    If were me.....I would look into getting a pop up thing installed so you could stand up. Love those VW vans!!!! I could live in one for sure. Talk about a classic from the past!!!

    Hello, I'm Brazilian and the VW T2 were manufactured here until 2013, come to Brazil and stock up on parts, after all it's cheaper here because of the exchange rate between the dollar and the real... I'm currently building a mini camper With a 2006 water-cooled VW T2C, one day I intend to travel the world with it...

      That sounds like a trip of a lifetime to be had! Good luck on the build out. I'd never thought of that -- the think is the parts are big so shipping them back might be the same cost as importing a vehicle haha

      with the value of the dollar I am seriously thinking about collecting it so that one day I can sell the VW T2 Kombi, there are a lot of people who do this and earn very well, here in Brazil and Latin America you can find a lot of very cheap old cars, there was a couple who were from vw t2b 2004 to the united states and sold the kombi for 39 thousand dollars@@Nikkicolesurfer

    Nice bus. I have a 1973 Westy that I travel all over with. Nice layout of your cabinets and stuff. So far I have put in a new clutch and rebuilt transmission. Completely redid the braking system along with normal maintenance. It just makes me smile to drive it. Best wishes and happy trails.

    Hey Nicole. Great idea on the internal racks for your boards. Better security than strapped to the roof. Thanks for the video. My 67 bus will be getting some of your ideas.

    Towards the end of the video the music got really loud. I’m hard of hearing so it was hard to hear you over it. Not sure if you can edit down the music in future videos.

    Awesome renovations. I have a 73 Bus as well & looking for different ideas for my interior. How did you do the headliner? BTW... I upgraded my shifter to the Bug-Tech Big John Shifter. I HIGHLY recommend it.

    Interesting video. For heat Chinese diesel heaters are cheap and why do you need protein powder, you're not body builder, so can get enough protein from food?

      The thing is I make really simple foods most of the time and when I need something filling and fast that's not junk food - protein shake it is.

    What is insurance for this guy? Like ballpark? I'm looking into getting one and I want to make sure it's not a million dollars

    • @Nikkicolesurfer
      @Nikkicolesurfer  3 роки тому

      Just now manually seeing this question; for some reason it didn't alert about comment: while restoring I had bare minimal with geico and now I do state farm antique auto; really good insurance with state farm is like 600 a year I think; that's an inclusive of anything and everything so you can get away with a decent policy for less. You have to get a appraisal so it could vary based on what year and restoration condition.

    WOW nice Job, Nicole. I like it. I bought a new 1973 VW Window Van and redid the inside. Insulate styrofoam and paneling and good quality berber carpet. Also installed a 3 seater out of a Boeing 707 that I made an easy in and out. Question? Looking ate the bumpers on your van are from a 1972 VW . I drove mine for 16 years . One engine change .

    • @Nikkicolesurfer
      @Nikkicolesurfer  4 роки тому +1

      So funny story, the rear bumper is actually a front bumper upside down; I added a new hole on each side to install. By the time I figured it out, I already had two front bumpers so I just made it work. The rear one was in the front but not properly on there; so, I assumed it to be a rear bumper and got the front bumper.

      @@Nikkicolesurfer Oh I am not surprised you figured that one out. Your inside had much thought of detail. I was in a band for a while and the VW window van carried all our equipment except for the drums. I polished the Van spring and fall with Nu Finish, Peeps would not believe it was the original paint, Africa Blue. I so miss my Kombi

    Is the exterior of the bus painted in rust oleum?

    • @Nikkicolesurfer
      @Nikkicolesurfer  4 роки тому +1

      I actually got the exterior paint at CarQuest Auto; I chose it from the 1972 vw handbook they had in store; they mixed paint there. After I sanded with a hand planer, then by hand with differing grades of sandpaper with probably 4-5 layer of primer which was rustoleum. The interior panting is the rustoleum paint in an off white cream color I got from a hardware store.

    • @vistable6006
      @vistable6006 4 роки тому

      I was about to say that if you did the exterior in rust oleum it looks pretty good for a rattle can. Just curious, how much did it cost you to just get the exterior sprayed?

    • @Nikkicolesurfer
      @Nikkicolesurfer  4 роки тому +1

      @@vistable6006 The spray including cost of paint was 1500, which was half the cost Mako tried to quote me for, and was done by a guy and his daughter who work on cars and own a small shop so supporting local.

      I initially made curtains out of sailcloth but later opted for Walmart blackout curtains hung sideways with metal magnet clip holders and store them in the closet during the day.

    • @Nikkicolesurfer
      @Nikkicolesurfer  3 роки тому +1

      @@joelleswift4093 A few places: online like bay, ask around call/email yacht clubs or sailing centers in your area (they replenish sails on center boats or may know someone), sailing group pages on Facebook (sailors would probably sell old or torn sails that can be repurposed)
