The រ _r_ found in final position within a syllable is silent in Standard Khmer pronunciation, but it is still written because Khmer orthography reflects the original and more ancient pronunciation. This final consonant once was pronounced in the exact same way as its counterpart at the beginning of a syllable. Today, even if in Standard Khmer is simply silent, in other dialects of Khmer, especially Northern Khmer (or Surin Khmer), the final រ _r_ is maintained, e.g. Standard Khmer ពីរ is read /piː/, however in Surin Khmer it is still pronounced as /piːr/, also the very name ខ្មែរ is /khmae/ in Standard Khmer, but in Surin Khmer they read it as /khmɛːr/. Finally, Sanskrit loanwords having a final _r_ or a final syllable containing an _r_ are also written in Khmer with a final រ _r_ , like the word សិរ “cockscomb, crest, head” (borrowed from Sanskrit शिर _śira_ “head”) which nowadays is read as /seː/, but we know that the final _r_ was once pronounced something like /*ser/ because of its etymology (the original Sanskrit word has an _r_ in its final syllable).
