That great voice at the end is Fłoor Jansen from Nightwish. She is married to Hannes van Dahl, Sabaton's drummer. That's the guy blown by the granade at the beginning.
On WW1 it was not just machine guns, but artillery that was new. Artillery pieces with non-leaking hydraulic shock absorbers were pretty new invention, and allowed shellings like never seen before. Like 2.2 million high calibers shells to prepare for just one attack. Such scale had not been seen before, but not also seen after it.
A christmas truce in only 1914. Only like 4 or so months after the war started too, technically. Im pretty sure franz ferdinand was killed in the summer, like july, but the first battles were in august
I heard a quote said once a long time ago that the reason the death tolls were so high with very little ground gained was because the commanders were too old and using old tactics with new tech, like the machine guns. And meanwhile the soldiers were too young to know any better.
It's one of those moments that still give me some hope in the future of humanity... Try No Bullets Fly (animated story version of course!) for another story that just baffles but at the same time instills hope
Sabaton hired a Czech production company that had previously done only movies for this video, and the results are obvious from the high quality and excellent composition. Joakim and Par worked on this song for a number of years since they felt the story was so important. Joakim said this song is actually structured as a waltz with the opening similar to "Carol of the Bells" but the major and minor are reversed. The story highlights the facts that most soldiers understand that the opposing forces are the same as they are, fighting for their country. The objects you thought were tanks defenses at that time were actually there to prevent cavalry charges (the first tanks engagement was in Feb, 1915) although they were used more as supports of barb wire since trench warfare had made cavalry charges impossible. The cross is a replica of the actual cross outside Ypres. Great reaction, keep rocking Sabaton.
The objects are called Czech hedgehogs and are specifically designed in the early 1930's to counter the German tank threat. Build out of thick metal beams as to not easily be removed or run over and crushed. The beams are positioned in such a way that no matter how you place them down or if you drive over them, they always work. This was the special thing about them, easily built and always effective. they were first used in the Sudetenland before Germany annexed it in 1938 with Munich agreement. The cavalry traps you described would have most likely been made out of wood since its a better suited material for the task and of less strategic value and build with 4 poles tied up in an hourglass-like way. The first time tanks were used in battle was at Fler-Courcelette during the battle of the Somme in September 1916 and the first tank on tank engagement happened on the 24 of April 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux.
Impressed by your historical knowkedge...you might have no idea but, Americans aren't always well-read, and I want to say I feel proud of you! (I'm a grandma-aged metal head) The piano melody is indeed, Carol Of The Bells...but played backwards. The melody is also a waltz! There are so many fantastic Sabaton songs! See their animated story video for Night Witches...its a bit heavier, but a powerful story! The big blonde in the silly mustache w the guitar...is Sabaton lead guitarist Tommy Johansson. Here's a gift for you... Tommy is not only a multi-instrumentalist w his own solo band, Majestica...he also has the voice of a smooth power metal God! No joke...this is how ppl are introduced to Tommy, thru Sabaton! He has a YT channel full of amazing covers that he plays and sings. There is no real way to prepare you for Tommy, (bc you're gonna freak out a little!) but I really hope you'll add him to your wheel...check out his cover of Steelheart's She's Gone.
Yes, you are right. The soldiers after the day of truce didn't want to fight foe soldiers they know and they refused or shot up. They were punished or relocated. You've mentioned chemical weapons. Sabaton's got a few songs about it as they sing a lot about wwI. They're: The Attack of The Dead Men, Final Solution and Father.
A follow up song from Sabaton would be “ the price of a mile” and they have a history episode of this song also. Or “No bullets fly” or “Night Witches”
What I liked most about your reaction is that you showed the most versatile and best singer of this time Floor Jansen the respect she deserves. Many other reactors do not listen to her in the credits, but end the video at this point. For this you have earned a subscription from me. As Martine did in her commentary, I would also like to recommend the band Nightwish with the terrific Floor Jansen. The song 'Storytime' is the perfect introduction to a unique music journey as only Nightwish has to offer. Best regards,Kelsea - Nightwish Army Germany
Thank you for subscribing!! Surprised other reactors would end the video early, her singing voice was perfect and ended the video beautifully. Added Storytime to the wheel :)
Guys, the way you react to the videos is wonderful. The insight to the history of it and the sincerity is wonderful and very refreshing. The lady that sings in the end of this videomis Floor Janssen, singer of Nightwish and wife to Hannes VAN Dahl who is the drummer of Sabaton and the guy who came out of the trenches first. I hope you will react to more Sabaton songs and spread the word of their fantastic music and the history that just cannot be forgotten. I suggest soldier of heaven next or father, which is a song about Fritz Haber. He invented ammonium nitrate and helped to feed the world with the use as fertiliser but on the other hand used as poison gas in WW1 and killed thousands of soldiers. Please keep doing what you do. You are great
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for letting us know about Floor Jansen, pretty interesting and fun detail that she is the wife of the drummer for Sabaton! We will definitely be watching more of their music. Added Soldier of Heaven and Father to the wheel :)
One correction those weren't tank traps, tanks didn't arrive in the battlefield until 1917. What you saw are just simple fence posts used to hold up the barb wire
The ball: I understand some English(?) troops had a tradition, that on battlefield the first wave advanced with a football and kicked it to the enemy side before proceeding to use weapons. And they tried to replicate this in WW1, too. But meanwhile machine guns and modern artillery hard been invented, so they tried this trick several times and every time everyone was slaughtered. So it is possible they indeed *had* footballs laying somewhere in 1914.
The soldiers shoot High after The event, later relocated.... The outro song by Floor Jansen married to the drummer in Sabaton. Thax. Greetings from nwAse Sweden
You two really make a great reaction team. And you do know quite a bit of history as well, more than you seem to be aware of yourselves, haha. Lovely reaction to one of their absolute best songs. Really glad you guys found Sabaton and I'm glad I found your channel. Listening to your discussions and thoughts is really nice.
this be my fav sabaton song and it be hella sexy when joakim hard rolls his R's and par their bass player be such a smol fella and his beard be epic l felt bad that they murdered the piano the 1st fella that left the trench be hannes their drummer the 2nd be chris their rythem guitarist the soprano at the end be hannes's wife floor jansen the lead singer of nightwish
Great Reaction to this amazing work of art. As a veteran myself I can attest that Sabaton has perfectly captured that brotherhood of arms that all who have served feel. This song and video always gets me emotional. Especially when Floor comes to sing those beautiful epic vocals over the ending credits I kind of loose it. Floor is the wife of Sabaton's drummer, Hannes van Dahl. He was the first soldier to step out of the trenches. She is the incredibly talented and powerful singer for symphonic metal band Nightwish. Nightwish is an amazing band and hugely popular around the world yet practically unknown here in the states. You should add them to your wheel. I saw Sabaton live last fall and when they got to that point where the music drops away and there is just the chorus the whole theater was singing at the top of their lungs.
Please look at Nightwish Wakcen concert 2013 Ghost Love Score. You'll hear the full power of Floor Jansen's voice. And do more Sabaton. They are great❤
I've seen this reacted to over 100 times. And that is not an exaggeration. This was one of the best I've seen so far. You have much appreciated insights and knowledge. Both on the event and the music and film construction. It's HIGHLY appreciated from a Sabaton fan. Note also (as you did) that Sabaton NEVER takes sides in the events. They describes Nazis in the same way as allies. They believe that every man sent out in war is there of patriotism or force. Therefore they are equal. Much Love to you and Ukraine 💙💛💙🌻🌻🌻
WOW! Thank you for the compliment!! We really enjoyed what we have heard from Sabaton so far, and the fact that these songs cover real history makes it all the more intriguing! Much love and hopefully the war in Ukraine comes to an end soon so there is no more meaningless suffering 💙
“No Bullets Fly,” “Night Witches,” and “Bismarck” are a must. Another band with a movie-like music video that you should check out, The Warning and their song “XXI Century Blood.”
Actually the name WW1 came during WW1 and it was given by Ernst Haeckel in The Indianapolis Star September 20 1914. The voice in the end is Floor Jansen from Nightwish , she is girlfriend or wife to the drummer in Sabaton. Nightwish and a must see is Ghost love score from Wacken 2013 . ua-cam.com/video/47e_961OQWE/v-deo.html
It did not end well for most of them. Some of the officers were executed for insubordination, most soldiers were shifted to a different part of the front and were send out on the first attackwaves after this event.
One of the big problems with WW1 was that they still, at this point in time, thought of war as a gentleman's business. War was something honorable among the officers and they tried to fight WW1 like they had done in previous wars in the 1800's and earlier. The infamous cavalry charges come t mind... Unfortunately, by the time WW1 came along, thoughts of honor on the battlefield where long gone and war had become far to mechanized and industrialized.
Sydney base camp of the Aussie chapter - the history of cheistmas truce talks about the football games. It took 6 years to write and record as the band wanted give the song the emotion of being there and feeling the truce between Germans and English and French allied forces. Yes that is the sonata from “carol of the bells”
There was a movie about the Christmas truce called “Joyeux Noël 2005 film “ it’s a incredible movie to see.. There is a small clip of the movie here on UA-cam called “ Christmas truce of world war | joyeux Noël 2005 film” by Vanaze.
And some units had to actually be moved to other fronts in the trenches after this cause whole units on both sides refused to keep fighting but were transferred out or shot as a mutiny
As I can only see Floor, Floor, Floor in comments. Let's put comment about actual song and history behind it. In the beginning of ww1 fraternizing was very common in some parts. After meeting your foe and realizing he is just like you are causes many things like britts sent message when they are firing guns to german troops so they know to take shelter. Xmas truce wasn't like one event, it happened different parts of the line separately but after that men didn't want to shoot "foe". So ofc that was big trouble for higher command so they actually transferred troops to different location. Remember this was early in the war. Later on it became more of a struggle just to keep yourself alive and officers made sure you won't fraternize. It became very ugly war as we know. There's so much in it to learn and talk about but gotta end here. P.s. Floor is wonderful singer but song isn't about her. It's about way bigger things...
This was indeed the first and only time this happened. I can't recall exactly where or when, but I read that there was an attempt (I think ww2?) to do this again but all sides didn't follow the same calendar or maybe Christmas didn't fall on the same day for them, so it failed. I also think this only happened in WW1 bcs, to put it like this... Who were the "wrong" or "bad" guys in WW1? can't answer that can you, can you say the same for any war after that? No. WW1 only happened bcs important people said so and with hardly any war propaganda there was no underlying animosity between sides for the common people
Yes, as other posters wrote, a lot of the soldiers didn't go back to fighting each other, flatly refused to kill their new friends. So, the soldiers were transferred, or split up to go with other non-truce groups, or executed. There's a great book, Silent Night: The Story of the WW1 Christmas truce. Germany had sent thousands of Christmas trees to the front lines. "With the sparkling trees came trust that the enemy opposite was serious about a respite from war...A single Tannenbaum on a parapet might be an unexplainable anomaly. Emerging rows of them were something else." As the Germans explained to the Berkshires, "...the Tannenbaum was more important than the war. Nothing would keep them from celebrating Christmas Eve among their festive trees." p. 14 to 15. It's a pity that the truce wasn't permanent. After watching Audie Murphy and other soldiers with PTS, it's clear that people are just not meant for war.
Phew! I thought that you, like many (American) reactors, were going to cut off the ending credits with the finest singer on the planet, Floor Jansen. This is the true meaning of Christmas, not that bubblegum rubbish by Maria, Kelly, Katy etc. You are already getting recommendations to listen to Nightwish of which Floor is the lead singer. Your lives will change thereafter.
Late on Christmas Eve,1914, men of the British soldiers heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches. The following day, British,French and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. The truce lasted for two days. When their superiors found out, they sent some soldiers away to other places, some ran to not have to fight any longer. The rest were shot right there and then for refusing orders to fight against those they had made friends with.

The higher ups had no say in this. The soldiers did this on their own. After the truce solders actually aimd bad to not shoot the other side. Generals executed soldiers of their own side to get the others fighting and killing again.😢

Hello, no tanks in 1914 (yet), those wooden hedgehogs serve to support the barbed wires...
They are also anti-cavalry devices, from when "cavalry" referred to horses rather than tanks.

18:46 the thing is, they tried not to. On 1914 hatred hadn't set in as much so half the time soldiers would shoot inacuratly on purpose.
