As someone who is a diehard Buckethead fan and who has gone on a journey listening to his 300+ albums with like Electric Tears, Giant Robot, and Welcome to Bucketheadland being my favorite of his, i must say, while he is astronomically amazing and infintely creative, he's far from the best. That title would go to someone like Guthrie Govan or Shawn Lane. They both were geniuses with Shawn being a literal savant. Shawn has the fastest playing in a tasteful implimentation (not just fast for the sake of fast) while also being the most technical guitarist to ever live. Guthrie has encyclopedic abilities when it comes to guitar mastery. They both are the only ones who come close to "the greatest".
completely agree,...even buckethead HIMSELF said "Shawn lane is the best electric guitarist to walk the earth".......and what i REALLY dont understand is that he thinks what he is playing sounds like buckethead....lol
@johncash-vr4ks You're right. I actually went on a binge listening and finding everything I could (and there was a lot) of shows Shawn Lane performed. He was def underrated but unfortunately due to his outside style of playing, people only knew him for playing fast. Basically his technical playing was almost too much for people to even appreciate. After more review, it turns out he was that good at age 15 or 16 playing all of the greats perfectly, in a cover band he was in. Sure his style might not be for everyone, but this isn't a question of whether he makes the best music (that's subjective obviously) this is about which guitarist had the most skill objectively. There's several videos on YT that shows his wide wide range of playing styles that didn't involve just speed. He mastered Jazz, Jazz fusion, classic rock, pop, funk, etc. He was able to play Yngwie Malmsteen's riffs to fans. He played Jimi Hendrix songs that sound exactly like Jimi (with his own added flare during solos of course). Look up Shawn Lane Purple Haze and Little Wing as proof. The man could play literally any style as good as the originator of said style it was terrfying. I know you probably already know all of this. I just had to share with someone the genius of Shawn Lane. Buckethead knew him personally and based his 4 finger tapping riff from Shawn Lane. Shawn could do more with one hand than Paul Gilbert and Buckethead could do with both hands tapping. Apologies for the long comment. TL;DR, Shawn is def one of, if not the literal g.o.a.t. That's all i wanted to say.
@@robosing225 No apologies needed,...everything you said was true,..for the longest time i could not understand why he wasn't a household name,...but that wasn't his thing, from Black Oak Arkansas to playing Indian Carnatic music with some of the best musicians in India there is no doubt that Shawn Lane could do it all.........
@johncash-vr4ks There's a few interviews he did over the phone with some guy (forgot who) after he made Powers of Ten, along with his guitar instructional series that give insight into the depth of his thought process. He was so very humble on the phone and in general super sweet, selfless person. I didn't realize he'd read hundreds of books, yearly, and had encyclopedic knowledge of many different fields, transcribed the most difficult classical piano, violin, and sax pieces into guitar, and all for fulfilling what he enjoyed doing. I really believe he was a savant, basically something past genius, because his specialty spanned across many different fields, not just music. Again that might be a tall claim, but as you already know, playing the guitar well was just the tip of his iceberg of skills and interests. Still to this day, no one has been able to replicate the speed with the exact feel, emotion, and technical mastery like Shawn. Guthrie has tried to recreate one song, but he himself could not copy the speed and rhythmic flow of Shawn's solo and phrasing. If Guthrie can't copy you, you're something special indeed. Thank you for sharing a moment with me, reflecting on the genius and kindheartedness of such a powerhouse of a person who unfortunately, left us too early and didn't get enough recognition he truly deserved. Be well friend.
