It used to bother me as a kid, but now I kind of love that we don't actually see them get the gold (though from the judge reactions we can assume they did). Cos that's not the point. Kate has been driven all her life by the need for the medal. And it's made her deeply sad and isolated. But in the end it's Doug's love for her that's the most important thing. He tells her "you didn't have to do that" because his love for her isn't dependent on her skating, and it's the first time in her life she's had that. Had unconditional love. And she skates with all the love in her heart back. I love it.

I agree. When she just skates out of love and fun and essentially no longer cares about the winning, neither does the film. Which is why we don't see it. Showing a result either way is irrelevant.

Wow! I can't believe you came across 'The Cutting Edge'... I liked it a lot. I even got a chance to talk to the Director Paul Michael Glasser about it. He told me they cast Moira Kelly because when she came in to the audition she was fighting with her brother and they liked her tenacity. He also said that through most of the movie she had a broken leg and they had to shoot around her wearing a cast then mentioned the scene where she was crawling around on the floor looking for her earring. One scene he wanted in the movie but couldn't get in due to budgetary constraints was he wanted a scene with Doug (D.B. Sweeney) playing pond hockey at night with a bunch of cars with their headlights on lighting the ice... it would've been cool and would've shown Doug's love for the game and inability to "let go" of his dream but the studio couldn't find the money for the scene. It's a nice love story so I'm sure you're going to enjoy it.

Moira Kelly's character wasn't just lashing out at D.B. Sweeny, she was lashing out at her entire existence. The reason she was having trouble finding a partner is she didn't trust anyone. She didn't relate to any of her partners because she didn't want to be doing that. She was doing what her dad wanted her to do. In the end when she heard DB Sweeney tell her he loved her, it brought her world together. The Gap that was just frustrating her and making her angry was gone. She wasn't mad at DB Sweeny she was mad at skating. It had dominated her entire life. And she didn't even want to be a skater she just wanted to be loved by her dad. She found that love and it scared her to death in DB Sweeney. Would have loved to have been there with you to watch this one. Moira Kelly actually broke her ankle making this movie. In the drunk scene you notice you don't see her below the waist that's because she had a cast and all kinds of stuff going on for the broken ankle. Both actors learned how to skate now they probably had stunt doubles for some of the skating but the reality is they both can skate now. I'm willing to bet that during the course of making this movie they became quite good friends. You could see it in the way they look at each other. Genuine warmth and love. I don't mean intimate love. I think that's part of why I like the movie so much.

So even if I’ve never seen the film before (like in this case), I can follow the whole story perfectly. I probably wouldn’t seek out “The Cutting Edge” under normal circumstances, but seeing this short version of it was a lot of fun! It's literally one of the best 'I love you' scenes in the history of the medium. As a guy I say it's only rivalled by Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Kate's expression is just... wow. I mean it's not a chick flick as far as I'm concerned because it doesn't pander to cheap emotional thrills or manipulate the viewer (which is what the genre usually does). Aka the vomit worthy cringe stuff which usually makes me sick.

Pamchenko is played by the late Roy Dotrice, a truly awesome character actor. He played “Father” in the TV series Beauty and the Beast, and Wolfgang Mozart’s father Leopold in Amadeus…and about 100 other roles as well. He’s also known for doing the narration for the audiobook versions of the first five books in George RR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series.
His daughter Karen was Jane Banks in the original Mary Poppins.

I loved this movie. I especially loved that she WAS so mean at the beginning because it made you realize she was sabotaging herself because she wanted her father's love. In the end it didn't matter if they got the gold. What mattered is that she got a partner, and she got her father's love. I wasn't crazy about her father's performance though. The scene where she confronts her dad about her just being accepted as his daughter should have been more emotional IMO.

While the "Pamchenko twist" is not even physically possible... The move they are attempting (a "bounce spin", also known as a "headbanger") at 24:00 is so dangerous, it is banned from competitions like the Olympics. It is still performed in exhibitions however, because it is a huge crowd pleaser due to the danger.

To me, the classic skating love story was Ice Castles (1978)...a story about an Olympic hopeful who is partially blinded by an accident and goes on to compete despite her disability. Lynn-Holly Johnson, a professional skater and silver medalist in the 1974 Figure Skating Championships, played the role of Lexi and did a very nice acting job opposite Robbie Benson. It was a surprisingly good movie.

My father had specific genres that he enjoyed. War. Westerns. Etc. Well, this was one of his out of the box movies. He loved this one. And... Can't Buy Me Love is one of my all-time favorites. I was a Patrick Dempsey fan long before McDreamy existed. lol I can't wait to see that one!!

When I tell you that I literally gasped with happiness when I saw this, I'm not exaggerating even a little bit, lol. This is one of my favorite movies. I just love figure skating (and as you pointed out, hockey too, lol!) so when I first saw this movie when I was younger it was just the best thing ever to me. "Toe pick." always makes me laugh along with that moment where they run into her old partner and Doug realizes that the old partner is gay. The look on his face and the way she smirks at him is such a fun moment.
"I always wanted all the figure skating couples I watched to be in love. To kiss after." That made me think of Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov honestly. They're my favorite figure skating pair to this day. You could just see how in love they were when they skated. I still remember how shocking it was when he suddenly passed away and then what it was like to watch her step on the ice for the first time as a single skater about a year or so later.
Thanks for reacting to this one as well - I think you're the only person I've ever seen react to this movie!

Ahhh another movie from my childhood. My sister was absolutely obsessed with this movie so it was always on. The story was good, it was a bit cheesy, but still a solid movie. The only complaint I have was that they didn't show as much of the actual ice skating, but I understand why they couldn't hence all of the quick cuts/motion blur stuff.

Love you Girl! Glad you liked this movie! Definitely great for Valentine’s Day. I like how the coach says “Don’t go halfway. Halfway is bullshit. You go halfway you get hurt.” That phrase is perfect for everyday life. It always gives me chills when they did that lift at the end of the movie. They finally trusted each other and stopped fighting. She gave up control and had faith knowing he wouldn’t drop her. Many figure skaters have told me this lift is suicide. Few have attempted it. It’s like insane lifts in dancing but falling on hardwood and falling on ice are 2 totally different feelings.
Can’t wait to see more of your reactions.
The Russian coach is my favorite character. Douglas was good for Kate because being around him have her a sense of being normal. She was so used to being around wealth. Kate did grow on me though. 🙏🙏

I was supposed to have been reading "Great Expectations" instead of watching tv - in fact, the book was open on the coffee table - and when she gave it to him as a gift I just about jumped out of my skin. But I couldn't stop watching - I had too much of a crush on her by then.

My mom used to have us kids watch it from time to time and my sisters just fell in love with it and I, the little brother actually thought it was a lot of fun too. Now my little girls watch it and they're absolutely fascinated. The nice thing is they're young enough that the adult stuff just goes right over their head. Nice job

She seemed angry at everyone for no apparent reason. Possibly because her mother was no longer with her, that can be really hard for a girl. Her father seemed to focused on her skating, some dads are not good at showing affection to their daughters, maybe afraid it will seem "too friendly"?
But when the "hockey player" came along at first she looked down on him thinking he was not up to the task. But, it turned out he was the first skater to challenge her. She soon found she was having trouble keeping up with him.
I was surprised you didn't mention the beautiful sweaters Moira wore in that movie. There were several that looked so luxurious. My daughter mentioned it several times during that movie. They appeared to be upscale cashmere, the really good kind with two or three layers. Probably cost $400-$600 apiece.
Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it almost as much as the movie.

I love that you reacted this. On one of your live streams I suggested this and may have suggested you watch it with your sister because I figured you'd love the story. I also think there were multiple sequels (didn't have the same cast though), and I don't remember if they were direct to DVD releases or Hallmark or Lifetime channel movies, but I think I have watched the second and third movie. I also believe this movie was filmed mostly in Canada. I'm just not sure where or if it was multiple locations.

Moira Kelly (Kate) also played in an amazing 90s movie you have to watch called With Honors (it also has Brendan Frasier and Joe Pesci) and D.B. Sweeney (Doug) was in Fire In The Sky which is another great one to check out!
