Well, good question. Of course, Ishvara led me to Him. I wish I could recall what caused me to first order various books. But, I was doing a lot of reading in 1995, when I first ordered from the Vedanta Societies of St. Louis and Southern California. Of course, I read The Gospel, first, but now have a Ramakrishna library of over 30 books. Ramakrishna just resonated very well. Even now, having transitioned from Advaita Vedanta to Neo-Advaita/Non-Duality, I can read The Gospel and see that Ramakrishna was pure Non-Duality and pure Bhakti, and pure Christianity, etc. In 1995, I was an active member of the Self Realization Fellowship and recall wondering why Ramakrishna did not have a set list of instructions for Sadhana (other than to love and hold close to God). Now I understand the wisdom of not trying to create a cookie-cutter approach to spiritual growth and Awakening. The Gospel, along with 'I AM That', are two books I will continue re-read until this "bag of bones" falls away.
