thanks for the quick response. It's a 91 fender elite lyte bass. The output jack oxidized after about a year of playing and the tech at the store I bought it from ( it was new), replace the jack. No modifications have ever been made. It has been great until lately, by replacing every 3 months. Now it's every 3 days. thanks
Thank you for you excellent help and diagnostics. I appreciate it very much and will get it done and let you know what the results are. Hope you have a great day!
That's a good question Rudy. The pin read out is configuration was different on these pots then on the pots that were installed for the other set of EMG's. I mention that at 1:20. I don't know why but it was. If they were the same I would have done what you suggested and left the pots in - it would have been much easier that way.
He doesn't use the Floyd Rose the tension on the springs locks it in place. that's why I placed the battery there in stead of having to rout the guitar's body.
hey friend! first, thank god for your NYC accent. Im from BK and it was so refreshing hearing home in this video. I'm on the west coast so there not much of us out here! second, I have a RG120 and im legit doing this whole process in a few weeks and wanted to research some methods. same pickups. clever problem solving with the routing through the spring cage. The alternative is what? carving into the guitar to create a space for the battery? nah. i saw that someone commented talking about the short shaft pots. thats an option. I also read online that you can adjust the longer shafts so more sticks out of the front of the guitar. have you had any experience with adjusting long shaft pots? also, did you reuse the switch or get a new one?
Hello Isan! Thank you for the comment. Sorry it took so long to respond. I also build guitar pedals by the name of Analog Alien and I've been swamped. The player who owns this guitar does not use the vibrato bar, so installing the battery in the spring cavity was a good choice; like you said, no routing! The long shaft pots can be adjusted. You need to use a star washer, so the pot won't twist. Then you adjust the hex nut until just the right amount of the pot shaft is sticking through the body of the guitar. I used a new switch. Everything on the guitar was newly installed. Thanks again for your comment. I hope this helps.
Yes he replaced it with a stereo jack. this was done within the first year and when he replaced the jack it has worked fine for all these years...3 month replacement intervals. Could the ground have worked loose as of late? I really appreciate you advice and thanks again.
With out looking at the guitar myself, but going on what you've told me, I'd say that some how the battery's circuit is still complete and staying connected - even after you disconnect your guitar from it. If the battery ground came loose then the battery would not work at all. Your problem is that the battery is still staying connected and as a result the battery is still putting out voltage - even after the guitar is unplugged. Try replacing the jack, It could be that it went bad on you.
That could be your problem. Did he replace it with the right jack? Is it a stereo jack and did he make the proper connections to the jack so that the battery ground would become disconnected after you unplug your guitar? If he did then the jack may have developed a short causing the battery to still stay connected after the guitar was unplugged. That would drain your battery quickly.
Hi Mitch. It sounds like the battery ground is not getting disconnected after you unplug your guitar. If that's the case the battery's circuit will stay closed and it will drain the battery. You may have a short some where. Were any modifications done to the guitar?
Honestly, I don't what to say with out having the guitar in front of me and seeing for myself what could be causing the problem. I've installed quite a few EMG systems and I've never had a problem. Did you try returning them and exchanging them for a different set?
I think the cavity of my strat has slots for 3 humbuckers and the pre wired system I am getting only has two humbuckers near the bridge and neck I'll have to check I'm not gonna say it does until I tear it apart and that won't be until I get the actives. lol
I plan on getting some actives for my strat I only have two strings in the back if I can jerry rig the battery in place and move the springs away from the battery could I still use my whammy bar? Or am I going to have to find a different spot for the 9volt?
Hey man great video . I have a question can i use for my emg"s 81 85 a Duracell coopertop alkaline 9 v . ? What battery brand is better or Duracell its safety for the power of the pickups? Thanks.
Great idea. Do you know what would be causing a battery to start draining after 2 or 3 days after replacement? My batteries used to last 3 months between changes. I have always unplugged after playing....just that it's burning batteries so fast now. Thanks
Do you know why it would do that? Could it be anything to do with pickup selector soldering. It has one volume one tone and 3 way pickup selector. Ltd f50
The Floyd Rose is locked in place. He doesn't use the Floyd Rose, he just likes the guitar. I can take the battery out and un lock the FR and it will work fine, but that's not how he likes it set up.
Crazy! Makes me afraid from installing this EMG 81 on an old Yamaha strat with passive pickups atm. (two single coils and a humbucker now --> EMG 81 + yamaha humbucker.) I'm crazy.
Hi I got a made in Mexico Fender Stratocaster and I’m thinking of putting in Emg and can I do the same thing like u did in the back where the battery goes in the claw on mine
why didnt u just switch the emg pickus they all have the same quick connects it would have saved u alot of time u wouldnt have to change pots and all that and route
This mod renders the whammy bar useless. The player I did this mod for does not use the whammy, that's why I did it this way. If you plan on using the bar this mod will not work for you. Try to see if there's enough room in the control cavity before you start to route the guitar body. You may get lucky.
Being a guitartech sucks... always! Its like babysitting with tools n wires. I want this, i want that, more here, more there... get your ass up and do it by yourself. Your tech is your friend on the road and not your Butler, Sir!

It took me forever to find this thank you
You are very welcome!

My pleasure Mitch. I hope you can get to the bottom of it. Let me know how you make out :)

You can't go wrong with a Duracell. You can use other 9 volt batteries as well, but Durcell is a quality battery and they last a long time.

Yes, these pickups are active pickups and they require a battery to work properly.
Hey, thanks for the comment. To be honest, I don't know. I've never tried it.
Honestly, I don't what to say with out having the guitar in front of me and seeing for myself what could be causing the problem. I've installed quite a few EMG systems and I've never had a problem. Did you try returning them and exchanging them for a different set?

ie if you put the battery back Floyd Rose is not going to work? in fact we have the commit Bridge?

I’m getting ready to do this on a glarry strat style. Wish me luck
Good luck! Let me know how it comes out!

@daznugal92 I'm not to familiar with the Gio Ibanez so I can't say for sure. Do you have a photo of the guitar???
@analogalien i cant send the link.. it says error.. the model is GSA60 Ibanez HSS
The Floyd Rose is locked in place. He doesn't use the Floyd Rose, he just likes the guitar. I can take the battery out and un lock the FR and it will work fine, but that's not how he likes it set up.
Hey i wired my emg 81 85 set and only works distorted. No or low volume on clean sound

I'm crazy.
Wait you're on long island? Where?
i'm a noob..so this is a noob question...but what exactly is the battery for? the pick ups? :S
i have a EMG 89 IDJ, could it be possible to install in H-S-S strat gio ibanez??
tell me how to use a Floyd Rose with this mount batteries?
I am located in Islandia, exit 58 off the LIE.
What's the point of hiving a guitar (let alone an Ibanez!) with a trem system if you don't use it? >.>
Hi I got a made in Mexico Fender Stratocaster and I’m thinking of putting in Emg and can I do the same thing like u did in the back where the battery goes in the claw on mine
It's a good solution, proving that you don't use the vibrato bar.
You can get a set that has shorter shafts, i found out after i already brought 3 sets lol
Thank you so much for the information. I will look into it. Cheers!
You may be in luck. You may be able to fit the battery where the middle pickup would have gone. Good Luck :)
why didnt u just switch the emg pickus they all have the same quick connects it would have saved u alot of time u wouldnt have to change pots and all that and route
I'm not sure I understand the question.
Cool idea
Thank you! Cheers!

@daznugal92 you can send it to analogalien@gmail.com. I'll take a look at it.
