A quick fix on how to fix the Samsung Note9 discoloration issue. This method worked for me. Watch until the end to see how I eventually got the phone fixed.

I have found a workaround that works for me: Well, I got myself a S9+ with a more severe variant of this same problem.. After changing OS to LineageOS (gave it a try, to check it if was any samsung update that broke the display) I ended up checking that it was a indeed a display fault (the update broke the screen? don't really know). Since I don't really want to be turning things on and off everything I use the damn phone, just so I can get the screen alright, I got myself a software workaround that may be helpful to some people facing the same problem as me and don't have warranty to get it fixed by Samsung, so here it goes: I noticed that, when I unlock the phone, the display itself works alright but with "greenish" colors and sometimes artifacts and found out that, If I set my screen to 100%, after 1 second, the screen fixes itself and goes to normal, and after that I can set the screen brightness to whatever percentage I want, that the display will work 100% until I lock and unlock it again. What I did after this discovery? Downloaded Macrodroid from Playstore, a free macro app, and just programmed the phone to this procedure automatically every time I unlocked the phone. The macro should contain the following actions: Trigger - Screen Unlock Actions - 1: Wait 1 second 2: Set Brightness to 100% (Set "slider value" to 100% and don't mark the other two options that will show up neither the auto brightness, just change the slider value.) 3: Wait 2 second (This timer is required because if you try to set the value right after changing the display to 100% brightness, the screen will still show up the greenish overlay). 4: Set Brightness to XX% (Same rules as action 2, but this time you can set the slider value to any value that you want, I set mine to 20% since it's the brightness that I like to use daily, but you can change to whatever you like). No constraints needed. Save the macro and turn it on. Now, you will notice that after the unlock, without you touching anything, the screen will automatically go to 100%, the display will go back to normal colors and functioning, and then it will go again automatically to the brightness you want to use. I hope I was clear enough and that this helps anyone that may be facing the same issue. (Sorry if some sentences don't sound right, English it's not my main language)
Hey snow I'm having green tint since a week and later I found that changing brightness to full will fix /playing yt hdr will fix the issue too ,even the aod While max brightness use to fix the green tint, for some reason my blue fliter and display modes were not functioning at all.... In my case. I turned on Always on Display, so when i tap the screen clock etc shows, then after unlocking, everything works perfect. But in my case phone not alwys unlock with fucked screen. Anyway, this was not cheap phone when I bought it and I expect that everything works perfect for that kind of money...... I have just tested a little bit more and it looks like there is better solution. You can select Always show, show main screen button (sorry for translation) and (I hope) it will never broke again. You have to wait around one second after locking phone for this button to show, before unlocking

Lots of comments are recently, it shows that this problem happened to us at same time. It couldnt be hardware problem. Yet, Samsung not even bother addressing this issue, same issue happened to S20 but they re so quick to release a patch. Here in after I definitely encourage everyone that I know not buying Samsung , I've had so far three sad similar experience with Note4, Note5 and now Note9, this brand sucks!
This screen problem is just sad. I purchased a pricey android phone hoping I would have it in the long run but then this occurred. Thanks a lot for the help! People didn't need to dislike this video at all!
Yeah I too bought this phone for the long haul and turns out that my old phone that I had bought for 50 bucks lasted longer and with less problems than this fucking phone.
The ones comenting below to use Oled saver STOP! Oled saver is shit... screen looks cheap and screenshots look like shit. Just stop recommending it. Contact Samsung so they can see that a lot of people are facing this problem after their shitty update.
if you can manage to navigate the phone, go to settings and change the following: 1. immediately turn up the brightness, this will allow you to see onscreen even if the phone display goes green. 2. Turn of the adaptive display to ensure the phone does not set the brightness automatically. 3. turn on the "always display option" to always display info on your locked screen. Now when your screen is locked, tap the screen first and then proceed to unlock the phone This seems to sort out the colour problem everytime, just a nuisance to have to tap the screen before every unlock... this, however, makes the phone usable again and proves it is a software issue and not hardware.
My phone had this discoloration issue intermittently but now it's permanent and it's out of warranty :( I doubt Samsung will do anything about it as they want you to go and buy their newer device...marketing shit
This just started happening to my S9. Ive had it since S9 first released. Restarting the phone fixes it temporarily. when locking and unlocking the issue is back.
I would probably end up going back to iPhone instead of fooling around with junk or try to find me a Galaxy S5 from on line. I am not an iPhone fan, but I need a phone that's going to last especially since I got rid of my landline. These cellphones are too expensive to be nothing but junk! They need to be more dependable.
Note 9 here with the same issue. I switched to Samsung after the Apple i-phone software update throttling scandal, now i feel cheated by Samsung too. This issue should be raised to Samsung for resolution via a social media campaign
THIS WORKS!!!!! As long as you have your clock set to "Show Always". Go to Setting, then select "Lock Screen", proceed to "Always On Display", then select "Clock", and "Show Always". BAM!!! As long as your clock is always displaying (even when screen is locked), your screen should no longer go gray.
Thank you so much :) this worked for me been having problems like for a couple weeks. First it was once a while but since 3 days havnt had a good screen even restart or shut down didnt work.
God damn it Samsung. Issue is so widespread. My Galaxy A30s also starting to show gray out screen. Sometimes there's a jolt at top left of the screen when turn on and off the screen. This all happened after applying the January 2022 update I believed.
It is 5 April 2024. This started happening to my note 9 after I dropped it last week. It happens when it is warm after watching a lot of UA-cam videos or playing games. If I let it cool down, it works fine. I learned that if you turn on "always on display", the dim numbers on the display keep the screen working perfectly fine every time you unlock your phone. I suspect it is a connector from the screen to the motherboard that must've gotten loose and is causing this. I will take apart my phone since the rear glass is cracked and disconnect/ connect all the screen ribbon cables to see if it fixes the issue.
It is now 8 June 2024. The issue has gotten progressively worse. I replaced the back glass and disconnected all the screen connectors and reconnected them to no avail. The only way I can see the screen is by manually setting the brightness to the maximum and disabling adaptive brightness. I ordered a generic Note 9 OLED screen on ebay and will replace it withing the next few days. I'll report back once I replace the screen with results.
So I replaced the screen and it works great now. It is a generic screen from Amazon with the metal frame for $140 or so. Two things I've noticed... the Hard Press Home button feature doesn't work anymore and the S-pen doesn't charge anymore. The S-pen works as a stylus but no longer has Bluetooth functionality. Also, this screen is a bit smaller then the original. The built in bezels are thicker than the original screen.
Set your brighness to lowest or maximum, it will solve the problem as i just notice after i buy new handphone and try to sync the data from note 9 . For me, i will ban samsung forever even though the cost of replacement screen is cheaper then buy a new device. All this happend after march patch update. It samsung fault and yet they still denie on it and still charge for screen replacement.
I have this issue recently all of a sudden even though I didn't update the software. Just power off the phone and power it on again. It doesn't work if you do a restart, have to switch it off.
It worked for me but the screen is too dark . I turn adaptive bottom off and slide the brightness all the to the right and screen is bright and usable but the quality of color is definitely not as good as before but it's absolutely usable, SAMSUNG SUCKS, this company doesn't even address this kind of problem to show its responsibility to their customers, as a long time samsung customer I give up and switch to other brands,..... SO ANGRY!!!!
New Update August 3, 2020 phone is still working well, I even updated to One UI 2.1. Also, for those using Oled Screen saver, becareful as it can damage your screen in the long run. Quick update.... Out of nowhere my phone started working normally today. However, when I open the camera app... it goes back to the yellow screen with horizontal lines. Once I close the camera app, it goes back to normal. So, this is definately a software problem and not a hardware problem. Day 2, July 15, 2020. Phone is working perfectly. Opening the camera app no longer discolers the screen. Go figure
Any news on software update? This problem just happened to me 2 days ago. I install Oled Saver, but the screen looks like shit. Not even comparable to the original screen. When you take screenshots, they look like crap. Any new news? I have searched Samsumg pages and twitter and I don't see any news on this problem.

Same Issue with my S9. Samsung support was useless. I wont buy a Samsung again. They wanted to charge me almost $300 to repair. My phone is 2 years old and the issue only came after a software update.

@@azmathullashaik1650No permanent fix provided by samsung yet..u can only minimize the problem by enabling adaptive display set to cool and always on display- double tap. Activate "Always on Display" feature. Unlock the screen only after "Always on Display" is on the lock screen. You will see the familiar vibrant colorful Samsung Galaxy Note 9 display after this fix. 🙏
No - Since Factory Reset will not help where the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 March Android update itself has the bug. Factory Reset will work only if you have got some corrupted setting on top of the update.
It's not their fault it's because of AMOLED screen type it depends on how much you put your brightness level and how long you use your phone with high brightness. iPhones can have similar problem too cause from iPhone X they use AMOLED screen technology as well P.S. this shown in this video is a software problem and Samsung's fault but you said your problem occured one year ago
THANK YOU ! I have the same issue in May 2020, after the March and May patches - its frustrating - Its only 11 months old - and when I went to the Samsung shop , they service guy told me it was a screen damage (SGD 315 repair) and denied a software issue even though I explained to him there are similar cases online. What a clueless #@$%. Thats the problem with Samsung - always slow to act and always in denial and cover ups Another friend had similar issue - and screen went black after 24 hours) The latest software patch also destroyed the menus for the edge menu - brilliant high IQ patch
I am doing so much of research and analysis on the screen, color and reboot loop problem of my Samsung Phone, I fear !!! soon I will become a scientist, and many countries will hunt me to give their prestigious awards.!!!!!
After having the phone for almost 5 years ( this year is the 5th) i started having this issue since last week, its not the update. Last update was in 2022. Its something to do with the sensors but like most people, my only solution was to close the screen and tap to wake screen up and then unlock the phone. Colors will be normal that way. If i do find any solution or fix, i will post under my comment. To me this phone gave me no issues for a long time, quite happy actually
Yes. This is the only one which works and works better than any other solution given here for me at least. But service centre visit looks to be on cards for a permanent fix
This my third strike with a Samsung phone. I have this S9 which I bought from a trustworthy friend and it worked incredibly well for a week. It was my alternative to replacing my iPhone SE with the new iPhone SE 2020 model. The S9 was a cheaper and what appeared to be a better choice as opposed to shelling out the money for a new iPhone SE. I was impressed by the S9 but then disappointed when the incredibly crisp and bright display went green and grainy and dim shortly after updating to the latest software. I am not an Apple fan but experience tells me that they are the better or at least most reliable of two evils. I tried to roll back the update following a youtube video but it always fails. Finding out the S9 isn't compatible with the DJI Drone software I use is another major disappointment. Enough time wasted on this.
Guys my phone become a green screen almost 2 month. Then 1day, i accidendly turning selfie mode camera + flash then my phone turn to normal screen but i need to repeat the same step if i lock my phone.
Guys, from reading the comments I've concluded this is a software update issue, not hardware. I have as S9+ its been nearly three years now, everything has been absolutely flawless until now. Today i was at work and started browsing and i noticed it was getting hotter than usual, it never gets hot like this, even after extended use or charging (i dont even use any fadt charge, i totally baby it) I got worried and noticed that after disabling and enabling blue light filter back, the colors got weird. Blue ligjt filter always had this nice, kind of crepuscular orangeish tone to it and the screen has always been very sharp, but after turning it on again it became some sort of a light greenish light, looks weird as hell now, with or without the filter. Mind it that this phone handles even gps use on Waze or Google Maps like a champ, it doesn't get too hot... But now just to type this comment here it seems that it is stressing the hell out of the battery and it already lost like 5% of it just to type. It happened after a couple days after the last update. Its not just your brand news phones guys, my S9+ is also going hot and greenish/greyish... What the fuck Samsung!? Fix this or I'll go something else next! Its been flawless all this time! Now everybody's phones goes crap like that?
What makes me specially disappointed with this is not the phone itself, is the fact that i really took good care of it all this time, only charged it between 30% to 85% of the battery to maximize its life, whore good protective screens and cases... and the phone responded to it all, it wasn't the phone or me, it was a Samsung's fucked up update that screwed it up. If i only knew before they would upload a "virus" to ruin my phone i wouldn't have minded taking care of it at all, in fact i would have picked another brand. And i thought only Apple where assholes to fuck people's phones deliberately, but Samsung too? Im so disappointed right now...
@@alanramone4263 Not in this way man, this was not an Oled burn issue or overtime problem. When an Oled or Amoled screen burns out, it doesn't happen evenly, you can detect more or less affected spots on it, like burning in the screen small circles where your apps normally sit on the screen. In this case, its an entire color shift in the entire screen after a "security update" took place, not to mention that 3 year old Note 8's and 9's around the world alongside with many brand new S10's, S20's and even the S20 Ultra displayed the same issue after the patch update took place however since these new phones are still under store warranty they rushed to release a fix patch for the current flagship models out there to avoid returning items, the same cannot be told about models out of warranty. Fun fact: samsung supplies high end screens for other phone brands. Doing a quick search i found that many other phone brand users whose phones have high end oled displays had the same issues immediately after recent updates. This happened in late 2018 and now twice in 2020; march, right after the S20 lineup releae and June. In my country this new patch only came late November. It's not the hardware failling but the recent android updates are interfering with their functions. Whether or not it is intentional we won't be able to tell. My S9+ has been nothing but wonders for almost three years but immediately after a software update 26/Nov it went bad. And im not the only one. And... they also released patch fixes for the S20 ultra and Note 20 ultras immediately, S10's too right after... if it was a hardware going bad a patch wouldn't be able to fix it.
I don't know for sure, but I'm afraid this is a hardware problem. Something's wrong with how the display is starting up, not the panel itself. If you power the display off and on too quickly it triggers the green screen. Fixes like using always-on display only temporarily reduce the issue by adding a gap when the screen is off. If you're in a call and using the proximity sensor it easily triggers it if you move your head around.
@@israeljaysegui8976 Ofcourse they have to. If this is a hardware issue, how can a software solve it even temporarily ?!!?! So, clearly this is a bug and needs to be fixed in the April/MAy update
owner of s20 ultra for 2.5years 5 months off my guarantee i hate samsung since i experienced same problem with s7 edge back in the days yet i made same mistake after so many years going back again after owning an excelent xiamo mi8 for 6 years in between those years. And now here i am with the same problem but one of the toughest as well. So what i did to fix it is you have to insist on blearing catche through force reboot and try reopen your screen from main button as many times till youre screen comes back to normal again cause it will....just be patient the problem is clearly a software problem since you havent a broken screen etc. and then try to immidiatle change your display settings to 120hz instead of 60hz and you wont have to make a factory reset losing your data, files etc. Cause even if you do factory reset you will eventually experience the same green screen again anytime without any warning since you will go through the same uptades again and again. Im not changing back to normal 60hz for at least a year from now till they fix the problem from samsung hopefully they will, cause most of us dont have the money to afford such phones anytime....
what I did notice is when it happens I take it out the case turn off the screen and press hard on the back and rub the font on my shirt its def a heat issue.. I have never updates my software I am stilll on oreo 8.1.0
I have exact same problem on my Note 8. This thing turns on when the screen gets heat up. As long as the screen is cool it runs perfectly fine even for weeks. But only if it gets heat, it turn on immediately.
It actually the sensors if you turn off adaptive brightness and turn up the brightness it works.. if you turn on adaptive brightness and cover sensors it work it may be the cache ...try clearing it
Turn off aways on display and then turn off your display After that, with the display off you need to use a wrong finger on the fingerprint scanner 5 times until it automatically turns on the display and shows a pop-up message saying that you've tried to unlock it 5 times without success. Then turn on the screen immediately and this should "fix" the problem
@@AnguiXDd uninstalled oled saver and tried your method. It only works the first time and screen looks normal but thereafter it the same problem. I reinstalled oled saver again

A #Note 20 ultra, Snapdragon, US version, here... It seems that the #yellow #discoloration is a software issue that #AMOLED display loses the true black color
Had the same issue with my note9, it's a bug on phone's sensor, nothing to do with the hardware. How to fix: - Turn OFF the adaptive brightness - Turn ON Always On Display, set it to Show Always - Lock your phone - Wait till AOD clock appears - Cover phone's sensor, just like the man did in this video - Unlock the phone using your fingerprint - Everything back to normal Good luck In my country prior March 15th, for this type of problem customers can get free display replacement if they bring their device to Samsung service center, even though the warranty has expired (thumbs up for Samsung). However from now on, they plan to charge customers 50% of total cost for display replacement (thumbs down for Shitsung).
no if you turn the always on display on and and cut your screen off and then tap your screen and hit the button at the bottom of the screen your screen will turn on with out being green covering the top of your phone dont do nothing
Whenever your screen get green, lock your phone while Turning on always on display.. then unlock your phone with finger sensor or tapping the screen (depend on setting)
No need to turn your always on display on. I just send a text message to myself then quickly turn off the screen an when I receive the message I unlock the screen. So far the quick fix has worked a 100% of the time. Pass the message along until the issue is fixed.
you saved my life sir... on this lockdown, my phone is the only way I can order my food. Really samsung??? really??? Edit: on the other note, how to turn off the adaptive display can be done using double click power button camera feature (camera still accessible) and swipe the menu down from camera app. No need to cover the adaptive sensor whatsoever

Since I don't really want to be turning things on and off everything I use the damn phone, just so I can get the screen alright, I got myself a software workaround that may be helpful to some people facing the same problem as me and don't have warranty to get it fixed by Samsung, so here it goes:
I noticed that, when I unlock the phone, the display itself works alright but with "greenish" colors and sometimes artifacts and found out that, If I set my screen to 100%, after 1 second, the screen fixes itself and goes to normal, and after that I can set the screen brightness to whatever percentage I want, that the display will work 100% until I lock and unlock it again.
What I did after this discovery?
Downloaded Macrodroid from Playstore, a free macro app, and just programmed the phone to this procedure automatically every time I unlocked the phone.
The macro should contain the following actions:
Trigger - Screen Unlock
Actions -
1: Wait 1 second
2: Set Brightness to 100% (Set "slider value" to 100% and don't mark the other two options that will show up neither the auto brightness, just change the slider value.)
3: Wait 2 second (This timer is required because if you try to set the value right after changing the display to 100% brightness, the screen will still show up the greenish overlay).

The ones comenting below to use Oled saver STOP! Oled saver is shit... screen looks cheap and screenshots look like shit. Just stop recommending it. Contact Samsung so they can see that a lot of people are facing this problem after their shitty update.
if you can manage to navigate the phone, go to settings and change the following:
1. immediately turn up the brightness, this will allow you to see onscreen even if the phone display goes green.
2. Turn of the adaptive display to ensure the phone does not set the brightness automatically.
3. turn on the "always display option" to always display info on your locked screen.
Now when your screen is locked, tap the screen first and then proceed to unlock the phone
This seems to sort out the colour problem everytime, just a nuisance to have to tap the screen before every unlock... this, however, makes the phone usable again and proves it is a software issue and not hardware.
Thanks! Got my phone sorted!
Is this problem still a little thing?

Bravo! Someone who knows the stuff.
It is obviously an update issue as it started to happen after latest update.
I actually am considering the same 😅

God damn it Samsung. Issue is so widespread. My Galaxy A30s also starting to show gray out screen. Sometimes there's a jolt at top left of the screen when turn on and off the screen. This all happened after applying the January 2022 update I believed.
same for me after the same update, more like dliberatly downgrade
It is 5 April 2024. This started happening to my note 9 after I dropped it last week. It happens when it is warm after watching a lot of UA-cam videos or playing games. If I let it cool down, it works fine. I learned that if you turn on "always on display", the dim numbers on the display keep the screen working perfectly fine every time you unlock your phone. I suspect it is a connector from the screen to the motherboard that must've gotten loose and is causing this. I will take apart my phone since the rear glass is cracked and disconnect/ connect all the screen ribbon cables to see if it fixes the issue.
same as mine but i cant see anything
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!

Guys, from reading the comments I've concluded this is a software update issue, not hardware.
I have as S9+ its been nearly three years now, everything has been absolutely flawless until now.
Today i was at work and started browsing and i noticed it was getting hotter than usual, it never gets hot like this, even after extended use or charging (i dont even use any fadt charge, i totally baby it)
I got worried and noticed that after disabling and enabling blue light filter back, the colors got weird.
Same here. I have small green ish horizontal lines up and down my screen
Im so disappointed right now...
it's the nature of OLED display, at some point it will fail.
So frustrating as Samsung doesn't care. Good bye Samsung.
try this:
turn on ALWAYS ON DISPLAY >> turn screen off >> press screen to enable always on display >> unlock phone
This is what I have been doing so far. And it works perfectly. But it was a temporary fix.

Yes it works, brightness either lowest or high and its normal, typical brightness it was on most of time - green screen, faded.
Had the same issue with my note9, it's a bug on phone's sensor, nothing to do with the hardware. How to fix:
- Turn OFF the adaptive brightness
- Turn ON Always On Display, set it to Show Always
- Lock your phone
- Wait till AOD clock appears
- Cover phone's sensor, just like the man did in this video
- Unlock the phone using your fingerprint
- Everything back to normal
Good luck
In my country prior March 15th, for this type of problem customers can get free display replacement if they bring their device to Samsung service center, even though the warranty has expired (thumbs up for Samsung). However from now on, they plan to charge customers 50% of total cost for display replacement (thumbs down for Shitsung).
i do the same bro
Thank you!
Wow. Wtf it worked lol
Thank you so much. That worked!
I have to pay 50% for the screen replacement. Even though my phone has no dents/crack
Thank you so much. I was going to go buy a new cell phone. Much thanks
no if you turn the always on display on and and cut your screen off and then tap your screen and hit the button at the bottom of the screen your screen will turn on with out being green covering the top of your phone dont do nothing
That doesn't work either. Smh
ha ha ha ha ......
just turn on "Always on display". Then just double tap to wake up the phone and proceed normally!! Simple!
Whenever your screen get green, lock your phone while Turning on always on display.. then unlock your phone with finger sensor or tapping the screen (depend on setting)
That worked. Thanks!
is it working
That's actually working. Thought I broke my screen some how. They really need to make an update and fix this issue.
I also have the same issue after it was updated. I cant find the adaptive thing mentioned on this video
u have to pull down the menu, then look under the screen brightness adjuster
man you saved my sweating a*s... i was so mad. thank you so much!
I don't understand what he did there
No need to turn your always on display on. I just send a text message to myself then quickly turn off the screen an when I receive the message I unlock the screen. So far the quick fix has worked a 100% of the time. Pass the message along until the issue is fixed.
can you explain it more clearer on how to do it?
Send the message brother
Hi guys try to install OLED saver, from there you can adjust the light display
I think its working thank you.
you saved my life sir... on this lockdown, my phone is the only way I can order my food. Really samsung??? really???
Edit: on the other note, how to turn off the adaptive display can be done using double click power button camera feature (camera still accessible) and swipe the menu down from camera app. No need to cover the adaptive sensor whatsoever
ITS WORKING !!!
