    I've seen several navigation videos on You Tube; attended a residential course on mountain navigation and practiced skills on the hillls. John,; this has to be the most instructive presentation I've seen. Your presentation is clear, calm and well thought out. Your 3 part series has been a great refresher course for me. Really enjoyed it and will continue to revisit it.
    Thanks, Phil

    ‘Triangle of uncertainty’ is an expression I’ve never heard of before, but it describes where I am in my life quite accurately 😂🤣! It was clever of you to lay on windy weather conditions to add drama Jon 😳😊. Camping Astronomers are obviously made of tough stuff 🤩✌️

    Came across this channel quite by accident, but quickly realised I recognised you because you helped me upsize my boots from 9 to 10 size the other day and gave some great advise on hiking socks and base layers for my partner. I also remembered you said you used a Silva compass. Anyway, nice video Steve, very clearly explained and annotated. Now armed with a Brunton compass and some maps, heading up to the Lake District next week and will try and check out Helm Crag and Loughrigg Fell like you suggested, if we get the time. I’ll let you know how I get along with those new boots! I’ll go and check out your other videos, especially the astronomy. That was a BIG hobby of mine many years ago. Sadly my scopes have been idle in their cases for the last 10 years or so. I really should dust them off and get back at it. Big thumbs up for the video and looking forward to watching the others. Subscription added. All the best. Mike and Hayley. 🔭

    A good instructional movie.We all will be lost at some point when trekking, but it is when we are lost that we need to trust the instruments. In my experience cognitive bias will make you think you are in a specific place and you will look for confirmation for your belief - and that will often make you even more lost. So knowing how to use the compass and map will help you to get objective data about where you are; something that is important! And I talk from experience being gloriously lost in forests and mountains because I thought I could do without map and compass - now I know better!

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  3 роки тому

      You are very right about cognitive bias. I have also been in situations where you try and fit the terrain to where you think you are on the map. Alternatively you start to tell yourself that the map is wrong 🤣.

The app is great, so I'm sure you'll get lots of use out of it . It shows all of the footpaths etc, and even things like gates when you enlarge the screen to show more detail. Thanks for watching 🙂

    I have seen folks who align the North arrow on the compass with the map north and then rotate the map. You use another method to orient the compass lines with the meridian lines of the map. Any comments on which method you prefer? They both seem to be valid.

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  7 місяців тому +1

    Silva how to mess up a 6 figure reference , the six figure chart is in reverse , hindering a rescue if you use the one on the compass , well done silva for not correcting this for decades

    what a coincidence that you are on top of a hill - what if you were in a dence forest??

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  5 місяців тому +2

      The situation in a dense forest would be completely different as you would be unable to use triangulation to identify your position. If it was me lost in a forest, I would attempt to retrace my steps to reach my last known position. If following a compass bearing then I would reverse the bearing. You may have your own ideas. Perhaps you could make a video on this for your channel.
      For my video, it was important that viewers could see where I was (ie on top of a known hill) so that they could see how triangulation works.
      Luckily, getting completely lost, where such techniques are useful is relatively rare.
      Have a good weekend.

    If only you cud repeat step by step taking of bearing again while triangulating, it wud benefit your viewers like me

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  8 місяців тому

      I think that triangulation is the most difficult part of using a compass, especially as the conditions are often quite poor when you need to do it. Luckily, it is quite a rare thing to need to do.

    For magnetic declination adjustment…if W of MN, then subtract MD? I’m confused. In part 1, it was add MD??? Please clarify?? Thanks

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  Рік тому

      Thanks for the question. In part 1 I was taking a bearing from the map, and transferring it to the ground around me. In part 3 I was doing the opposite - taking bearings from the land around me, and transferring that to the map.
      This is the reason one video talks about adding the figure and the other subtracts it.
      Hope this helps 🙂
