About American Indian Film Institute & American Indian Film Festival-
The American Indian Film Institute's mission is to foster understanding of the culture, traditions and issues of contemporary American Indian and First Nation peoples. We encourage Indian flmmakers to bring to the broader media culture the indigenous voices, viewpoints and stories that have historically been excluded from mainstream media. Moreover, our goals include tireless advocacy for authentic visual and work-force representations of Indians in the media. The American Indian Film Festival, established in 1975, is the oldest and most prominent media showcase of its kind in the world. In nearly four decades of work, AIFF has screened over 2,000 flms from American Indian and First Nation communities.
The Abenaki -- People of the Dawn
    Director: G. Scott McLeod
    Animated Short • 17m • Canada
Identity is often revealed in the most perilous situation. In The Abenaki -- People of the Dawn, it is Joe Obomsawin's intimate knowledge of the back roads and hidden trails on the frontiers of Quebec and New England that narrowly saves a group of bootleggers from capture. The escape also provides the impetus for this character's powerful and deeply personal retelling of the history of his people. Huddled around a fire in a remote cabin, Obomsawin unfolds the tragic, improbable and inspiring story of the Abenaki nation, reduced from 50,000 to some 1,500 over a few hundred years of colonial settlement. A collaboration between author and storyteller Mike Burns and director G. Scott Mac Leod as part of the animated series The Water of Life, The Abenaki -- People of the Dawn fuses traditional pencil animation with new digital media to tell the harrowing tale of a people's struggle for survival.

I hunt and fish ...and still live on the river Merrimack and the pemmejawassick occasionally I will find a spearhead or some other artifact that the ancient ones left behind and it makes me feel connected with them. I have also. Gone to odanack far upstreamto the three rivers I felt a connection then also
