Here some VERY spoiler free timeline info:
2003 June.
"Giant statue" and "The dragon" appeared from the sky in Shinjuku Tokio. Both are destroyed shortly after.
2003 December.
First incidents of mysterious disease (later known as "White Chlorination Syndrome") appeared. Those who are infected have their bodies turned into pillars of salt and died. Alternatively infected goes berserk and transforms into red eyed monster.
2014.
Beginning of the "Project Gestalt". To survive the White Chlorination Syndrome humanity decided to separate their souls from bodies. Souls should be placed in their corresponding shells know as "Replicants" when world recovers from global pandemic.
3470.
Failure of the Project Gestalt.
4198.
Death of the last human soul confirmed. Humanity is extinct. Only androids are left.
5012.
Aliens arrived and started the war.
5024.
To stand against androids and weapon number 7, aliens created "Machine lifeforms."
11,306.
The aliens are exterminated by the machine lifeforms.
11932.
Start of the "Project YoRHa". Big lie about survived humans on the moon to motivate androids.
