  • Many of our colleagues join after completing an advanced degree (Ph.D.s, MDs, JDs) in fields outside of business, including medicine, law, engineering, and economics. They love the opportunities they have here to effect large-scale change, learn continuously, collaborate with outstanding colleagues and shape their own paths. Hear their stories.
You can learn more about two of the women featured in this video, Jessica (www.mckinsey.co...) and Megan (www.mckinsey.co..., on our careers blog.

Just goes to show that you need virtually ZERO specific training and knowledge to do what consultants do, whereas for other jobs you need years of training.

That’s rather unfair though. Firstly, if all PhD holders went into academia, there literally would be no space to accommodate all of them. Secondly, because a PhD is largely translatable, I genuinely don’t see an issue with branching into other fields - including consulting. Lastly, consulting is a good route for people without a business background to venture - eventually - into business or whatever they desire. We also have to consider that people are different, I for one am completing a PhD is molecular biology but I really don’t see myself in this field. I want to apply my skills in a different field, and because consulting is accommodating, then why not. It’s insulting to impose your opinions about people decisions when you weren’t part and parcel of their decision making process. You just need to chill and let others be.

I'm sure the gentleman with his PhD in physics doctoral committee would have loved to disapprove his dissertation if they knew he would've joined these greedy firms and be another lackey for them. All I see is sellouts. Its a shame such well educated and promising minds seek money and not knowledge. I cant believe a entertained this idea but after watching this I know where my calling is, and its most definitely not a firm...
