After you learn who is who among the real soldiers it is worthwhile to go back over these interviews (and watch We Stand Alone Together) to see who is recalling the specific events. It adds a deeper level of respect and admiration for the sacrifices made.

The fact that there is footage of Winters saying he asked Speirs when the show was made, did he really kill those prisoners on D-day? The lawyers for the tv show were worried about depicting the stories the men told about Speirs…

You don't want to be taken prisoner by irregular troops operating behind the lines. They have no way to take care of POWs, soooo......
Speirs recognized this, and took it upon himself to do what needed to be done. The reality is that the situation came up for soldiers on all sides. By doing the job himself, he relieved his men of any guilt for doing it.

Even gave em smokes before hand, it's clearly not something he reveled in doing but it was a necessary practicality of keeping his boys safe and upholding their objective. This episode does Lt. Dyke dirty. He was an excellent platoon leader, but struggled at the company level. He won 2 Bronze Stars for gallantry in Holland and Bastogne. His breakdown in Foy was because he took 2 rounds in the shoulder as was going into shock.
Speirs actually ran much further than was depicted in the show.
The Luger went off because Hoobler was trying to straddle a barbed wire fence *with his finger on the goddamn trigger*
This episode is the 2nd toughest to watch in the series.

Yes thank you, Dike was not remembered fondly by Winters and the men of Easy but the truth is always more complicated. I believe the Bronze Star he won in Bastogne just a few days before the attack on Foy was for dragging a wounded man to safety while under enemy fire.

When you are recollecting the experiences of individual soldiers is hard to keep it 100% accurate, even Ambrose made a comment about how hard it was. In the book all we see about Dike was from the point of view of both Lipton and Winters, and neither liked him. The line “i’ll go for help” is present in the book, just like the “as present as per usual” altho that last one was Peacock who said it, not Dike

    • @dastemplar9681
      @dastemplar9681 2 роки тому +24

Yeah, Dike was considered to be socially awkward, which explains why nobody really took a liking to him. But he was not an incompetent combat leader. At Foy, the reason he froze up and zoned out was because of blood loss. No one noticed he was shot twice in the chest, and nobody really found out the truth even after he got evacuated to the CCP. They all just assumed he was transferred away from the line because he “cracked”.

Part of it has to do with being able to convey the contrast between Speirs/Dyke that the writers are trying to get across. You've only got about 50 minutes in the episode to develop his character and try to portray why E Co doesn't like him. Also the average viewer at this point would probably still think Speirs is ruthless/war criminal, and would dislike him as well. That's why the writers have to sacrifice Dyke's character a bit in order for the average viewer to understand why E Co was so grateful to have Speir's as their CO.

That thing about Joe Toye being fixated on his helmet instead of his leg due to shock reminds of a really, dark joke my Dad (former Navy UDT and Miami cop) once told.
Dad arrived on scene to a bad traffic accident. A BMW got sheared nearly in half by an eighteen wheeler and the Bemmer's driver was alive but his left arm was missing. He kept crying saying, "My car! My car! Look at my car!"
Dad was trying to calm him down and keep him from going into shock. Finally,Dad had to get his attention and not focus on something so superficial as a car. So he grabbed his right hand, squeezed hard, and said, "Nevermind the car! Your arm is gone. We gotta stop the bleeding."
The guy finally looks down at where his left arm should be and says, "...MY ROLEX!! WHERE'S MY ROLEX?!"
Like I said, very dark sense of humor.

My eye orbit, jaw, elbow, foot and ankle got broken and was badly bleeding. Later my coworker told me that all I kept repeating was, "did you notify my wife and family?" over and over. I don't remember the fall or events after it until the cold wind hit me being carried me out of the helicopter into emergency room.

    A couple of things:
Spiers is a genuine bad ass. He is a really scary person. But he is on our side. (Deep sigh of relief)
The song the girls sing in the convent is Plaisir d’Amour a French romantic tune from the late 1700s. Later it was modified with a key change to a baritone voice, some musical changes to accommodate a language change, and a change to the bridge. It became Falling in Love with You, one of Elvis’s biggest hits.
In the US Army there are privates, pretty much the bottom of the pyramid, followed by non-commissioned officers, corporals and sergeants. Next up the ranks are commissioned officers, lieutenants, captains, and up. There is a big gulf in status between non-coms and officers. On a military base the commissioned officers will have their own mess, etc. Lipton got moved up to where Winters was in the first episode.

From Beyond Band Of Brothers, the memoirs of Dick Winters (a highly recommended read btw) the scene with Dick almost running out and being called back by Sink before Dick calls to Spiers to relieve Dyke was slightly different in its unraveling. As Sink and Winters were watching the rather sloppy attack unfold, Sink turns to Winters and says "what're you going to do Winters?" In that moment Dick turns around and Speirs is there waiting to get put in. Dick remarked in the book about how the best leaders always seem to put themselves in the right spot at the right time. They're always there when you need them most.
It's fun to compare the slight differences in the series with Winters' account. Anyways, I love your reactions and can't wait to see your episodes for the rest of this series!

I don't like Dyke, but he was wounded during the attack and was going into shock, but he had so many layers of clothing on they didn't know he'd been hit. If you rewatch this pay attention to his behavior- subtle signs of PTSD even before he was wounded. It is easy to make him the villian because we don't like him.

You had said, what's that, when Spiers was saying to Lipton that Winter's put him in for a battle field commission. What this means is Winters put in a request to promote Lipton from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant, an officer. To be an officer you need to have a 4 Year College Degree or you can prove your leadership skills during combat and if an officer puts in a request for you and it gets approved - then you move up to an officer.

Ronald Speirs is one of those men that seem to be made for war; perhaps live for it, even. He was actually born in Scotland and came to America really young with his family. He finished the war in Europe as a Captain and as you've seen by now, he was eager to go to the Pacific and fight the Japanese in the planned and then canceled operations there. He stayed in the Army and was a Major by the time he went to serve in Korea where he participated in one of the two combat jumps of that war. After serving as commandant of Spandau Prison in West Berlin, he went to Laos in 1962 to train the Royal Army there as part of the events that lead up to Vietnam, but he came back to the Pentagon and retired in 1964 before US involvement escalated drastically. He had reached the rank of lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit upon his retirement. Not quite the Medal of Honor but it's up there.

@@sandraback7809 "Dike, like Buck was kept on the line because they were so stretched for officers and men."
It's true that they were stretched thin and needed everyone, but Buck himself has said that he didn't suffer from the PTSD portrayed in the episode. He said he was okay with being portrayed that way because it's an important thing to highlight, but isn't accurate to him. Likewise, Dike was an experienced and decorated combat leader by that point. He just wasn't well liked by the men of Easy and that's whose accounts were primarily sourced for the series. Memories are flawed and biased as we all know, and they did also take a lot of liberties for the sake of drama. Small details like Dike yawning obviously aren't something anyone would recall or mention, and they didn't. Do you actually think every little conversation between soldiers in the show is an actual portrayal of the real conversation they had in that moment?
No idea what the last part of your comment is for. I never said that those men weren't under immense stress and pressure. I have family and friends who are veterans as well. So what? Compton himself said he didn't think he had any issues with PTSD as he was still able to do his duties and that he left because of the trench foot and that he handled the stress of the war pretty well. I think he got into a verbal argument with a superior and that was why he didn't return. However, he had little issue with the series portraying him having those problems as he felt it was important for understanding what the soldiers went through and that it needed to be shown. Pretty incredible man if you ask me.
Dyke was wounded during the assault on Foy, if memory serves he was shot in the shoulder. I don't know many people that would be able to handle leading an assault with a wound like that. That said, leading up to that point he held at most a modicum of respect amongst many, but not all, of the men and was generally not missed once he left. He was not killed during the assault on Foy and stayed in the service during Korea. He wasn't actually cowardly either as he had been awarded the Bronze star during Bastogne for pulling several wounded men by himself out of a foxhole while taking enemy fire.
Lastly, Spiers did, in fact run through the town to meet up with "I" company. He then rejoined Easy when he ran back through town. The stories about him shooting the POW's during D day and later on one of his own sergeants were generally true. On D Day there was an unofficial order not to take prisoners as the allied forces didn't have any way of holding them. The sergeant was trying to push his troops into a town that was about to be hit with artillery and repeatedly disobeyed orders to stand down his assault, so shooting him probably saved the rest of the squad from being killed. Spiers didn't seem to mind the rumors and didn't really deny them when he was contacted and asked by Winters himself.

    • @buddystewart2020
      @buddystewart2020 2 роки тому +1

Not only did Spiers not deny them when Winters asked about it, he confirmed them. The story about Spiers killing the prisoners is true. It was confirmed in an interview with Dick Winters. The guy doing the interview asked Dick about this, and Dick told him about it. He said that Steven Ambrose called him one day and told him they had a problem. Lawyers from Simon and Shuster called him and were worried about potential lawsuits from some of the stories that were in the book and. The Spiers story was one of them, the portrayal of Nix drinking too much was another.
Dick told him not to worry about it, he would handle it. He said he wasn't worried about Nix, he knew that wouldn't be an issue, but the Spiers story was something else. Dick said he called Spiers and said 'hey Sparky, you know those rumors that were floating around, about D-Day, were they true? He said Spiers said 'oh yeah Dick, they're true'. He told Speirs about the phone call from Ambrose and the Lawyers concerns and Spiers said don't worry about it. He would write them and letter and tell them what happened. Apparently he did just that, and Dick said it was never an issue after that, because it was true.

@@buddystewart2020 thats for sure, but for E co. once the book and series came out there was alot of Q's on what Speirs did and they didn't want that, so they tended to be quite, think it took 5 years of drinking with him before XXX (from E co) he told me what he had done on D-Day after the 2nd Ambush (there were 3 that morning but for the series they showed 1 and it was shown wrong)

I think some perspective is in order here. Spears shot a few prisoners because he had just 2 other men with him. His job was to get all the men he could find to the rally point. 3 men really can't do that and bring prisoners along. on the other hand, Winters did take prisoners, and so did many other Paratroopers on D-Day.

They did dyke dirty in this episode, he wasn’t actually the incompetent do nothing they portrayed him as. Early in the war he earned a medal for rallying soldiers and leading a crucial defense of a key tactical point. At foy he was actually shot in the shoulder and suffered severe blood loss which left him incoherent, like hoobler the heavy winter clothing hid his injury so easy company assumed he froze out of cowardice. He later served in Korea with distinction. Dyke wasn’t the man or soldier they portrayed him as in the show.

In every company there is a Commanding Officer (CO) and the Co. First Sergeant. The two of them are the dad and mom of the company. The CO leads the company. The First Sergeant takes care of the administration of all the enlisted men in the company. After Lipton became a 2nd Lt. and platoon leader, StfSgt Floyd Talbert became E Co. First Sergeant. In episode 10 there is a scene where Talbert asked Captain Spiers to replace him from Co. FS back to a platoon Sgt. because he misses being with the men. Spiers response was "Ok, I guess you have earned the right to demote yourself"

Some fun facts. Dike's father actually has his own wikipedia article due to being a New York Supreme Court judge. After the war, Dike was transferred to the Army Reserves but then fought again in Korea, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1957. He also was a U.S. Commissioner to Japan and worked for the CIA. He started a family after retiring and a few years after that, moved his family to the traditionally neutral Switzerland.
The show really paints him in a bad light but that's mostly because so much of Ambrose's book that the miniseries was made from was made with large input from surviving Easy Company men. Dike's being a replacement for company leader and status as an officer means the men didn't remember him fondly and it shows.
And now you know why artillery is called the God of War. I can't even imagine the feelings of having a dud land right next to your hole after seeing two of your friend having just been blown up in their's.
Also, Winters offering Malarkey the chance to be his runner for a couple days is another excellent example of his leadership. As was said elsewhere in the show, even just a couple hours off the line can do wonders for a soldier's mind and he wanted to try and get Malarkey back to help him with his grief.
Finally, Spiers actions are Foy are more than slightly exaggerated in the show. I can't remember exactly where I saw it but I believe his run to I Company wasn't just a straight sprint through the enemy but involved lots of crawling and use of cover. Still, fucking badass.

Liptons job as the First Sergeant was to maintain the composure and combat effectiveness of his company. Their doubts about their commander, while justified, lowers morale. Its his job to try and curb that as much as possible even if he believes what his men do. Such a tough spot for a leader to be in.

Really have to give it to First Sergeant Carwood Lipton. As a civilian, he might have been one of those sentimental guys who would say, “Please Don’t Go, Girl,” and he knew why he was afraid to be alone, but as a soldier, he definitely had The Right Stuff. Didn’t mind spending a long time in the field to become a Dirty Dawg, and also knew how to keep on Hanging Tough whenever things went south. As a sergeant, he knew that military protocol meant going Step by Step up the chain of command, so when he jumped over Dike to tell Winters his misgivings, he definitely wasn’t in no mood for no more Games. You could tell that, by that time, he was definitely no longer a New Kid on the Block.

Your reaction was great, it brought me to tears. I think Dyke had lost his nerve before he took over Easy company, that is why he acted so strangely. I don't really blame him, it is just that the command staff didn't see that he was no longer effective.

Even XXX got a chuckle out of it , then XX started singing his little ditty's and then it was just a blurr after that , dam Prop Blast that stuff will sneak up on you. epic hang over were had by all. But yeah any vet who fought in that battle remebers the cold, lack of food and supplies. we also had Jack Agnew with us that time, who was with the "Filthy 13" in Normandy but by the time of the Bulge many of those guys were sent from the Demo section too the Pathfinders and were at the school in France when the 101st was deployed, so they made the only combat jump into the area to set up contact for the resupply drops for the division.

According to the behind-the-scenes dvd in the BoB collection they are sitting warm & comfy inside a studio with fake snow, fake trees, while they are running around with special effects blowing up the fake trees. I think the attack on Foy was the only part filmed outdoors.

Lipton getting a battlefield commission is more than just a normal promotion. It's going from being an enlisted man to an officer, more like a meta-promotion. A 22 year old kid who just got a commission as 2nd Lieutenant technically outranks even the highest ranking Sergeants with 20+ years of experience (though they'd be unwise to pull rank in practice).
Becoming an officer generally requires having a college degree, so there's also kind of an unspoken class difference there, especially back then when just graduating high school, let alone college was much less common. Battlefield commissions were kind of a way to say "screw the normal rules, this guy has proven himself to be an excellent leader, we need him in a leadership role."

Love the story structure of this episode so much. You can feel the opening fatigue, the stress of "can I get through this" only to be relieved by "small moments" like Joe returning, only to feel the gut-wrenching lows of Toye/Garneir, adding to the lose of confidence around Dyke to the THRILL of Spiers taking over knowing that you are on the right track once more with a darn good chance of making it after all.
Also, Dyke's career was actually EXTREMELY impressive overall. The issue was someone who was good at SMALL unit management (or individual) compared to LARGE SCALE management that simply overwhelms them or places them in a position that they aren't ready for and struggle just to keep their own head above water, resulting in those under them basically just drifting in a sense of uncertainty but knowing THEY are the ones who will be the first ones blamed or removed.

Easy made out of Bastogne because of Speirs mindset that even under heavy bombardments, to accept you're already dead and kept moving. Btw, this didn't show the shell shock Germans had because Allies used the proximity fused artillery shells that explode midair unlike on impact like normal ones. That's 80% more kill rates.

Not so fun fact, the luger had a problem of going off by itself due to the gun's design. So the German military instead of redesigning the gun instead redesigned the holster so there were less problems with it going off. Also apparently Dyke was a good leader but he got some trauma during the assault because he got shot. Idk why they gave him such a bad wrap but I guess he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
