Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for over 2.5 years and living together in Minneapolis in recent months. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Accepting and loving someone with a disability does not make some ‘an angel’ - using language like that infers that someone should HAVE to be an angel to be with Shane or suggests disbelief at the idea that a normal human person could fall in love with, or date, someone who is differently abled.. I know you mean well but you inadvertently are dismissing the incredible things Shane obviously brings to their relationship and infer that Shane is any less loveable that anybody else.
Hannah is just a human being who loves their partner dearly, and so is Shane. She helps him with things just like able bodied people do in their relationships.
Hannah sure is a lovely person but I think it’s harmful to speak like Hannah deserves a medal for being with Shane. She is his girlfriend, not his unpaid carer.
The issue is with our society not being accessible, if it were, The amount hannah helps out would diminish significantly. I look forward to that day :)

I hadn't heard that word sludge since my husband was diagnosed with liver cancer and the doctor said that's what it look like it was filled with a bunch of sludge. So that's what came to my mind when he said that. He is such a jokester and loves to tease Hannah.
Shane sounds like my husband...wants me to do everything, but tries to tell me how to do it. 😂 Sometimes I humor him, but he knows I'm right.

What a great video! I almost cried when Shane put the last piece of tape on that gift. (I’m a mother of a 5 yr old with severe special needs and I celebrate EVERY first! So naturally I celebrated Shane’s 1st wrapped Christmas present)
Shane seems to be doing really good lately, maybe I’m odd, but I noticed the facial muscles moving a lot more and seeing him move his hands seemed a lot less difficult.
I came here from watching SBSK and I am sure glad I did. You guys take the uncomfortable awkwardness out of disabilities. Laughing about our own situation is how we cope , and seeing someone else do it makes us feel like we are not the only weirdos out here.
