In this video, we will explore how the rival empires of the Frankish civilization, the Byzantines and the Islamic caliphates grow in power and influence, and come into conflict with one another as they take very different paths. In Francia, the Merovingian dynasty was overthrown by the Carolingians which culminated with a renaissance under the rule of Charlemagne the Great. In the east, the Byzantine Empire entered into a religious reformation which threatened the unity of Christianity. Under the emperor Leo III, the Iconoclastic movement would prohibit Christian religious images within the empire creating the first real divisions in Christianity between East and West. In the Islamic world, the Umayyad dynasty will be overthrown by Abbasids.

It's a great introduction to the Middle Ages and very easy to read with lots of great maps, pictures and primary sources.
