Aston Villa took the lead but couldn't hold on at Nottingham Forest and eventually lost 2-1. Here is our reaction, as we ask why Villa continually concede goals. #avfc #utv #astonvilla
Ive been saying since Jack was here that we go down too easy. We shouldn't rely on getting a foul. Id tell them to forget you get fouls...just win your challenges.
You aren't too negative. You made some really interesting points. Although, future programming note you could have two segments called 'spicy question time' and 'Negative Nigel's Corner' 😅 About your well spotted points; you identified and articulated better than I something that had been bothering me as we limped to the end of last season. I, too, think our form has carried on from last season. I had fixated on the Palace match as the example, but you were spot on with identifying those previous matches. And, perhaps what minimised (or hid) the damage throughout the season was having pace in the side, which we are seriously lacking this season, and it's showing up now as we have issues going up a gear and protecting leads. My other concern is we're too nice, we don't have enough bite. I see it in Spurs, Bournmouth, Brentford, and other teams. It's that fighting spirit, wanting to win no matter what. The only players who I see demonstrating it are Duran (in abundance 😅), Mings, Emi's x 2, and sometimes McGinn (misdirected energy), Digne, oh, and yes Carlos, although I see him more as random thug who inexplicably will at any moment take someone down for no reason ;) The end result of the above is that I don't think teams fear us as much, and as Slot and some other managers have noted, we can be a bit predictable. Part of our growth is to overcome these hurdles, but it's a bit painful to watch unfold.
Haha, Negative Nigel's corner 😆 Agree with all you've saif there. We do lack pace sometimes & struggle to find that extra gear. I also think players do sometimes need to take responsibility on the pitch & react to what's happening (I'm wary of going after players too much as often they're just following instructions), but there does need to be a bit more energy shown on occasion, particularly when the opposition ups the tempo. UTV!
I thought this game was tailor-made for Mings and was delighted to see him start. Losing him set us back and i believe he would have made a difference in the last 10 minutes (even if he came off the bench). Outside of this, I reckon teams have figured that our weakness is a lack of physical intensity and that Torres and Carlos can be got at it if you play direct. Martinez also doesn't look like the keeper he was last year or the season before. Finally, I would have kept Kamara on and brought on Barkley for Youri and gone 6 at the back to repel Forrest. We used to do it but i reckon it's Emery deciding it's not sustainable and we need to learn and evolve. He's right but it might take time for us to master it. Love the podcast
Like the analogy of the tidal wave. So true. There is no in-game reaction... We have enough experienced players to have the thought or belief to respond to circumstance. I never see anyone shouting to anyone, other than Tyrone, during a game. Given he's played 2 or 3 times this season that suggests no one is vocal in the team. McGinn is not that type of captain so there's a bit of a lack of that.
Spot on Frankie , and that last 20 minutes, where was the character and leadership to many went hiding when going got tough been a trend . Our defending will cost us our season, mate never rectified. Kamara coming off was a mistake to.
Yep, losing Kamara didn't help. And, as you say, sometimes the players have to take it upon themselves to react & up their intensity/do better at keeping the ball when the opponent goes for it. (I'm always reluctant to go after players as so many poor coaches blame them when things go wrong & they're usually just following instructions, but I do suspect there's a lack on on-field direction sometimes - which is why Mings might have helped on Saturday). UTV!
It feels like the players have been geared to put everything into the champions league and the premiership campaign is suffering as a consequence of that. Of course It's our first time back in the biggest football competition in the World so the chances of winning the thing are pretty low and we're in jeopardy of not being in Europe again if we can't get the mentality right to bounce back from the CL to the premiership. The back line needs consistency and seem to be chopped and changed far too much hence we're leaking goals for fun. All in all what's being built at Villa is night and day from what we were when we fell out of the Premiership and I do understand that these things take time to get right. UTV
Agree with everything. I feel there’s a few things. 1. We often concede in quick succession 2. We rarely keep clean sheets and need a minimum of two goals a game to win which is also why the NF retreat annoyed me with a one goal lead 3. We are really poor at backs against the wall defending or have been for all of 2024 without Mings. Our defenders just lack the composure to stay cool. For the game yesterday, I thought Barkley was the sub to make to keep the ball better. We have a real issue on the right. Cash looked so tired but no one is trusted to take his place right now.
Agree with all that. Mings in defence against Brentford when they pulled a goal back helped Villa withstand their effort to up the tempo. Really wish we’d cut out these frustrating patterns. It’s going to really cost us. UTV!
Central defenders simply are not good enough at out-and -defending,backs to the wall type stuff. Carlos has the body of an Adonis but the heart of a mouse. Pau is a silky player going forward only. Konsa wasted at rb. Cash lacks pace going forward and sadly can't cross. We lack that special creative player in midfield. I adore McGinn but he's not a top 4 player, needs to go to Celtic in summer. Bailey also needs to be sold. Drastic views of mine I know, but I'm ANGRY. I can still see Carlos barely walking forward with the ball repeatedly as though we were 5 nil up. He really has go to GO. MERRY XMAS XX
It was obvious that defence was an issue towards the end of last season and should have been addressed in the summer why not ? Our midfield is weak and for some reason we always use our five subs and completely disrupt any cohesion we may have .
Not negative at all mate. The defence apart from Mings, are far too weak at times and don’t stand up and be counted. I’m adamant it was a foul on Cash tho
We keep hearing we are going through the process, what we will look like or when it will click who knows? Definitely a bit to much wrestling, holding and ref taking no responsibility on big decisions, he played on and waited for var to decide. Earlier in the season it was the other way around with VAR going with the refs decision.
Mate the answer to your question i`ve been banging on for a long time and its so obvious. Having Diego carlos and Pau Torres as our starting central defenders is a disaster waiting to happen. They`ve got no Pace, are Poor Aerially and are always prone to make disastrous passing errors. Only 4 Games ago we played our best central defenders Mings & Konsa, and beat an in form Brentord team with the much vaunted Mbuemo and Wissa comfortably. And Konsa is not a Right Back. Why is Emery not seeing this or if he is why does he ignore this.? Diego Carlos is in the same mould as Zat Knight.
Good to hear from you, Mervyn. The Carlos/Pau partnership does consistently concede, doesn't it. Have always preferred having Konsa as the main RCB with Pau or Mings beside him. The Brentford defensive performance was noticeably much more secure than a lot of our recent games. It's a shame Mings got ill at Forest. It might have made a difference. UTV!
Pau/Carlos really are dreadful together, the rest of the league can seem to see it.- A ball over the top and you`ve a chance of a 1on1. It seems to be an Emery blindspot of which there is an increasing number.
Who better for Man City to play on saturday than us. Watkins back in for Duran........i mean it`s no good Duran scoring 3 times in a week is it......Rogers losing possession most of the game....McGinn crowbarred on the left of midfield and Pau/Carlos as 1 of the worst pairings in the league, what`s not to love.

Agreed on Mings - it was exactly the game for him. Thanks for the nice words about the podcast, Paul! UTV!
@@pauloneill7439 Add Konsa to the names of defenders who can be got at.
Great podcast Frankie and theories

Shout out to Monty’s the best Wetherspoons ever in Shrewsbury! (Dance floor included)
Haha, great stuff. What a place! UTV!
Your thumb nail. “ Why do Villa concede goals” Simple… the defenders are not good enough. I will elaborate my thought later.

Agree with all of that- i`d add Duran ought to be starting over Watkins and Rogers has 1 good game in 5/6
Yes, the backs to the wall style of defending is not our speciality right now & is costing us. UTV!
Frankie, It’s a case of lack of leadership on the pitch
It does sometimes look like players need to react in-game at times. UTV!
Martinez save!!!??? Was there a massive head in the way Frankie?
Haha, it was a massive head. In fairness, I think I mentioned the save. Unless I'm misremembering!
It was obvious that defence was an issue towards the end of last season and should have been addressed in the summer why not ? Our midfield is weak and for some reason we always use our five subs and completely disrupt any cohesion we may have .

The subs definitely didn’t help in this game either. Kamara coming off was annoying as he was playing great again
The subs were weird!

Definitely a foul on Cash. And, yeah, they do need to take it upon themselves to react in-game sometimes. UTV!

Torres can't defend. As for Carlos. he got exposed on Tuesday. Change them
