Brother. You cycle that bolt like a pro! Good job! Thanks for the education on the old ammo. I've never seen such a consistant delay (hangfire) from any old box i've ever scored in an old barn. Usually they either shoot or they don't.. Be safe and have fun my fellow gun nut. Chuck
A hang fire simply means that when the firing pin strikes the cartridge the primer only partially ignites resulting in a short delay from pulling the trigger to the release of the projectile
Since th ammo is old or improperly stored it will hang fire. A hang fire is when the firing pin hits the primer and it does not go off right away. If you watch during the beginning of the video he will pull the trigger and you will hear a click and a couple of split secs later it will fire.
Excellent! Amazing noise! I used to have a deactivated SMLE but had to sell it :( Was a sad old day.. I was amazed at how smooth the action was though. Very interesting vid - what causes the hangfire problem?
Just keep in mind that surplus .303 Brit is getting harder to find. You'll be left mostly with commercial stuff which may/may not be that affordable. At one time, about 7-8 years back, you could buy 50 rounds on charger clips, in cloth bandoliers for $10-13 ea.
Gotta love that POF!! Seems as though it's the only ex-mil .303 that's available to the public in Australia (unless you know more than me! please tell me if that's the case). I used it often about 12 years ago and never had any problems with it. I bought a big batch recently and I seem to have hangfires about 4 out of 32. It appears to be the same age as what I had all those years ago (1965-68), but I believe it has to do with the way it has been stored.
Nice gun mate, i have one myself as you can see in my video. I shot mine for the first time last saturday and it was great. Would you know how i can find out who shot my gun in the war? Its got all the markings and stamps from its service, which is from 1941 till i think 1945, but im not sure as to where it was used or by whom. Also has anyone ever told you that you look like chopper?
Nice job. My Lithgow #1 MkIII* is from 1941 too, with apparent re-arsenal in 1943. I have been able to hit silhouettes with just iron sights at 200 m & 300 m. Though I admit that it was largely luck after 200 m - 300 m was like shooting at a speck probably no larger than this period ->.
wonder if a hang fire could be delayed enough so that a fast cycling shooter ejects the still burning cartridge and have it ignite in mid air... that'd make an ass clenching scare
hi mate, i am looking at a No.4 Mk.1 enfield for purchase (collection and firing at a range here and there). do you have any suggestions or recommendations? many thanks
unless you live in Queensland australia dont answer this does any one know if its worth going for a minors gun license and if so how long does it take how do i get a gun and does make getting an open license easier
@luvbigexplosions You cannot own a gun under 18 (junior/minor's license.) You need an open license to be able to own a gun personally. It is worth going for a license and your best bet is first to do some firearms courses with a shooter's club (I went with the SSAA.) Then when you have received the documentation saying you are qualified on those categories of firearms, you can then apply at a police station to get a firearms license.
I'll never trust Pakistani stuff. A cousin of mine used 8mm Pakistani surplus and it blew up in the chamber of his beautiful 1916 Mauser. He was lucky he only sustained damage to his hand, and very lucky that injury didn't end his Navy career. Beware of the Pakistani surplus!
lol, "the old click bang" a simple sentence made funnier with the addition of an Australian accent :P
Amazingly quick cycling for a bolt action. Faster than many straight-pulls!
Brother.

Incredible sound they make. Love it

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I pick up my SMLE in the summer.

hethis guy easily can survive a zombie attack with that rifle and that rapidly bolting action

Had the exact same problem with the Pakistani POF ammo. 5 of my 32 rounds were duds and almost every single one of the other ones hangfired.
im thinking about picking one up at the next gun show. either a MKIII or a MKIV
@grobo11 There isn't just two. There's the Jungle Carbine, Mk1 Mk, II, Mk III Enfield 1917, and a few others. Oh the SMLE. This is the WWII one.

that look'd to be a NICE SMLE rifle there.
Every one I've had has gone pop just right. 1966 manufacture
What is a "Hangfire"? Love the video though! I'd love to shoot on my own!

By the way Slug, nice A2. Were you ever with 1/19? You look familiar.
Generally speaking it is quite flat but the east coastal areas are fairly hilly.
hi mate,
i am looking at a No.4 Mk.1 enfield for purchase (collection and firing at a range here and there). do you have any suggestions or recommendations?
many thanks
hey dude, try doing the "mad minute."(30 rounds downrange on a fixed target in one minute)
what happens if you accidentally cycle out a round in the process of hang firing? (lets say you are volley firing)
It seems like I can at times see the projectile come out for a split second
I have a colombian mauser with slight pitting, is there anything i can do?
Read the description, it's the ammo.
if you buy them about 20 bucks for 20 rds. alot cheaper to reload them yourself if your gonna shoot alot, maybe 20cents each
unless you live in Queensland australia dont answer this does any one know if its worth going for a minors gun license and if so how long does it take how do i get a gun and does make getting an open license easier
Oh yeah... gotta' love the POS.... ummmm... I mean the POF ammo ;-).
Lee Enfield SMLE's are known for having very smooth bolts and your bolt doesn't look too smooth compared to others.
how much does a lee enfield smle go for in US Dollars
6 people were inspired by the sound of the sound of this gun, lost their vision and accidentally hit dislike.
is that chopper?
Yes, they're cheap too! 150 to 250 bucks.
its a shame that the best bolt action battle rifle ever made has crappy Pakistani ammo.
yeah its not hard at all they are everywere. im amazed thats theres only videos of aussies shooting them..im picking up one of these rifles next week!
