Possibly the biggest difference between a posh (RP), or southern British accent and a northern, or midlands accent is that in the latter ə and ʌ are pronounced almost identically.

You're welcome 😊 It's not your fault... The English vowels are difficult for most people! Reading out loud will really help you to improve your pronunciation. If you watch my videos which will teach you how to make the sounds, and then read for your daughter, it will help you to integrate the correct pronunciation into your English speaking, and also it will help you to become aware of where your difficulties are. Apparently, I’ve been transcribing the wrong vowel /ɔ/ for English words like ‘bought’ and ‘saw.’ I guess it’s because I learned IPA for French, Italian and Thai which all have a pure /ɔ/ vowel. Some regional accents might approach [ɔˡ]. As an example, Philadelphia dialect uses a fronted [ɔ] somewhere between [ʚˡ] and [ɔ]. But I suppose we’re looking at standard RP here.

Another good way to remember the difference is that typically /ə/ is sounded at the start or end of a word and /ʌ/ in the middle. It's very tricky otherwise.

Hi Shameem Thanks for your comment. Keep the bottom lip and the tongue relaxed - especially for /ʌ/ and /ə/ For all the sounds, my tongue sits in the bottom of my mouth, and is close but isn't touching my teeth. Hope this helps :) Michael

Hi Samuel. What's important is to be able to pronounce sounds clearly, so that your English is easy to understand. That's what I teach.
