I love, love Express Tones since they came out. Thank you for sharing! Great job!
They are fantastic eh?! Alas, they decided to hold back on launching them here in the U.K. thanks for watching and for your kind words.
Glad to have found you. I've been using Shades EQ almost my whole career and Pravana for close to the last twenty years. I feel pretty comfortable with them, but it's great to have a knowledgeable resource using them both as well.
Awww, that’s great, I’m so pleased you did.
I don’t use Pravana really any more as they decided not to launch over here…I was there European ambassador for 6 months, still have some stock left.
Great to have you following along! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I’m a new subscriber and my hair professional did this combination and omg! The most amazing icy blonde Added in a dash of pearl but it’s the best. I almost cried. Your such a genius! Love your videos. Such a talent. Ty so much for this amazing product and providing my hairdresser with the best recipe for my hair
Oh. My. Goodness.
This has so totally made my day…no WEEK!
How cool is that, WAHOOOO.
So glad my content helped and thanks for reaching out to let me know.
👨🏼🙏🏻✨
YES!! I'D LOVE MORE PEARL TONER ADVICE! I just subscribed because I'm also switching from another unsaid product line and falling in love with pravana, it's great for covering grey on blondes 😍
Hi there, thanks for watching! There will be one more (rather epic) tutorial featuring Express Tones - I just posted the result in a Short…it’s on my home page - but alas, Pravana have decided they aren’t going to launch in the U.K., so my involvement with the brand has come to an abrupt end.
Yes it is really sad, it was my dream gig…I’d already developed loads of in person education for the coming year but it is what it is. On a positive note, a lot of the content you see on my channel allies to ALL brands - I try to feature as much “theory” of hair colour as possible, so as not to limit the people watching. For example - my upcoming video gets into cool Vs warm pigments in hair colour…so there’s plenty of reasons to keep on watching.
Thank you so much ! I am a professional hairdresser and trying to learn express tone by provana !! Thank you for such informative information.
Great info. Thank you. I thought they were level 6. Now I can formulate better. Love clear
I do love them
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦 just got pravana. I used the toner today did 3parts clear to 1 part pearl. I should have done 1 pearl ,1 violet, 2clear. But first time and no education yet!!!
You’re very welcome, thanks for watching! Hmmm, I bet it was still a gorgeous result?! Remember - straight out of the tube the tones sit at a level 8…and personally I feel they are rather pigmented, so if in doubt, sheer them out.
I love them, wish they bring back the natural, I just never see it on the selves but the rest of the colors are beautiful
They are great eh…it’s such a shame they didn’t launch them over here in the end. Yes, when the initially sent me them I was shocked anything neutral/warm had been discontinued.
Its amazing for doing root smudges because of its progressive deposit. So u dont need multiple bowls of color u just dont leave them on the mids and ends as long
Agreed….it’s one of my favourite toners EVER. Such a shame they decided to not launch it over here in the U.K.
Thanks
So hey Craig so you do the formulation of 1:1.5 then just add as much clear as needed to get a brighter toning
Hi there, thanks for watching. The 1:1.5 is for the developer ratio - 1 part colour + 1 1/2 parts Zero Lift. You would always have your chosen shade/s + Clear + 1 and a half times the amount of Zero Lift. I find them to be very pigmented (they sit around a level 8 straight from the tube) so I would always add Clear if I’m working on a lighter canvas (and want sheer toning)
Oh please help me get the perfect white colour. No salon I’ve ever gone to has even gotten my hair to even a level 8, which can’t get white to my knowledge. I use schwarzkopf blondeme at home which at home does amazing (no idea why no one uses it when it has great lift). I digress. I typically use wella colour charm after, t18 or t14 depending on my hair or if I’m going for silver. But these sound amazing. The only benefit I have that helps me dye my hair myself is that my hair is shaved from one side to the other ear (fading together to make it look not weird ofc)
I used to use the pravana purple or blue semi permanent dye just to have fun colours, but I’ve since stuck to doing basically a pure white colour instead. Though I guess it doesn’t zing since it doesn’t have a mild pearly tone to make the white more fun. There’s plenty of photos of white pastel mermaid colours going around but idk long rant of, how can I perfect getting my hair proper white?? (And avoid banding, this last bleach was sad as I now have a band that won’t go away)
Hi there, thanks for watching. So, the simple rule is this - if you want “white” hair you have to be a level 10 first…the toner is only a tiny part of the result, the canvas is IT.
Craig, you're going to get me on trouble with my husband when I buy every toner that Pravana offers for blondes before I finish using my SEQ lolol!! After getting all the dogs, he started counting my collections 🤣
Ok, I could totally stash those. A very straightforward line of colors, I love that, and the all level 7 part! Where do you get your swatches?
They are brilliant. The swatches are from Pivot Point. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the information. Can you please tell me how you swatch? I think it would be the most helpful thing I could do to learn, or get better at my toning.

Is the ash going to cut red and orange undertones leaving a nice ice beige color.? Or suuggestionns? Thank you for talking about the clear.
Hi there, thanks for watching. The reduce red you need green - there is green in the Ash shade and to cut orange you need blue - there is some blue on the Beige shade. It’s impossible for me to be exact without seeing your hair but hope that helps
Why did we never get to see all the color swatches...that was cool...and i wanted to see them all
Sorry, I’m not sure what you mean? You can find digital representations of the results for all the Express Tones available on the Pravana site. I don’t work for the brand, I’m an independent creator….
Thanks so much for this video. Question, i use 9.12 with 10% toner, is beautiful. what mix shall i put on my roots not to look so dark contrast? mean level 8? thanks! 🤗
Hi Bea, thank you and thanks for watching. I’d need more information to be able to give you formula advice - but I’m afraid I can’t get specific without seeing your hair…way to many variables. From what you’ve said it sounds like you’d need to tint your root…but that would give you a definite regrowth…
Hi! Great vid! I’m just learning some Pravana. I love SPV toner with Matrix. What would be similar to use with Pravana? I’m thinking switching lines in my salon. ❤ 16:24
Hi! The Express Tones are great, I love them…alas no longer available in the UK.
I’m afraid I don’t know Matrix well enough to be able to help - there is a tone chart for the ET’s online.
Craig, do you use a developer with the toners or even the zero lift from Pravana?
Hi Craig! Thank you for posting this video. If a formula is: Express Tones mixed 1:1.5 - for example - 20 grams of Express Tone + 30 grams Zero Lift developer. Is the "Express Tone" portion the combination of the Express Tone plus Clear to equal 20 grams?
Hi there! You’re most welcome…I’m so glad you found it and appreciate you reaching out.
Clear is counted as colour, even though it’s colourless, if that makes sense - so you always account for it when measuring Zero Lift.
@@theworldofcraig Thank you for responding so quickly and for clarifying! I cannot wait to play with these toners! I appreciate your content and will start watching more!
Many thanks! V
Hi there! Do you find yourself not using the platinum toners? I know I am 1 person but...I find not a lot of content being concise and clear. If you get a chance can you consider doing a basics videos on the toners?
Hi there, thanks for watching. I’ve not tried them - and won’t get to now as Pravana have decided against launching the brand in the U.K. and Europe…such a shame but that’s business. Glad you’re into the Express Tones…I love them! Wait till you see what’s coming on here…
Hi Craig 👋
Would it be a disaster if I use another brands clear toner, gloss or pasteliser with the Pravana express toners?
Thanks 😊
Hi there. It could be - Express Tones are very pigmented progressive in the way they deposit, the results could be very unpredictable. I would never advocate intermixing any elements of any brands to be honest.
Hi Craig, I’m considering having an express gloss and tone done at a professional salon. I haven’t coloured my hair since my early 20’s as my grey hair was very resistant to dye. I would leave the salon with over processed hair and washed out looking grey hairs. I am now in my 60’s.
They say that the toner washes out in 6-8 weeks. Though I am a little worried that there will be a demarcation line when new growth shows. If that is the case then I will stick with purple shampoo and conditioner.
Is the express gloss and tone the way to go for my naturally coarse, curly hair to brighten the natural grey/white? I over heard that they can be applied to dry or wet hair. What would be the best application route to take?
Hi Donna, thanks for watching. Demi permanent toner/colours/glosses are great for adding reflect to grey hair - they have changed a lot over the last 20 years for sure. If it’s a true demi permanent (like Shades EQ, Express Tones, Color Touch) and it’s mixed with the correct developer and formulated correctly, you shouldn’t get a demarcation line. They can be applied to both damp/and or dry hair - different brands have their own application guidelines…Express Tones featured in this video always go onto damp hair.
@@theworldofcraig Hi Craig, I just found out that they will be using the Colorance Gloss Tones by Goldwell.
So does the amount of clear give it the final level? So if a dye is a level 5 if you added 5 parts clear would it be a level 10? Thank you! 🌈
That’s the principle, all brands do have their own guidelines though and the cooler the tone the deeper/darker the result will appear.
Hi Craig, i m transitioning to silverhair in my 5th month. I had a bleach 3 month ago but now my bleached hair are quiet yello... i want to tone, but not my silver parts, witch is very silverwhite at the top and darker everywhere else.. can you give me a tip what tone to use, evt how to mix?
Hopefully i get Pravana in Switzerland... Thanks! Great video!
Hi Chaya. How exciting…well done for the change. If I’m honest, I’d leave the toning to the hair professionals…you’ve come this far, I wouldn’t want to give you advice then it’s not right. Perhaps a pigmented violet shampoo/colour conditioner to tone where it’s yellow would be a good go-to…?
@@theworldofcraig Hi Craig, i read your comment only now..., thanks al lot! Yesterday before reading it i put violet shampoo and conditioneron and i let the conditioner about half an hour, and it did the job well for now! But i colored my hair and did highligts a lifetime myself, so i m a bit of an alchimist with colors and i want to do my toning in the future by myself😉...! So i figuren tha 1/3 os violett and 2/3 of clear would work fine, what you suggest? Thanks a lot for your interest! 🤩
@@chaya8122 You’re welcome! Awww, glad you got a good result. It’s hard for me to give formulas out without seeing your hair…but that sounds good.
Hello! I’m dumb and confused. If the violet comes out as a 8 from the tube and I want it to be a level 10 would I use 1 ounce violet, 2 ounce clear, 3 1/2 ounce zero lift developer? I feel like an idiot! If not can you explain “parts” in numerical sense?
You are neither dumb nor confused - you’ve got it!
There are many other factors involved, such as level of canvas, condition of hair…and just simply how damp the hair is when product is applied but you’re on the right track. Wahoo!
So I accidentally bought this in violet when I normally buy the pravana vivids violet. Can I just put this in my hair without mixing it with anything?
I'm guessing it won't give me the dark rich purple I'm look for then?
Hi. If I want to use 2 oz of black 1n.. how much zero lift should I use?
Also if I used 1.5 oz color how much zero lift to use? By box instruction is in French
Hi there
There isn’t a 1N Express Tone…? If you mean Shades EQ, it would be an equal amount of Processing Solution.
If you’re meaning Chromasilk permanent colour, it’s 1:1 - 2oz + 2oz.
Express Tones are mixed 1:1 1/5 - for example - 20grams of Express Tone + 30grams Zero Lift developer
I have dark brown base hair color and was expecting to get a rich mahagony color all over by using Pravana light mahagony brown + 5N light brown creme colors . Instead it turned out to be very dark black color except where I had some grey hair on my scalp. How can I correct it and which shade of Pravana express tone should I use for now ? Please help !
Hi there, thanks for watching.
Sorry you’ve not had the result you were expecting.
It’s really hard for me to help with the process of removing the colour without seeing your hair - I would perhaps suggest an at home box colour remover to start with but that’s a BIG process and it’s hard to be specific.
I would’ve suggest using the Express Tones over what you have - if you’re already feeling it’s to dark, they will only make it deeper
Thanks for responding. Can I use express tones without zero lift ? Do I need a developer with express tones ?
@@MyName-bp3ch No worries. You do need a developer for them to work - I would always advocate the brands allocated developer…boring I know but those chemists know their stuff. There’s a video on my channel about mixing hair colour with different brands developers.
Ok leaving out the task of color removal for now. I used the pravana zero lift with Dark mahagony express tone . 10 minutes. So on the black base it did very little, except on the skull / root area I do see some color but not much on the hair as such. Should I try the express gold tone over this to give some lightness ? Or do just wait it out for 4 / 6 weeks and try all over again ?
@@MyName-bp3ch You really won’t see much tone with any of them tbh - they don’t lift the hair, deposit only. I would leave it as is…adding more pigment from any colour will only make it look darker and possible removal even trickier.
For a level 9 that pulls yellow gold with past highlights at a level 8 would you recommend pravana 9 BV w 10 vol?
Or should I use pearl+ash to remedy undesired tones to get to an elegant cool shade .
Roots are a level 5 I do NOT want to budge base.
Will these work w zero dev?
Any formulations and products recommended will be greatly appreciated ❤️ thank you!!!
Hi Amber, thanks for watching. I definitely wouldn’t recommend mixing the Express Tones with 10 volume, it would shift the base and lift. It’s a tricky one formula wise as there are several tones to deal with - I would perhaps suggest starting with a violet formula first to deal with the gold/yellow and go from there. Good luck
@@theworldofcraig sorry typo on my end - ***
With a zero "dev"
So ZERO lift as to not change lowlight or root .
What is the best toner for level 9/10 thats pulling gold/yellow and hints of orange near root ?
I know it should be blue violet but I'm not familiar w pravana line.
In cosmoprof I am not seeing anything with both b/v
Can you recommend a custom formulation w chromosilk or another pravana toner?
Thank you foe your help♡
Ahhhh, I see. In the Express Tones Beige has a blue/violet base - if you see more gold that you want to cancel mix with Violet….and 3/4 parts Clear if you’re on a level 9/10.
I thought they were formulated at a level 8?
Hi Cristian, thanks for watching. That’s right…that’s the official line - if they are processed beyond 15 minutes they can go deeper…and as they are a cream based product I feel the do lay down a lot of pigment of used without Clear.
@@theworldofcraig so just to confirm..you find when using them undiluted and left on for longer then advised that they can deposit up to a level 7?
@@fuoconellevene They appear deeper in comparison to something like Shades EQ…in my opinion. All oxidative hair colour can go darker if left on past the processing guidelines.
I have been using pravana for 18 years and I absolutely LOVE this line!!!!!! ❤️ this is the first video of your I have seen and can't wait to check out more!
Hi Heather, thanks for watching and for your kindness…it’s great to have you along. Yes, it is a brilliant line! 👨🏻🙏🏻🤍
