  • Have you been battling with weeds in your garden? I'm right there with you! Because of using a significant amount of homemade Hot Compost, I inevitably end up with many weeds throughout my garden. And it got me thinking, what's the best way to prevent these weeds from growing? So just as I answer many of the gardening questions I'm stuck on, I designed an experiment! And over the course of a 2 month period, I was able to surface some really amazing results for what methods are most effective at preventing and suppressing weeds in the garden!

I used a chopped straw on my garlic and potatoes. Probably about an inch maybe a bit less. But it’s there for protection and water retention mostly. I DO find what weeds grow around the garlic are easier to pull.
But I’ve resigned myself to a couple of things in my garden 1) pests and weeds can be slowed down but never stopped because it’s part of the biodiversity in the garden; 2) I also know I’ll never have a picture perfect garden - it’s a bit messy like me but still it does great things 😊

Love this! And totally agree that it's not about stopping them but rather having them at a tolerable state - which is going to vary for each of us!

Please do another experiment like this.
Two beds planted with crops. One is weeded constantly. The other isn't. See how they all grow. How do they taste after harvested. How much water can each bed hold moisture.

New subscriber here - Thanks for the helpful and inspiring content! I really enjoy how detail oriented and relaxing your videos are. I had never considered that I love weeding my garden as well, so seeing you express that led to me embracing it as well, which was rather cathartic for me.

Just a question, does either )or both) of the plastic covers also destroy or limit soil biology? Heat is fine, but sunlight on soils frequently "bakes" the microbial life.
    Personally, I don't know.

That's a great question! I'm not 100% sure on the answer on that one! I would venture to guess the plastic more than the landscape fabric. However I know a lot of farmers use both practices on their farms at different points so I don't think it causes any significant damage!

Great experiment. You are awesome for doing these and sharing your results so I (we) don’t have too! I’m wondering if when you put the plant in the landscape fabric( in the hole) if it would struggle as I think it would heat the soil? What are your thoughts?

I've used weed fabric before and, surprisingly enough, it is actually cooler under it than under straw (which I've also used) or even bare ground. Living Traditions Homestead also has a video where they show the temperature difference with their weed fabric. Good question and I wish you luck with your future endeavors. :)

@@gwendyrose8905 that is great to know. Thank you for sharing your experience :). I might give that a try where my ground cherries were last year. I think I’ve already pulled thousands of seedlings and there’s a ton more!

That's a great question Kelley! It will definitely heat things up a bit. Which, that can be a good sign for some crops like tomatoes and peppers but maybe want to avoid for others such as brassicas! Only way to find out is with a little experimenting :D

I was wondering if you have a weed where you are called "bindweed" a member of the morning glory family convolvulus. I have actually always found weeding relaxing too, but this is one weed once you have it is beyond belief. Has anyone out there found a way to get rid of it?

I've got a few invasive species in my area but I usually just hand pull them before they can spread too much

My local Extension Office Horticulturist’s advice for anyone with bindweed: “Move to a different home.” Lol he said it jokingly but it was his way of saying good luck.
