    I just use HDR it works world's better for me but over exposer brings the subject more into focus so I'll try it

    Thanks! Love how you found a way to use what light you are give n. We are about to do an outdoor festival from 12-6. Any advice for shooting in harsh overhead sunlight, besides praying for some clouds :)

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it's hard to deal with sometimes. Just watch your shadows. If the performers are completely in the sun, then you could get a way with over-exposing a bit in order to have detail in the shadow and then try to recover some highlights in post. Just be thinking about making sure whatever your subject is in each shot is exposed well and if other things are over-exposed, that's okay.

    Very good Brent. Have you done a video on shooting concert inside with all the bright and flashing lights and from a photo pit as well as a pass for backstage? I have such a job coming up, would like your thoughts if you have done one of those. Thanks.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately I don't have a video about that. A lot of the principles are the same, though indoors you'll likely want a faster lens, and just make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the subjects if they're moving a lot. I've found that sometimes I can get away with shutter speeds as slow as 1/100-1/80th if they're not moving too much. Your iso will likely be high, so you can either embrace the grain or clean it up in post. If there are super bright lights on the subjects and the rest of the place is dim, then expose for the highlights (which will totally darken the rest of the image) otherwise your subjects will likely be way over exposed.

    Good Stuff! For the backlighting are you going center weighted metering or multi-point..Matrix? metering and just adding compensation as needed..or D: None of the Above?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 місяці тому

      I usually keep it center weighted and then put it in manual mode with auto iso and adjust the exposure compensation on the fly as needed.

    How do you compensate for people outdoor In bight sun and they are until a tent of covering. Thinking you would use flash to get proper exposure on the face?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому

      I've never used flash at a concert. I usually expose for the subjects, so if the background ends up overexposed or blown out, then I'll try to recover the highlands as best I can, but to me personally, it's usually more important to have the subjects properly exposed.

    Do you use lens filters when you're shooting outdoor festivals? I carry a set of filters including ND filters and gradients, but I can't remember the last time I actually used them. I shoot in RAW and probably safe in the knowledge that I can do so much in post should I need to that the thought of putting on a lens filter doesn't occur to me at the time of shooting. If it did then I'd be screwing and unscrewing filters all day long since I tend to move around the venue a lot rather than staying long periods in the same place.

    • @BrentHall

    Hey Brent. Really love your videos. Your way of doing things is just awesome. I have a small suggestion for a future video that might really help amateurs like me out here... That is if you deem it fit and have the time to cover such a topic.
    Kindly give us your rationale for picking some of your photography gear - specifically your cameras and lenses. My main concern boils down to things like the camera you use. Out here, we get told things like "It's not about the camera you pick or the lens you pick, it's about your skills as a photographer". While I do appreciate that skills are considerably important, it still doesn't explain why you went for the Canon EOS-1DX Mark II and not something like the Canon EOS Rebel T6 DSLR. I know, I know...You don't get to shoot in 4K and it's not a full-frame camera. But what we (or let me just be honest and say I) don't get is why you didn't go for these "cheaper" options. I know your gear is better, but you can see how the "It's not about the camera" slogan becomes ironical since the same person we look up to does not use the camera he reviewed and claimed how much he/she loves it.
    Most UA-camrs do review the cheaper and "low-end" cameras, but hardly give enough reasons as to why they never used the cameras after they were done reviewing them. I asked this because after purchasing my Nikon D5300 along with the Nikkor 85mm f1.8G two years back, I feel like a total toddler when I discover that the price tag of your favorite walking lens (the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM) was almost equal to how much I spent on my Nikon D5300 bundle (~$900). And as you might have guessed, it is very easy for me to start saving up for a camera like Brent's (so that my videos can look as cool as his) 😅, but maybe the day I do get it, Brent will have something better.
    Thanks for taking time to read this, and apologies for the long post. I also apologize if you may have covered this specific topic in another video and I didn't get there first. I only recently discovered your channel and I have over 200 videos to watch 😅. I was just compelled to reach out since you once answered one of my questions on another video. I figured it's best to have your channel as my safe haven where I can feel free to ask some of my most disturbing questions because out there, I don't think people would really give much attention to my kinds of questions.
    Once more, thanks a lot.

    Going to start shooting some small outdoor concerts next week. These shows will be taking place in a smallish Park with the band playing under a gazebo. I’ll be able to get pretty close there is a barrier under the gazebo but the bands pretty much play up to the barrier. Still use the 70-200? Or would the 24-70 be more than enough? Note I shoot with a 7dmkii. I’ve shot indoor stuff in a large arena and the 70-200 for me has been overkill and I’ve gotten better shots with the 24-70 IMO.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  5 років тому +1

      For that scenario I think you'd be alright with the 24-70, it sounds like it should cover the bands just fine. I find that when I'm shooting that close from the front, I'm at around 70-100mm or so. and yeah, keep in mind if you're on the 7D2 that the crop factor will give you more range on the long end.

    Can you use dehaze on any over exposed shot to bring back detail? Is that how that works?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  5 років тому +1

      Yes and no. Dehaze is like a big fancy contrast slider, except that radius of the pixels to which it applies contrast is quite large. It won't be able to bring in detail that's not there, so if you blow your highlights out completely then it can't add detail, but if you just have over-exposed highlights with some detail still there, then dehaze can help bring those details out a bit more.
