- The Secret Life and Difficult Final Years of Jack Lord Steve McGarrett Hawaii Five-O.
Jack Lord was an American actor and director, best known for his portrayal of Steve McGarrett in the popular television series "Hawaii Five-O" from 1968 to 1980. Born on December 30, 1920, in New York City, Lord began his acting career on Broadway in the 1940s before transitioning to film in the 1950s. He appeared in several notable films such as "Dr. No" (1962), the first James Bond movie, and "The Hangman" (1964). However, it was his role as the tough and no-nonsense police detective Steve McGarrett in "Hawaii Five-O" that made him a household name. In addition to his acting career, Lord was also an accomplished artist and had exhibitions of his paintings and sculpture. He passed away on January 21, 1998, in Honolulu, Hawaii, but his iconic portrayal of Steve McGarrett continues to inspire and entertain audiences to this day.

I grew up with Jack lord. Looked at his travels with James Bond and Stephen McGarretts journey. I thank all the actors in the Serie Hawaii five- oh. Rest in Peace Jack
He was 48 starting in Hawaii 5-0! I was only 8 but fell in love with him!❤Still feel the start & end music is the BEST of ALL "detective" series. 😊
Lol me too. I'm 62 and was madly in love with him at 8 too. Oh yeah the theme music was awesome. Only Mission Impossible music can equal it. How I wanted to look and dance like the Hawaiian girl on it.
Haha! I’m also 62 and I had the biggest crush on him!
Me too, I was 7 in ‘68…Loved the series back then and still do and the theme was/ is the best!🥰😍
That's because The Ventures totally RULE!
I’m 34; I wasn’t born before it was off the air for new seasons and had a crush on him 😂😂😂 I just told my SIL if he were alive did be crushing on a man that’s 104 lol at the time idk he would have been that this year lol
The OG Hawaii Five-O was one of the best series ever and Jack Lord was a huge reason. His estate donated 40 million dollars to Hawaii Community Fund.
Loved 5-0 as a kid. That theme song and his swagger was inspiring to a young boy. RIP Mr. Lord.
I never missed an episode of Hawaii Five O. RIP Jack Lord you were an awesome Steve McGarrett.
YES Agree 💯. I watch reruns every Friday. 😊 💕
What network? I don't see it on MeTV...@@ShugerPlum0263
He so gorgeous young looking man
Back in the day, me too and every single week I just had to spin around with him during that opening scene where he turns around on that balcony lol. Oh for those wonderful innocent childhood days again. The funny thing about this show though, is that although it was deemed fit for children to watch, it dealt with a lot of adult themes which I guess I didn't really quite grasp as a kid back then but when I see it now I can understand it a lot better and despite all of the technology we have today, things haven't really changed much in terms of how people behave, relationships etc and shows like this often reflect it in an entertaining kind of a way. Many thanks.
@@JohnCashin I have good memories of the show so much so that I have the original theme tune as my ringtone.
Finding this vid was so random, I have been DVRing Hawaii Five-0 starting four weeks back, starting with S1E1. What a great show compared to the garbage on TV today. Thanks for bringing the character of Steve McGarrett alive.
RIP Mr. Jack Lord.
Jack Lord was also in the first James Bond movie, "Dr. No." He played the CIA character, Felix Leiter.
There is a life size bronze bust of Jack Lord at the Kahala Mall in Honolulu
I couldn't imagine meeting my son only one time
He played Felix Leither of the c.i.a. in the 1st James Bond movie called Dr. No.
That's correct, he wanted equal billing with Sean Connery for his character to return in Goldfinger so he was replaced. That's showbiz
Another fun fact: when the second Star Trek pilot was made, Gene Roddenberry wanted Jack Lord to play Captain Kirk.
Jack Lord was my neighbor in Kahala, Hawaii. I last saw him just before he passed away. He has snow white hair and his wife was helping him into their car.
Lucky you Laakona!
Good Video. I'm A Fan & Was Lucky Enough To Watch The Pilot In Real Time When I Was 10 & Still Watch The Series On DVD. Thank You.
He definitely had brass ones, - wanting equal billing with Sean Connery as Felix in Bond films, and wanted a piece of ownership in the show when offered the Captain Kirk role in Star Trek. He eventually got what he wanted in HFO, though it did shackle him to that role the rest of the way.
amazing series, loved flash of color, flash of death, with don knight
He's the ONLY Steve McGarrett
I watch the show from when it first started in 1968 until it ended in 1980 I cried like a baby at the last episode. I love Jack Lord dearly and I wish he was my husband. Thanks for the upload you guys why enjoyed it.
Jack Lord was also cast as Felix Leiter in the first James Bond film, Dr. No, opposite Sean Connery.
We used to see him at polo up in Mokuleia in the early 1980s. He always wore a wide-brimmed straw hat, didn't look particularly well to me. Hawaii 5-0 the best cop show, ever!
No mention of Jack’s appearance in the James Bond film “Dr No”
I loved that guy
Wish they would do replays that woyld be great.
Thank you very interesting
This is more of a biography than a secret life. I lived near him in Kahala and could tell you the true secrets. My friends were friends of his.
Ok, so give. What are the true secrets? You can't just drop a bomb like that and not tell us.
@@deedeegreen8338 it's not wise to speak of the dead...
@@faiolapat Then why bring it up?
@@faiolapat thank you. I grew up with him. Let him rest in peace
Good call! Let him be remembered for his professionalism, as a great actor.@@gingerchaney8404
Banging em out like me a STUD...LIKE...MWAA
Even as an 8yr old he was my Prince
Elvis Presley admired Jack Lord and I believe Elvis stayed at Jacks home when in Hawaii!
Book'em Danno!
They shouldn't have done the reboot in 10.
Yea...But I'm still going..ty
Also Felix Leiter, CIA agent in Dr. No.
But then came the new Steve McGarrett ... Alex O'Laughlin came to take the role in the Hawaii 5-0 reboot in 2010. Both series were excellent, but I enjoyed the new one much more
The new one was complete trash and quickly failed.
Uhhh, the recent 5-0 had a run from 2010-2020, and has been syndicated on TV nonstop for the past 3 years so I wouldn't exactly call it a failure, gerry ...@@geraldscott4302
I remember Felix lighter also
He was so incredibly vain.
For sure, he's NOT the "only"..."vain"...actor, ever!! Or,...PERSON,...for that matter! And, probably, won't be the LAST one, either!
"All men posess some vanity, within themselves...."-unknown.
So, 'judge not,'....
THE one and ONLY Steve McGarrett!!
He was an awesome guy I love watching him on Hawaii Five-0 he will never be forgotten. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
My husband and I recently started watching the original Hawaii Five-O. At first we were just tuning in for the sake of nostalgia but then we realized that it’s a quality, classic show with really interesting plots! The memories are fun and it’s refreshing to watch a show that was filled with good characters of all races WITHOUT all of the woke messaging shoe horned in to every episode. It was a clean show, too. 👍🤟
Well said 👏👏
Book'em Dano, he'll say the catch phrase to his Assistant Danny, once the culprit is apprehended for crimes against humanity.
I love jack lord he was a fantastic actor great the shows now is too violent yes there was violence in this but not like now I also like him in in the one episode of the untouchables
I am watching it on PlutoTV right now!
Easily the best writers in TV history. Every episode mattered and had high stakes.
Jack was great in Hawaii 5-0, and I am sorry that his private life had some very hurtful times. But when someone has a child they should make every effort to be there and support that child. I was a single parent and saw what it did to my son, when he realized that his father didn't care about him. Jack should have been there for his son.
agree.. he was also difficult to work for on Hawaii 5 0

Me, my brother, and our Dad watched Hawaii Five-O on the couch in the den every week. Happy times growing up in the 70's. Still the best cop show ever. Adam-12 was another classic.
Steve McGarett . Not Steve Garrett . Bad narration .
Same here.
I loved Hawaii Five-0 and never missed an episode. Jack Lord's McGarrett was a very intense and engaging character.
My parents use to say. That's a handsome guy. That's a handsome guy. He could act too. I know he got academy , stellar, emmy, Nobel and a bunch more. He should have a star on Hollywood as well. His acting was impectable!!!!!!
@@julianathompson173 --
Handsome Jack Lord was also an accomplished artist, having at least one of his pieces in the Museum of Modern Art.
He was almost Cpatain Kirk, but asked for to much $$. Loved him as McGarrent but glad Shatner got the role.
William Shatnet was a guest star on the original Hawaii Five 0. And boy did Shatner do a great job 👏 Very excellent acting and plot. He was bound to become a star and hey Shatner is still going strong 💪 🙌🫡🥰😍😘
@@betseyfelton8303 Yes, Shatner was great on that H5O episode, which was after TOS was cancelled. I agree, He is a legend and a great actor.
Jack Lord Rest In Peace.
I loved him. Watched every episode, still watch it today.
The reboot SUCKS 🙈 Book 'em Danno 😜
Jack Lord was known to me as Stoney Burke, had a Dodge Pick Up truck and hauled his horse for the series! He was a rodeo star back in that time period! Yes, Jack became a big black and white star in Hawaii 5 O!
I'm 62 and I remember watching the show with my parents when I was a kid. I remember thinking this guy must really have been a police detective in real life because he was so believable to me. A great actor he was...
What about Felix in James Bond Dr No.
The original Steve McGarrett and for me the original and best Felix Leither of the C.I.A
Totally agree. Too bad he only played Felix Lighter in one film.
@@stevecoleman2250 he demanded equal billing with Sean Connery for his character to return in Goldfinger, and equal pay.... producers said no. That's why they changed the actor so often
If only Ed Bishop(UFO) or Shane Rimmer(Thunderbirds) could have played Felix
@@stevecoleman2250 Shane turned up in You Only Live Twice and The Spy Who Loved Me and Ed Bishop was in Diamonds Are Forever
@@peterfranks6243 Actually Ed Bishop and Shane Rimmer were the communication guys at Hawaii Station in the opening scene of “ You Only Live Twice”.
I still watch reruns 5 episodes on Friday
9 minutes was too short to do this subject justice. It was rushed and I wouldn’t recommend it.
During the last season of Hawaii 5 -0, MacGarrett seemed tired, thinner and weeker.
Love Hawaii Five O! Jack Lord played his part well, great Actor, his legacy lives on. Great upload.👍🏽💗
I grew up watching Jack lord in the 1970s
Jack Lord with his smart hair cuts & suits so smart they all came with PhD for smartness.
Love this show ❤
Born and raised New York City he did good for himself God bless
In Malaysia,1968, I was 14 & started watching this series from 1971. Tough & no nonsense character Steve Mc'Garret. Miss u.man.
I was born in 1968, my parents have told me I started watching the show regularly with my Dad from about 2 years old in Toronto, Canada.
One thing I really admired about Jack’s role on Hawaii 5-0 was how much respect he had for his other actors on the show.
I knew him very well. You need to get your facts straight before presenting things like this. You all make me sick.
Thanks for objecting to the video…I stopped watching it immediately…
Well why don’t you tell his story to get the facts right I liked Jack Lord in Hawaii Five O great actor and very good looking .
@@lindalue4504 Because she has probably never met him. People love to associate themselves with celebrities.
Do they 🤔🤔
@@deedeegreen8338 I was going to be nasty but one thing I learned from my Uncle Jack, just ignore people. There will always be someone who tries to start something. I am not one to get excited over actors, etc they put their pants on just like everyone else.
Hawaii 5 0 was ahead of its time. Everything they did n show is happening now.
He was a teetotaler- not an alcoholic.
Nobody has hair like jack lord
This video is poorly done, sad butt true!!! 😬
Although it was not a big part, this did not mention his part in "Dr. No," the first important James Bond flick. He was "Felix Leiter" who was a badass!
Loved the show and jack was my favourite😊
Jack was also offered the role of Captain Kirk. He got greedy. Wanted way WAY to much $$$.
He also was in the Untouchables in the Jake Lingle episode with Robert Stack
We knew a guy Walter Brown who did casting for 50 for many years told some interesting stories was also a ham radio operator and ran a local electronics store in downtown Glen Burnie
❤❤❤Rip ⚘️ 🌷 🙏
Jack lord😢😢😢
6:43…….you said “Steve Garrett” 😳
Thank you Classic Hollywood Legend for posting. I was born in 1968 and started watching Hawaii Five-O as a child because my father was a huge fan. I became a fan of the show after watching my first episode. I loved the theme song, the cast, Hawaii, and of course Jack Lord.
Steve McGarrett was the coolest cop of all time. I have the CD collection and have seen every single episode dozens of times of the past 50+ years.
Anytime I'm changing channels and come across a Five-O episode I can figure out the episode in a matter of seconds (like most of you).
Not a fan of the reboot of the series even though I haven't seen one episode. I couldn't care less. There are just some things in life you don't replicate. RIP Jack Lord, James MacArthur, Kam Fong and Gilbert Lani Zulu Kauhi. Thank you all for the great memories!
I first saw Jack Lord in 12 o'clock High. I've never looked at his filmography. Jack was a different soul.
This series like
Magnum P.I.
Were brilliant there should be a replay channel for these top ❤❤❤series 🙏
“How’s McGarretts hair” ❤❤
My mom went the same way; 7 in 7. 7 stages in 7 years, died of congestive heart failure - the heart is the last thing to quit working.
You forgot he played the CIA agent Felix in James Bond "Dr. No".
Excellent actor who unfortunately couldn't leave the hooch alone
Fifth of scotch a day. Heavy smoker too 3 packs of camel cigarettes
The first Felix Leiter in the James Bond series - inexplicably omitted here....
What about Lee Majors, Larry Hagman and Michael J. Fox?
Jack lord, rest in peace greatly missed but not forgotten 🙏 💔 😢 😔
"Only met his sone once"? Like, why, maing?
at 5:35.... a member of the House of Burgesses was a "BurJess" , NOT a Bur-guess.....
sorry, 5:25...
My dad was born in December of 1920
Loved him as Steve McGarrett
Steve Garrett? Yeah I heard that!
Something seems wrong with the statement that he was devastated by the loss of his 13 year old son, who he had met only once. 8:08 I can't help but wonder if he went to the funeral? It's none of my business, but I most certainly hope so.
Did anybody else notice Elizabeth Montgomery standing next to him in that picture at 4:40? Damn, she was beautiful.
Interesting!
♥️ 🙏 ♥️ 🙏 ♥️🙏♥️ 🙏 ♥️🙏
a few years ago i heard that jack was so mean to his co-star zulu (kono)
I always thought Jack Lord was the best and better McGarrett. Because he could play it best. Then came the series from 2000. That was the only way the main actor could do it, and he wasn't quite up to McGarrett's original. The main actor didn't fit in with the time being and also not with the character. Jack Lord could and always will be the better McGarrett. And that's what you saw at the end. Because the McGarrett from 2000 had reached its physical limits. That's why I think and found that Jack Lord was the better McGarrett. Even so, he was the better actor for the role. Not the Australian. Sorry to the Australian. It wasn't you. The better one was Jack Lord
I still watch Hawaii 5 o. They kept his hair neat. I believe it was a weave and hair pieces. He dressed sharp and had a model body. U can tell he drank , but who didn't drink smoke and do drugs in hollywood????????
He usually played a bad guy in guest roles. He was such a good guy on Hawaii Five-0. Big difference.
I never saw him play anything but the bad guy side on all the westerns he was in. Hawaii 5 O was the only show I know of where he was a good guy. I have issues with Hawaii, so never cared for it at all.
He had the coolest hair.
Did you know it was at the time laughingly referred to as the most expensive hairpiece in Hollywood? He was completely bald.
One actress on Hawaii Five-0 said he wore a toupee , but an actor who routinely guest starred in the show said no , it was his own hair , he just sprayed a lot of hair spray in it , or earlier on , hair gel , which I agree with him . Because if you watch a scene from a fourth season episode called " R&R&R" , he's walking out on a tarmac at the airport to meet someone and his hair is just really blowing in the wind , just like it's his own . If it were a toupee , it would have blown off , or loose at the front . Even if he did wear a toupee , he wouldn't have been the only entertainer at that time to wear one , like Burt Reynolds , John Wayne , Frank Sinatra , Bing Crosby , etc. The first three guys listed I have seen pictures and early movie footage of them with thinning hair so I knew they wore toupees , not Jack Lord though .
@@briannichols4807 it wasn't a toupee. It was a full wig.
@@kirbywaite1586 Is there a picture of him completely bald ? I have never seen it . Even pictures of him younger from before Five-0 he always looked like he had a full head of hair .
@@briannichols4807 Considering his vanity I doubt very much there are any bald pictures of him. If you look closely his hairline is very implausible for a person his age. He was in his late 50s in Hawaii 5-O.
sounds like he lived a good life - privileged youth , successful career in television ......
We waited all week to gear the 5-0 music intro. ThIS man was The MAN.
Jack also played as Felix Lighter in James Bond Dr. No.
I would think losing your son you only met once was "less devastating " because he barely knew him and no real attachment .
It was guilt that destroyed him.
Lord oh lord, what's happened to Jack?
He died ... 😮
Hardly difficult
