    Both Windows and Linux have their own advantages. I use Windows for work and Linux at home. There is certain software I need for work for which there is not a Linux equivalent, and certain software where the Windows versions are just better. Linux, though, is far more customizeable, has great access to tons of software, and I prefer Cinnamon and KDE over the Windows desktop. In my experience, Windows 7, 10 and 11, along with the apps I run, have been very stable for me. Linux Mint and the apps I run on it have been stable, but not quite as stable as Windows in my experience. Arch updates have created many issues for me over time, but it seems like it has gotten better over the last 2-3 years.

    I am IT professional and that is why I choose Windows as my daily system because I don’t have much time to make Linux desktop work well. I prefer Linux only as a server os. Even redhat says on their website what their workstation os is not for production use! That explains a lot. Mostly Linux sucks as desktop os

    Funnily enough, i started my journey in Linux in 2014 with Arch Linux, for the sole reason that i couldn't stop burning dozens of hours a day playing videogames in Windows. From my perspective, having the entire digital entertainment industry actively avoiding you (aka Linux) seemed like a good plan. Finally! My brain could be productive for its first time ever... Then Valve started commiting new things and changes in WINE so they could further develop Proton, which started a moderate interest in Linux for gaming in the following years.
    The greatest bamboozle i have ever experienced if you ask me.

      isn't it just absolutely incredible how far linux gaming has come over just the last two, three, four years??
      i've seen benchmarks where translated vulkan calls were consistently outperforming straightup dx on windows!!
      the only problem we have now are kernel-level anti cheats.

    It's two years later and there is a lot of drama around Windows 11. At least some of it is deserved, no doubt about it: Recall, mandatory online accounts, silent "upgrade" to OneDrive, ads, e-waste. I am contemplating my options once Windows 10 EOL comes: upgrade (and perhaps debloat) or move to Linux. I guess I'll find out next October, and probably only then. WSL2 relieved a lot of pressure where it comes to development in a Unix-like environment, especially with how well (if not seamlessly) it integrates with the host OS. I've used all of Windows, MacOS and Linux (Ubuntu) on the desktop, often simultaneously. They all have their "good, bad an ugly" aspects, and it comes and goes for each of them as time goes by. We are yet to see real corporate Linux drama but it is going to happen at some point.

    So today I installed windows and Mac on virtual machine because I need photoshop. I used to be a magazine designer and now I’m opening an online shop. I don’t want to spend time learning gimp. I use gimp sometimes but I’m efficient on photoshop so I’d rather use a virtual machine to edit pictures instead of learning and wasting time on gimp.

    Okay, so you use Windows or Linux based on "preference". But what informs this preference? It's not arbitrary, unless you're a silly person. Usually it's work related. Or existing familiarity and ease-of-use. Or entertainment needs (gaming). Or technological necessities.
    For many developers and coders, familiarity with linux is essential, and using linux as one's primary operating system accelerates that learning/familiarity process.
    There are also philosophical reasons as well. For the same reasons many might avoid Google products, one might avoid MSFT products. And for the same reasons one might want to support small and local business and avoid big box and big online stores, one might want to support open source projects.
    Of course, it's also probably good not to be too ideological about these things. As much as we might dislike Google and MSFT and their overbearing power, both are major players in the tech space and cannot be avoided.

    Maybe so - I can imagine most people don't like to learn something new and spend the time and live with the initial frustrations, but I would have thought those willing to switch are tech savvy enough to be of the "tech-learning mindset" and so stick with Linux. Almost all people telling their tale in their switch to Linux express great happyness with their choice, boomerangs are few and far between.

    I'm watching you (mainly on Odysee) for a long time now, and I can't shake the feeling that you're trying to be a "voice of reason" in the Linux community while completely missing the mark by going overboard every single time. There's a lot of drama and preaching in the way you present things, and you exaggerate the negatives about the target of your repeated scorn: the Linux community. I don't really get it. unless you're just trolling Linux people for views.
    First of all, I don't see as much hatred from the Linux community against Windows as you're trying to portray. The way you portray it makes it seem like just being a part of the Linux community is being part of a lynch mob. It's as if you're deliberately pushing the worst possible narrative about the "Linux community".
    Secondly, Linux is only the third most used OS on the desktop, by far. Is it so hard to understand that people feel a lot more protective and defensive about it compared to Windows which has like 90% of the market share? Linux is that much closer to irrelevance, lack of support etc. than Windows ever was. Of course we are defensive about it and want to grow its market share and mind share. We want our choice to be preserved. What do you think about monopolies? Good or bad? Or is that just "philosophical reasons" that "nobody cares about"? How naive.
    Thirdly, and speaking of philosophical reasons, I find it incredibly disingenuous to say that nobody cares. I suppose you'd say the same thing about free speech, privacy rights, right to repair etc. Nobody cares? Sure, let's just let big tech run over everything and be afraid to speak up or show any bit of passion when trying to promote something that gives us a way out, and a way forward.
    If you want to be a voice of reason you could give these points some respect, understanding and consideration, and come up with a viewpoint that is actually balanced instead of this superficial take on things.
    And no I do not think proprietary software is necessarily evil, but I do think Free Open Source Software is incredibly and crucially important in this day and age. And yes, for many of us that fact alone makes Linux as an open source OS superior to Windows and Mac, but again no I don't think everyone who has other priorities and chooses Windows or Mac is automatically stupid or evil. It's just that this doesn't make philosophical reasons illegitimate, stupid or evil either! And when you downplay or even insult their importance let's just say it doesn't reflect well on you.

    • @KentsTechWorld
      @KentsTechWorld  2 роки тому +1

      1. Linux is big tech, and Linux is being used to hinder free speech or used by companies that try to sencor you. And if you could see all the comment I get you will see that a good part of Linux people are like that, and the once that do speak up in linux for the most part is not nice people, so that's what people see and hear.
      2. Your comment just proves my point.
      3. I am not trying to be the voice of reason, I am telling it as it is, how some or allot of people experience it, so then people hopefully would think about the things I talk about.

      @@KentsTechWorld
      1. If Linux is big tech then everything big tech uses is, including email, the TCP/IP stack, various web standards etc. Doesn't really make sense. Linux wasn't born out of big tech, but largely out of the community and it wouldn't even exist as se know it if it weren't for the philosophical motivations (the GNU project).
      2. How am I proving your point? I never even criticized this guy's decision to switch back to Windows. I even acknowledged not everyone has the same priorities when choosing an OS. That's what I mean when I say you tend to go overboard and exaggerate. Not everyone who has philosophical reasons or more passion about it than an average Windows user is automatically a lynching hater denying anyone freedom to think for themselves and use what they like.
      3. Maybe your comment section doesn't reflect the entire community because you tend to be very confrontational to Linux community in general and so probably attract the worst of the vocal minority. Then you double down and it's a vicious cycle. I wish you would just acknowledge that there are legitimate motivations other than the superficial and technical that don't automatically make someone a stupid hater and all the other things you call them. That's all.

      @KentsTechWorld  2 роки тому +1

      @@DanijelOps Linux is sponsored mostly by big tech.
      If you can't see how you are proving my point i cant help you.
      Here is the thing, i been and am on all kind of other places then my own comment section, in fact i am only here when i am bored and need a laugh. I look at how allot of interaction is being done on redit, forums, blogs, articles, dev logs, other videos, twitter, facebook and so on. And if you look at all that, you see a sad trend of toxic behavior and elitism from Linux people, may not be how most are, but it's what people see the most of when going those places, so if people see mostly negativity even if that's not the majority, they would think that's how most people are, and that's not good for anyone.
      If you think i am combative, then it's you putting those feelings in to it, i am just stating some fact's, what others are saying and making a bit of fun of it for entertaining reasons, as most people would see.
      I don't hate or dislike anyone in any places, it's the internet, all just random people with random ideas, and i am in my right to challenge those ideas as you are mine. The sad fact is that's not the case with allot of Linux people, and i have seen how linux have slowly turned in to a cult like place for a lot of people, and that i want to do something about for sure.
      Look at it this way, 20 years ago we would not have this talk, it would be "what can i do to make you try linux again" "oh i see why you don't run it, do you want to talk about why i do" "i see your point, but i don't agree with some" "why and how do you not see linux as a political thing" and so on. you get what i am saying :)

      @DanijelOps 2 роки тому +3

      @@KentsTechWorld Big tech sponsors it because they need it, but they can't fully control it or lock it down due to licensing. That's the key, and in case of GPL licensing comes directly from philosophical motivations. Quite simply, Linux wouldn't even be a contender if it weren't for the philosophical factors. So you can at least understand a part of where the philosophically motivated are coming from.
      "If you can't see how you are proving my point i cant help you."
      Ah, only if you consider any opposition to be proving your point, and I'm barely even opposing your main point: that there are overly extreme cultists. I just think it is worth pointing out that they are only a vocal minority instead of portraying the entire community as being that way, and that you aren't helping by completely dismissing philosophical reasons as legitimate. Why not meet them half way, diffuse the situation a bit?
      You argued before that "Linux is just a tool", and how silly we are for bringing philosophical points into it. Yes it is a tool, but imagine if you bought a lawn mower and it came with strings attached. You're not allowed to borrow it to a friend, take it apart, modify it or fix it as you see fit etc. Imagine if this was a world in which this kind of a deal was predominant.
      Some people then come along and say "to hell with this, it's a bad deal, here's a lawn mower and we're selling it with no strings attached, it's yours to do with as you please". Are these people ideological zealots for daring to suggest this deal as a better one, even that it might make the world a bit better? I think not. Neither are we who consider such points when choosing an OS.
      I hear you that there are people who take it too far with their rhetoric, but we aren't helping if we just shoot back and in the process completely dismiss even the legitimate parts of their reasoning.
      I don't like DistroTube calling proprietary software as "proprietary garbage". It was always so offputting to me, and I don't think licensing is a moral issue (it's basically contracts, you can offer whatever terms you like). But I wont dismiss everything he says on the subject just because of his toxic rhetoric. He's right to take philosophical matters into account, he's just taking it too far.
      Anyway, sorry for being long winded again. I guess I said what I wanted to say.

    I think a large part of the issue is that a lot of the older Linux crowd got into it because of FOSS and as that has slowly become less and less of an issue (as can be seen by Ubunutu and many other distros only maintaining a preference for FOSS but still willing to make propitiatory nowadays). DT is very much a part of this crowd and thus for him it is a political issue, while everyone else has moved on and just doesn't care. There are many reasons to use Linux nowadays, but it's not the FOSS fight which is pushing people towards Linux, it is privacy concerns or ads in your startmenu doing this..

    • @KentsTechWorld
      @KentsTechWorld  Рік тому

      As one of that "old" linux crowd started in the late 90's, i can say that most people did not "get in to" linux cos of FOSS, it was mostly for experiment, tired of windows or did not like it as a OS and so on. The hole FOSS elitism is kinda new i would say the last 12ish years and have become really potent the last 7 or so years with youtube and social media really going in to effect.
      Back then you learned about linux from other people and then you exposed others to it, then in about 2005ish the internet kinda became the place the Linux nerds gathered and then the FOSS or FSF people really got in to it and slowly infested the Linux community. you see that a lot in how Linux youtubers are, youtuber that are new to linux (10 to 12 years or less) are like you just said, the older once are not. They still see linux as a tool or a alternative and not a savor or something that is going to save the IT world and things like that. Yes people back then was debating what MS did and do and some hated the company, but never it's users, the last 10ish years, the FOSS people move that to hate the companies, the devs and the users of anything non linux.
      I remember debates about how bad MS was or how buggy windows was, but never did we attack the user or saw them as being less then us, just that they was in a situation where they had no choice and we wish they had :)
      So people like DT is a product of the new wave of Linux fanboys, and not the old :)

    Tools are tools. I'm not sure what you were doing from 1995 - 2008 but Windows folks (along with Microsoft) are not the angels that you say they were and are. It's like saying a husband can beat his wife but his wife has to still be nice and obediant to him. Today is much different than it use to be and Microsoft isn't the great Satan really but to dismiss the beatings a lot of us got from 1995 until Microsoft changed their tactics is disingenuous. At 53, having used a lot of operating systems (not distros) ... everything from NeXT and OS/2 ... every Win version and tons of Linux distros ... I believe use the best tool for the job. But MacOS users have no halo, Windows users have no halo and Linux users have no halo. Humans do what they do and take everything personally. But to toss it just on Linux isn't right. And history does mean something.

    So on one system Solus 4.3 KDE Plasma and Windows 7 dual boot.. the other system ArcoLinux and Windows 10 dual boot... Linux for online stuff and downloading Games to install on Windows ...also Office 2007 in WINE and LibreOffice-fresh.full appimage ... only Windows at Work more Linux at home.. So whatever works for me ... it's not switch from Linux to Windows or Windows to Linux ...you are free to use whatever... Great video TRG

    OK he's an IT professional but he's not a developer, when you need to get things done you can't afford a flaky OS.

      Imagine ricing your desktop just to impress your friends only for the OS to crash right before they entered your bedroom. I can see why you'd stick with Linux.
