In many ways, they nailed the unsettling uncanny valley of Silent Hill and how it’s a tainted, tragic, and warped place (for some). The radio with Silent Hill songs plus DJ Bobby Ricks and what happens to him/the radio afterward, the expanded lore/world/puzzles/side-quests especially and how you actually play the areas rather than them being alluded to in previous games. The game was frequently so pretty (even when some of the character or monster designs were underwhelming). Love Murphy’s experience in the mines and “Monacle Man’s” brief appearance, wish they’d been able to fully realize their vision…the proposed boss battle looked wild! Love that Silent Hill continues to play with the elements/environment for various protagonists too: snow/ice for Shattered Memories, fog for James, (not an element but rust, blood, darkness for Heather), and fog to raining-thunder-lightning filled downpour for Murphy. Beyond the comic book tie-in, I really wanted Officer Cunningham to have a DLC or something akin to Born from a Wish (or a broader incorporated switching pov but they didn’t have the time or resources for a project that vast). I could keep going but by and large I remember Downpour pretty fondly (plus I’m weak for that Silent Hill 4 Easter egg)…can’t wait to watch your playthrough later on. Cheers!
My favourite part in Silent Hill Downpour is near the end where Anne tells Murphy about her father and how she saw him as a monster (the boogeyman) and the Truth and Justice ending (Ending B) where she thanks Murphy for the truth and gets her revenge on George Sewell (the man who killed her father and framed Murphy for it) Fun fact: the Truth and Justice Ending is canon as it’s the same ending as the comic; Anne’s Story where we learn more about Anne Marie Cunningham’s lore and her experience/journey in the town of Silent Hill

It's such a bummer that people still hate on this entry. It's my personal favourite (I confess even over Silent Hill 2). I'd like to believe that the character designs & technical issues were why people tend to criticise it, but that is not true. Fans never even gave it a chance; they'd already decided to write it off because of how much they already hated Homecoming, Origins & the Room.
I just don't like the way the town is presented. Downpour leans super hard into the idea of the town being sentient when that aspect was kept ambiguous in the original games. Hell, I remember the scene where the DJ was saying the town has rules you need to follow, or it'll send monsters. That's not even how the town works lmfao
I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, love every title for its own reasons. I haven't played Downpour since it first came out, and since then I've become a parent myself. And let me tell you, this game hits SO different now. I never realized how many of the sidequests and actual content of this game involve children being killed or abused. (Besides the main story of course) It preys upon that primal fear of wanting to protect your children from the outside world and failing. Parts of this game I used to say "Oh thats so sad." Now have me feeling physically ill thinking about it happening to my boy. (Especially the poor little guy in the Monastery that writes to go home, has his letters confiscated and ends up lobotomized and dead.) With that being said, it also ruined a chunk of this game for me. How can viewing this game through the parental lense have both enhanced it and cheapened it? The revenge theme. I can't get behind it. If someone molested and killed my son, I'd be in Silent Hill for the rest of my life Eating the big plate of revenge with extra gravy, sitting at my table in hell. Every day. I'd never regret what I did to Napier. Not even a little.b
One that has still stuck with me since day one is the side quest where you have to follow the ribbons on the street cause the parent of the child couldn’t deal with the burden of raising a child with severe mental disability.
This will be controversial but . . . I always felt like Silent Hill: Downpour handled the themes of revenge better than The Last of Us: Part II. No one could fault Murphy - whether he himself killed Napier or not - but I never thought the theme was blaming him for wanting it, only showing that becoming obsessed with his revenge (similar to Abby & Ellie) he lost everything - his freedom, his wife, eventually the one person that actually cared for him in prison, without actually helping him come to terms with his loss. & the cycles of violence continued, even though Napier & Sewell never suffered for their crimes (not REALLY).
When i first played this game it gives you a more in depth character about yourself, i kinda remember how i was growing up in Brooklyn NY, you see what you can become if you follow the wrong people. I thank God i did better, gotta do good if you dont believe in church believe in the good you can do you dont go anywhere
I just made it halfway through this game in one sitting and have to say... I have no clue where the hate for this game comes from. With Homecoming I can see where it comes from. I still think it's a good game but like I said.. I see why people don't. With this one though I don't and can honestly say it's critically underrated even.
Uninspired art style, clunky combat mechanics, generic story that tries to replicate SH2, no Akira Yamaoka. Yeah, it deserves all the criticism it gets
The vibe didn’t really fit, the graphic and performance issues really hurt the pacing, and over all the otherworld sections were mainly just walkthroughs and run from the disco ball. But it had some really good ideas and concepts just horribly executed.
The hate comes from weebs. The Western take really fits this game. Even the clunky controls reflect the rough unelegant way a Westerner would normally act in real life
@@satanamogila9251i’m watching this having not played or seen it before and its literally nothing like SH2 if anything the bits that are remotely like it are like Silent Hill in general. Only those who never played nor heard of Silent Hill franchise would love the game, but after those people had finished the game yearning for more, they discovered the original Silent Hill games and then started to get woke and hating the game. Both Homecoming and Downpour are suffering from the same unfortunate criticisms despite they are excellent games! But the problem is the originality. Both games have done nothing wrong except being a Silent Hill game.
