Back in the 1970s my dad and I used to travel on the open ocean. He never went out without an M1 carbine, a 12 gauge shotgun, a 357 magnum and best of all a 30.06 with a scope. We had a fighting chance if attacked.
My mate used to have his boat in the Caribbean and found a way of stashing a few grenades without them being detectable. He thought that these and a few guns worked a treat!
I used to keep a Winchester stainless 12-gauge pump-action loaded with hollow-point slugs for Close Encounters. You can't call the police to save you when you're out at sea
I experienced pirates in the straits of Gibraltar sailing a 200ton steel hull gaff rigged ketch, night time a dinghy full of them snuck up in our wake, luckily somebody on the watch saw and got out the spot light, they dipped off but kept circling us for hours, we weren't permitted to have any personal protection devices onboard not even belonging to the vessel
Piracy is probably the world's oldest profession. The first time someone realized that they could steal your fish, instead of catching their own - pirates. AR15. Couple warning shots in the air, couple warning shots where the captain can see the splashes off his bow, and the clip dump into the helm if they don't turn away hard within 10 seconds. People say you can't win a firefight on the small sailboat but someone with a good ar15 and red dot scope can EASILY put every round into that attacking boat.
I had a similar experience on a sailboat off Sumba Island near Bali, Indonesia. A pirate ship came up on us in the dark. Our captain was an ex British Paratrooper. He had an FN Rifle. The High speed Junk came near to us & displayed much heavier Automatic Rifles. But they went away. There was easier prey I suppose.
Did you have a problem declaring that rifle at every country you checked into? As an American I can buy magazine fed centerfire rifles and have both title 2 and several class 3 firearms. My plan is to relocate to the West coast and I plan on sailing the Pacific. I understand that you are governed by the gun laws from where your boat is flagged, but I have heard that some countries will seize your firearms when you declare them upon arrival. If you decide not to declare them and your vessel is searched you can be charged with gun running and end up in prison. I would like the option to defend myself, and if approached by pirates to just mag dump some tracers to deter them, but I do not want to end up losing a thousand dollar rifle at the first marina I stop at, or end up doing 20 years in a SE Asian prison. Seems like no one either knows or does not want to discuss carrying firearms on board.

Not really worth it when the boat started shooting at them. They make their money via kidnapping and if they have to shoot the dudes on the boat then there is no money to be had. Plus continuing on even so means some of the pirates might lose their lives. That is if they were even armed with guns themselves and not weaponized farm equipment.
My guess is that none of the respondees have ever been in that position. I have, plus in a sailboat at sea, and you will do whatever is necessary to keep a boat at bay (pun). Shooting over their heads was EXACTLY the right thing to do (even with a 12 gauge), and that's what is done by both tankers, and even the Navy, as a warning not to come closer. You can't wait until they board to see if they are friendly or not.
Oh, I thought they'd let you know how friendly they are over a cup of coffee! Just kidding.......you can't let them get close enough to shoot at you or get onto your boat........if you do, your done for.
At that range 00 Buck will spread nicely across the deck while still tearing up anything it hits, and a few slugs through the hull at the waterline will get the point across nicely. Personally I'd use my AR-10 in .308 and just pepper the waterline of the front of the hull

Same thing that would have happened if he had it and they tried to board: he'd be dead. Shotgun is no match for a rifle, or several rifles, that can engage you at longer range. They wouldn't have even had to get close to riddle everyone on board full of holes.

They likely had way more weaponry than the sailboat. They just didn't feel like a shootout. It is absolutely amazing that there are barbarians out there. Special forces needs to have decoy sailboats like this out there, and just annhilate the pirates with rockets. First draw them in close and have dummies on the deck, special forces hiding below behind armor.
@@someotherdude Do you really think they couldn't outgun this sailor? If they were real pirates they wouldn't have turned away, given him a few scare rounds of an AK47 and forced him to step down.
The pirates would not hear the rack of the 12 gauge. A pump shotgun should already be racked with one in the chamber in advance before the need arises. The 12 gauge is outgunned by an AK AR FN or HK91 at this distance.
In terms of the whole AR vs shotgun argument: firing from a platform that is pitching and rolling at an adversary who is on a platform that is also pitching and rolling - I think the shotgun would give you a better chance of getting shots on target.
In the 56ft Swan I was deckhand on, we only had solid rounds for the stainless steel pump shotgun that was carried. I guess the theory was more about damaging the other boat than peppering them with shot. Not necessarily to sink it but to make a dangerous impression.

Absolutely beautiful!! I'm sure you were using double ought buckshot or slugs, but an AR-15 spreading lead across their bow would have gotten the point across alot faster.

That is what I call : a Man!... Congratulation, Captain... You saved your life, your crew, and your boat... :-) From Brussels, with Love (and maximum Respect, for what you did)
In my humble opinion the actions of this guy saved all their lives. The alternative I believe would have been compliance, then theft of their vessel and probable death of all on board, because why would the pirates allow them to live. A very scary incident for all concerned.
That is pure speculation. If we look at a real life incident that is similar, we need only look at Peter Blake. He decided that he was going to be a BFH when pirates boarded his boat. he grabbed his rifle and shot one of the pirates in the hand. This resulted in the pirates shooting him dead, stabbing two other crew members...and still only taking an outboard motor and a few watches from the crew. If he had kept his cool, the most likely scenario would have been the theft of the goods, but not loss of life or injuries. was that outboard really worth it?
And right next to that shotgun would be my rifle. The shooter knows at that range he can't do any damage with a shotgun, so it was smart to fire those warning shots.

AR15. Couple warning shots in the air, couple warning shots where the captain can see the splashes off his bow, and the clip dump into the helm if they don't turn away hard within 10 seconds. When we go out dressed like you are essentially asking for it
I had a similar experience on a sailboat off Sumba Island near Bali, Indonesia.

Never give warning shots.
Serious pirates intent on taking your vessel will laugh as their rounds cut through you.
A pump shotgun is the most versatile weapon out there. I always carry birdshot, buckshot and slugs if off shore.
I an’t gonna give them the choice never ever let them board.
And right next to that shotgun would be my rifle. The shooter knows at that range he can't do any damage with a shotgun, so it was smart to fire those warning shots.
