Yes, the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) isn't actually meant to be turned on during flight. It acts like more of a backup/extra battery. Like, for example, once you shut down your engines at the gate you would turn on the APU which powers the plane whilst the engines are turned off. Since, the engines actually use by-passing air, which goes through whole system and then that creates mechanical power. Therefore providing sufficient power to power the aircraft. Also, if you were to lose any engines, or if the main battery were to shut off for some reason, you would turn on the APU for backup power.
*[BTW: The "airplane-o-meter" is called the artificial horizon just so you know :)]*
