Best tattoo videos by far. I've watched close to 1000, and you are by far the best. Your narrative is detailed, and the video quality is great. I like how you speak as an artist and how your descriptions reference painting. You are a true artist and your technique is beautiful to watch.
you are a fantastic artist and teacher! I just started tattooing at my apprenticeship and I have always been told when color packing not to go over the same area more than 2 times in one session. I notice in your color blending you go over these areas a lot more than I thought was advisable in order to prevent tearing up the skin. I've only just begun doing silhouettes and solid colors, and I am having a hard time getting solid and even coverage without going over the same area multiple times. Can you give me some advice?
Great job. I love the explanation! Color is something I'm working on for sure. Black and grey is really my strong suit, but becoming just as comfortable with color is a goal of mine.
I am always amazed at how clear, concised and at-level your videos are for me. You're making me better everyday and show true respect of the art by sharing best practices.
I always feel a sense of satisfaction when working from light to dark, lol. Since we are always taught to do the opposite, it's almost like I'm pulling something off. Eternal Plum is a great color for this technique, easy to use with hot AND cold colors. Great use of that Seafoam, a very under-used color.
Thats awesome that you pointed out feeling the vibration of the skin when tattooing. I have been doing that for quite some time now with my black & grey work. helps me to create smoother transitions and fade outs with grey wash. the minute the skin vibrates i know the needle is working then adjust accordingly to get the desired effect. Good key point to share with everyone!
Guy Aitchison talked about reading the vibrations with your stretching hand in his book and it's been a great tool for me as well, to read if your machine is set up properly and if your technique is on point.
It’s awesome that you understand the black and grey for color vs black and grey that stays black and grey. That’s my issue is to transition. I have a painting approach as a black and grey but getting more dark realism I also use the hawk and have a dragon sleeve of full purple and red oranges etc but wanna get smooth right off the bat instead of detailing way to early
Good insight on the color work, and I've always stressed to vary tones as opposed to just lightening or darkening a tone. I can also relate to what you're saying about "feeling" the ink saturating. It's one of the things I've noticed about the rotary pens, that you have to feel much more and kinda brush/stroke things in... lines in particular. It's a new monster to tackle, but more of an artist's tool than a machine. I'll be watching.
I use my ring finger to feel that sweet vibration as well I run my machine slow too an work medium slow as well but your saturation on every pass is awesome
This video was exteremlt helpful. I do not want to get ahead of myself at all. I am just starting tattooing and these concepts all sound good and make great sense to me. When would you say they should be applied. I want to work on my linework first and foremost.. then color and then shading and colorpacking. But do you think it would benefit me to take a "gineau pig" so to speak and try out these techniques on he or she
What are the signs to look for that let you know you’re overworking the skin? Is there something you see it do and think that’s time to leave that area now?
hey great vid! maybe someone has asked this before but do you generally have your machines run rather slow to pack the color in nicely and, for some more sensitive parts like inner arm, turn down the voltage even more and keep adjusting as you tattoo?
Awesome videos im an experienced artist in the uk. just curious as to what voltage you run your cheyenne equipment? for colour packing , smooth grey shade and colour blending.i have a thunder but struggled to adjust so went back to inkjecta.i understand everyone works at different speeds etc i was staying at around 100 on the PU11 power supply not sure if your useing a cheyenne power supply or not. your colour blending is bang on. thank you for your time
One of the best tattooing videos. So much easier to understand. Thank you guys for speaking clearly. 0:) Is there any way you guys can make a video on shading tips and techniques with the Cheyenne Pen/ cartridges? I recently switched from the old school machines due to my arm going numb. But I’m curious to see how other artists are shading with these pens / cartridges. I love the machine but am always looking to improve, which is why I follow you guys!
Your video was great to watch, you explain things so well. And it's also great to watch a true artist at work. Keep up the good work and the great videos too. From the UK.
What stroke do you recommend for color packing? I use the inkjecta Titan with standard 3.25mm but i find it hard to pack colors without overworking the skin for me
I really like your videos. What do you think about doing blending on healed tattoo? Will it work. For example, I had red color and I want to make it brighter like orange, should I blend it with yellow to make it orange or just block it with orange? Thank you.b
can anyone tell me what do we have to do when we change color ? do we need to change the needle or jz wash the previous needle abit and dip it in a new color?
i just recently found fireside and tattooimprovement, and i love it. you guys rock. I have a much better understanding of color, and i totally get the vibration sensation when you pack color in the bend of the arm. I generally grab too much ink, and make a mess on the skin, so with saying that, how do you keep your skin so clear of wandering ink? what type of wipe and or papertowel do you use?. i use green soap wipes and i feel they dry out too soon. Papertowels usually scratch the surface. Do you have any thought or advice for this? please keep the tutorials advice and tips and tricks coming. :))
Thanks for the support. I just use paper towels with straight water and wipe fairly regularly. I haven't had any issues with paper towels causing problems on the surface of the skin
I was told never overwork colors cause they start brightening within a couple hours. Also was told that with light colors they can be deceiving cause they blood seeping out makes you think the color needs more when if you leave it alone the blood will quagulate then the ink will brighten and show more. What are your thoughts to this idea
Hi, guys! When you work with a darker color over the lighter, how do you prevent color contamination when you really do not want that to happen? Sometimes you need to keep the bright color bright and vibrant, but darker color kills the effect. Especially when it is not a darker tone of the same color, but a different color.
I find your videos so helpful and inspiring. I have a question I help you will answer for me. Do go from one solid color, fan, then fan in with another solid color? I'm asking because I was told to follow a sort of 70% watered down, and then 30% watered down overlay approach to blend colors. Do you not water down your colors at all?
Hi love your videos , you're a fantastic artist and extremely patient teacher . I love the saturation you get - can you please tell me why I'm having trouble ( specifically with greens ) getting good solid saturation . I did predominately black tattoos for a long time and over the last couple of years have branched out into full colour . Is it just me or do others have trouble with green and saturation . PS I feel like a dork for asking . Thanks for your videos they're sensational .
Thanks a lot for the support. Greens are tricky. Kind of like light blues. They tend to look spotty in the skin when they first go in. I get the best results by moving consistently and carefully then letting the area sit for a while while I work in other areas. I will look back through those colors towards the end of the tattoo to ensure they have settled in and are consistent. It's better in my opinion to let them heal and look at them again a month or 2 down the road
Hello.. this is sorta parallel to this video hut can you make a video on how to be more efficient at tattooing... time management.. & how to really do the piece without being there forever doing it. It seems like some people are just so efficient in their efforts. thanks...
ok... thanks... I just watch some videos & it seems like the artist is so efficient in their time management. They get in there & do what they have to do technique & time management wise to get the job done with out spending the entire day doing it. If we are charging a set amount per hour on hourly rates then you want to do the right job for the customer but also not kick yourself in the balls doing it... lol... thanks... love the videos.. I have been tattooing for quite some time & I still pick new stuff or relearn old things I have forgotten over time with your videos....
can a medium sprung shortback liner be set up as a shader/colour packer and if so would dropping the throw and increasing the voltage be enough? currently runs at 56% duty, 113hz speed at 8+v medium throw,,
great video loved it and im started doing my own ink on my self i totally agree with. Don't over work its better to have more sessions than try to just pound all of it in one sitting .. especially on big pieces .Thanks for the adivice
Hi sir ! What voltage are you color blending i seem to have a hard time figuring out i mostly use 9 to 15 mags and i have a eikon power supply the ems420 thx in advance :) love your video
very cool to see you fill in all thoseareas with such a big configuration =) am still experimenting with colour on paper and it is quite chaotic depending on what you are using to draw or paint. colour pencils or markers really tendo to do the opposite but still i try to use your tips here and there =) tnaks again for a great video=)
This was very informative! I cannot think you enough for this video as is. There's one thing I honestly don't understand on how or what to do. Whites. How do you get the white ink in? like say, for a rose. How would you add that into it?
Thanks for watching. Everyone has different ways of working but I tend to use a round shader for my white highlights and move slowly to get the color in. It sometimes looks spotty at first due to the skin irritation
Thanks a lot. I use a round shader or large liner configuration instead of a mag. You typically don't want to fill large areas of white as they tend to look yellow or murky when healed. I try to use white against strong contrasting colors so that it stands forward better and holds up longer
I am more experienced with oil but tattooing is much more limited than oil in it's application. I know a lot of tattooers who feel like watercolor translates better.
what's the difference between the round needles and the mag needles what different techniques do you need two tattoo with the mag needles I've only used the round ones
It depends on the area I'm working in. With the adjustable "click" grips, I am constantly changing the depth. Longer for spongy areas like the back of the arm and shorter for areas like top of the shoulder. I do it mostly by feel
Hi, what is the purple grip that you have? I am thinking of buying Ego biohawk grips, are they any good? Have you got the experience? thanks for quick reply
Thanks @Nicky Emmeralofficial. I was searching for this tape. I found one seller {from Slovakian IP address the results are little different to e.g. UK}. It sound better then Bio Grip which may not fit into hand after it arrives, and tape seems more suitable. Could you please expand on how you lay the paper towel in-between? I am new to this, thank you very much
I don't typically use bugpins but I do use the long tapered mags, Especially for black and grey shading. I like the curved mags in larger configurations (15m and over) I use regular mags for smaller configurations. THanks
Where do you recommend me to get a good tattoo machine? cause I seen sites and the prices are to low or it says permanent makeup and I got a lil confused cause I dont know if it is the same machine or not. Help plz!!!! btw love your tutorials!!! they really help.
There is no one right machine to buy but I do recommend buying the name brand of any machine rather than the knockoffs. They are normally made with cheap materials and will be more trouble than they are worth
So it's OK to put lighter colors in first, and then putting darker colors over it? (Start with yellow, put orange after, then put red after? Or yellow, then light green, then dark green?)
I wouldn't start with the lightest colors. I do start fairly often with the mid tones and then go darker. As long as you are using ointment and not beating the skin up, you won't typically have an issue with staining. I might affect your photo but typically won't affect the healing
I forget the set stroke to the Cheyenne pen but I am constantly adjusting the depth based on where I am working on the body and what type of configuration I am using. I've noticed that different cartridges are set up very differently from each other which has me changing the depth back and forth. Wish I could be of more help but I don't have a good answer. I just try to pay attention to the skin to be sure I am getting good saturation without overworking the area
IT looks like you are darn good at depth control...When you were packing the light yellow I didnt see a speck of blood or plasma at all..That definately impressed me!! Angelo Grisafi is like that too..He puts the lightest shades of gray in without any redness, swelling or blood..Healing time 1 day LOL
Hi!! I’m an aspiring tattoo artist. I have a question about needles. When you put darker colors on the needle first, and then find yourself needing something lighter, would you use the same needle? Or would you have to switch it?
Best tattoo videos by far. I've watched close to 1000, and you are by far the best. Your narrative is detailed, and the video quality is great. I like how you speak as an artist and how your descriptions reference painting. You are a true artist and your technique is beautiful to watch.

How far is the tip sticking past the end of thee cartridge?. I ask, as it seems the cartridge is pushing against the skin
Great job. I love the explanation! Color is something I'm working on for sure. Black and grey is really my strong suit, but becoming just as comfortable with color is a goal of mine.
Best tattoo instructional video I have seen yet! xx
Thanks a lot!
I am always amazed at how clear, concised and at-level your videos are for me. You're making me better everyday and show true respect of the art by sharing best practices.
Thanks so much!
This was amazing, clear and very easy to understand. One of the best technique videos I have ever seen. Subscribed! Keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks so much for the support
"Noodle in" -a phrase I will be using
I just checked the title and was inundated with more information than i could ever ask for..
truly humbling, thank you!
Thanks a lot! I appreciate the support
I'm an aspiring tattoist and I may be having an apprenticeship this June! this makes so much sense.
I always feel a sense of satisfaction when working from light to dark, lol. Since we are always taught to do the opposite, it's almost like I'm pulling something off. Eternal Plum is a great color for this technique, easy to use with hot AND cold colors. Great use of that Seafoam, a very under-used color.
haha. I agree. Nothing like breaking the rules of tattoo and still making a nice piece
Thats awesome that you pointed out feeling the vibration of the skin when tattooing. Thanks man seriously after a while of watching your vidz I just got my breakthrough for packing black and colors thank you very much!! ;)

thank you, I will try out your tip, the self-made finger feel vibrate :) really enjoy watching you roll out your skills, thanks again
We should patent that name! Thanks
Awesome I learned a lot also enjoyed your comparison of the hawk thunder and hawk pen.
Good insight on the color work, and I've always stressed to vary tones as opposed to just lightening or darkening a tone. I can also relate to what you're saying about "feeling" the ink saturating. thanks for the tips, beautiful work and colour,i like using round shaders, you get a great finish,my favourite, great video 😀
WHICH NUMBER NEEDLES DID U USE FOR SHADING WORK
Love how you explain everything! Helps out a lot
yeah!! I use a coil machine and I definately feel the vibration in my left hand !
But do you think it would benefit me to take a "gineau pig" so to speak and try out these techniques on he or she
what voltage did you used if I may ask . excellent work .
quick question , isnt black dominant colour , so a green over a healed black would that not just be black when it heals anyways ?
What are the signs to look for that let you know you’re overworking the skin? Is there something you see it do and think that’s time to leave that area now?
hey great vid! maybe someone has asked this before but do you generally have your machines run rather slow to pack the color in nicely and, for some more sensitive parts like inner arm, turn down the voltage even more and keep adjusting as you tattoo?
are you using a paper towel to wipe or a special wipe. I'm a new tat artis so I'm trying to find the safest and best method

I like your explanation, is so easy to understand. Kudos to you
thanks for the kind words!
Excellent Jake with lots of info, a dumb arse like me is gonna have to watch this a few times for it all to sink in.
Watch it as often as you need! Thanks for all the support Steven
amazing teacher. Thank you!!! I've never left a youtube comment till now!
wow. Thanks a lot. I'm flattered
I've only done the one tattoo on myself (many others done professionally ) but I am hooked on fireside tats
Awesome. Thank you
Your awesome man just wondering what machine your using ? Looks like. The ones woman do their lips 👄 and eye brows with ? Just wondering thanks
What stroke do you recommend for color packing? I use the inkjecta Titan with standard 3.25mm but i find it hard to pack colors without overworking the skin for me
when you wipe an area, how do you keep from smearing the ink? does adding a gel to the skin help the paper towel soak up the excess ink?
I really like your videos. What do you think about doing blending on healed tattoo? Will it work. For example, I had red color and I want to make it brighter like orange, should I blend it with yellow to make it orange or just block it with orange? Thank you.b
Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing knowledge so freely! Your teaching technique is as elevated as your work.
Thanks so much! We really appreciate the support
WOOOW....Great video...that really explained a whole lot of doubts I had....still learning on my own.

Thank you so much for explaining so good! The best video I have seen until now!
Thanks for watching and supporting us!
Thank you so much for videos. What do you think about textured needles? Are they better for color packing ?
Wow.. awesome work.. having trouble with greens also.. ill try your tip.
Tnx for the vid..can you tell me on what voltage do you work for shading lining and color packing! Tnx
I find your videos so helpful and inspiring. I have a question I help you will answer for me. Do go from one solid color, fan, then fan in with another solid color? Very nice video..
Which needle hangout do you prefere and how many cps's.
Thanks for your fantastic clips :)
hi. love your guys videos. just wondering if you can shed some light on the rough cps your pen is running at. thanks again
i cry thank you for all your videos to share your knowledge , it is a big help for newcomer like me
Great!.Glad it is of some value to you. Thanks for supporting us
Hi love your videos , you're a fantastic artist and extremely patient teacher .

Good idea. I would have to give it some thought in order to distill it down to something but I will put it on the list of show ideas
ok...
You spend the entire day doing one tattoo!?!?
um, every studio has a day rate which is for one tattoo on one client lmao
can a medium sprung shortback liner be set up as a shader/colour packer and if so would dropping the throw and increasing the voltage be enough? currently runs at 56% duty, 113hz speed at 8+v medium throw,,
are you deliberately wiping color instead of dabbing? like you would with black ink, amazing work!
what about power when packing color? 80? 100?
hi i was wondering which name brand of ink you choose for that tatt? they came out pretty nice..
great video loved it and im started doing my own ink on my self i totally agree with.
But how many times or how often do you change needles
man your work is great!! thank you for sharing & for the really good explanaition. keep up the good work
very cool to see you fill in all thoseareas with such a big configuration =) am still experimenting with colour on paper and it is quite chaotic depending on what you are using to draw or paint. colour pencils or markers really tendo to do the opposite but still i try to use your tips here and there =) tnaks again for a great video=)
Thank you
Not one F bomb! Thank you for being an artist I can take seriously, nice to finally see class in our art form.
haha! Thanks. I'm sure I can find a way to drop an F bomb in. Don;t want us to start looking soft!
hahahaha noooo so professional I love it
Ugh shut up, acting like a swear takes away from the learning experience.
any problem filling black in ribs? I sein right by the ribs I get bleeding a bid packing blacj
thank you , i ll be checking out more of your stuff,, great video
This was very informative! I cannot think you enough for this video as is. There's one thing I honestly don't understand on how or what to do. Whites. How do you get the white ink in? like say, for a rose. How would you add that into it?
Thanks for watching. Everyone has different ways of working but I tend to use a round shader for my white highlights and move slowly to get the color in. It sometimes looks spotty at first due to the skin irritation
Great video, thank you. Do you have a tip how to decently pack in white?
Thanks a lot. I use a round shader or large liner configuration instead of a mag. You typically don't want to fill large areas of white as they tend to look yellow or murky when healed. I try to use white against strong contrasting colors so that it stands forward better and holds up longer
Best video on color ever! Thank you so much!
great tutorial!! at what voltage do you run your machine and on what power supply?? looks like it runs pretty slow...
regards!
Thanks! I am using an Eikon (i forget the model but its the newer upright standing unit) I'm running between 6.5-7v
looks good .we're is your studio plse .
Thank you very much Jake. In your opinion what media is better to study color for tattoing -oil, watercolor...?
I am more experienced with oil but tattooing is much more limited than oil in it's application. I know a lot of tattooers who feel like watercolor translates better.
Just curious about what generalized voltage you set for your color packing?
what's the difference between the round needles and the mag needles what different techniques do you need two tattoo with the mag needles I've only used the round ones
That is hard to discuss over the internet unfortunately. It is best to find a good mentor who can illustrate those ideas in person
absolutely gorgeous work!
Thanks a lot!
HD quality on point!!!!
what do u use machine and stroke in this movie ?
Wha w wh wh wha what machine did u use for this Sir?
wow amazing videos!! Any artist that gets to apprentice under you is super lucky and gonna be great!
Amazing packing and blending (Y)
I was wondering if you are applying pressure when packing solid color with the cheyenne hawk machine?
What sort of throw in mm do you use with large mags and the Cheyenne pen ?
When's the next video? I Love your channel so helpful!
I think the pen is a 3.5mm stroke. I tend to set the needle depth a little more shallow with my big mags than with liners. Thanks for watching
What is the amount that you set your needle depth for colours ? with an A bar down... how much do you poke the needles out? just over a nickel?
It depends on the area I'm working in. With the adjustable "click" grips, I am constantly changing the depth. Longer for spongy areas like the back of the arm and shorter for areas like top of the shoulder. I do it mostly by feel
It Looks so easy how you do it..would y give me a Tip for the Settings to work with colours.. :(
Are u doing a clean rinse in between colors or mix in tube?
I mix quite a bit in the tube. I do rinse fairly regularly as well
Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. May I ask what taper are you using ?
What voltage do you run your machine for color
Klear, simple, very Good Explained.
For that i was searching for.
Thank you
Hi, what is the purple grip that you have? I am thinking of buying Ego biohawk grips, are they any good? Have you got the experience? thanks for quick reply
Robert Lengyel it's actually cheyenne grip tape I believe.... good stuff..I use it all the time layered on my grip with some papertowel in between
Thanks @Nicky Emmeralofficial. I was searching for this tape. I found one seller {from Slovakian IP address the results are little different to e.g. UK}. It sound better then Bio Grip which may not fit into hand after it arrives, and tape seems more suitable.
Could you please expand on how you lay the paper towel in-between? I am new to this, thank you very much
It's just coban. Not a grip
I realized soon as I saw it on the computer instead of the phone. It looked like a tiny rough grip, good for my small female hands ...
When your color packing do you use curved bugpin mags, and the same question for black and grey shading.
I don't typically use bugpins but I do use the long tapered mags, Especially for black and grey shading. I like the curved mags in larger configurations (15m and over) I use regular mags for smaller configurations. THanks
Fireside Tats thanks and thanks for shering info and ideas.
Where do you recommend me to get a good tattoo machine? cause I seen sites and the prices are to low or it says permanent makeup and I got a lil confused cause I dont know if it is the same machine or not. Help plz!!!! btw love your tutorials!!! they really help.

You'd be a lot better off buying yourself an apprenticeship before buying a machine.

Hi! What needle stroke and depth do you use for shading, packing, line work? Thanks
Angelo Grisafi is like that too..He puts the lightest shades of gray in without any redness, swelling or blood..Healing time 1 day LOL
what ink do you use, it's pretty vibrant. I've been using Fusion for a while but always like suggestions
Thanks. I use Eternal and Fusion typically
Hi!! I’m an aspiring tattoo artist. I have a question about needles. When you put darker colors on the needle first, and then find yourself needing something lighter, would you use the same needle? Or would you have to switch it?
it's more akin to a paint brush, rinsing in between. if you need a new "brush", you've moved onto a different task in the tattoo.
