They haven't made a decent vehicle in domestic since the early 90s imo, favor early 80s and late 70s my self. I'm a huge domestic fan, but I understand engineering enough to appreciate the Asian imports greatly
Sooo badass. First time i've ever seen these. Now THAT is the ultimate rig. One of the best 4x4s ever, and it's a fiberglass camper as well. An absolute gem.
Very nice. Old school for sure. I love it. I bet this unit was nice back when it was brand new. Way ahead of its time. Definitely worth all the money and work you put into it.
This is the very close to the rv I have, except 2wd. Since I live in it, I switched to all LED lights, 500w solar, 580ah lithium batteries, 2000w inverter, re- roofed, new tires, fixed heater, oven, new fridge, added water filter, upgraded bathroom, custom made insulated wall/ window blackout coverings, 3 fantastic fans with insulated blackout covers and fully shrouded up top, added a backup camera...I love it!
My parents had one. It wasn’t a 4x4, but everything else is the same. We lived in WV and would drive it down to Florida and to many different race tracks. I always enjoyed camping in it. Even went to bush gardens in Williamsburg with it.
This 1986 Toyota Sunrader 4x4 is nicely done. It looks cozy and homey. Everything is functional. I'm glad that there is shower and toilet which is very essential. We could live there the four of us when traveling around Yosemite Park. Thank you for sharing us this video. One of the nicest RV ever!
22re are one of the best 4 cylinder engines ever made in its time until now if they Wheir in production . . I had a 1991 Toyota pick up with this 22re engine , I got 345.000 miles with same timing chain. I had 2 tune ups done 4 break jobs and same transmission sold it to a man who took it to south America. Love these trucks also the old t100 6 cylinder is a bad azz truck to. 👍
My 22re pickup truck only had 275k but my buddy had a Toyota motorhome 22R 5 speed with 250,000 miles, we're talking a 40 year old motorhome with a quarter million miles and he still daily drives it cross country and it runs great. Pulling an entire house
I just find it impressive a 4 cylinder can pull a motorhome so far. Why do modern cars suck so badly..we already figured out how to make a good engine. We're going downhill
Fantastic TSR4x4! I got very similar interior in my '78 minus the crazy carpet. Great decision not to put any weight to the top! These trucks are light weight, my 2WD says only 4600lbs and does 15-20mpg. Nothing can go wrong with mixing fiberglass and yodas!
I've got a 1987 Chinook on a one ton Ford chassis with the 6.9 IDI diesel engine. I'm doing all the same things you did to this rig, although I'm also going to do the interior with all the latest solar and LED lighting, etc. Fun project.
That is one bad ass RV! I own a rare 1994 4x4 Serro Scotty Highlander. It's based off the 2nd gen. 1994 Dodge RAM 3500 5.9l Turbo Diesel. They stop making them in 1996-1997 after the factory burned down. Keep us up to date on what you do with your rig. Definitely a unicorn. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Believe it or not but I also own a 1996 Serro Scotty HilanderGT, 4x4, 5speed NV4500, Cummins 12v. Like the Scotty factory, the Sunrader factory burned in 1987. Both rigs are absolutely great machines.
That mind set is exactly why you see two out of three toyota rvs on Facebook marketplace gutted on the inside. People see a few videos millennials post of them "modernizing" these rare old campers and everyone thinks they can do it. Not realizing how intensive and expensive it actually is. If you buy one of these KEEP IS AS ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE. I've owned a couple, they are well equipped and setup from the factory. Please People stop thinking that you have time to "gut and restore" one of these only to leave it gutted and one step closer to the scrap yard in many situations. Just my two cents.
I like the look of the Sun rider. I had a Toyota 4 cylinder Dolphin. On the straight highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco, I passed one vehicle. A street cleaner with the brush up. It's the perfect RV to overcome road rage. No one slows you down.
I had a 1986 4x4 pickup. I know they made a 1 ton two wheel drive pickup but I have never seen a 1 ton 4x4 version. I imagine Sunrader took a a stock one and upgraded from a stock 1 ton 2wd or stock 4wd and a made it a dually. Id love to have 1 ton tacoma with small diesel.
That's so sick, I had a 93 5speed 4x4 pick up, to this day my goal is to find another and restore it, with a few upgrades, I never new there was a dually, camper model
Those are super cool, perfect mini camper. Thanks for showing. The turbo gauge really had me perplexed, I see no signs of a turbo in the engine bay. The engine could use one for sure, stock was like 105 HP? Oh I bet the turbo gauge is manafold pressure, shows vacuum (like you said) for the naturally aspirated flavor.
My husband had to sell his truck like this because he got me all knocked up. I think he hated me a little for that! 😁 28 years together...he's now driven one in heaven.❤️
Didn't even have to look at the channel name. The Toyota in the thumbnail revealed it's captain. Super swell job on that unit Sam. I lost your number bro, it was on my fundra, fundra was stolen. So glad the you tube Algo finally worked.
That's a very nice looking Toyota RV. I've had a few Nissan trucks pulling weight over the years and broke a few transmissions and rear ends. Things broke from being overloaded and not enough truck. But you work with what you got at the time. I could imagine pulling a side by side on a trailer it would get slower, worse gas mileage and may be overheating on a hill. With most things it'll be easier on a truck pulling if you go slower. My best fuel mileage in my 4 cylinder Nissan with 5,800 pounds wouldn't touch my inline 6 cylinder Cummins diesel truck with some weight around 12,500 pounds. And with the Cummins I pulled 23,300 lbs max GVWR once. I often weigh things at the scale. Don't get me wrong Nissan's and Toyota's are very good and dependable trucks but in my rust belt wet area they rust apart bad. The last few Nissan trucks I sold sadly I took a loss on them because they were rusted so bad and nobody wants a fixer upper. When the frame gets so bad they start to wobble down the road even if you can get them inspected. I wish I would have went to a diesel years ago they hold their value better, better fuel mileage and can pull more weight.
My hearts desire. I saw it and had a moment. My mom just turned 97. When she goes over the rainbow, as she puts it, I am going to find me a roadhouse.🧙♂️😎
That is cool, kind of surprised it has an automatic instead of a 5 speed manual,I like the way the generator is set up to run fuel from the trucks gas tank so you don't have to constantly refill it.
What a cool camper. Is anyone else disappointed that he showed us everything about the truck but left out mentioning the 8 lug conversion and the upgraded wheels? The whole time I’m saying “there is no way this guy is leaving that info out of the video”. Then blue balled.
My 87 Toyota has tip gages where those holes in your dash is. It's a three Guage unit, in the unit is an altimeter, front to back angle Guage and a side to side angle guage.
Holy crap, that motor is barely broken in. Treated with high quality lubricants and regular maintenance you can get more than 400,000 miles from a 22RE.

You sir have a gem of a project. You should be honored with the task to refurbish...
Wish Toyota remake these kind of RV with new Tacoma or Tundra version.
Just watched a video of both tundra and Tacoma called off road 4x4. Similar layout. ua-cam.com/video/o9dxToYyVxc/v-deo.html
Yea just under $250,000 . Get your today 🤣 would be nice but you know the price would be nuts

Tacozilla. Check it out. Probably ridiculously priced but looks awesome
Incredible! That rig reeks with adventure! I'm green with envy!
Me too is it not awsome?
I love these things! I've been searching everywhere for an affordable one to fix up
Heck I'd sport one of those today. I'd completely restore and modernize it and take it out every weekend to go camping.

I work for Toyota and I have never seen this type of vehicle. Love it, thanks for sharing!
I just finished building a 76 Chinook Daytripper on a 1995 Toyota T-100 4x4 all reinforced with steel square tubing. Lots of mods ....Lots of work
Very unique vehicle. I like the open cab design very cool. It’s definitely worth a restoration.

Absolute dream vehicle right there. Always loved the Toyota truck rvs
Love this build. I watched the build progress on Instagram and it's great to finally see a video of it! ❤🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Sweet! Amazing how they pack so much into a small camper. enjoy it!
Dare I say perfect? I have spent many MANY nights in my van. This is amazing setup.
The outside looks fantastic, but I'm thinking about how the inside could be after a gut job and rebuild using modern, lightweight materials.
The age to it looks nice if anything refurbish the same style
I'd rather have japanese older material then all modern garbage materials.
