  • I've been having some trouble with the downspout drains overflowing in heavy rain or draining slowly. I decided to replace them but wanted to avoid trenching in drain pipes clear across my property.
After watching a lot of videos mostly from a site on UA-cam called Apple Drains, I'm trying a french drain solution. While Apple Drains is in Florida and I am in NE Ohio making the job quite different for me, I still found their content to be very helpful. Thanks for that.
This video shows one drain and I have installed two so far. I didn't want to trench forever and I do have a slope to the rear of the property that I am taking advantage of for the overflow and it is doing the job.
Since this job was completed we have had some pretty severe rain storms a few times and this has worked out well so far.
I used standard 4" grates for the overflow since I didn't like the emitter type and want to be able to see if the drain has any debris in it. It is also easy to just pull the grate off and reach down in the tee fitting to remove leaves and crud that wash down into it. So far that's been OK.
If your not afraid of manual labor this solution is not that difficult, just work.
    Hope you find it useful.
